ABOUT US: We are Alex and Elaina, a couple in our 20s who are currently living on the 3-acre farm in southern Pennsylvania where Alex grew up. I have really enjoyed watching your build. Make sure you put extra sealant on the vent boots. I believe the were put on improperly and should have been installed as a diamond pointing to the ridge to aid in shedding water.
Thanks for the tip, I wouldn't necessarily say it's a requirement but certainly wouldn't hurt to have the points up. Never thought about it honestly

Wow those guys did not work to building safety codes at all. I do metal roofing and would not install a 2 story roof without full scaffolding. They really should be tied on as well with those pitches. Great look tho. Love the dormers. I’ve done a lot of textured steel. It helps with hiding small scratches and with grip while working with it.
Thanks! They were certainly fearless. It was a Mennonite crew and they're used to doing some crazy stuff at heights.
Looks great, amazing how efficient the installer’s are. You’re surprised anybody would want a white roof? I’m surprised anybody would want a black roof. Popular yeah, but have you read up on the environmental heat sinks that asphalt roads and roofs are to the climate? Oh well, it matches the houses in the neighborhood.
Shingle rooves maybe, but the pigments in this paint make it quite reflective and emissive even for the color black.
A Great roof , you could run black pex on it for heating your water & pool ! In the summer , well done

Upgrading the asphalt shingle roof on my house is a longer term bucket list project...this was very informative. Also, I'm I the only one surprised that the roofers don't wear really good protective clothing to prevent cuts from the sharp metal edges on their arms, or at the very least a good pair of gloves...?
The metal is definitely sharp, these guys were just used to working around it!

"Blessing and a curse" ?? Hmm.. - I too have an engineering background. We need to know every nuance. I find in todays world that I need to know/understand everything before I make a move (hire someone). I am building my last home (69 yrs young). I am thinking of hardie board so I needed to learn how to install it so that I know what I am getting when I receive a quote and hire an installer.. My better half doesn't understand my .. "I NEED TO KNOW"! I side on curse. Any reason you didn't 45 deg the 1x's to move and have a more direct way of moving heat and moisture? Does it create a screwing issue? Have you figured out the price per sq ft? Inc install?
How come you didn’t add solar to the roof?
Not in the budget currently but did add conduit from attic to utility room for the future

its sually not, about 2-3x more expensive.

We call it a "garage apartment" lol there's a garage on the bottom and apartment living space up top!

i would NEVER put a metal roof on my house. i saw a house burn totaly because the firemen couldn't take out tiles to spray water....... imagen you are in the house. the heat stay UNDER the metal roof, wwith tiles it gets trough the roof and doesn't get so hot.......1000°C under a closed metal roof......
On the other hand, a metal roof offers much more protection from bushfires, or from the burning house next door.
