    This video looks at different corner cabinet types and what you can do to make your corner cabinet more functional. It's no secret that I am not a big fan of base corner cabinets, however if you find yourself with one, there are some pretty decent options.

      I have bins on the shelves of my corner cupboard with seldom used items right in the corner. When I need anything in there I simply slip one bin right out of the cupboard so I can slide the corner bin sideways to get at it. If I update I will probably change it but it works for now.

    Because all of these options are ridiculously expensive and don't allow you to use all the space, I just use my hidden corner for large bulk items: eg. pet food, gallon bottles (water, vinegar, dishwashing liquid, maple syrup, laundry detergent), large sacs/bags of dry goods, etc. - things I need to access only for restocking.
    You end up storing fewer but larger items so you know and can easily see what's in there.

    I have a blind corner cabinet that had a paneled rear. This house was built in 1972. So when I determined to redo that paneling, I asked my carpenter to make the corner cabinet back have a pocket door. It now is accessible from both sides. I also asked to have a deeper shelf placed in it. I love it! My kitchen has 3 blind cabinets. I really don't like them. I totally agree that it is simply a waste because I cannot get at the stuff in the back.

    Our base corner cabinet with the other side hidden. (The lower cabinet) we took all the shelving off and now it's big enough for a person. The idea is to see better all the way back because the shelving isn't on the way, you can really see better. We use that for every cleaning stuff, so vacuum, mop, carpet cleaner, steamer, and so on. It is amazing, no more things that get lost and really easy to get the vacuum out and in. I know it is really weird place (at least here in Finland, usually it is in hallway) and the big cleaning closet in the hallway, we put all like biking stuff (helmets), skiing things and outside playing stuff and some clothes. Very happy for the lower corner cabinet. But I haven't yet figured the upper corner cabinet out, it is for cleaning stuff also, like different cleaning agent, sponges and so more. Before we used it for big things like flower vases and different stake-sets (fork, knife thingy) because if you put there something big or long it doesn't get lost in there :) so mo point, try to take shelving out (or leave it on the bottom so you don't have to make space for shelving in the storage and you then can see on the back of the cabinet also :) if you don't want to put money in a pull out drawer thingy (see in the video) example (it is really really good if you want to storage example your pans there, get it if you have money. I don't so had to get another solution 😅)

I've read articles before this video that didn't have photos at all to to show what solutions they were naming and they didn't even explain the solution either, it was really vague so I had to look up the names itself like "swinging pull out shelves" because they provided no details/explanation in article. A dumbwaiter actually functions as a mini elevator for breakfast trays, etc., and is often found in mansions, hospitals, restaurants and hotels. The “dumb” means silent. It is also known as a “lazy waiter.”
    The 1737 definition of dumbwaiter (first use), which isn’t at all what we think of as a dumbwaiter nowadays, refers to a portable multi-tiered table or stand for serving.
    Some people describe one of Thomas Jefferson’s dumbwaiters as a “lazy Susan,” but it is actually a revolving door with shelves on one side. Outside the room, the shelves would be filled with dishes of food, then the door would be rotated so that the food appeared in the room.
    It sort of reminds me of a trick bookcase in a mystery story or the fireplace that disguises the entrance to a hidden room in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.”

  • @SarahRenz59

    A dumbwaiter is not the same as a lazy susan. A dumbwaiter is a vertical shaft with a pulley or hydraulic system, used to move small items between floors. They're most often found in large Downton Abbey-like mansions where the servants' area (kitchen, laundry, etc) is on a different floor from the living area.

    • @653j521
      @653j521 2 роки тому +3

      Sarah Renz It can also be a drinks cabinet on wheels that is delivered to the gentlemen in the dining room after the ladies have left, so the men can drink and smoke and talk about matters they want kept from the servants. The cabinet is therefore mum or dumb.

      If you look it up, the ordinal lazy Susan was a dumb waiter. From Wikipedia: “It is likely that the explanation of the term lazy Susan has been lost to history. Folk etymologies claim it as an American invention. According to lore, Thomas Jefferson invented the device, which was known as a "dumbwaiter" for his daughter Susan”.

