For everyone, yes there is a ton more slang words used. And I could have made a video detailing all the words and techniques used that I know of, but that would be one long ass video. This is just the basics on how to get started. There are also old school and new school terms. Different fields also use different terms. But this isn't a video covering everything. It's a fast simple basic and to the point video.
Yes, finally someone that has "played" with them as long as me. I used to have 4 pages of slang written down back then, but am sure that it can all be found "online" these days.

Good video- I know this is a couple years old but CB has made the largest comeback in history just these last couple years- I just got mine for traveling and I am confused about the lingo and the culture of CB users. But this video really clears things up. Just a suggestion, but would you be willing to make more videos like this with respect to channels, appropriate calling lingo, interstate frequencies? Just a thought. Nevertheless thank you for the video it does help. In Illinois alone, New CB sales have been A couple thousand loan for a new users. For whatever reason, CB is making a huge come back to the point where cobra CB headquarters right in Chicago can’t keep up With demand and many units are back ordered.
Fat Joey GOOD TO HEAR. With all the crazy going on right now, possibly people are wanting to get back to basics. And sometimes it's just cool meeting, listening, or talking yo new people. Especially when you're not parked in front of a computer screen. I'm glad to hear CB comeback. My dad would have loved that. He was really into CB. I'm looking into it for my vehicle. Drive safe guy 👌
I think all this shit with COVID got people wanting to communicate, and a CB radio is a good way to do so... Lockdowns are pretty much over by now, but the CB thing has become quite popular now again... So yeah...
This is a decent start but there's a lot that wasn't mentioned or stated incorrectly. Not everything is a four wheeler, count the tires, you've got your four wheelers yes, but you've got your six wheelers (big six and little six) ten wheelers, bobtails, hotshots (mainly used up in the oil patch) heavy hook, Rock buckets. City Kitty for the city cop, county mounties for county sheriff's, full grown for state trooper, diesel Bear is carrier enforcement, meat wagon or boo boo bus for an ambulance even this is a starter list to add to yours. But the most important thing is, with the cb it doesn't do anyone a bit of good if the damn thing isn't turned on and used for what it's intended for.
Lingo comes in all forms and most of it makes sense if you know the context. Of course when you start driving more unique roles you'll have more advanced callouts as its usually more cautious and strenuous driving. But the gist of it being using direction and identification first, then elaborating more on the hazard or whatever it may be youre broadcasting. And I think he conveyed that perfectly in his video. Safe and effective use. And unless people get ridiculous with their lingo I think most people will know what someone is trying to say. If Im ever in a pile up or something Ill definatley at least call it out. I just use mine for offroading, I dont drive professionally.
One of my favorite CB terms is for a closed weigh station, "Chicken Loose On Scale Extreme Danger" or simply "Chicken's loose." Learned that from my folks back when they drove together.
I have a base station, and it is entertaining to listen to truckers. Las nite a couple talking about a loading dock at Minute Made in town here. Yes, though I have up to 210 watts RMS dead key, 300W peak. I keep down to 20 watts thru the Solorcon A99 when on ch19. I always leave min 2 channels off 19 when working skip at full power
I don't know WHY they still talk like that on the radio... all cops know what's up. That was the only reason why truckers created the lingo back in the day. You would think they would start coming up with new lingo instead.
County police/sheriff deputies are county mounties. And the code for a wreck is 10-42 eg. “west bound west bound if ya gotcha ears on there’s a 10-42 in the comedian at the 350 back it down and 10-5”
Go to the truckstop or rest area and click the mic key rapidly about 7 times and say looking for a good buddy come come. That's how you'll make friends goodbuddy
Been driving 10 years... Never heard "sandwich lane". I usually just hear it called "the middle". Another common term to add to the list... "Gator" (As in Alligator). You'll hear them say there's a 'gator in whichever lane (hammer/granny). A 'gator are those big chunks of retread tire rubber that come off the drive tires or trailer tires. It's good to call out debris like that. Especially if the other drivers are stuck in a cluster of other vehicles (since 4 wheelers are fuckin stupid and seem to think we like having them magnetically attached to our fuel tanks like pilot fish) and it'll give them a chance to avoid it. Nothing more frustrating than hitting a gator/chunk of retread and having it jump up and bite your air lines.
If u are a rookie and see a old cowboy in long 379 or w9 at the truckstop . Call him a goodbuddy.. theyll buy u a cup of coffee or a pop. Goodbuddy is code word they used back in the day on the cb
evel knievel = motorcycle cop , xmas tree= officer has someone pulled over, local yokum =city cop, gator on the road =blown tire on the road . A skateboard is a flat bed 18 wheeler ,a parking lot is a 18 wheeler hauling vehicle,, but most important if your truck is govern at under 70 dont get on the hammer lane with the big boys!
