  • For more intensive recording videos, please visit my site www.creatingthesound.com. What’s a breakbeat without the snare drum? Trends come and go, but the snare remains at the heart of pop music. Session drummer Dylan Wissing (Alicia Keys, Drake, John Legend) demonstrates his legendary collection of snare drums dating back one hundred years. For more information on Dylan, including custom drum tracks, loops and samples, visit www.indiestudiodrummer.com.

      It's one of my favorites, and I've never changed anything from when I bought it ten years ago. That drum just has a certain something that none of my other drums do. I just hope it never breaks - I'm not sure where you go for parts on a hundred year-old Wilson Bros. drum!

    These can’t have the original snares. Ive have my grandfathers 1940s radio king1 ply maple since I was a kid. It’s always sounded like a sneeze. Even worse when it had its natural calf skin heads🤣

    • @DylanWissing
      @DylanWissing  4 роки тому +1

      Definitely not. This particular drum has had a LOT of renovations over the decades. It can sound great in the right context, really crappy in the wrong one - NOT an all-purpose drum by any stretch of the imagination! As much as I love the idea and history of the Radio King snare drum, I've found that you really need to spend some time with one before committing to it - there can be some real lemons out there! I hope that you always keep your grandfather's drum though. What a great thing to still have in the family!

    • @danablett
      @danablett 4 роки тому +7

      ffs, its not meant to be a true comparison. He's demonstrating what each drum can do, not make them compete against each other. He brought out a different personality in each drum, which is the point of having a snare collection.

    ... at least put the mics at the same settings.. each sample sounds completely different ...

      Honestly, they were made to sound different - these are the drums I use for my session work, and just as every song is completely different, so is every drum, miking arrangement, and mix! We'll have some stuff coming out soon on my website Getting the Sound (www.gettingthesound.com) that very specifically has carefully-controlled shootouts on various elements of drums and recording. Thanks for watching!

    Multi micing in such a stuffy room. Some of the clips sound so phasey.

    Hard to compare. Muffled audio in some. Too much treble in others. I with it was recorded with the same equipment for a true shootout.

    TBH, most of the drums kinda sound like crap, but 1:17 is my favorite sounding drum

    What was the point of this ???........certainly not to showcase how each drum sounds. By using all the processing tools, equalization and mastering button / effects, muffling, zero rings, wallet, down tuned heads, gated verb, echo etc, this did NOT give the listener any indication what those snares really sound like.

      These are all drums that I use in my studio sessions, and each is tuned and treated in very different ways depending on what the track calls for. This is very definitely NOT a scientific shootout - more like an artistic shootout. Hope that helps!
