I bought the 1CM thick Gel Pad to install! Now you are giving me second thoughts to go thicker!!! I haven't installed it yet so it's not too late to buy another 1CM thick Gel Pad to layer one on top of the other one.
@@builditwithrob finished it up2:30 am today. Love it. Neighbors weren’t as happy but I had to try it out. Total investment of $45.00 vs $480.00 for a new seat. Thanks again.
Great job, Rob! I like that you matched the fabric pattern blocks for both pieces. Also, you laid it on at what appears to be a 45 degree angle. Nice Gel Pad installation and cover making. Thanks for the demo! Have a great day!
This is one of the better diy bike seat gel mods I've watched on YT. Great modification! I'm not particularly pleased with the choice of fabric but opinions are like a**holes and it's easy to change. Overall, it looks great. Thanks for sharing this build.
Hey, Rob. I'm curious. How was the mod? Did it make things more comfortable substantially? Please let us know your final review and thoughts about the thickness? Would you do 2CM thick again or would 1CM be enough?
I am about preparing for this operation myself. The moment of the first cut into the stock material is always a bit painful for me, because there is just no going back. I got myself a new bike this summer, and the stock seat gives me after 45 minutes or the the impression that I sit on the plastic shell. My quick solution was a pair of bicycle shorts. But long term I really want a gel pad installed firmly into the seat.
I got a 2020 Benelli Leoncino 500 a month ago. Already had first service, it is a blast to ride. But that seat...it looks comfortable, but in reality it just is not. When you press it down, it even does not appear that soft. Anyways, I have the gelpad ready from my old XT 600, as soon as the weather gets bad here (or in November), I will rip off that stock seat and take it apart. I want to go camping with this thing (it has a really good weight capacity), with that seat even a 200 km trip will feel like a punishment. We will see whether the original seat cover stays, because I would like something a bit more special.
How were you managing before vs after installing the gel pad, ie how long before you were struggling on a ride before and after? I'm on an ER6 and after an hour I need a break. I tried an air pad to sit on top of the seat but you lose all the feeling you get from the road, it adds seat height, it moves about and it didn't work all that much better than the stock seat, so I'm going to do this over the winter.
Hi James I rode R1 for around 1 to 2 hours before getting a dead ass, installing the gel pad made a huge difference to me I can now ride for several hours in comfort
Hi Rob! Great video, can you please tell me where you got that lovely thick gel from? It's exactly what I'm looking for! Do you have a link to the gel please? really appricate your help on this. Best Joe
@@builditwithrob Hi, the link has expired but I managed to find one the same as yours! Got the thicker one and will install soon. Has yours made a good difference to the ride?
I think you’ve just convinced me to try this myself 😂 the xsr seat is shocking after 100 miles! How easy was it to refit the main fabric? But of a pain with the staples?
Wery nice, but i thing you could buy two pads of gel, and made all of the seat, not only that parts, because you will feel the differences betwen thats two parts, gel and old cushion.
I'm impressed that you work right on your shiny table surface! priorities! Hahaha!

I have to admire people that can do stuff like this, I'm no good at DIY, and I just wouldn't have the confidence.
Man. Nice job. Now I’m gonna do mine after watching this. Thanks for posting
Your welcome bud, made such a difference

Curious as to what size/length of staples you used

Hello Antonio it made such a difference to the ride, absolutely amazing so comfortable I would highly recommend
Do you think it would be over kill do put a gel pad and memory basically two layers ?
Hi Ray It’s not a bad idea if you have enough slack on seat fabric for the extra layer
Build it with Rob ok thx I’m probably going to get some more fabric

@@builditwithrob thanks man, how are you finding the gel seat now do you find it better over long periods of time and does it give good support
It’s fantastic jack so much softer, moulds nicely gives really good support over long distance

@@builditwithrob Brilliant, that's good to know, thank you. And cheers for the swift response. 😁
can you just put the gel in top of the foam?
Hey, yes if you cut a small amount of foam away gel sits straight in
Did you just staple into the foam or what?
Hello
Under the seat is plastic I stapled into that
Could you send me a link for the materials
Yes off course give me couple hours
I’ve added a link in description, thank you
I enjoyed your video, thanks !
Your welcome Stephen
Rob I have been looking and haven’t found any seat upholstery material like you are using. Any idea where I could source some?
Black and white
Where did you order the fabric? Is it weatherproof?
I purchased the new fabric on eBay, yes it’s waterproof and looks far better then the standard

Hey Calum. Real easy job to fit gel pad I changed original fabric for new but should be simple to refit

Hello calutzubv you honestly don’t feel difference between the two, the gel is super soft long rides is no longer a problem
