"I petted two birds with one hand" I adore you 😍
My all time favourite is Amélie. Love the story, the clothes and the french atmosphere in it. And the music is marvelous. ✨
My favorite Ghibli film is "Only Yesterday" it's so underrated compared to other ones.
About a girl in her late 20s reminiscing about her childhood in the countryside. So warm and nostalgic.
it's my favourite too
Yes can we play some good movie's on for us to see me and the winmen to see place ok
Yes I love to see the movie about the girls in hear 20 I love to see the movie of the girls in hear 20 ok go for it ok the girls in hear 20 ok go for it ok
Stand by me. An amazing movie with great storytelling and magnificent Young actors ❤️
I have this theory that a persons favorite before movie often correlates with what stage of life they're personally in. Like for me, being in my early twenties, the first one just hits a little closer to home than the others because i just feel that I relate to the characters that little bit more. But I absolutely see myself rewatching the trilogy in my thirties or forties, with more life experience under my belt and more distance from what I had going on in my twenties, as well, and shifting my favorite to the installment I feel more closely aligned with then.
Napoleon Dynamite, Requiem for a dream, Lilja 4-ever, Natural born killers, Pulp fiction, Pretty woman, En kärlekshistoria, One flew over the cockoos nest, Lost in translation, Spirited away, Rushmore, Melancholia, For a few dollars more, The Exorcist, In the mood for love, Lost Highway, Tic Tac, Ghost World, Candy man, Home alone (fuck yeah!), Gilbert Grape…
So delightful, Jenny. Hoping this becomes a series. Cultural education❤️
I love the idea that a double-viewing of Battle Royale is considered as a romantic night. Just beautiful!
Here are some of my top movies:
Your Name / The Girl who leapt through time / Dune / Arrival / Billy Elliot / August Rush / Anna and the King
Memoirs of a Geisha / Ip Man / StarDust / The Imitation Game / The Holiday / Interstellar / Hereditary
......
These are movies, which I can watch over and over again.
I love The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. so beautiful. great pick.
Never expected to see Brick mentioned. One of my all time favs
I’m loving all of your film and book recommendations. I watched The Handmaiden following a previous video and it’s so beautiful. Every frame looks like an oil painting.
yo, girl, have you seen pulp fiction? you probably haven't heard of it.
😂
She has taiwanese films as faves so we know she probably watched them she was 14
🤣
So shocked to see The Handmaiden here, it's my fave movie of all time and whenever I talk about it nobody seems to know about it. Now I wanna watch all the other movies on your list haha cause we clearly have smilar taste.
My fave Ghibli is Princess Mononoke.
Nr two of the Before trilogy used to be my favorite. Being in my fifties in a 30-year-old marriage, Before Midnight is my favorite now, and I consider it to be one of the best films about married couples, although there are not many.
lol i forgot what the “Before trilogy” was when reading this comment, so for a moment i thought you were referring to a film series called “After”-a series based off a One Direction fanfic. i was so taken aback cause that’d certainly be an unconventional choice as your favourite, but i figured whatever floats your boat!!
hahaha it made much more sense when jenny mentioned the film & i realised it was actually that which you were talking about
Chungking Express / the Handmaiden / Midnight in Paris / Once Upon a Time in Hollywood / Blue Velvet /also honorable mention for When In Rome because the cast is phenomenal and I feel like they were all fully aware they were making an absurdly cheesy rom-com but they pull together and make it work.
The English Patient, is one that comes to mind. I just love it, and the tragedy of it is beautiful!!!
Thank you for sharing your wonderfully curated and eclectic list, Jenny! I love movies, Fried Green Tomatoes is one of my favorites, too. Another you have got to watch is “Picnic at Hanging Rock.” Made in the mid 70,s it’s probably Australia’s most famous and iconic film of all time. Gorgeous cinematography, very atmospheric and dreamlike, it stays with you long after it ends.
Picnic at Hanging Rock is so delicious!!
My favorite Studio Ghibli movies are Howl’s Moving Castle, When Marnie was there, and The Wind Rises. Can’t wait for The Boy and the Heron! A couple other best movies are Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, A Room with a View, Gladiator, Inglorious Basterds, Toy Story 1-4, Princess and the Frog, and all the Aliens franchise.
Howl's Moving Castle. Every, damn, time. It's just so cosy 🌲
Have you heard of Only Lovers Left Alive? It’s my absolute favorite film.
It’s a tad slow-paced, but the story, actors, intellect, and aesthetics are totally worth it!
