Once that solar cycle ended and you had to have bigger gear to get out and started to cost slot of money people got out of it. The internet didn't help either.
Am getting back into CB again in England and this video of yours helped, thank you, as I was 14 back in the 80s when I first started with a UK home rig, so not driving a car. Laws have changed here, so no licence now and AM, SSD is more a choice than FM I'm told. A lot quieter on the channels than in the 80s through when the craze took off more with FM

Thank you for a great video. I made a lot of mistakes in the past with previous radios. Now I can hook this one up properly. The radio I bought several years ago, but it's still in the box, is a Midland 1001z. I also bought a Workman, SWR/RF/Field strength test meter. I have a couple Fire Stick antennas, but I like the antenna you show in your video. Thanks again.
Don’t run the coax through the door, it will pinch the coax. They make these stick on open clips run it over to the driver side, then down next to the window clip every foot. From the base of the antenna . The down btw the cab and bed hiding best you can then under the cab back seat at the floor is a place to bring it in to the cab and then you no what to do!!! Good job !!!
Nice install ; a good mag antenna atop the cab is the best location for best performance. Can't get better unless a 102 whip is on the roof, but that's not convenient to use.
Well with all said. You shouldn't do! You NEVER PITCH WIRE IN THE DOOR JAMB. There is gromets in several places that you can either hardinstall with a hole in the roof and sealed. Or you can run down a drain to either the firewall or to the underside of the cab rear and go in cab then follow the liners till you are completely hidden.
Nice vid! Who does your work? Most people really need to see how to set swr as far as working the switches. The fwd /rev I have same swr gauges in the trucks and car. Very accurate for the money! Thanks for taking the time and effort on the walk through have a blessed day.

He said run a wire all the way from the battery every time I do that my radio just has a popping noise with all the electrical interference from the spark plugs and everything else but if I run it from the auxiliary fuse in the fuse box it's not as bad I've also been told I can get heavier insulated plug wires and that would help
Good install but antenna doesn't always have to be center of the roof. Most usually mount the antenna at the rear of the cab as its the center of the vehicle. But if this works for you then that's all that matters.....73's.
If the vehicle was totally grounded together then yes the back of the cab would be where you want it but 90% of the people aren't going to have everything grounded together
Antenna in middle means you will hear and transmit all around you like a circle. The further back you place your antenna, the more directional it becomes in front of you. Likewise if you move the antenna up close to the front , you will hear/transmit better behind you. Because i use my radio for travel, its best to set it back so i can hear/transmit in front of me down the road ahead.

Also if the Astatic is creating a interference then it must also be Grounded. Might even need a Groundloop to prevent. Both the radio and Astatic have separate grounds. A chassis ground on the radio for a secondary ground helps keep the waves free and clear
An SWR meter measures SWR, standing wave ratio. It doesn't tune the antenna, but is used in tuning the antenna. Once tuned, the meter does not need to be in-line with the radio.

I always powered mine up with the cigarette lighter, through a ferrite choke or two on the power cord and no issues at all. Certain LED headlights causes interference, in that situation. I just throw ferrite choke on those too and problem solved.
Good video, a couple of pro tips, get drunk b4 you even start, trim your stinger ar 27.205 and get it 1:1 there first using a MFJ 259B, drink some more, install the radio last. Hook up obscene power later........ DO YOU KNOW THE DARK SIDE????? HAHAHAHAHA
My dad has a nice Galaxy that he use to have in his first semi. Has a display to show you the frequency the radio is on. Think he said it was kinda sorta illegal because it had some internal work done to it to boost the power and change how the channel 9 switch functions.
No if it's the factory antenna that came with the unit then it's already set up. If you ran a bnc to so-239 adapter and ran a bigger antenna then yes you would need to tune that antenna. Those are weak radios 3-5 watts max
not bad. i have 2 wilson 1000's one on each car. hooked to cobra 148gtl's i run 6 wire from the battery both pos, neg wires have 15amp fuses then goes in through the firewall to radio. I also ground strapped both cars, i unsoldered that shitty rg58 coax installed rg8x tuned antenna with analyzer 1.0 flat match at 50 ohms :) i talk 25 miles regularly i dx all over the place strait up barefoot no illegal amp required 73's from (cb) gto286 (ham radio) K7sce
Is power through a cigarette lighter really that bad for your radio setup? Asking because I bought a fused power cable which will connect to a cigarette lighter. I have mine ran to the cigarette lighter and the only thing I have to do is adjust the noise limiter to cut out engine noise ! I am looking for a magnet mount antenna for my Chevy Blazer ! the reason I don't hook up to the battery is because I can't find a opening through the firewall to run the hot wire to the battery !
Great video, however your ground wire should be connected to the engine block and not the battery. Your power is the only one that should be connected to the battery.

