@@damonke79the reason i say that is because there was no other way to play this game other than the original, and this allows people to finally play it elsewhere, plus due to the nature of paper mario games, the remake will have very little difference to the original (compared to stuff like spyro, crash, and final fantasy 7).
so depending on how the game will work, it may be more preferable to play this over the original any day.

the early 2010s were lightning in a bottle. You had the perfect blend of
    - Gaming finally hit the mainstream and was "cool"
    - UA-cam Channels reviewing/playing old games brought the retro scene to the surface
    - Easy Access to the games cause the market was fully stocked (no stockpiling man-babies yet)
    - Cheap alternatives like Wii Shop/Xbox Live/PSN Store to retro games
    - Emulators/ROM Hacks

Today it's mostly scalpers, resellers and idiots buying from one another. No game is worth hundreds or thousands of dollars, and there is nothing more sad than a sealed videogame that people refuse to open and enjoy.
What's next for the hobby, you ask? To leave it. Most of my collection has been sold off already and these days my time and money is spent actually just playing videogames. Kinda like how we used to, when we were kids, and how we created our wonderful gaming memories in the first place.

I stopped collecting years ago I have around 30 plus consoles but the hobby died when people thought they had gold all the time. Yellowed snes with third party controllers with no games and no box's also third party power plug and they think it's 100 euros. Honestly I've moved on to emulators now.

Ya, I never been a collector. I always just bought what I liked and played it to death long after I beat it 10x over due to getting 1-2 games a year as a kid. This habit kind of stuck with me up until last year. Where I got sick of playing the same game over and over.
I did what any gamer would do seeking out new experiences in gaming outside their comfort genre.
I went out and started collecting.
      In a 3month period
I picked up a total of 79 xbox one & up games
^ mostly in the $5-15 range, a handful of$20-30, and maybe a few $30-60 games
in the past year for the switch
      I've added 49 switch games.

While I agree that the pandemic and competition have definitely changed things when it comes to collecting, I also believe that the biggest change is in you as the collector. As a collector has been on the hunt for several years, they will typically first seek out their most wanted titles, then branch off into other categories of their choosing. Once the collection is built up, some of the "difficulties" of collecting are basically manufactured in our own heads because we have most of what we REALLY want after years of collecting. This makes it seem like things are getting more difficult to find or that it's just "not as fun" anymore. This is when I took a step back from collecting, got rid of some games that I knew I didn't need and would never play, and did some research on certain systems I had never collected for before. I started collecting for the PSP, 3DS, and GBA and I haven't had this much fun since I first started collecting years ago. It's a refreshing look at it and there are so many games that I want and see in stores that are still very reasonably priced. Sometimes, collecting isn't the issue, but the collector is. Not everyone will agree with me, but those are just my thoughts on a very fun topic.

The problem is remembering back to games you played at a friends house, knowing those games used to cost ~$30 on the secondhand market and being reminded of the fact when you see an old GameStop sticker on the front casing price it as much pre-owned when the eBay listing which shows it is asking for $150. It’s those things that make you really think about selling the stuff you no longer want with the current state of prices, so it doesn’t feel like an investment to enjoy the stuff you haven’t been able to in so long since.

Retro game collecting was one of my favorite hobbies before it became no longer affordable. I would love spending a whole Saturday or weekend driving between stores that sold retro video games or at a game convention in the early-mid 2000's to see what they had and hope that I'd find a few things I wanted that I could afford. As the 2010's came, the last games I still wanted to own rose out of my price range and just sticking to modern games, both mainstream and indie, became more affordable. There are still hundreds of classics from NES through to the PS2 that I unfortunately have to accept that I will never own an original copy of.

Same. The hunt was the best part honestly. From about 2015-2019 I was making the weekly or monthly rounds to all of the game shops, pawn shops, etc. but the finds started getting far & few between and I found myself beginning to drop $100s of dollars on just a couple games so it had to stop. I used to collect gaming hardware, but when my daughter was born we really needed the space. I looked at all that stuff and decided to part with it. Sold it all. Made a profit on basically everything, but that wasn't the intention. I feel good about the decision now. I realized that I just enjoyed having the stuff, but never really used it. Also, when thinking of the example I was setting for my children, "collector of unused hardware" wasn't something I was proud of. I didn't want a hoard of material posessions to be what defined me, and I also began playing less video games (partially due to having less time as a new parent).
I still like games, and still play some. I like watching videos about them, but it's no longer THE defining characteristic of my interests.

Declining? No, but the window is closing and the gap of game hunting / finding games in the wild for cheap is closing -- gradually it won't be easy to find games of any sort, or people will become too aware of what prices are. This might be the last year for casual game collecting, finding titles at $1, 2, 3 or even 5.

