- For the first time in history, American F-35 Joint Strike Fighters had at least one close encounter with China’s 5th-generation J-20 over the Pacific, and the response from Air Force officials has been somewhat mixed.
While the commander of Pacific Air Forces described the Chinese fighter itself as “nothing to lose sleep over,” he qualified his dismissive statements with positive observations about how Chinese forces are operating their first stealth aircraft.

@@Wise101 I heard some military experts kind of laughing at China during some joint military excerise/competition since the Chinese had bragged about sending their best and were obviously trying really hard. They were laughing since people rarely sent their best since they didn't want everyone to know the best they could do and saying you sent your best backfires if you do poorly since that's "the best you can do"

The USAF wants to retire the F-22 Raptor beginning around 2030 mainly due to two reasons: the F-22’s high operating costs, and the F-22’s obsolescence in a number of areas, with the latter being the primary reason.

I remember reading long ago, and have yet to hear it confirmed, that the F-22 has thrust vectoring to help it maneuver not in dogfights, but at very high altitudes where the conventional control surfaces can't bite enough air. This is why the F-23 team contended it didn't need thrust vectoring - its enormous full-slab tailerons were big enough to move its ass around even in the very high-altitude atmosphere. The F-22's conventional control surfaces can't.
That makes MUCH more sense since high altitude flight is important while dogfighting simply hasn't been important for a long time. It was rapidly becoming outdated when jets first became common and since stealth technology entered the game it became a secondary concern at best
That's not quite correct but it's not necessarily wrong. The f22 is said to maneuver extremely well without TVC. It's nose authority on its pitch axis is unparalleled. the twin horizontal tail stabs(stabilizers & elevator ) design use the entire surface to pich and roll. There authority is much greater then expected. More then adequate at very high altitudes While supersonic. However at lower air speeds the ability to pitch is decreased. While at the same time lower altitudes bleed alot of energy off to gain nose position/AOA. So TVC on that axis is essential for low speed maneuvering, and control/recovery- authority in a stall. It also adds to the balance/ stability, and decreased g loading on wings no matter the center of gravity or direction of lift vectors while maneuvering. According to Paul metz the f22 still couldn't do everything the yf23 could . Nice interview with him as he is the only person to fly both yf22 yf 23 and the final f22 design.
Sadly the f23 wasn't chosen as its pretty much what the air force wants in the Gen 6 . 23 had far superior range larger payload bays and better stealth
The main reason the F23 was not chosen was the manufacturer.
It had a history of delays and cost over runs at the time and had left a bad taste with the powers that be.

So far, Japan has agreed to buy 157 F-35s, with 42 of them being VTOL F-35Bs for operation off helicopter carriers. I recently met a couple Japanese pilots who are going to start training on the F-35A variant this year, since Japan is slated to receive more by then, or so they said...

F-35B is the most powerful VTOL jet ever made, it has no problem taking off that way.
Something not given enough attention is the F-35's big draw and advantage over any other aircraft; its ability to become a mobile Control and Command center for any aircraft its flying with. The F-35 has the most powerful tracking and radar systems anyone has ever seen on an aircraft. It can provide real-time information to an entire fleet of aircraft while remaining out of sight and undetected, and it can link to, and take control of those aircrafts weapon systems simultaneously and use them as it's own.
Pair the F-35 with a Squadron of F-22's, F-15EX's and some F/A-18's, and you have unstoppable, unbeatable airpower.
Why not just build a big ass AWACS with an even more powerful radar?
It's not like an F35's radar or command centre (ie one guy) is enough to beat an AWACS that does the same thing while sitting in much further owning to how much more powerful an AWACs radar could be

@@BOZ_11 We'll if you have more than one F35 than you have multiple AWACS that can communicate with fighter escorts. The point is making a nearly impossible to target, fast, and stealthy AWACS with better EW capabilities than anything else our enemies fly is more than enough advantage.

That was a highly informative video. Especially the numbers of stealth aircraft flying worldwide helped greatly to put things into perspective.
Not to forget, that Lockheed has perfected low observable stealth capabilities. No other country in the world has the radar cross sectional defeating characteristics that we do. Lockheed makes stealth missiles as well. Just because it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, doesn't mean it is. Not to mention that part of our adversaries' key tools in fighting our capabilities is to claim they are more capable than they really are. Just saying.