Hey Robert I’m a civilian with just a small radio in my passenger vehicle. It’s rare when I’d feel the need to do this myself but I’ve always wondered how a trucker identifies another specific truck, like if he needs to let him know he can move over in front of him. Does he identify the color of the truck on the trailer? I’ve always just heard the guys out there say “come on in driver”.
diesel bear = dot, not all things are considered 4 wheelers if your around the oilfield cb lingo you have water bottles - water truck , dump bucket - dump truck , sand can- tanker hauling sand i could go on and on but good video on the basics
heavy rigid trucks/box trucks etc are referred to as rigids or HRs in australia. You would cop a mouth of abuse on the cb or a smack in the mouth if you called a rigid truck a 4 wheeler lmao
No cars with 4 wheels are 4 wheelers. A box truck usually has 6 wheels so it’s a 6 wheeler. Love theses newbies getting out here after two weeks of driving thinking they know it all. Shit I backed up more miles bumping docks than junior here has going forward.
Hey C.P.L. Chronicles, I was wondering if you could give me some information on what you think about an mobile app that replaces the CB Radio and what the positives and negatives are regarding conversations over CB that you would want to see and not see in the app. What is it that truckers really need and desire while on long hauls. Thanks brother and drive safe!
The first thing would be quite obvious, and that would be that mobile devices are illegal to use while driving and especially while driving a big rig, so having a CB app would be pointless! The positives of having a CB , safety, huge bonus n the safety department as drivers give you the heads up on upcoming traffick jams or wrecks or broke down vehicles or debree in the road or icy spots things like that. What truckers desire the most while over the road, that's easy! We desire a parking spot that we don't have to rush and try to beat other drivers to. Parking spots are in complete short supply! It sucks
Thank you for the insight and I apologize for the late reply. That was a very good point you make though; mobile devices are illegal to use while driving! Stay safe on the road and please let me know if you have any other ideas that you would like to pass along!
Mmm the most important thing is never end it with okay good buddy lol truckers hate that including me and garbage talk on the radio I usually say take it to a different channel no one wants hear there sob story and never let a lot lizard use your radio for business period. ✌🐼🤳

Do truckers get upset when asked about traffic from a "4wheeler"? I have a CB in my pickup and listen to the lingo, but really only talk when there's a traffic jam, like asking at what mile marker does it clear up or something
Agreed, I recently drove to Groves, TX from Chicago, IL and back and I monitored 19 all the way there and back, it helps listen to some of the conversations and I only chimed in a few times like when there was a full size suitcase in the middle of the left lane on a 2 lane hwy. After I called it, I noticed that a few drivers passed the message on and then it turned into a chat about what if it was full of money.
Just last night I helped out a warner driver I keyed her up asked what lane was closed she didn't know. I got around her she was about 2 miles back I hollered at her that odot forgot the signs and that both lanes on 62 were bare and clear. She thanked me. If you give good info you will get good info back.
Shaky town- LA Bean town- Boston He forgot the biggest one 10-4 Swindle sheets- log book Skateboard- flat bed Kojak with a Kodak- HP running radar Gumball- officer with a single light up top Choke n puke- truck stop restaurant Chi town- Chicago Flag town- Flagstaff Got your back door- trucker has your lane blocked so you can get over The list goes on and on.
I have heard the term "City Kitty" for local police before and for state police driving white cars I have heard them referred to as "Polar Bears" before.
@@burtonh1 yeah, the other terms were, local yokel for a city cop, a county cop is a county mounty, a state cop is a super trooper... A fully lit up police car is a Tijuana taxi, and I already explained a unmarked police car... The police lights when lit up are disco lights, or gumball machine... If a police car is lighting you up, you'd say: "uh oh, bubble gum machine done hit the jackpot"... If you want to know more of the old CB terms, I'd be glad to tell ya... I grew up around CBs since the early 1980s...
Do people still use handles? Seems like there is so little traffic that there is not much need to name yourself. How about "breaker" as in "breaker 19?" Again, usually there is no traffic to "break" into.
Ty Banks I'm old school. Been driving for 24 years. I still say "smokie" sometimes, but usually follow it with "bear" (ie: smokie bear). Also, good info and advice on your part. There are so many trucker terms that can't be explained in one video, but good start. Hammer down! Keep the shiny side up and the dirty side down.
Brakes! Brake check! Pay attention. This is the most important. Other than that fancy southern jargon for any and every term there is already a name for. Just speak english. Learn to understand the jargon as you go. And don’t become a chatty cathy out there on channel 19 like most southerners. A little southern hospitality would go along way “take it up to channel2-?” Keep 19 clear for road conditions and alerts. Take the “i told my driver manager...” crap to a different channel.