Corroborating the early 2010s were the peak era to retro video game hunt as they straddled a time before interest exploded and nostalgia hadn't matured for most. I was fortunate to augment my childhood collection with many missed titles in the early 2010s. However, I don't lament the high prices of today rather I celebrate them. Speak as someone that played games from these generations and still has my original consoles and never really stopped buying for them even as new consoles came out, I was pretty much forced to buy a flash cart if I didn't want to emulate because of how much prices were driven up by wealthy people trying to collect retro games for the aesthetic or for reselling rather than an interest in the games. I remember being able to get stuff like the original Star Fox on SNES for maybe $10 from an anime convention vendor and I'm still kicking myself for not buying a Famicom for ~$100 in box from another one.

I actually collect for fun and as a hobby, NeoGeo mvs carts, idc if they are real. or repro's. it makes me happy collecting them and ACTUALLY playing them. I know so many ''collectors'' who don't actually play a single game they collect for. they just put it on the shelves and look at it and that too me is insane. what also woke me up was, okay...I have the game... fine. what about the consoles they are to be played on? backwards compatible anything is becoming few and far between and what are you gonna do when the controllers crap out?(looking at you six axis's ps3 controllers) what about the consoles? you gonna pay 1000 bucks for a decently working old console to play those 1 or 2 games? idk. I just don't have the heart for it anymore. and sealed games are a freaking joke to collect. How do you even know what you're buying is legit? I HAVE KNOWN people who bought ''rare'' ''sealed'' games for very high price, opened it up and it was a NFL disc. boxed graded anything is the perfect scam. you gonna open a product that you THINK is real just to confirm its authenticity? that would defeat the whole purpose of buying sealed and graded in the first place? idk. I started retro game collecting in early 2006, and by 2013 I was getting out of it due to the rising prices. I was hampered by the fact that I was born in 1992 instead of the 1970s or 1980s, but I have great parents who were very supportive of my hobby. If you were looking for pre-2000 games (32/64 bit era and older), the mid-late 2000s was the golden age for collecting. I would go into my local retro game store, Video Games Etc., and come out with 5-7 games for $50 total on assorted consoles from Atari 2600 to N64. Common games for common systems were usually under $15, complete in box, and the rare stuff wasn't that expensive: I got my Atari Jaguar for $70, as well as my 3DO. I got my Atari 5200 for free in '07 because someone at my dad's work had one lying around. Even my Vectrex was $120.
By 2013 typical retro game prices had nearly doubled from where they were in 2006, but they were downright reasonable compared to what they are now as you mentioned. I hope the bubble deflates, because I want to get back into it.

Retro video game Collecting is the Gen X and Gen Y equivalent to Toy Train collecting for the Silent Generation, and Elvis and Beatles collecting for the Boomers, it's all stuff that we grew up with, then we got to the point where we started to have disposable income, and thus there are/were those of us staring down the barrel of middle age burnout and want to relive our childhoods and due to having disposable income there are/were people willing to spend top dollar on some items, and due to this the prices WILL NOT go back down until the generations age out as we all have to be able to fund our retirements, it happened with the Toy Trains, and is currently happening with all of the Elvis and Beatles crap.

I have some thoughts about retro collecting. I remember I got the Atari 2600 in the closet. So, I just like what is this? The old-school video game console? So, I played a few Atari games. I enjoyed Berzerk and Pitfall. I also remember I had the N64, GameCube, and Nintendo Wii. I got them from my brothers. I went to a retro game store. It was a cool place. They got the CRT TV, retro games, and Nintendo Power. I checked the price. They were a little bit cheap or expensive. Some retro video games are rare. I went to another store. They had a good deal. The retro games were very cheap.

I feel like with old games, you might as well emulate them. As long as you have a gaming pc good enough to run most old games on. With that you could just down a load of old games for free. Obviously you’re losing out on authenticity, that nostalgic feeling of physically owning an old console and an old game like you did way back then, providing you have a high end CRT Tv to perfectly capture the way old games was intended to play.
But if you don’t care about any of that, and want a nice 60fps with extremely sharp looking polygons, then downloading the rom is all the way. If no other gaming company is going to provide every vintage game imaginable, create that infrastructure yourself I’d say. Fuck em.