Could we get a video on the two Helicopter replacement programs next?
The armed scout and medium lift choppers (FARA and FLRAA) will be massive programs worth exploring here.
Sikorsky has the S-97 Raider compete with the Bell+Textron 360 Invictus in the AAS / FARA (armed scout) program.
Meanwhile, the Sikorsky+Boeing SB-1 Defiant competes with the Bell+Lockheed V280 Valor for the FVL / FLRAA (long-range lift) program.
Given how the US defense industry works, it is likely that both companies get one contract each, to keep every factory running, everybody employed.
So if you like both Sikorsky or both Bell designs, get ready for a disappointment.
The Raider has troop capacity while the Invictus does not, but that gives the Invictus better stealth properties, just like the Boeing-Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche had. Not sure why they abandoned that design. Just to push a common scout and transport design when they know it's not very likely they'll get both contracts?
The V280 seems to be the more mature design, faster and longer range. But the SB-1 might offer better handling and safety, as it is not a tilt rotor. And it's smaller, closer to the Blackhawk size. This might really go both ways.

@@texasranger24 When the program got expanded, my first thought was that they're going to adopt 2 designs: the coax for the scout & attack helicopter, maybe as the medium utility. The tilt rotor gets used for the bigger, heavier choppers.

If you really study the history of Chinese Warplane development, you could trace back the aerodynamic design to J9, which was developed in the 70s, earlier than MIG1.44 (2000s),and the designer of J20, Yang Wei, is the student of the Designer of J9 and J10, he inherited the design philosophy

Fascinating video for a layman like myself. Ive been an airplane lover since i was a kid in the 70s. Watching the red arrows, battle of Britain flight or for several decades seeing the RAF Harrier force fly from Wittering. Seeing them come into land over the A1 barely a few metres above you was a rush even as i got older. These days i dont see so many since Wittering,Alconbury and such were shut down. Duxford museum is 45 mins away and seeing an F15 and SR71 there is truly a joy but to see an A10 and that gun was frightening and a highlight of my life to get so close.
I may not get down there these days due to disability but your videos keep me going thank you

If you remember correctly, the F-4 did not come with a "gun" as it was presumed that missiles would make guns obsolete. Well the F-4E was designed and built with guns for "Dog Fighting". The F-14/15/16/18/22/35 all have guns as well.
I am a retired US Air Force electronic warfare officer. One thing in your otherwise good presentation is you seem to repeat the common mistake that radar cross-section is one number. Don’t feel bad, a lot of fighter pilots think this also.
Radar cross-section varies with the wavelength of the radar illuminating the target! The classic example is how Serbs shut down an F 117 and damage others after detecting them with the almost World War II vintage P18/Spoonrest VHF radar.
It turns out that the longer the wavelength or lower the frequency of a radar, radar absorbent material ceases to effectively absorb radar energy. It is absolutely ridiculous to say an airplane has this RCS unless you also state at what frequency the RCS is measured.
This is why the current trend in radars is to have gigantic VHF or UHF antennas, such as the Chinese KLJ-7A. These high-power, long wavelength, radars, or what you need to detect low observable aircraft in time to counter them.

I would say this video is one of the best organized and well thought out comparisons I have seen outside of the Military. I would say that there is one very important topic that would determine strength and might of any air force. Supply lines Fully Mission Capable (FMC) Rates and skills of the actual mechanics, and finally, availability of those maintainers. I spent 16 years supporting fighter aircraft ground support, I was Engine, Hydraulic and Airframe certified on the F-4 and F-16. We would benefit from a video that discussed the hours of training the pilots of important countries got and the ability to keep the aircraft fluing.
Absolutely! Pilots get the glory, but where would they be without the workhorse ground support? That's right, all dressed up with nowhere to go! My nephew was Air Force fighter aircraft ground support and later an expert drone pilot. He is now a top FAA certified civilian drone pilot called upon by first responders to assist in search and rescue and other types of civilian emergency missions.
I was a C-130 Crew Chief from 1999-2009. Civilians have no clue about mission capable rates.
I know this was from quite a while a go but thank you for your service. My father-in-law worked on F-14s, some part of the electronics in the cockpits I think, for the Navy on the USS Nimitz and I was always fascinated by his stories.
He probably did not work in F-16s in teh Navy. Maybe the F-18? The Navy only had a few F-16s to fly against their aircraft and certainly they did nto fly off of a carrier. BUt, if he worked on any fighter, he had a hard job and should be commended for it.@@visionhawk4403

The RAAF now has over 50 F-35s delivered and operational, making it the third largest operator of the F-35 at the moment.
They cannot make their own 5th Generation Fighter? Each country should use their own weapons else they will remain underdogs forever.