Thank you Jenny for giving us the goods 💕
some of my favorites: under the silver lake, worst person in the world, swingers, paddington, ingrid goes west, lost highway
Your book recommendations were on point and i love your movie choices as well! I cant wait to see station agent!
"All That Jazz" Bob Fosse. Perfection
My list would definately include these: Oldboy (Park Chan-wook), Incendies, Whiplash, Jagten, Nomadland, Miss Violance, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Manchester by the sea, La grande belleza, Nocturnal animals, any film of Yorgos Lanthimos. I like films that “shake” the viewer’s world :)
Yes Nomadland! Beautiful.
Thanks for sharing! I loved the ones that I have seen in your list so will definitely give a go to the ones I have not yet seen ☺️
"One flew over the cuckoo's nest" will always be my number 1 movie. I also love anything by Wes Anderson.
Snow falling on cedars; Amadeus; Good Will hunting; Singing in the rain; One flew over the coockoo’s nest; He’s not that into you; Sonata; Some like it hot; Heat; Misery
Spirited Away is definitely one of my top list! 🌱🌱🌱
Can’t get enough of it.
Blue Gate Crossing was definitely a fave in my college years. I loved Tennen Kokekko and Halfway as well, the kind of quintessential japanese jun'ai movies in a refreshing way. (loved because i haven't rewatched any of them in a very long time. my favorites change with time/life experience for sure.) Your comments about Brick capture exactly how I felt about the movie. At the time, i didn't know why they were speaking the way they were, but was thoroughly entertained anyway.
Hej, Jenny! Can you please recommend some good documentaries? And also, for book lovers, biographies?
oooh Im not Jenny buuut: my favs are Spencer (epic biographical film on Diana, authentically portraying eatign disorder in a respectful way thoigh) and Paris is Burning (documetary on 80s new york drag ball scene)
"Rythm is it! - You Can Change Your Live in a Dance Class" is a documentary on a different dance project. I stumpled upon it by accident at a very young age, when I couodnt quiet wrap my mind around what was going on, but I found it super mysterious. Leaves me breathless still when thinking about it
Of course you could also name "Climax" which is fun (and also then not fun at all but creepy ahaha) but I find it a bit hollow and fake... The choreographer of course are epiiiccc
Gladiator ( heroical speech)
J.Edgar ( great character play from Leonardo di Caprio)
Blade ( 90's vibe)
Reptile ( Benicio del toro at his best)
Dune ( beautiful)
And all movies with Christian Bale ( in real life bäh, but a great actor)
Spirited Away - brilliant. Also, Howls Moving Castle in the anime genre. One of my favourite films, based on a novel, is Dangerous Liaisons. The one with Malkovich, Close and Pfeiffer. If you haven't seen it you may enjoy it. All three play their parts briliantly and bring more emotional power than the novel. Although I should mention that I watched the film before reading the novel, so maybe I am biased.
My favourite film of all time is The Sound of Music. I don't like current movies, and I hate violence and heavily sexual scenes. I also hate horror. I love classic Hollywood films from the 1940s,1950s and 1960s, featuring actors such as Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. I love the film Casablanca, which I consider one of the finest films of all time. Classic romantic comedies like Roman Holiday and Indiscreet are also loved. As far as a bit more current movies are concerned, I love My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and its sequel. Out of Africa is one of the most beautifully filmed movies I have seen. A very moving, slightly more obscure film I love is A Foreign Field. It is about several amazing people who go to the beaches of Normandy to observe the 50th anniversary of the invasion, and meet and become quite close. The characterisation is brilliant. I do love Studio Ghibli. My favourite two are My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away.
Oh yes, every single Audrey Hepburn movie!
I'd love to see David's version of this!
I love Totoro best of the Ghibli films, but the Grave of Fireflies impacted me the most so I only saw it once because I bawled after watching it. I grew up with Fried Green Tomatoes and have always loved it. It is one of the few films my mom loves (she's not much for movies at all). I always loved the beginning with how things got set up for the rest of the film basically. Secret's in the sauce!
I have seen the Handmaiden but didn't get into it as much as you. I watch a lot of Korean movies and drama though. I watched the first two Home Alone films in theatres hehe. Love the 2nd more than the first I think. I did see Brick and it was very good! Been a long time since seeing it (after it came out). I'm not a fan of Dirty Dancing (but I love most 80s romantic films). I have not heard of the other films you saw, but they sound interesting. A lot of movies are set in New Jersey (where I live). I see movie sets and show sets all the time in my state haha. Newfoundland is a lovely place. I am not a fan of horror movies. My favorite movie (probably because of nostalgia) is The Neverending Story.