They more cheaper and sure Japanese games are in a different language but most of the games that I am interested in was Platforming or games I played before. I currently have a Japanese GameCube Modded with the PicoBoot Modchip (I am still collecting games for it but mainly games I like), A Japanese Sega Saturn with a Pseudo Cart that allows me to play burned CDs (Same thing with the GameCube) I only have Two games which is Sonic Jam and Virtua Fighter and a Sega Dreamcast that I am planning to mod with the DreamPSU to use in 220v instead of using a Voltage Switcher. I might be planning to get a European PS2 or a Japanese N64 but if I get a N64 I might have to mod it to play European or American games but American Games are so pricey. Tho I am currently happy with the European and Japanese Games but I do have some American Consoles like Wii U and Xbox 360. I am still buying for them and the Games are so cheap.

As a old collector it was a fun hobby but I felt it was already changing towards the end of me collecting. I grew up on nes, snes and n64 and mainly stuck with Nintendo I also suscribed to nintendo power with a break inbetween but I remember they had some offer like the first 50 issues of nintendo power that I ended up getting. It really did start off on a whime I was at the flea market and nes carts were everywhere and one day just decided to buy some classics like 3 for $5 and from there I was like i'm going to try and collect them all having no idea how many there were. So I sarted late 90's I discovered funcoland before it became gamestop and there were lots of options to find games, flea market, video stores always sold old games blockbuster and hollywood video and ebay was kinda new or collecting vintage games was not huge becuase the prices were pretty good even online. After a couple years my strategy became buy collection of games with the last few I needed and sold off the rest or replace certain copies. It evolved at first just cared about the cart but started getting boxes and manuels and it was just nes then snes and stopped pretty much at n64. Ended up selling it all i'm good with emulators I did play every game on all three systems was a good hobby but no regrets selling.

The unfortunate truth of modern physical games (at least with Microsoft and Sony, not so much Nintendo but still sometimes) is that they don't even have the full game on the discs.. they only have a portion of the game and the rest has to be downloaded, or if they do have the full game then mandatory updates for the games to even function correctly need to be downloaded.. physical games of the modern age are already pretty damn dead.
But yeah that doesn't mean that all the consoles and games released in the past can't still be loved, played and collected, we just need to get past this huge hump of problems with resellers and whatnot..

Retro game collecting has gone past a tipping point now. I remember being a kid and being able to go to Game Stop and other store's used game section or and grabbing some classics for really great prices. I must've got Mario Galaxy 2 for 20 bucks 10 years ago. Nowadays, when I google Mario Galaxy 2, I can find a listing for the game on Amazon for 73 dollars! (Got a used copy of Samurai Champloo Sidetracked from gamestop, it still has the sticker on it that says it was 6 bucks! I'm seeing ebay listings for it that go from 80 - 240!!! The $240 listing is claiming it's brand new, but yeah right buddy!) And even looking for games not online, the people selling them are usually looking up their games now to see if they're worth anything. This sucks, plain and simple. But I do think people interested in games should be a little more aware of the current situation, rather than only lamenting about the good ol' days.
Retro games are getting really old now. The oldest ps2 games are over 20 years old now and unlike CD's or DVD's, you need specific specialized devices to use them. Combine that with everyday people who grew up with them getting nostalgic for them now and that's driving the prices up. However, you know what's also outdated tech now? PS3 and Xbox 360. PS5 and Xbox series whatever just came out too, so PS4 and Xbox one games are starting to be overlooked now too. The deals might never be as good for quality used games as they once were, but if we were all kids and teens collecting games for older systems just 10 years ago, then we should be aware that there are more older systems and games now. Go find your closest game store and look around if they have any deals on used games. I got nearly the entirety of the Devil May Cry series for 20 bucks because GameStop was having a used game sale when I went in, ("3 used games for 20 bucks") And just the other day they had a 20% off used games sale when I went in the other day. So try to be aware of what current older game deals there are right now, because you might be letting them slip by while we sorrow over Paper Mario being $100 now.

I know it sounds crazy, but the market is about to be as niche as it is collectable. Without the physical game, along with even wal Mart going the digital route, games are abundant and relying only on a memory. That memoy is cool, it's a place of invisible imagination. Physical games, like a scar, are that constant reminder you can rely on knowing it's there no matter the consequences amidst a cloud we can all float upon. If the Internet is like life support for your memories, then pulling the plug leaves you dead inside, no way to gradp what you had and what you've known. The games you can carry with you, like scars, will always be there to remind you that, if all else fails, at least you can rest assured they'll be there when you die, and that memory will last far beyond you.

