  • The “Chant du départ” (Song of departure) is a French Revolutionary song written in 1794, and the official anthem of the First French Empire from 1804 to 1815.
The music was composed by Étienne Méhul, and the lyrics were composed in 1799 by Marie-Joseph Chénier, it was first adopted when Napoleon Bonaparte staged a coup against the government of France in 1799 and became first consul (later he would become Emperor of the French).
The anthem was relinquished in 1815 after Napoleon abdicated and was exiled on Elba, the anthem was replaced by “Vive Henri IV” with the restoration of the Kingdom of France (Bourbon Monarchy)