I am not waving at anyone then I cannot physically see I am not your good buddy and I’m not getting down from anywhere or anything. Everybody says they are getting down but they can’t tell me where they’re getting down from or what it is they’re getting down from or how high they were. The CB is known as the Children’s Band. Broadcasting is a One Way communication. When you talk on a CB it is not Broadcasting it is transmitting. If nobody uses a term then why mention it.Most drivers don’t use channel 19 unless there is a problem and they want to see what is going on and then they go back to their other channel.
Just depends on the side you on, I believe westbound yardsticks increase (1, 2, 3, 4 etc on the westbound), and decrease (4, 3, 2, 1 etc on the eastbound)...
where I'm from on these roads far as the law concerned we have city kitties County mounties full grown and and these are bears checking that ground pressure
Jason D. It’s a good thing to alert on 19, if you want to just jabber then connect and both go to another channel. If you aren’t on 19 when things happen, you likely won’t know till it’s to late.
Now see, if we are gonna deviate from the term pigs for cops, and granny lane for the slow lane, to me it makes sense to use Momma bear, Poppa bear and baby bears.
thank you, but if you drive east to west down I10 you will see the 24 hr taco check sponcered by ins and your tax dollars. and north on I35 from Lerado Texas as well and parts of Arizona.
What happened to a cop with a camera being a kojak with a Kodak or a county cop being a COUNTY MOUNTIE? and cops are or were always known as BEARS.....or Smokies....... also a cop with radar/camera was a picture taker.....
They are still terms used! This want intended as a terminology video, I made it to teach new drivers who are nervous to talk on radios the basics and how to start off
Interesting, people still use cbs ? We have laptops, cellphones,fm radios uhf/vhf,gmrs,frs and Nextel walkie talkies . Cb era ended late 80s early 90s. I can turn mine on and hear nothing anymore. Cb radios are dead, thanks to new communications.
TheParanormal70 but you aren’t gonna call the group ahead or behind on your cell phone and find out there is a white out, a pileup, a flooded area, a bridge out or a tornado. CB was good till morons started amping up and being foul mouthed music playing POS.
City kitty and local yokel - city cop, smokey (smokey and the bandit) county mount - county cop, bear - state trooper, diesel bear - D.O.T., plain white wrapper - just a white cop car, plain black wrapper - black cop car whatever color cop car it is that's color wrapper it is, and last but not least evil Kenevil - motorcycle cop.
Forgot the most important one: always talk with a southern accent, doesn't matter if you're from Maine, you best sound like you're from Alabama...
Haha very true!
You got that right!😂😂😂
C.P.L. Chronicles, what about the most important ones???😲
*10-4, What's ur 20?*
Absolutely! Then once the southern accent has been mastered, it's time to practice sounding like a shit salesman with a mouthful of free samples! If you can do that, you will have officially arrived at becoming a true professional!!!

Most of the radio traffic over the airwaves is garbage. I turn it down most of the time. I only use it when I need to talk to someone at a facility
How can someone get over "the truck behind you"? Considered using a Yagi beam and rotator to really get out to that truck just behind you.
What model CB do you use?
Shaky town- LA
Bean town- Boston
He forgot the biggest one 10-4
Swindle sheets- log book
Skateboard- flat bed
Kojak with a Kodak- HP running radar
Gumball- officer with a single light up top
Choke n puke- truck stop restaurant
Chi town- Chicago
Flag town- Flagstaff
Got your back door- trucker has your lane blocked so you can get over
The list goes on and on.
how do you like being a truck driver
Good info. Thanks and safe travels.
Breaker breaker 19 have you seen the bandit
Good stuff. Thanks for the info. I just ordered a radio.
Good info, thanks.
Correct me if I'm wrong what if you're going eastbound and the mile markers says 42 it's not going to say the same thing in the westbound Lane is it?
the mile markers are the same on both sides
Yes it is.
Lately I've been hearing the weigh stations being called a Scale House.
Well considering the fact that that's what they are then it makes sense that they would be called that.
what would you call the fire trucks and ambulances???
+Trey Smith I call them fire truck and ambulance
we used to say SMOKIE is taking PICTURES!
Kojak with a Kodak!
I said 10-4 to a girl at work once, she was like 'huh'?
I have heard the term "City Kitty" for local police before and for state police driving white cars I have heard them referred to as "Polar Bears" before.
"plain white wrapper"... That's tbe term for an unmarked police car...
@@therayven3147 Oh I like that one
@@burtonh1 yeah, the other terms were, local yokel for a city cop, a county cop is a county mounty, a state cop is a super trooper... A fully lit up police car is a Tijuana taxi, and I already explained a unmarked police car... The police lights when lit up are disco lights, or gumball machine... If a police car is lighting you up, you'd say: "uh oh, bubble gum machine done hit the jackpot"...
If you want to know more of the old CB terms, I'd be glad to tell ya...
I grew up around CBs since the early 1980s...
