Bonus: If you work retail (cashier specifically), getting copper pennies as a literal goldmine. Bring a 50 cent roll everyday and switch them out with your zinc. Also helps pass time
I waited tables for many years,I actually got my father's collection going. I would keep any wheats, found a couple Indian heads and I would keep the Kennedy half dollars for him. When I returned home after years of living elsewhere my mom had spent them all😢
I save all pre 83 pennies and separate them in by decade. 50's 60's 70's and 80 81 and 82's. When I was growing up pre 65 silver dimes and quarters were given back in change constantly. That being said that was the last precious metals that we had in common coinage. Now copper pennies are the new precious metals of future collectors. Zinc pennies will never have a precious metal value. So anything pre 83 will in the future have value other than the condition of the coin. Just watch and see. Won't happen soon but 10-20 or 30 years from now they will be worth much more just due to the metal content.
You can melt copper pennies for "art purposes". That's why the penny smashers/rollers that put a picture on them are legal. Or until they stop making them. Canada quick making their penny in I think 2013 and they stopped making copper pennies after 1996. I have a lot of Canadian coin living in Michigan.
You forgot to add in the cost of melting the pennies. And it is legal to melt as long as you aren't melting for profit. What you can do is melt them into figurines and sell them for the value of your craftsmanship, which has nothing to do with the value of the copper itself.
Started checking my change again because of you my Dad taught me coin collecting but got out of it now after 15 or so years I've jumped back in the game because of your videos I'm 24 now
In other news, Happy hunting to all who participate in this modern day mining adventure. May we all find a rare error one day and know our time was well spent : ) To Mr Couch Collectibles: I am considering becoming a coin grader. Have you ever become one? If so, any advice? Secondly, I've heard there are bags of pennies you can order from a bank, is this true?
I started going through penny boxes a few years ago during an illness and saved all the copper ones. I rolled and boxed them, but as I recovered, I started having less and less time to do it. I now have 42 boxes of copper pennies rolled up. Is there a market for them now or do I just return them to circulation at face value?
@@timgrant8729 yeah I've been saving all my 82's weighing in at 3.1 also..... Only have one small date but yet to find one with that weight... I think I will eventually
I feel the same even though I still collect and keep a lot but I have some copper pennies that look Better than most zinc! I love the 60's and 70's pennies the most!❤
At the risk of sounding selfish [DUDE don't sound the bell about it XD] For real tho, As someone who collects it, it makes me nervous that arguably the FED can stop our fun at any time by taking it themselves. I hope they do not do so. Imagine if loomis turned against us...
Perhaps if you’re earning near minimum wage, then, yes, it might behoove you to search through hundreds of thousands of Lincoln Cents monthly to find those pre-1983 Bronze examples. 🧐 😲😳😬 🤣😂🤣
Very nice... Thank you so much, i always learn somthing new here... Penny coll't. Is great.. I have way too many, ill start selling soon..maby buy a old world-war-2 jeep, deep woods camping.. Thanks again...🎉..

You also need to check the 82s. Some are zinc
@@PsychoMantis308 fact
@@PsychoMantis308 i dont collect 82's bc of that reason too much of a hassle
Anybody want to buy some wheat pennies. 1944- 1957 ?? Two in uncirculated condition.

How can u tell the diff between the 1982 coppers and the 1982 zincs?
They have a different weight.....also a different sound when dropped onto a table or counter top.

I imagine an alternate universe in which pennies and dimes flip in size and pennies are copper-nickel and dimes are copper plated zinc.
I do collect every single one I find.

Secondly,

I have two that are blank although you could almost see a wheat back on one. Are those just blanks or errors and do they hold value?
I separate my copper cents from my zinc

Thanks for the info
I don't even bother collecting the new shield cents. There is nothing appealing to me about them
Except double dies
I got 2 2024 pennies overseas doubleing
What about 1982 small date?
You’d have to weigh it. Copper Pennies are 3.11 grams, zinc Pennies are 2.5 grams
Ive been going through mine sifting n deciding....
Keep all pre 83 cents. It's a long term investment. Seriously.

Also have two buffalo nickels ,one date 1929 . other date gone .
It is a felony to melt pennies for its copper content
What about the 1942 wheat penny
Behooves😂

Melt value?
If you melt them to sell at spot copper price, that is 20 years in prison.
So, is it worth it? :-0)
I have seme coin

I have 1982d large date
its the 1982-D SMALL date weighing 3.1 grams thats the money maker