      It can also be a good solution for a house where the garage is in a lower (basement) level and the kitchen is at ground level. That way you don't have to try to get 4 kids and groceries for a family of 6 up the stairs. Just put the kids in the dumb waiter while you carry the groceries up. I KID, I KID! My friend has this garage-downstairs setup, and she has a full elevator! 💸

    I got the clear trays to fit my lazy susan corner cabinet. Made all the difference. Mine is that half moon type with a minimal edge. Now I store all my rarely use items in the wedged shaped trays and nothing falls out. I can pull them or rearrange as needed. In my next remodel though I'm thinking about somthing I saw in one of your later videos. It is two separate units each behind what looks like a 2 drawer fronts but they open like doors and each has a hinged tray with the half moon shaped unit. They work independent of each other so no bending on hand and knees to get to the bottom tray.

    Ha! We had a galley kitchen in our previous home and It had a Huge blind corner (next to the Double ovens.) Dining room was on the back of that area. My husband tore out the wall in the dining room (roughly the size of a room door), and installed 4 slider shelves w/ a stationary shelf near the top. It was great for small appliances, and seldom used but necessary items. He also constructed a walk-in Pantry out of Cabinet-style pantry. We found that even if my husband used a step-stool and he is 6'-4", He could not reach to the backs of these cabinets, as they were incredibly deep. He read a book (Yes, this was in the early 90's) and constructed the door frame, sheetrocked the outside and the inside, put in deep drawers, lighting, adjustable shelves and 3 "Lazy Susans". Now we had totally usable space. Also, one of the very few walk-in Pantries in the whole custom-home neighborhood.

    Well made and informative video but I'd like to offer a suggestion. The first home I built had a large kitchen with a ton of cabinets. Lower ones on three walls, upper ones all the way around. Above the upper cabinets cabinets that sat further out. Looked beautiful but over twenty years I spent much of my kitchen time crawling around on the floor hunting for items that were way back in the cabinets(hidden and hard to find). Current house Is a beach style home with an open kitchen. I have four upper cabinets, open shelving between each pair and no lower cabinets except for the sink base and it has trash containers inside both doors. Now as a senior I didn't want to have to get down on the floor to hunt items so all my lower cabinets are sliding drawers or very wide shallow drawers so I can put pots in them and find the one I want in seconds by pulling out the slide. Works fantastic under the range top and very convenient. One large deep one under my oven that holds all my bakeware. A vertical slide on each side of the sink base that holds cutting boards upright on one side and all those boxes of foil, freezer bags, wax paper etc on the other side. Three units are all three drawer cabinets. I have an Lshaped blind cabinet where my bar meets the back cabinets and no room for a door there so that blind unit has three drawers that face into my dining room. Open concept so not one wasted inch in the kitchen. And where do I put my appliances. I have a full size walk in pantry behind my kitchen where I keep loads of appliances, dry goods, etc. When I was preparing to build my second home I was walking around the lumber yard and found a frosted glass door with pantry sanded into the glass along with fruit. I bought it on the spot and it looks great in my kitchen (marked down to $69). I think everyone should build one home so when it comes time to build that retirement home they already know what doesn't work for them. If it's going to be a two story make sure your stairs are at least four feet wide so you can add a stairlift (all my main living areas are upstairs) and solid box on the stair lift hauls my groceries upstairs with ease. All your interior doors should be three foot wide if they'll fit.

      Hey! Thanks so much for your input. Very good suggestions. And having access to a corner on the back side of a peninsula is a great use of space.