If I had to choose, Howl's moving castle it would be. Also I won't be able to watch it again but Grave of fireflies is an absolute classic from Ghibli.
My favourite movie of all time has to be “everything, everywhere, all at once”. Fantastic. Funny, sweet, emotional, everything.
LOVE all of these! A few I hadn't heard of and am so excited to watch now!
Hi Jenny, I am looking for uplifting books for my daughter to read. She is severely ill, bedridden, around your age, and needs something to make her feel good about this world. Unfortunately she can't watch movies. Do you have any recommendations? Thank you for this amazing video. I found some books based on your movies list.
This video made me miss listening to you guys talk about movies on the Mustards Podcast 😭😭😭
I adore the Before trilogy and totally agree that the second film is the strongest!
Wow, I knew you guys are serious moviewatchers, but this is really impressive. I could only reply with music albums though.
So how about a "best songs from movies" next?
Thanks Jenny Mustard!
Strange compilation Jenny. Includes one of my favorites: Frances Ha. And also movies I can't think of watching again: Dirty Dancing :) I will see Handmaiden, The Station Agent and Blue Gate Crossing. My favorites include Royal Tenenbaums and many others by Wes Anderson, Shortcuts by Robert Altman, Perfect Days by Wim Wenders.
Fick några bra tips här! Tack 👍
Har många favoriter, men här är två som jag kom att tänka på. Gosskören (Les Choristes) från 2004 och Kärlekens slöja (the painted veil) från 2006?
Thank you so much for these recommendations. My daughter has been trying (unsuccessfully) to get me into Japanese anime and I e been putting it off but now I feel even more compelled to try it. Apologies for the unrelated question: where did you get the white sofa tables, I am obsessed with them 😊
I love these recommendations! Dirty dancing and Before the sunset are two of my favourite films too! As a Woody Allen fan, many of his films are among my favourites, such as Manhattan, Hanna and her sisters, September, The Other Woman or Match Point, Allen is also and admirer of Ingmar Bergman who he recognizes as a great influence in his filmaking, I would mention Smultronstället, for me one of the best films of all time, very intimate and existentialist, i recommend for those that like reflecting on human relations, the passing of time and feeling of nostalgia. There are many more of course...it is impossible to choose, I am curious, have you seen Lost in translation? I would not say is one of the best films of all time but definitely one of my favorites too.
So many great Woody Allen films. Annie Hall, Bullets over Broadway, Mighty Aphrodite. Wes Anderson rules I love Dogs, Rushmore and The Royal Tennanbalms.
Top favourite films for me are Bladerunner (Directors cut) & The Piano
Great selection, thx!
Perfect timing! I’m searching for a movies to watch to binge watch today.
Thank you for this list- there's a bunch I want to check out! I also love Studio Ghibli especially 'Kiki's Delivery Service" and "Marnie was there". My favorite all time movie is, "Amelie" which is so aesthetically beautiful and quirky. I also really love Wes Anderson films for the same reason. 💜
@@amelie-db7gu yesssss 👏😎🐈⬛
My daughter and I LOVED Kikis Delivery Service
Adding the station agent and blue gate crossing to my wtachlist, and I've been thining of giving a second chance to Frances Ha since a didn't like it the first time I watched it, but maybe a second time I will?
Oh my gosh please tell me you have read FingerSmith?! The book the handmaiden is based on! It's set it victorin London so you can see the really amazing transformation to 1930s Korea. To be honest everything written by Sarah Waters is so good
Just finished watching Don’t Look Now… Fantastic movie. Will go through the list!
This is peak youtube for me, I know by some of those films that I'll very much enjoy the other ones. It's so hard to come by recomendations that resonate with my taste, thank you very much indeed.
