I used my Techmatic on the 20th for the 50th anniversary, I only acquired it about a month ago in a razor lot so this was my 2nd use. I had no problem with the blade and I was surprised how nimble and intuitive the razor is to use. It did a fine job set in default middle aggressiveness setting. No clogging with shaving soap, I'm not a fan of brushless creams anyway.

I recently got a Techmatic since I also heard it was used on Apollo 11 (and it was cheap lol). I find that mine shaves pretty well and I enjoy using it. I also like the look of the razor, looks kind of futuristic in an old-fashioned way if that makes sense. Maybe you'll get a better result with a NOS cartridge. Thanks for the great video as always 🙂

Totally 70's look and doesn't give a great shaves but it was the first razor to land on the moon. Just for that it's awesome to be own from one of this razors and at the same time be linked yourself to the moon landing history. Really cool huh? Have you and your family a nice holidays.

I was born the last day the Apollo 11 crew was in space before returning to Earth and my Mom always told me she watched all the coverage in the hospital waiting to deliver me. So I’ve always had a fascination with NASA, most especially Apollo 11.

I didn't think when I clicked this vid in my subscription feed and at first I was like "wait what am I watching? wait a minute I recognize that voice!"
Holy crap, your voice was awesome along with that 40's/50's style interlude music. I wish like people would hire you to do commercial in that fashion. I've probably said it before but I'm very into 40's and 50's stuff. The majority of my favorite artists are from that time period.

Don't know if it was a matter of the astronauts not liking facial hair so much as (with firefighters and pilots) the fact that oxygen masks had to be worn, and facial hair interferes with the tight seal required for maximum efficiency of the mask.

This razor gave birth to the "Injection " single blade type in the late 60's. Schick came out with it and my Dad used them. He taught me how to shave my face when I was 10 years old, Great memories . Yes, he used Old Spice shaving soap and mug. The razor had a black handle with a brass color head. There was also an adjustable type with a small black dial on it. The regular type is on amazon ,made in China and have bad reviews. The adjustable type I see on e-bay, there used and pricey.

The reason Gillette developed the Techmatic was for the astronauts so they could shave without having any loose blades to worry about the disposal of the dull ones. Also, people say they don't like the shave from this razor because in most part they are purchasing these off of Ebay, Amazon, etc., and not realizing that most of the bands are at the end of the cycle. When the indicator says 1, it's on the last good band. They always start at 10 or 5 depending which band you purchase.

    • @SinatraLennon

Yeah, mine was unused on 5 and I have those three 10 blade refills. I need to use one of those to see if it shaves better. I like this razor and I’ll bet that I can get a better shave out of it.

Bryan, that is a lot of money for that Techmatic back then ! The only reason I still keep and occasionally use a Gillette Fusion razor is for travel. One time when my wife and I went on vacation they lost our bags, and it was nice to at least have some type of razor for the first couple days of our vacation. But it's kind of ridiculous how high the price is for a 5-pack of Fusion blades!! ...I just picked up 100 Gillette Silver Blue Stainless double-edge blades on eBay for something like $13! Take care!

    • @jasperjones6857

    • @PrisonerInGlass

Adjusted for inflation, it's really not that bad compared to a standard modern 5 blade cartridge razor with refills. To a modern old school shaver, that's astronomical, but for the average consumer, not much has changed.

That’s why I like DE safety razors. Even if you would throw the blade in the nature (which I throw in metal recycling) it will rust and brake down. Not so with plastic.

This is a cool video.....just to commemorate MY birthday.......... MY advice: one- the cream was too thick.....almost need to put half what you put but then rub it in with water in your hands......otherwise it's sticky and useless. 2- this is like an Atra or Mach....put tome pressure when you shave....it ain't a DE....... Where did this razor come from: another old hoarder , later died and the grandkids just sold his old gear on ebay.. Same $hit gonna happen with our stuff......

Blades could be dulled on purpose to avoid bloodshed in space

Have you seen the documentary 'Apollo 11' which found a ton a fresh 70mm footage of the launch. The whole thing is only told with audio from the era, it really is the closest anyone who didn't experience could get to watching it. No historians, no talking heads, just pristine footage that looks like it was shot yesterday. ua-cam.com/video/eb_qTKXmc34/v-deo.html

S.H.A.V.E. This is called the Phonetic Alphabet, the military uses this all the time. The police force uses a slight different version.
To clean out the head use hot running water instead of using a bowl.

You went trough the blade bands faster than the rocket that took them to space. 🤣
It is not a super agressive razor, mild, as many other Gillette Techs. But you should not have given up on it to soon. Use it more, get the angle right. I have used blades from 1964 still sharp, blade/band from 1970 should still be sharp, they are stainless, or coated.
I gave you a 👎 for giving up on it. But i liked the video anyway. 😉
I still use mine now and then because it is a special razor from a time long gone.

I’m going to give it another try and press harder this time.

❤️👍 not too hard. It could be that the blade is old or coating is gone, not stored right. Up to you. I loved that you used a brushless cream that had almost simular look to it as the old, old spice they used in space. Fantastic 👌

The original "birth" of the cartridge razor, not so good.🙄 You're going to have that "Jimmy Neutron" hair style again shortly😉 Too bad the shave wasn't better, being a tribute to Apollo 11. Better luck next time. Enjoy!

Yep, this razor was a failed mission. Glad Apollo 11 wasn’t.

@@SinatraLennon I think it was user error, too much talking and not enough pilot training on the razor.👩🏻‍🚀