      @@MTKDofficial I built all the cabinets in my kitchen so I could fit them to the dimensions of the area. Things like instead of that dark hole of cabinet over the fridge mine in an open cupboard with display glassware like colored mason jars. I will say that I'd never want to go back to lower regular cabinets after building all the sliding drawers that hold my cookware so that it's easy to see and find. The biggest issue isn't the cabinets but deciding what color appliances and what size you'll be able to get in the future. I recently had to replace my fridge and I have all black appliances. It took over six months to get a replacement. I was also limited by the opening to a 25cubic ft or less fridge. So as I said think long and hard on size and color before buying and laying out your cabinets.

    What I did with mine was use drawer glides. I put the first one on the bottom of cabinet so it would pull out through the door opening. The second went 90 degrees to the first just barely clearing the first but pushes back into the cabinet to the right of the door opening. The third one went in just like the first at a level giving you usable space on both the first and third shelf. You could do a fourth one going 90 degrees to the third like the second.
    The way it works is the second and fourth shelves are pushed to the right. The first and second are pushed straight in and the door is closed.
    Open the door and pull either the first or fourth drawer out then move the shelf that is exposed by that shelf to the left. When you are done push the one shelf right out of the way of the one that is pulled straight out. Worked great for way less than $400.00

    When I remodeled my 12x14 kitchen, I put in 2 corner base cabinets with lazy susans & they are great! Without them I would have NO place to store small appliances or pots & pans. I just wish I had something similar in the top cabinets because that is where the hidden space is wasted. I couldn't do a galley kitchen because the 3 kitchen accesses broke up the available wall space. So it really depends on the available space you have to work with.

    I totally agree with the corner cabinet ( no cabinet) idea. We are staying in a house that has a cabinet similar to yours, the corner space is blocked off. It’s a small kitchen and at first I thought it was a total waste of space, but I have found it so functional and plan to do same thing in new kitchen. The uppers don’t wrap around corner either, they just run straight across one wall, I like this as well; albeit, the wall with no cabinets is short and has a window. The fourth corner houses a large roasting pan I seldom use in the back, with large pans in the open area, so not hard to access any of it. A previous house had the two-level lazy susan cabinet, which I really prefer-sort of one-and-done.

    I have a blind corner (that I despise), and yes I know exactly what's in it - my old deep fryer. That's it. I can't be bothered using it or that space. I erased it from my memory. We were going to do a full main floor reno with a great kitchen, but backed out after the contract was signed. The mystical 'divorce dust' started to kick up in the idea phase, and that's all it took for me. I'd rather be married than right (and I AM right). My plan was to build a floor to ceiling small appliance cabinet with a slim door that either opened or slid open/closed. Again, it never got done, but to this day I can still see it clear as day in my head. It's based off an idea I saw in another YT video, in fact. And IMO, it would have solved 80% of the problems with my dinky 7.5'x7.5' kitchen and vast small appliance... addiction. Oh, well. Perhaps I can put on in our next home. *crosses fingers*

    My vote is for a drywalled in corner pantry. I bought a vacation house that came with a framed in pantry and it has been just brilliant for storing so many dry goods in easy reach and easy sight, yet out of sight when the door is closed, with floor to ceiling shallow shelves. My current kitchen plans are to framed in a corner pantry. Upside is i'll only need straight run countertops. Might also insulate it from the living space so it keeps the root vegetables longer (cold outside wall location)

    I do! I remember flat lay countertops. I am old and was designing kitchens in the early to mid 90s at a big box store to start. Our current kitchen (55 year old home) is U-shape. The cabinets are made in place so there are no sides, only faceframes. This makes the corners a bit easier to use but horrible in other ways for the rest of the "cabinet" space. I have planned the new kitchen with no corners, of course. 😂

    I am busy currently designing kitchen cabinets and your input was very useful. I am looking at a standard unit width (typically 600 mm based) with no units fixed to the walls and all unit with wheels. I have read that in certain countries a kitchen does not have any cabinets at all. They all went with the previous owner! You bring in your cabinets and position as appropriate to the new kitchen area. You mention a Galley kitchen layout which I think means there are no corners demanding to be filled with useless corner cupboards. Again my thanks. Paul, Johannesburg

You could block the corner and have two 18" cabinet. Or a 45" blind corner with an 18" on the other side. I'm sure they gave you all the options, but those are some considerations.