I LOVED Margot at the Wedding. I was so happy to see this one on your list. It's such a gem. Jennifer Jason Leigh's performance was just jaw dropping. As for your anime picks, I love all of those, superb choices, especially Spirited Away. But my fav. anime would have to be My Neighbor Totoro. For me, it's such a dream. And though you weren't mentioning series in this list, I highly recommend Haibane Renmei. It's not everyone's cup of tea, it's a slow story - but if you love atmosphere and story telling, this one is a must watch. It's breathtaking and the only anime that has ever made me cry. Though a second runner up, and I have a feeling you would REALLY adore, is The Girl from the Other Side. Something tells me that you would love this one. As for a favorite movie, that's hard... I'll leave you with three that I love lately, but an all time would be just impossible to pick. The first that comes to mind, and these are all more 'recent' favorites, is C'mon C'mon - it's just... beautiful beautiful. I love this film. Another that I seem to never be able to stop thinking about lately is French Exit. There is just something so captivating about this dialog and story telling. I could watch it again and again and never tire of it. And the third is actually an erotic film, I'm not sure if that's your thing. It's highly sexual and graphicly sexual/sensual, but I think this film is so profound. It's LOVE. It's just such raw story telling, and intimate. Not sure if that's your thing, but I loved it. I'd be tickled if you chose any of these films to watch... OH WAIT!!! I just thought of my all time favorite film as I was typing this out to you. If you haven't seen this film, you MUST see it. The more I think about it, i realize that it is easily my favorite film. It's A Single Man. It is without a doubt, the best film I have ever seen. Hope you read this and find some gems here. Loved this! Would love to see you do more of these types of videos :)
love this video. Just watched Blue eye Samurai, not a movie but a beautiful series.
One of my favorite dance films is Strictly Ballroom
I feel in love with Before Sunrise so that is my favorite, though I also adore Before Sunset. I also share your love for the Station Agent (and Patricia Clarkson). I have a tender spot for messed up romances and would suggest Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Buffalo ‘66 and the Secretary. Lastly, one of my favorite films is After the Wedding … ❤❤❤
OMG, Jenny, just when I was about to exhale "The Handmaiden" you mentioned it! I absolutely love it. One of my favorites of all time. You fall into the cinematography and colors of the movie like Alice in Wonderland.
I share what seems to be your preference in movies for the mood they carry.
"Raise the Red Lantern" is one of the masterpieces for me to create a mood that absolutely envelopes you.
I cannot move on without mentioning another movie with Gong Li "To Live" although quite a number of her movies are my favorites.
I was so pleased to hear about you mentioning yet another great movie "Before sunset". It is indeed my favorite of the three.
Oh, and "Gosford Park" by Robert Altman! Such a feast for the eyes.
I am going to look up the documentary about Swedish director you brought up as well as the Japanese anime you began with. While on the topic of Japanese movies may I recommend "The Legend and Butterfly".
I'm a sucker for a good epic battlefield movie and "With Fire and Sword" satisfies every time I watch it.
And if may, I would like to mention two Ukrainian movies "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" and "The Lost Letter". Definitely moody and even I understood them differently at different times watching.
Thank you so much for making this video, it was wonderful. Inspired me to put some good movies on my list.
Ahhh... love "Fried Green Tomatoes"! Definately one of my all time favourites! I even read the book! Another new movie that really impressed me and hit me right in the heart is "A good person" by Zach Braff with the wonderful Florence Pugh! Recommend, recommed! 😘😍
Thanks for sharing such a great content !!
You mentioned in a video a long time ago a Swedish Christmas film that I wanted to watch, but now I can't find your video or the title of the film. Is there any chance you know what it is?
This list is definitely missing the Bridges of Madison County... The sexual tension in this movie is out of this World!!
If you haven't read the book the Handmaiden is based on, Fingersmith by Sarah Waters, I highly recommend it!
My top ten favorite movies in alphabetical order are:
Braveheart
Bringing Up Baby
Dolores Claiborne
Forrest Gump
Innerspace
Magnolia
Maltese Falcon
Psycho
Purple Rose of Cairo
Singin in the Rain
Anither recommendation (you cpuld cpunt as dance movie) is Paris is Burning!!! About Vogueing, the Drag Ball Scene in New York in the 80s. This film is a vibe and I learned so much watching it! 🖤🖤🖤
I wonder if you and David have seen I Origins? It's about a molecular biologist and his partner who are studying the human eye. It has romance and drama and science and it is to this day one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. It broke me into a million pieces. I cried like a baby and have not been able to bring myself to watch it again. I will at some point because I love it so much and have never been affected by a film in such a way before. I would love to hear your opinions about it!
Howl’s moving castle - the book is awesome, too, and quite different from the movie.
Love your content, I want to watch many of your movie’s suggestions, would be possible to list them? 😊 Thanks
I love "Les choses de la vie" (eng.: "The Things of Life") with Romy Schneider and Michel Piccoli. Top aesthetic film.