What about a 10 wheel. Like a dump truck or something. Those aren’t 4 or 18
It’s kojak with a kodak. Police with a radar gun.
Do people still use handles? Seems like there is so little traffic that there is not much need to name yourself.
How about "breaker" as in "breaker 19?" Again, usually there is no traffic to "break" into.
Can someone put subtitles on this guy please ? :D
Good Info, solid video as your Short & to the point. Question: the term "Smokie" still being used at all?
+Ty Banks nah bro not really. Is always just full grown bear or just bear..A few of timers still use old slang but not too many.
Kojak with a Kodak.
Heck yes it is.
I hope it does not get like it did in the 70-80s it’s was bad , so many ppl talking and trying to talk over ppl . It was a mess !
Ok here’s a question and I keep forgetting to check for my self but are mile markers the same on both East and West bound
Yes
Just depends on the side you on, I believe westbound yardsticks increase (1, 2, 3, 4 etc on the westbound), and decrease (4, 3, 2, 1 etc on the eastbound)...
where I'm from on these roads far as the law concerned we have city kitties County mounties full grown and and these are bears checking that ground pressure
Catch ya on the flip flop.... Keep the shiny side up and the dirty side down... Ahh the good old days
I'ma 4wheeler with a cb. Are 18 wheelers usually on the same channel? Is it bad etiquette for a smaller wheeler to alert on that/those channels?
Jason D. It’s a good thing to alert on 19, if you want to just jabber then connect and both go to another channel. If you aren’t on 19 when things happen, you likely won’t know till it’s to late.
Thanks man, very appreciated.
The middle lane on a three lane is the big truck hammer lane.
Left Lane is PASSING LANE, middle Lane is CRUISING LANE, right lane is SLOW VEHICLE LANE,
Would you say Road name before direction bound? Or do CB not reach very far?
Daniel Richwalski typically they reach 5-7 miles. Always good to call out the road and direction especially around interchanges and crossways.
It’s fun to mess around 😂
Now see, if we are gonna deviate from the term pigs for cops, and granny lane for the slow lane, to me it makes sense to use Momma bear, Poppa bear and baby bears.
thank you, but if you drive east to west down I10 you will see the 24 hr taco check sponcered by ins and your tax dollars. and north on I35 from Lerado Texas as well and parts of Arizona.
What the heck is a taco check?
Can you say county mounty for sheriff
You look like the guy who would spit chew in a water bottle
LOL, thanks for that mental image
Yeah, he probably says no homo a lot too
@@my_name_is_chef4856 if the panties fit.........
in a mountain dew bottle hand
Love me some spit chew....
Does 4 wheeler go for pick up and trailer?
A Pick-em Up with A Hitch Hiker.
What happened to a cop with a camera being a kojak with a Kodak or a county cop being a COUNTY MOUNTIE? and cops are or were always known as BEARS.....or Smokies.......
also a cop with radar/camera was a picture taker.....
They are still terms used! This want intended as a terminology video, I made it to teach new drivers who are nervous to talk on radios the basics and how to start off
Did u pay off the truck what happens when u are going to pay it off
Hell one of the rules you should have added is that super bowler's need to stay the hell of the trucker channels
What's a super bowler?
What about them 2 wheelers. A evil knivel or a helicopter bear in the air
What's the term for looking for man love at the showers?
Sausage at the Chicken Coop
Good buddy
headhunter
Wham!
George Michael
not only did I play music on my radio but I also sang my lil tunes on it I liked to have fun when I drove truck in my 30 + years driving
What is the term used for undercover cops?
James Carr unmarked car: plain wrapper
there's a kojak with a kodak i use that when i'm going on a day trip or fishing
Thank you for the advice my friend
Great job driver. I'm based out of San Diego run that part of the country often. Last week it hit 121 deg sitting at the TA
7/15. Hey do you still drive for crst
Haven't heard anybody mention "hand." Its quite obvious that most of you havent been driving long.
Hey there! Have you heard about Truckers for Andrew Yang?!?
Some of your lango must be new.
They should change the full-grown bear lingo, Make it “big bear”makes more sense.
Don't forget show-off lane
City kitty and county mountie. Never heard anybody call em a baby bear.
Interesting,people still use cbs ?
We have laptops, cellphones,fm radios uhf/vhf,gmrs,frs and Nextel walkie talkies .
Cb era ended late 80s early 90s.
I can turn mine on and hear nothing anymore.
Cb radios are dead, thanks to new communications.
TheParanormal70 but you aren’t gonna call the group ahead or behind on your cell phone and find out there is a white out, a pileup, a flooded area, a bridge out or a tornado. CB was good till morons started amping up and being foul mouthed music playing POS.
“Kojack with a Kodak” bear w/ a radar gun
You don't have to yell into the mic. Just talk normal. If you normally yell,,,don't talk.
