      It is different for a regular country vs being the "world police".
      Without a "big bro" maintaining order, every country is scared of their neighbor and will increase military spending. Increase military spending scares neighboring countries so these countries ALSO increase military spending. Then in order to feed the military (and not a lot of money put in the economy), the country has to use them. So war begins.
      US being extremely overpowered and will intervene if there are conflicts lets other countries feel safer to resolve things by negotiation, focusing on the economy, instead of pumping money into military. Putting military assets abroad is just another method of ensuring US has the ability to quickly help if things turn south in a place that is far away from US mainland.

    In the future, Taiwan will likely lose air superiority simply by relying mostly on conventional fighters and other aircraft. That is why it is very important for Taiwan to focus more on layered ground-based air defense systems for a prolonged air denial. Plus when it comes to the ROC navy, it would be better to focus on submerged platforms (standard diesel-electric submarines, midget submarines, and UUVs, naval mines) and mobile land-based anti-ship missile systems.

    • @russli-lv2yc
      @russli-lv2yc Рік тому +91

      china already has dominating air superiority over roc, as well as navel superiority. No amount of grounded based air defenses can survive. China has long range radiation homing missiles fired from J16, stealth J20, H6 bombers, by land from rocket launchers, and from sea by 052D, 055 destroyers. One of the exercises J16 pilots trains for is taking out ground based radars and SAMs using low altitude approach with radiation homing weapons. And US could move their entire military to taiwan and it still won't save it. taiwan is just too close, too enclosed in China's entire A2D and multi-domain capabilities. If J16 can't deliver that anti-radiation weapon, maybe h6 can deliver it from 400km away, or maybe 300km ranged land based GPS and radiation guided rockets can, or maybe submarines with cruise missiles can, maybe destroyers can, maybe j20 on low altitude high speed run can. Maybe drones, stealth UAVs can. China has so many options that can accomplish the task with really high probability of survival. Its a war of attrition for taiwan and it will lose.

      It is truly indeed that China has the upper hand in many ways but as long as Taiwan's defense strategy focuses on porcupine and asymmetric strategy, it can deter and repel enemy aggressive actions, and the enemy may suffer heavy losses. Always remember that no admiral in nation's navy will dare to conduct amphibious operations unless the area of operation is cleared.
      For example, Taiwan may choose to develop and acquire a few diesel electric submarines, dozens of midget submarines, dozens UUVs, land-based anti-ship missiles, thousands of aerial-kamikaze drones, thousands of naval mines and landmines, thousands of ATGMs and MANPADs, few hundred of mobile artilleries (Howitzers, Mortars, MLRS), thousands of decoys and etc. Simply most of the mentioned platforms are affordable for Taiwan's Economy and not that expensive except for the standard diesel-electric submarines.

    If taking a small island defended by starved soldiers with antiquated equipment can inflict high losses on an experienced invasion force... Good luck to China who has no amphibious operation experience trying to invade a massive island that has had decades to prepare, filled with millions of people ready to defend their home and armed with modern military equipment.

    Kevin Rudd (former AU PM) put it best when estimating China's timeline for Taiwan.
    1. China would need to first insulate itself sufficiently from the damage of the global financial system (sanctions). This would include securing energy, food, and other commodities in RMB. Since Rudd first said this, we have seen them making strides in doing this with unilateral trade deals with Brazil, African countries, Arab nations, and more.
    2. China would need to build up it's military to the point that they point that they are sure they would win.
    They are working towards both of these goals but they have a long way to go and will need many years if it is to be achieved. Will they attack Taiwan? - That is probably the goal. Is it a sure bet and will it be soon? - Probably not

      All of China's preparations will not change the cold hard facts that China imports most of its food, oil/gas and coal/steel and needs to export to survive. All of the major shipping lanes are patrolled by the US Navy, oil from the gulf needs to get past the US Navy stationed there, then through the Straits of Malacca. A complete embargo would cause massive famine and economic collapse, not a good place to be for the CPC. There is nothing to be gained for China by turning Taiwan into a wasteland where most of its educated population would flee. That said, all one has to look at is Russia to see what delusional and paranoid dictatorships can stumble into.