Working together and combining expertise is how you get the JSF F35 Program.
The F-35's more recent RAM coatings have lowered its RCS to be competitive with the F-22. The earlier figure of an RCS of 0.005m2, was based on pre-production aircraft with previous generations of RAM. The initial production aircraft had an RCS of 0.0015m2, and later RAM formulations have dropped this further. A ceramic RAM formulation is in testing, that should lessen speed restrictions and maintenance costs.
The stealth tech of F-22 is ancient. There will be whole families of metamaterials that are customized for specific applications. I wouldn't be surprised if new generations of metamaterials become programmable and can change not just the RCS value but the radar signature of the aircraft on the fly so that one type of aircraft can spoof another type of aircraft on radar.

When you talking about radar cross-section it would be nice for you to explain what exactly that is like is it head-on cross section or is it from any particular angle or how did they determine radar cross-section size?

Very informative and I enjoyed watching. I do find it interesting in the fact you briefly covered the one of the J-20 missile systems, but no mention of the possible missile systems for the F-35. But to be fair it might be a subject you've already covered, I will have to check. But again, great/concise content!!
informative? this guy is claiming j20 is a copy of F22 or mig 1.44 when j20 feature leveled delta+canard+ fairing with all mvoeable rear stabilizer and side DSI inlets.
meanwhile f22/f35 adopted conventional swept wing aero. mig 1.44 adopted bottom inlet + canard that's placed higher to cushion the destabilizing trait. not to mention the overall geometry is nothing similar.

The F35 has the advantage as the J20 don't have to be infront of the F35 for the F35 to be able to shoot it down. The J20 can be behind the F35 even and the F35 will get a lock on it. The J20 has more manoeuvrability and has a faster climb rate but will only save its ass against 4.5 generation aircraft as 4.5 generation aircraft nose has to be virtually on the J20 to get a lock on it to be able to shoot it down

I thought the point of these aircraft were that they would never get in close with any other aircraft. But it seems the first casualty of high tech combat is high tech combat. Though it is going to be pretty interesting for both countries to analyze each others rcs.
The best analysis I've seen was an australian team whuch ran a detailed 3D model of a J-20 with old fashioned ferrite RAM in an EM simulation and calculated 8 ghz returns from every direction. They predicted about 0.2 m^2 head on, but a much lower 0.001-0.0025 m^2 a few degrees off the nose in any direction.
How close can EM simulations be of a stealth fighter from China to actual performance? We can't know can we?

The primary role of the J-20s role would almost certainly be to attack Taiwan and destroy it's air force prior to an invasion. If the US were to directly engage China (which I do not believe it will do other than perhaps 5 battalions of Marines placed on Taiwan to help with the actual defense of the island), the J-20 would be used as an interceptor. The current radars on the Chinese destroyers can easily detect the F35 at great ranges, and while they may not be able to lock on them, they can track and feed that info to the mainland, which can deploy the J-20 on side intercept vectors, where the F-35 is most visible to the J-20 and the J-20 is the least visible to the F-35. It is unlikely that the US will fire on any Chinese warship in the open South China sea because that could easily start a nuclear escalation. With a population of over 1 billion, the Chinese are not really all that concerned about losing 5 million men because they have 115 men for every 100 women.

I learned more about thrust vector then i did about the China America face off.
I had this argument with the SR71 and how it wasn't a stealth plane. Everyone argues it was intended to be but it never was. They're argument was cross section detection. The real answer to cross section as stealth is that it isn't by itself. It just reduces WHEN you're detectable or identifiable. You still have jamming tech, radar absorbing materials, and mixed with how surfaces reflect the radar radiation. You can't use the cross section alone for stealth.

The coatings we have the SR 71 did not have it would have ablated off. The black color was something not for radar but for heat to radiate away. For some reason the fiction of an SR 71 is odd in other areas too like when it really retired
They did intend it to be, but changed early in development. If we can't hide from them, then we'll just go so fast that they can't hit us. I have this from the head of coatings for skunkworks at the time.