Hey Jenny! Loooooved the video. I'd say The remains of the day and Mission are lovely movies, for different reasons. :*
Hej Jenny! Har du sett den Indiska filmen "Filmtjuven". Rekomenderar!
Fried Green Tomatoes is at the top of my *All Time Best* list! I would like to check out several on your list but looking for Frances Ha right now.
Dont look now is a perfect film.
I'd like to know if you have any favourite animation films? One of my favourites is Pixar's "Inside Out" - as an anxious kid who moved around a lot when I was growing up, it stirs up some emotions in me, which I feel is definitely the goal of a good film. Just in general, love love "The Godfather" parts I and II. One film that surprised me was Barbie - I went in wanting to like it because I was a huge Barbie fan growing up in the 90s, but I was not ready to sob at the end! It really resonated with me, especially Gloria's speech towards the end of the film. It has everything: romance, adventure, comedy, depth, emotions.. It became one of my favourite films ever. Have you seen it? What do you think? xx
Dancing movie - The tango lesson by Sally Potter
I LOVE fried green tomatoes!!! Along with Forrest Gump this was one of my favs
Have you ever seen Etre et Avoir? It's a beautiful film. I also love Almost Famous, Amelie, The Sure Thing.
Where do you watch Japanese Ghibli films or Taiwanese movies? In cinemas or is there a streaming service that you recommend?
May I suggest Weekend, a 2011 indie romance film. So subtle and beautiful. Full of great conversation.
Wow, I was just today mentioning Fried Green Tomatoes ( as we were making some;), and I have never watched it! Also remember loving Frances Ha when it was first released..should watch again. Someone here mentions Marnie..uh yeah, one of the first disturbing movies from my chIldhood. I remember mom having a hard time explaining!:). So many great movies I can not begin, but though I do use VPN I didn't remember I could log into other countries for films! Don't judge me but I still love Bridget Jones (1) and Love Actually..how can you not?? Especially at this time of year. I will definitly be seeking out your mentions..well done!
Loved The Station Agent! I'd add the Irish film The Quiet Girl to the list. It's exquisit . Although I saw it months ago I am still under its spell.
So cool you're a ghibli girly too! I'd recommend the Totorro play on at Barbican! You've got to experience it, magical
omg, i have to see that :)
@@JennyMustard definitely worth going to see, there's a few tickets left in Jan or you can check last min cancellations!
Don’t Look Now is one of the best - love Julie Christie
Wauw I am going to watch the whole list! Thank you ❤❤ I Think you would love the documemtay called: Apolonia apolonia. Have you seen it? I absolutely loved the vibe..
Good list! I tend to prefer classic films, so I admit to not having seen most of these. Now I have a good list of entirely new films to look forward to. Keep 'em coming! BTW I love Peter Dinkledge, so I'm so happy to see another one of his.
My favourite Ghibli is Totoro because it's my bf's favourite and if he is in a bad mood I can always make him feel better by putting it on and now I also feel immediately better just thinking about it 😂
And I want to say we had to wait way too long to hear "recommend recommend" ;)
What do you think of 84 Charing Cross Road? As a book lover, I get so lost in the literature and friendship of its characters. It's been my favorite since I was a precocious teen. Lol.
The Big Lebowski is my all time favorite
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri; The Pillow Book; Salmer fra kjøkkenet; Life in Loops (A Megacities RMX); Lars and the Real Girl; Ssa-i-bo-geu-ji-man-gwen-chan-a; Gräns; Gisaengchung; Sorry We Missed You; Le scaphandre et le papillon; Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain
Arrietty is my favourite Ghibli movie 🥰
The one that comes to mind now is The Hunt with Mads Mikkelsen. Love it.
Fried Green Tomatoes is perhaps the most watched in a movie theatre film for me.
Yes more please! My fav movie is Scream 1996
My favorite Movie of all times is "Drei Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel" it gives me a nostalgic childhood-feeling every time I watch it. It has a great atmosphere and also such pretty Set Design and it has a strong female Maincharakter.
This list is a joke. She must have been told to find 10 most obscure films of all time.
Can't even pick the right handmaiden.
Loved the video. Favourite dance film is Strictly Ballroom by baz luhrmann 1992
My favorite, as well!
Skamen, by Ingmar Bergman! It's a classic and depression hits you hard, BUT. If you love cinema, you just HAVE to see it! It is a masterpiece.
The ones that I know I absolutely love, so the ones that I don't know I'm anxious to watch.