I'm not doing a corner on the bottom but on the wall from the window to the wall I on have 24" to the corner and cabinets are 26". I do have 24" on the wall with my oven but that means I need to leave the space on the sink wall empty which looks unbalanced to me because of the 24" cabinet on the other side of the sink. What would you do?

    • @MTKDofficial
      @MTKDofficial  3 роки тому +2

      Hey Michele! Thanks so much for the comment and for subscribing! I really appreciate it.
      Now, as for those cabinets.
      Those two cabinets are an 18" and a 21" with a corner filler. I have about 38" of wall space, so I had some room to work with.
      You said the cabinet is 26". Is this the wall corner cabinet? And is it an IKEA cabinet?
      Depending on the cabinet brand you are using, you have a couple options. If they offer a 90 deg. corner wall cabinet (normally only custom suppliers have this), or use a 9" wall and a corner filler into 21" ) or whatever would fit.
      Another option (and this is only to create symmetry and not function) is to use a blind corner wall on the oven side (can't believe I said that lol) and on the sink side put open shelving and butt them into the "blind" panel of the other cabinet. Again, a wall blind corner is horrible for function, but it is an option to make it look more equal.
      Feel free to send me a picture of the space to my email. If I see what it looks like I may be able to be more helpful. marknamytobin@gmail.com

We are getting ready to remodel and I had to fight the designer at Home Depot, Ron Bannister O'Brien, because I said I didn't want a corner cabinet. If fact, I had to explain in detail every time I wanted to rethink or change something. The funny thing is that I had already designed it, using Ikea and cabinet.com's planner, (which by the way Ikea is my choice for cabinets, if only I could get my husband on board) but between sending him the design and our design meeting I had re-thought somethings, which apparently he didn't like. Making them 3: is ideal. You can get away with a smaller filler depending on if it's a hinged door or a pullout. However, the door opening interfered with my comfort at the range (it blocked the adjacent countertop when open, and we live in a climate where the door can be open most of the year). So, instead of having to buy a new door with the opposite side opening, we decided to close off that wall and add a window. We will later add an exterior door to the adjacent bathroom, which will be more convenient to access from the outside pool area then. We already have two additional egress ways on the kitchen floor. I knew our gain was primarily countertop not more functional cabinet space, but I think any extra to pay for blind corner vs nothing is worth it.

    Speaking of corners, what do you think about corner appliance garages? That was listed in a recent video in which a designer listed things he was “over”. My architect put one into our design, but my feeling off-hand is that it would be better to have that open counter space. I could move appliances away whenever I want and have that space to serve food, etc.

      Hey Lenora! I'm not a huge fan of appliance garages. I personally just don't like the look and it makes replacing countertops a real chore. And yes, I prefer the countertop space too. The best thing is to go with your gut on this one.

    flat lay = self edge. That's what we called it. I don't know if that's correct though. I have a BCB in my kitchen and added the rev a shelf magic corner. I show it off to people in my kitchen. You're right expensive but worth it. I got my cabinets from HD designed it myself then basically bought every accessory from the Rev a shelf catalog.

    What are your thoughts on putting the stove in a corner? I've seen it on Pinterest and thought it was a good solution to the "black hole" corner cabinet.

    • @MTKDofficial
      @MTKDofficial  2 роки тому +1

      The issues for me are the void behind the stove and how to mount proper ventilation. If the wall behind is made to be 45deg, it would be best. But a 90deg corner is not best suited for a stove. I'm sure lots of people do and make it work, I just wouldn't recommend it.