    Isn't that something the US does all the time? We are always upgrading military infrastructure, weapons systems etc. I expect China to arm up simply because of the horrific treatment it has received from Britain and the US. It wasn't long ago that Britain was addicting China to opium by force. US stood by and didn't say a thing. Karma does happen and now we have asked China to restrict sending fentanyl making materials to the Cartel. It wasn't until China was under Mao Tse Tung that it became strong enough to ward off the Brits. That was when Taiwan was taken away from China illegaly. Not that the US is very good at complying with International law. Perhaps if the USA was not beligerant, China would not have to arm itself such. Like Israel, China has the right to defend itself.
    The real threat to the US is the US itself. 20 years ago I learned that China has around 700k students in universities all over the world, the US has around 70k, Mexico has 65K. I'm sure this has not changed. China is playing the long game. It's taken our government around 20 years to figure this out. Better make our colleges and universities free because the 'no college' philosophy championed by Republicans will cede our lead. Our response of course is to be beligerent, Claim that China has stolen our technology, this considering that US Corporations moved manufacturing (our jobs) to China, we somehow blame China for that. Last year China led the world in patents awarded. I'm sure we're stealing Chinese technology.
    The PAX Americana has been challenged. No one, no country can edict truth. China has raised hundreds of millions of its citizens out of poverty. Can that be said about the US? The writing is on the wall.

      You make great points, but you forget something. It has never been just the US, it has been the US and its allies.
      Another thing you must understand is that we're moving into a deglobalization world. Which mean 2 things for China, one is their cheap consumer products for the rest of the world economy will cease to exist, cause there is no more demand, and 2, their demographics, the famous one child policy, will finally start to become a huge problem. So even though they have a short window where the numbers add up to their favor, what has risen can fall again. Those millions out of poverty, can go back into poverty.

The USA bumps up military 5% a year or more. China bumps up their military spending 20-30 percent per year. If this was over 10 years, installing more runway space is literally only to be expected. The rational take is not explained here. WSJ could be ignoring the rational take on purpose to basically prepare you for the USA's 5th ongoing war. China has a history of 5,000 years of military struggle and has accumulated rich combat experience. Since the founding of New China, it has never lost a foreign war, including the Korean War between 1vs17 countries. For the first time in history, the United States was forced to sign an armistice agreement. They cited The proud First Division of the Army was completely wiped out, and MacArthur's promise to return before Christmas was in vain; in fact, China has never actively invaded other countries or interfered in other countries' internal affairs, and the United States has never fought against a country of equal strength. A total war (including the Korean War, because at that time the People's Republic of China had just been founded one year ago and its equipment was 50 years behind the times. It relied entirely on perseverance, faith and excellent physical fitness to win), and the United States has hardly stopped for a few years since its founding. Through foreign wars, because this is their source of obtaining and plundering resources, and it is also an important way to divert domestic conflicts. This is typical hegemonism. He will never understand the idea of a "community with a shared future for mankind" proposed by China!

      UA-cam is not even legal in China, just like most of Google apps, Facebook, etc.; you have to use a VPN to bypass the Chinese ban to these Western media. Instead, people in China watch what's approved and controled by the Chinese government, so people in China only get information that is favorable to the Chinese government.

    • @CrocdileLee
      @CrocdileLee Рік тому +1

      In terms of military news, China basically uses footage released by US/western media, for example, US-Thailand Military Drill co-op. China also reports US technology like nVidia graphic cards, Boston Dynamics robots. Well, we also watch videos about homeless, drug misuse, gunshots in some US cities and some mass media influencers would show us police car chasing and street girls (sex workers maybe) in USA. They (Chinese) either live in USA or upload UA-cam videos to Chinese media platforms.

    Last time I checked, Taiwan was, and still is not part of the United Nations, which America chartered. KMT and CPC never signed any peace agreement, and technically, we are still at civil war.
    I did not know the South (the Confederacy) was ever independent and was considered a nation because it never was!
    The concept of rule-based orders should be confronted with the original and lawful framework proposed by the United Nations: international law-based orders!
    An international law-based order (as proposed by the United Nations) is more important than 'made-up' rule-based orders, which have NO legal grounds.

    No logic exists for separation of Taiwan from mainland China. Till 1894 it was part of Imperial China. Then it had to be ceded to Japan because of China's defeat in Sino-Japanese war and continued like that for next 50 yrs. In 1945 Japan was defeated in WWII and Taiwan reverted to China under rule of Chiang Kai Shek. Thus the pre 1894 status was restored. In 1949 Chiang himself was defeated by Communist forces and found recluse in Taiwan. This was a purely civil war therefore the legal status can not be changed by who occupies which part of the parent country. It is a matter to be settled by peace treaty or by war which will be deemed as continuation of the Civil War. No scope for any foreign interference exists. But the US and Western media have created the fiction of Taiwan's right to self determination and demand permanent renunciation of right to use force by China. These people can make an elephant out of a donkey.