I have a cobra 25ltd classic. The power cable that came in the box have one of those basic white plastic 2A inline fuses. Is this enough when hardwiring it to the battery. I noticed your's was a 30A but I'm guessing that's cause of your 10ga cable and your amp.
Yes for that radio that is plenty. I have a built in amplifier in my radio that pulls a lot of power requiring it to have a 30 amp fuse. My radio does 250 watts opposed to the stock radios
At 9:25 you mention not to coil up the coax because, your words," it will cause an RF block out." What exactly is an "RF block out"? I've been in radio since 1967 and have never heard of this. All coiling the coax will do is form a common mode choke (ugly balun) and will do nothing to the signals received or transmitted.

So my guess is that you are a certified ham operator right. I'm not to sure why the video is about CB when you're using a 10 meter radio. Don't think this about running extra power on the 11 meter band no a lot of folks do that despite it being illegal and it doesn't seem the FCC cares that much as long you don't go overboard. My point is people using 10 meter radios to talk to hams and mod it to work on 11 meters who aren't licensed hams. The way I understand is you are way more likely to get in serious trouble doing that because hams will track you down and report you. From what I hear it's a more punishable offence talking on bands you're not licensed to talk on than just simply running a linear on the cb. Maybe I'm wrong on this but thought I would at least warn you if you're not licensed, just be careful. Like I said people run linears all the time on the cb but it seems you can get into some serious crap running export radios. There's actually someone in my area running a linear and bleeding over 4 channels, I'm surprised he hasn't got stripped and fined. You bleed over, you're asking for trouble
Look closely at his radio, it has SWR meter built in. So I don't think you need a separate SWR meter to tune the antenna. Then again I haven't had my radio long..But I tuned mine with the SWR built into the radio.

So have you realised that you are using a VSWR meter? What's a good length of coaxial to use in the mobile? Can common mode current affect your SWR readings? Is it good practice to place a ferrite choke on the feedline when using an end fed monopole antenna? What's your take on patch lead lengths and the possible effects on your setup?

great vid enjoyed it a lot ..In Australia we almost exclusively use UHF CB 477Mhz..Through repeaters I get up to 40 kilometres or even more range ..Off duplex maybe 5-10 kms ...I use a rear bootlid (trunk) mounted antenna with a special bracket and a choice of two antennas depending on if I'm in the hills or flat going ..One is 4.5 Db the other 2Db , We use 80/77 channels and the frequencies /uses list en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UHF_CB ...Channel 5 and 35 are priority emergency channels and the truckies use channel 40 ..So great to have citizen band ...UHF works really well for us here but it'sgreat to learn about other formats If you're interested here's a bit of tech on UHF here in Australia . You shouldn't spread the message that a very low SWR is the be all and end all, there other more important things to focus on. For example, an SWR if 1.5:1 with 4 watts of input power equates to just 0.154 watts of reflected power. An SWR of 1.75:1 is a 0.227w loss, and 2:1 is only 0.4w of loss. Now when you consider what effect this has on signal strength, the person at the other end may not be able to tell the difference by their meter. After all, it takes a quadrupling of power increase just to achieve one S point. What is more important is the other negative effects associated with a 'high' SWR. The fact that the coax is radiating affecting the antenna radiation pattern, RF feedback issues, rf burn and so forth.
Well for the beginner they don't need to know VSWR and all that other shit this is basic setup for the Yahoo that's going to pick up a system at a truck stop...relax. And if you're in a regurgitate information it's not quadruple you have to double your power to gain one s unit..
Well you just contradicted yourself. They do need to learn about SWR, but they don't need to believe it has a great effect on how they get out. And I'm not regurgitating what you call all that shit, I am simply stating facts. And one S point is a 6db gain which means you have to double your power twice over, so 8 then 16. 4x4 is 16w. You've got a real good attitude there mate, keep spreading and perpetuating the myths. Next you'll be talking about patch leads.
@@arconeagain 8/16 is 2 so that's double the power yes 4x4 is 16 but if it was quadruple like you said then it would be like you having 4 watts and need 12 more watts to get one more S unit to make 16 watts...
You just repeated what I already said. Earlier you tried to correct me on how much more power is required for an increase of one S point. You said it is twice the power for one S point, I already said that this would give half an S point. So like I said, you need to quadruple your power to achieve an extra S point. If you're running four watts then this would become sixteen watts. 4x4. You need to brush up on your maths. Should I just talk to the wall instead?
In the video he brought this up, and said it is better to hook straight up to the battery, but you definitely can use a cigarette lighter for power, and it should work pretty much fine
Got a problem maybe if someone could help me out: Cobra 29 ran to the battery, 2 foot firestik behind the cab, 18' coax with no coils, no kinks. I tried adjusting my swr with a dual needle 30W meter, and the best I could tell is that my swr is reading about 1.7 or so on 1 and 40, and about 1.4 on 20. That's not bad, but when I key the mic on channels 16 and above, my antenna light comes on. what could be causing this?
Sam Johnson cobras are good. problem is your antenna system. length of coax is meaningless. You likely have either. ..bad coax, bad connection (corrosion, breaks, ground) or a bad antenna itself. . seen that many times. Brannon Criner it depends on what you are trying to do. But I would go with anything made by, Xforce, 123 built, 442 built, there's some other good builders but these are some of the best.
alicia appel yes I'm only putting out "5 watts" on the 11 meter band out of my radio..... Ok is Charlie gone... No it's doing 200+ watts out that back. Radio itself does about 40 watts pep then the built on magnum sx-175 cabinet puts it at 200+ watts pep. Any truck stop radio will do 4-5 rms out the box except the galaxy 959 does about 8-9 rms
First offense is usually a warning, second is a fine and they "could" take your equipment, but the only time I've heard of anyone being threatened with jail is when the "ham" operator was purposely being an ass, and purposely wouldn't pay a $10.000 fine! Overeating a bit?