    Two things, and a bonus. First, the famous Frankfurt Kitchen solves the problem. The counter perpendicular to the sink is a board like a table, so the corner cabinet drawers can be reached from a seated position on a kitchen stool.
    Second, I know this sounds strange, but Star Trek (TNG) has an answer. Build a roll-out chair that matches the cabinets: the chair has a cabinet front. Then you just need a pull to pull a stool out of the corner. That way, you have a place to put both a kitchen chair and a kitchen stool. (This comes from the bridge on the show.)
    As a bonus for your hated kitchen planning station, look at the "Step Saving Kitchen" the U. S. Department of Agriculture promulgated in 1949. It has a planning station that doubles as a tea cart. Wacky sounding, but probably intensely practical.
    I'd be curious as to what you would come up with for a step saving kitchen today!

    After almost 30 years of putting up with this I bought a styoro chest. I am going to move evacuation/travel supplies from another cabinet into it. (canopener, sm cutting broard,disposable table suff,etc.) On top is a plastic bedtray. In front are 2 sets of heavy duty expandable pantry shelves side by side. On these are sacked a griddle, a flat casserole crockpot and a giant oval sinksize colander. Underneath is a plastic shoe box of floral arraiging supplies. The shelves extend most of the way to the wall leaving enough space for a container of Costco garbage bags and a few bottles of dish soap. A basket of scrubbers steel wool,etc. sits on the front shelf. This arraingement leaves clear access to the 3 shutoff valves under the sink.

    Dumb waiter means something completely different in the US. A dumb waiter was like a mini elevator operated by a pulley system that moved food from basement kitchens to first floor dining room or even second floor bedrooms. Usually only seen in Victorian mansions. Though I’d love tho have one to bring clean laundry from my basement laundry room to my second floor bedrooms!

    Hi Mark, thank you for all the time and effort you put into analyzing kitchen design pitfalls.
    Re: corners. What do you think of the asymmetrical lazy susan, either the 36/33 (alt: 33/36) or the custom dimensions? I used the term "lazy susan", though I know it is misleading. On the other hand, this cabinet can incorporate a lazy susan. I was thinking they would allow for more visibility, at the very least. In my case, I have a very tight corner; to the right of the sink is a 42" R blind corner with 3" filler abutting the stove and then nothing. The oven wall is 61 1/2", though I could eke out another 5-6 inches without impeding the walk way. The house was built during the stagflation years when every square inch was begrudged, just 5 1/2 feet of counter, 5 1/2 feet of uppers , a sinkbase and a blind corner.
    My second question is, when designing what is the source of the cabinet selection and cabinet dimensions, standard stock readily available sizes or semi custom? Thanks

      @edithh6779 Рік тому

      It took several tries to post this comment, not sure what the hiccup was but wondered if it was that the original post contained a link to a video on asymmetrical lazy susans on the Cabinet Joint website.

    • @MTKDofficial
      @MTKDofficial  Рік тому

      Hi Edith. Thanks for the questions.
      For the corner base, it's no surprise I'm not a fan of the 33/36 option. Mainly because you can't maximize the lazy susan size, so there is wasted space.
      In your case, you could have a custom corner built(42x33 with a left hinging door and then a corner door or use the 5-6", add a 9" tray divider, block the corner and add a 15" drawer bank.
      For the second question, it's probably best to know the cabinet brand you want to work with. This will save you time in the planning and design stage. If you know what you're working with, it's much easier to plan around those dimensions.

    • @edithh6779

      Thanks for the input. the kitchen is 19 x 11 feet, but, up til 5 years ago, it incorporated an eat-in area. We have since added on, freeing up the area where the table was, leaving two walls: 63 and 98 inches. Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but it's just so galling to have no option but to walk across the kitchen to get frequently used pots and pans. Regards8

    Redoing a kitch with a corner sink (wife insists to match the windows in the corner). How do i do a corner sink. A reg 45 Base corner is only 36" on each side. this does not allow for a typical 30" sink because it is too narrow in the front. and the opening is too small for plumber access. Option 2 is a 24" regular base on a 45 degree. I can cut out the tops of the sides to fit the sink. BUT then each side of the sink extends 3" beyond the cabinet. There is no access underneath to this area beacuse its walled off both sides. WIll the counter top installers be able to install the sink if they cant access the sides from underneath?
