  • Unfortunately, some voices fall into disrepair. A voice can become damaged for a whole number of reasons, with the level of injury varying from acute vocal strain through to chronic issues including vocal fold paralysis and laryngeal cancer.
Regardless, singers who experience voice damage generally have one question: “Will my damaged voice ever fully recover?”

Hi Dr Dan, terrific and concise, addressing a massive question..one that pops up very frequently! There is no black and white answer that fully satisfies and simply puts the issue at rest. As you say, causes, therapy and progress are multifactorial.
That "looking into a crystal ball" is what people would like...me included! But it's not possible.
And a good thing too I think. That's just life.
If there is dysfunction of any sort, the main aim is to seek out the root of the problem, and manage it with reliable professional help, as you have advised.
Best advice at the end, prevention first!
    Cheers,
    Lin.

I'm in that situation... I've been sad and depressed since 2014 when my voice fell victim of my gastric reflux (that had been taking a toll on my voice ever since I was 12 and diagnosed), my falsetto (or disconnected high headvoice) is simply inexistent and my "favorite" ghost called hoarseness is always lurking and kicking, I have delayed phonation that requires more air to produce notes... some regions of my range are simply missing, my gastric reflux is so strong that I have to actually sleep with an upright position of the entire back to relieve the attack, I've been taking esomeprazol for years (shouldn't) to hold back the heartburns and slept with an empty stomach for years and even so I wake up in the middle of the night when pure gastric fluid reaches the vocal folds and try to get in the trachea... I cough it all out and feel the grind on my poor vocal folds. Nevertheless, I'm a Brazilian enthusiast about voice physiology, I love to try to coordinate all sorts of combinations of muscles and use it all to my benefit when singing with my band with the short and discontinued range sections I can still access. Sad but ture. If I had money, I'd go through surgery, but no wonder I just wrote a hypothetical if clause. Thanks Dr. Dan for all your videos, I learned almost every thing I know with you.

Wagner, you could possibly have the opposite of too much acid. It causes the same symptoms of reflux, but isn’t helped by normal PPIs or antacids. It is called hypochlorhydia (low acid) or achlorhydia (no stomach acid). I had the same symptoms as you, and nothing seemed to help (antacid, proton pump inhibitors, low acid diet, sleeping sitting up, eating at least 4-5 hours before bed) and found out that I had hypochlorydia. It was damaging my voice as well, including causing small vocal nodules at the area the acid would usually sit while I was sleeping. One of the causes of these disorders is an overgrowth of a very common but insidious bacteria called H-Pylori. It can be treated with antibiotics, however, some stains have become antibiotic resistant, so you have to get retested to make sure it has killed the bacteria, and if it is resistant, the doctor can prescribe different medications that the bacteria isn’t resistant to. It can also be caused by other things, but if you are able, it might be a good idea to check it out with your doctor. Antacids and proton pump inhibitors can exacerbate the situation, unfortunately. A test you can do at home to see if you have low acid, is to take 1/4 teaspoon baking soda with 1/2 cup water. Drink it quickly and see how long it takes you to burp. If it takes 1-3 minutes, your acid is normal or high, if it takes 3-5 or longer minutes, that can be an indicator of low acid. Mine was so low, that I never burped. The treatments for low acid are different, but there is hope.

Dr Dan, I hemorrhaged my vocal chords 30 years ago by singing without warming up before a 3 hour concert. Not smart, I know. We took 15 minute breaks each hour but obviously it wasn't enough. Then with a sore throat, I sang two songs the next day. I had a sore throat from ear to ear for 8 months because I couldn't afford the doctor visit. When I did go, a scope through my nose revealed a purple blister in the middle of one half of my chords. I stopped singing for a year (or two) and when I started up again, I found that if I sang low notes, my throat would get irritated but recover overnight. The same problem continues to this day. Because of this I usually don't sing more than one song, once a month. A recent scope test showed that the blister is gone. I did have classical voice training for 5 years (1975-1980) and am a lyric soprano. I am not hoarse and recently I have developed a daily sore throat but my medical doctor says it's from TMJ which started this year. I did see a Speech Therapist about 5 years ago (2018) . I increased my water intake. I have endoscopies every 3 years because of a hiatal hernia. I assume my doctor would know if my vocal chords looked damaged. Do you have any ideas on what could be causing irritation from low notes only? Thank you for any advice you can give.