A couple of months ago, I heard a couple of Australia's F35's flying around an RAAF base, and I thought they were very loud, mind you I have been under a Mirage III O strike line and that too was loud, as it exited the strike area, so a sound traking missile would with the nessicary legs chase them down easy, had they survived the strike run!

Australian here, we're scheduled to have 72 F-35s operational by 2023. Likely a similar story with other F-35 countries, bit of a waiting list...
Yeah, unfortunately everyone is on that waiting list, to include the U.S. military. Lockheed still has the F-35 in LRIP phase but once the F-35 is in full production, those numbers of deliveries will be increasing at a much greater frequency year-to-year.
May I point out that you did not say whether the performance specs you cited for the J-20 were when it's equipped with the original, 33,000-lbs. rated (Russian-sourced, & later their own equivalent) engines, or with the improved, later engines (the ones rated at 44,000-lbs. each). I presume there is a significant performance difference between them! I would also be curious to know what the difference is between them in their ranges, and ceilings, not just their speeds.

@@arnislover They’ve been in development for at least 10-15 years now. Until China can master single crystal turbine blade manufacturing and improve their metallurgy, they’ll remain far behind the West in jet engine tech.
@@arnislover Chinese media reports they are undergoing trials on the J-20. It would be a major advancement if true because it'd mean they overcame the mass production challenges.
Fact is the F-35 saw the J-20 on radar before moving into visual range. The Chinese pilots after seeing them decided to put on a show.
Which was interesting and gave some good data back on the J-20s flight capabilities.

Funny you mentioned the Nighthawk! I remember driving in 1990 up near China Lake, California which is literally in the middle of nowhere! All of a sudden, I saw a ‘flying saucer’ flying above! Of course I later found out it was the Nighthawk which I didn’t even know we had at the time. I figured it was ours since I was between Edwards AFB and China Lake but that thing was sure amazing looking!

I suppose it could be interesting to be that close to the J20 and possibly use your own radar to grab a few detection profiles at different aspect angles. Recording would be helpful. Might be crude but I’m sure the folks building air-to-air simulations might salivate at getting real world data even if it came from processed detections.
There is that story of former US/British fighter pilots being recruited by China to show their pilots how to fly. So that might be a factor in getting them to understand what tactics are being used by our forces. Several years ago I got to see F-22 and P51 mustang fly in formation that was cool to see.

I've heard from the Chinese rumor mill that the J-20s thrust vectoring is less for maneuverability, and more for RCS. Moving those big control surfaces around increases the RCS as they become no longer aligned. It also greatly increases short takeoff performance, which helps if your airbase/runways get bombed.
That's interesting given it doesn't have thrust vectoring.

The thing with J20 is it has smaller front rcs, but the back was actually always a big give away. If I would have to class the J20 I would call it an interceptor.

Years ago, I was out for a little jog at a college campus in northern California. Apropos of nothing at all, I chanced to look up into a perfectly clear sky, and there was that batwing shape above me, misty gray in the hazy blue and completely noiseless from the ground. It was maybe 5000ft up. As I watched, the jet banked so that I was looking at it edge-on, and so help me Jesus, the airplane seemed to disappear in front of my eyes...I know it was an optical effect, and the airplane is very slender when viewed from the side..but still, I got shivers. I sat and stared for a while, waiting for it to reappear, but it didn't...
Heard the Raider is smaller than the Spirit. Wouldn't that be reducing payload as well?

With all this talk of a potentia war one would think the US is rushing to field as many upgrades as possible but it is really unfortunate that they wasted so much time and gave so much tech to China just to have it backfire on us. Then we have spies stealing loads of R&D every single day. Changes are needed to deter the CCP.
It would be handy for taking out the AWACs. But an F22 or F35 could probably do it with an 120-D.
@@dgthe3 you do realize the majority of the us air force is still not stealth aircraft, right? And the navy barely has any yet. And it's the same with china. And even with stealth aircraft, the extra range is very desirable. It saves gas and increases survivability. It's handy for killing everything. Right now if the US Navy fought china, the F-18s would get absolutely destroyed by the longer range missiles. The US is sadly playing catch up with air to air missiles, which never should have been allowed to happen
@@dgthe3 The issue is that many experts believe the PL-15 outranges the 120D. So the 260 would be a good advantage in BVR engagements and yes for AWACS as well.
@@rickjames18 its not believed, its well known. The kinematic performance of the pl 15 is just impressive. That doesnt mean the J20 would have much of a chance against a F-22.