But don't forget to replace the cap after each adjustment. It makes all the difference in the swr reading.

You should have had the coax lead out of the antenna in line with the rest.

I never unhooked my watt/Swr meter in my mobile or base station. And I keep connected because I run a lil power in line.

a lot of people power their CB with a cigaret lighter adapter and they don't seem to have any problem with that.
How much current does your CB draw?

My point is people using 10 meter radios to talk to hams and mod it to work on 11 meters who aren't licensed hams. The way I understand is you are way more likely to get in serious trouble doing that because hams will track you down and report you. From what I hear it's a more punishable offence talking on bands you're not licensed to talk on than just simply running a linear on the cb. Maybe I'm wrong on this but thought I would at least warn you if you're not licensed, just be careful. Like I said people run linears all the time on the cb but it seems you can get into some serious crap running export radios. There's actually someone in my area running a linear and bleeding over 4 channels, I'm surprised he hasn't got stripped and fined. You bleed over, you're asking for trouble
HEY QUICK QUESTION..DOES EVERY CB RADIO NEED A SWR METER..?..
Look closely at his radio, it has SWR meter built in. So I don't think you need a separate SWR meter to tune the antenna. Then again I haven't had my radio long..But I tuned mine with the SWR built into the radio.

great vid enjoyed it a lot ..In Australia we almost exclusively use UHF CB 477Mhz..Through repeaters I get up to 40 kilometres or even more range ..Off duplex maybe 5-10 kms ...I use a rear bootlid (trunk) mounted antenna with a special bracket and a choice of two antennas depending on if I'm in the hills or flat going ..One is 4.5 Db the other 2Db ,
We use 80/77 channels and the frequencies /uses list en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UHF_CB ...Channel 5 and 35 are priority emergency channels and the truckies use channel 40 ..So great to have citizen band ...UHF works really well for us here but it'sgreat to learn about other formats If you're interested here's a bit of tech on UHF here in Australia . How about putting an antenna on top of a chase rack?
The antenna you mount is actually only half of the antenna; the other half is your vehicle. If the rack is well grounded, that should work.

You shouldn't spread the message that a very low SWR is the be all and end all, there other more important things to focus on.
For example, an SWR if 1.5:1 with 4 watts of input power equates to just 0.154 watts of reflected power. An SWR of 1.75:1 is a 0.227w loss, and 2:1 is only 0.4w of loss.
Now when you consider what effect this has on signal strength, the person at the other end may not be able to tell the difference by their meter. After all, it takes a quadrupling of power increase just to achieve one S point.
What is more important is the other negative effects associated with a 'high' SWR. The fact that the coax is radiating affecting the antenna radiation pattern, RF feedback issues, rf burn and so forth.
Well for the beginner they don't need to know VSWR and all that other shit this is basic setup for the Yahoo that's going to pick up a system at a truck stop...relax.
And if you're in a regurgitate information it's not quadruple you have to double your power to gain one s unit..
Well you just contradicted yourself. They do need to learn about SWR, but they don't need to believe it has a great effect on how they get out. And I'm not regurgitating what you call all that shit, I am simply stating facts. And one S point is a 6db gain which means you have to double your power twice over, so 8 then 16. 4x4 is 16w.

You said it is twice the power for one S point, I already said that this would give half an S point. So like I said, you need to quadruple your power to achieve an extra S point. Got a problem maybe if someone could help me out: Cobra 29 ran to the battery, 2 foot firestik behind the cab, 18' coax with no coils, no kinks. I tried adjusting my swr with a dual needle 30W meter, and the best I could tell is that my swr is reading about 1.7 or so on 1 and 40, and about 1.4 on 20. That's not bad, but when I key the mic on channels 16 and above, my antenna light comes on. what could be causing this?

How do you ground the antenna ?
This antenna grounds through the coax, other antennas will have a ground wire on them or you ground the antenna bracket to the frame of the vehicle.
He run directly to the battery thru the firewall in the early part.

Brannon Criner it depends on what you are trying to do. But I would go with anything made by, Xforce, 123 built, 442 built, there's some other good builders but these are some of the best.

No it's doing 200+ watts out that back. Radio itself does about 40 watts pep then the built on magnum sx-175 cabinet puts it at 200+ watts pep.
Any truck stop radio will do 4-5 rms out the box except the galaxy 959 does about 8-9 rms