I was strangled by my meth addicted boyfriend. Singing was one of my greatest joys in life and things are so dark. I feel like I do not want to live like this. It's a terrible loss. And a constant reminder of the foolish choice I made to trust a drug addict. But I still love him and hold out hope that he will get clean and that he was sincere about being in love with me. I can't swallow right either. I see here theres several ways that someone can lose their lovely singing voice, so at least I'm not alone there.

I’ve been feeling really depressed hoping my voice would heal after having laryngitis. I used my voice too much while having laryngitis and I used to be so good at singing I thought it will just come back when I’m older. I guess I gotta wait for the future. But as of right now it’s made me extremely depressed and upset that I can’t have those good vocals anymore since I love singing.

So I haven’t finished this video yet but I have a question. So my voice has changed with my own voice changing for about 2 years now sense I am still quite young but my question is I have mainly used decent technique and I haven’t noticed much things different then my singing voice being inconsistent on certain days starting last year I have lost my falsetto but not completely, let me explain I can use falsetto still but unfortunately I can’t go as high as I used to recently I have begun to get it back but it’s still not full. Sense my voice has been getting better is this a good sign and is it possible for me to fix my voice at least a decent about of it?

I haven't been able to sing "normally" with a neutral larynx ever in my entire life, but for the past 18 months I cannot sing quietly and neutrally above A3 without cracking into head voice. Seen many voice teachers, doctors, and therapists. Nothing obviously wrong except an abnormality in the mucosal wave in my left vocal fold. My speaking voice is largely unaffected, as it lies below A3. Any ideas? Doctors, teachers, and therapists are at a total loss. Exactly 0 improvement for 18 months.
I even got a temporary injection in the left vocal fold, which improved my vocal glide ability and generally aided with closure, but I had even less chest voice before the effects finally wore off.

Hello! My voice used to reach high notes with ease but when I got sick and lost my voice completely for one day and after that one day I had to sing and help my classmates with some assessments. Meaning I had to talk and strain my voice. I understand that I shouldn't have done that but it was my finals and during finals I get the most stressed especially with group activities. I think the cause of my sore throat was because I kept straining my voice for about 2 weeks and then another week since I had finals and group projects due. It's been about 2-3 days since I couldn't reach high notes.....I'm super worried since I really love my voice but now it's...gone. Should I rest for a few days without talking completely. thank you for the advice

I’m recovering from Hay Fever induced Laryngitis. I went without speaking entirely for a full 24 hours but ended up having to go back to work where I need my voice. I’ve not been yelling, abstained from alcohol and caffeine, drinking Traditional Medicinals great Coat daily, Apple Cider Vinegar diluted in water, i such on honey Ricola lozenges all day long, and I’ve always taken many vitamins. It’s day 5 and my voice sounds back to normal, but my Head voice is practically gone. I’m worried it might never come back and I’m starting to get paranoid about nodes. How long is long enough to start worrying it might be permanent damage?

Hi Dr. Dan! Found you after searching for a way to heal my voice. I sometimes get a flu during winter, and if I lose my voice and/or involves coughing or a sore throat, my voice tends to require months to recover. This happened this year as well. My voice has recovered maybe 78%, but some of my mid-range notes are either missing or take an extra moment to prepare to sing. I have gone to the Ear/Nose/Throat doctor and they did not see what the problem could be. Twice I was prescribed steroids and they didn't do much to change the situation. I'd really like to know what I could do to recover my lost notes. This has presented problems since I am a professional singer, and I have projects I've put on hold, and I have had to pass over gigs. Help! Thank you.

