This performance has been called 'borderline deranged' (Alex Ross, New Yorker May 2, 2019) but I think it's magnificent. The dramatic opening with its long pauses is masterful, both in Beethoven's score and Furtwangler's interpretation. To better understand the music, understand the anguish and the drama of the opera's story. Furtwangler extracts a power from Beethoven that few conductors can. Bravo!

+Steve Schatz Comments as yours I enjoy very much because they give me evidence that at the other end of the line there is someone who is able to understand what I do. Clicks or even likes cannot do this. Thank you.
Soon will come Beethoven´s 4th from the same concert.

I had the joyful experience of talking my wife into listening to THAT recording, via you, headphones; of the 4th. She positively jumped out of her seat at the shift at 3:49 - turned with a big grin and said "Well, allrighty then!!" Highly gratifying. Thank you! :-)

The best thing about Furtwängler's version of Coriolan (besides it's unbelievable intensity and magical transitions to the lyrical melody) is the timpani roll he added to the final crescendo leading to the climax (not written in the score!), which is genius and so appropriate because it goes hand in hand with what the thunderous tympani throughout. One of the truly great interpretations by this master.

I wonder if whoever recorded it thought it was over at the pizzicato. Sometimes, when you're performing in front of people unfamiliar with the piece, and there's an ending with pauses, they clap at the first pause because they don't realize there's more to come. It becomes crucial for the performer to give some sort of physical cue (i.e.--hands raised over piano, intense stare--in the case of an orchestra, outspread arms of the conductor) to show the audience that "No! We're not done yet!" Anyway, still a great recording and great performance! Thanks for sharing.

Yes, this is an annoying problem. And it cannot be asked by the conductor or a solist to shorten the pause so that an unfamiliar and hasty listener will not start clapping !!
By the way, why are those who do not know a piece are rushing so much to clap? Why don't they wait for others to start clapping?

    • @primostendardi5779
      @primostendardi5779 4 роки тому

Which venue was this concert performed? The old Berlin Philharmonic hall? Each sound is much transparent and brilliant rather than the old day's recording released during World War II.

A technical note. How were they able to record, amid the bombing. Did they do it early in the morning, for instance?

This concert took place a few months before things turned bad for Berliners, there was no major bombing of Berlin until November 1943 and anyway the subsequent raids were done at night.

This supreme Coriolan is drama from the first note to the last. Toscanini's version, on the other hand, is too fast and plain. It happens nothing. And I admire him, too.

This is available on the internet and CD direct from the original tape, WITHOUT your intervening FM distortion, crap cassette or VHS tape transfer, and youtube crap lossy compression. Also, ALL youtube videos 360p or bigger use EXACTLY THE SAME AUDIO (heavily compressed lossy MP3 or AAC). AND you imagine that presenting this on youtube means great sound! It's perfectly obvious you have no idea what you're talking about.
(Oh, and of course this is a great performance.)