Hi there! I'm sorry to hear that you've been struggling with your voice recovery. It's important to remember that I'm not a medical doctor, but I can provide some general advice to help you explore potential solutions.
First, it's great that you've already consulted an Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor, as that's an essential first step. However, if your concerns haven't been fully addressed, it is a good idea to seek a second opinion or consult with a voice specialist or speech-language pathologist.
In the meantime, here are a few general tips that might help you on your path to recovery:
      1. Voice rest: Make sure to give your voice adequate rest, especially when you're experiencing symptoms or when your voice feels strained.
      2. Hydration: Drink plenty of water to keep your vocal folds hydrated and reduce irritation. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, as they can cause dehydration.
      3. Humidify: Use a humidifier to maintain optimal humidity levels in your environment, which can help keep your vocal folds moist and healthy.
      4. Warm-up: Before singing, ensure you are doing proper vocal warm-ups to reduce the risk of injury and strain.
      5. Vocal exercises: Work with a vocal coach or voice therapist to develop a customised set of vocal exercises to help you regain your vocal range and strength.
      6. Manage reflux: If you experience acid reflux, it can cause irritation and swelling in the throat. Speak with a healthcare professional about potential treatments or dietary changes that may help.
      7. Avoid irritants: Avoid exposure to irritants like smoke, pollution, and allergens that can exacerbate vocal issues.
      8. Mindful technique: Use proper singing techniques to reduce strain and promote vocal health. A vocal coach can help you with this as well.
It's essential to be patient with your recovery and work closely with healthcare professionals to identify the root cause and appropriate treatments. I hope these tips can help you on your journey, and I wish you a swift and successful recovery!

my voice sounds fine, but my vocal endurance is completely shot. it's gotten to the point where singing one line can reignite pain and discomfort, and even speaking hurts. ive been drinking so much water and tea, and not singing, but everything's getting worse. i thought after a few months and taking it easy that i could get better. but i'm getting a doctors appointment late april and hopefully things will be okay.

    • @DrDanRobinson
      @DrDanRobinson  Рік тому

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing pain and discomfort while using your voice. It's great that you've been proactive in caring for yourself by staying hydrated and resting your voice. However, if the issue persists, it's definitely a good idea to consult a medical professional to get a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
A doctor's appointment in late April will give you an opportunity to discuss your concerns and symptoms in detail. They may refer you to an ENT specialist or a speech therapist, depending on the underlying cause of your vocal issues.
In the meantime, continue to rest your voice as much as possible, avoid vocal strain, and maintain good hydration. You may also want to try some gentle humming exercises to help keep your vocal flexibility but remember to stop immediately if you feel any pain or discomfort. It's essential to listen to your body and not push yourself too hard during this time.
Hopefully, with the right medical advice and treatment, you'll be on the path to recovery and regain your vocal endurance. Remember, healing takes time, and it's essential to be patient with yourself during this process.

I am in theatre both musical and not, and choir. When doing musical theatre the characters I am assigned are mezzo sopranos when I, myself am an alto and for regular theatre they often have me use a loud voice for my characters, my most recent one I had to scream like I was dying because I was a victim in a murder mystery. With all this going on my choir practices every other day, and I seldom find time to rest especially with my other classes and find myself using my voice a lot even when sick or strained. It has been a month or two now and I noticed that my throat gets hurt a lot easier, and that notes I was able to hit before was met with voice cracks. Do you think going on vocal rest for a month or two will help?

It sounds like you're really dedicated to your craft and are putting in a lot of hard work! However, the human voice is a delicate instrument and needs to be cared for to avoid damage. If you're feeling strain and noticing a change in your vocal abilities, it's a clear sign that your vocal folds could use a rest. While taking some time off can certainly help, it would also be beneficial to consult with a vocal coach or a speech-language pathologist who can guide you on safe voice usage techniques and offer personalized advice. Remember, taking care of your voice is an essential part of being a performer! 🎭🎵👍

I know I’ve already commented but my voice still hasn’t healed. I used to be able to hit high notes but now I immediately go to singing loudly. It’s coming back slowly im guessing and slowly improving but im only 12 and im not sure if it’s puberty or I actually damaged my vocals because I used to sing everyday before I got sick and had a sore throat and laryngitis. While having laryngitis I used it too much. It’s frustrating and scary to know that I may possibly not be able to ever sing well enough again. My voice used to be high but could go really low but now it’s a little lower and I can sing in really low notes but I also can used a high voice to sing along to other songs sometimes before my voice cracks and I have to clear it again. Do you think it’s damaged or just puberty? If it’s not puberty if I just rest it do you think it could come back stronger and better?

Deviated septum can be operated. Because of this you may have problems with nasality, so you may have problems accesing head voice (so you lose your range) and speaking nasal sounds like "m" or "n"

I can't sing in falsetto and losing my upper register, do you think this is because vocal damage ?

    • @DrDanRobinson
      @DrDanRobinson  Рік тому

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing difficulties with your upper register and falsetto. There could be several reasons for this, including vocal strain, improper singing technique, inadequate warm-ups or cooldowns, overuse, lack of hydration, or even an illness such as a cold or allergies.
It's possible that vocal damage could cause such issues, but it's also possible that these difficulties are temporary or reversible with proper rest, technique modification, and care. However, it's essential to get a professional evaluation if you're concerned about potential vocal damage.
I strongly recommend that you consult with a voice teacher or a voice therapist who can assess your situation properly. If you have persistent issues or pain, a visit to a laryngologist, a doctor specializing in the throat and vocal cords, would be advisable.
Please remember not to strain your voice or push beyond your comfort zone in the meantime. It's important to take care of your vocal health and seek professional help if you're experiencing persistent difficulties.
Take care, and I hope you recover your full vocal range soon.

Hello Dr. Dan, i am only 17 and i'm worried that my voice is damaged. It got a lot deeper than before for at least 6 months and i haven't been able to sing higher anymore. I am aware that i was singing with bad techniques which could lead to this, but can it also be caused by puberty? Also my voice, since i started to try singing, gets dry very easily and drinking water doesn't help or even make it worse. This also affects my talking voice as well. Do you know how to rest my voice without talking too less (because i still go to school) or go to a therapist? (My parents wouldn't understand the seriousness of my issue)
By the way, thanks for giving us useful informations through this channel.

Dr Dan. How about those NPC patients who went for radiotherapy and subsequently have tongue wasting and losing their voice? Any chance of recovery?

    • @DrDanRobinson
      @DrDanRobinson  Рік тому

Radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) can indeed cause side effects like tongue wasting and voice changes due to the impact on the muscles and nerves in the area. The chance of recovery varies greatly depending on individual circumstances, such as the extent of the damage, the specific location of the cancer, the individual's overall health, and more.
For some, these effects can be temporary and improve over time, while for others, they might be more lasting. Rehabilitation usually involves working with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare providers, including speech-language pathologists, who can provide specific exercises and strategies to help improve tongue strength and mobility, speech, and swallowing.
However, it's essential to have a conversation with the oncologist or treating physician who would have the most accurate understanding of the particular case. They can give the best advice regarding prognosis and treatment options.
Remember, each person's journey with cancer is unique, and medical science continues to make advancements in treatment and rehabilitation every day. Support and persistence can go a long way in navigating these challenges. I hope that helps.

Maybe this is my issue as well. I have a naturally high pitched voice. I’m not a singer, I feel that I sound like a baby when I sing.
I went to college for the first time in 2015.. within a few months I fell sick and lost 100% of my voice while sick. It lasted a month and eventually my natural speaking voice returned, but I’m incapable of screaming or singing without straining.
When I try to scream it just sounds like pushing air. ENT also didn’t see nodules, but said my vocal cords were inflamed and it was most likely due to Silent GERD. I remember him giving me a list of things not to eat, but my insurance ran out before my next checkup and I was a homeless college student with no family at the time. So I had no idea how the world worked still.
It’s now 2024, and I still cannot scream or sing above my normal speaking voice. Every blue moon I can slip out a scream for a second, but it’s always a false hope. It’s scary honestly, to think that if I need help I can’t scream.