In my perspective its like this....i recently sold 100 games in my collection because.......they were just sitting on a shelf collecting Dust. I didn't have time to play them. And as time went on. It turns out games that were made 2005 back on a CD or DVD like Disc. They rott. They go Yellow on the silver part of the disc. Some of my ps2 disc were like this. They still played. But its a 50/50 percent chance that it wont work in the next 5years. Also the price of the games are just...not worth payong over $10 for a used game thats over 20years old. Age equals value. I know. But in reality. No one cares about physical games when you can literally emulate them on a phone. And in the end. Im getting older. Whats the point if i die? That was the bigger question i asked. What would happen to my game collection? Will my kids or relatives even care to carry it on? No. Because they don't care about the niche hobbt im into. And thats the key point of video games. Its a fun hobby. And they shouldn't cost a whole house to play something like a sealed copy of Earthbound.
In the end. I just ended up making some money on Ebay. And sold the rest to a local game store. But in reality. I got them all backed up on my PC. So im still happy. And im glad my games went to new people who want to experience the games the way i wanted to. But as time goes it. It will sadly be harder and harder to get your hands on such games.
    Your better off emulating them.

Games have gotten WAYY too expensive now, I can't handle that. Instead I've gone the direction a lot of people don't want to support (or not admit that they do)....softmodding my consoles so I can play pirated games on them. It's not as satisfying as actually owning the disc and playing it, but I have found I prefer playing on actual hardware instead of emulating on a PC, so at least now I can have and play whatever I want without the hassle of overpriced resellers. There's exceptions and things I still want a physical copy of, but for the most part I think I like the idea of having the actual console and it being an all-in-1 machine that can play it's specific library.

Even Gamestop around 2003 ofen had buy one get one gameboy games for 5 bucks or less. I agree collectors have ruined everything for casual gamers and yard sale freaks. Everyone now just goes on line and lists...NES with 10 games 150.00 because they believe they can get that. Here is what i really hate. In 2014 at a yardsale a family had 2 DS lites, 20 each and 3 GBA SP 10 each. I had 20 cash so i bought 2 of the GBA SP...went to the atm...took out money...came back and the other systems were gone that fast. Those days are over. People wont sell anything that cheap now because they all believe their stuff is worth a fortune thanks to super collectors. I tell me friends and family if i drop dead dont dare think my game collection is for good will or a yardsale. Give it all to somebody who will enjoy it and not charge insane prices!

I will pay for all my games on current systems but once you can’t buy that game with out using a reseller then the Roms are the best option cause the maker of the systems and games get nothing from games reselling

I feel like the used games should be cheaper instead in the factory sealed games should go up so could be fair to everybody and especially people who is collecting and selling them who rely on it that's a job since actual jobs are not paying well need four jobs for a college degree to get paid better especially in this economy when people cannot afford rent or move out especially unfar working hours etc

Why not emulate the games? U can get achievements, upscale, play mods, etc, and u can connect ur og controllers to ur pc via an adapter or get 8bitdo controllers

Rom collecting is so much cheaper then use a flash cart or optical drive emulator to play them on original hardware or pop them in a mister fpga and your playing the same games with out the bankruptcy at the end

"I copied youtube, then everyone else copied youtube and it ruined me copying youtube". People wanting to play old games emulate instead of taking up half their house with old game boxes. Almost every collector who isn't a youtube manchild grows out of collecting games because digital preservation is so much more convenient and the experience is almost identical.

The cosmetic damage is just it’s battle scars, mine still works and it’s more convenient for sitting down playing with the family. You can’t emulate a Mario Party 4 -ever night through a pocket portable. The advantage is having grown up on this stuff as to of kept it over the years, you’re only right that the UA-cam manchildren are the ones who buy into the graded sealed stuff to never actually play.

Collecting Great games and hidden Retro Gems is harder now for sure.
I would argue that people who rather have a game thats worth $$$ over a dollar in value.
Just seems people would like to find rare and valuble games for pennies/garage sale prices and think its still worth $$$ can't have it both ways.

    • @ReinMixTape

There are people getting out of the hobby, whether it be to financial issues post pandemic or going into emulation or simply sizing down their collection a bit. I'm personally glad that say people selling at garage sales/etc price their games closer to market value - they deserve to make money of what they've got. I've seen enough videos of flippers going around ripping people off and being proud about it - yuck.
Hidden gems don't even exist anymore really, all these games are catalogued priced and massively reviewed. And what channels on here call hidden gems have been called and reviewed the same by hundreds of other channels.

Not anymore no, he basically came forward and said as he got married and had kid’s..priorities changed. He had faaaar less time to dedicate to channel and needed more rapid content to simply farm views to keep money coming in as it was his job.
Now I respect that and family should come first, but the wife should be more understanding and help more as he is putting food on the table and roof over head.
Pretty much once you get in a real relationship let alone a baby in the home??? Your career aspirations pretty much die as your free time is required to be focused on the other person. Just how it works.

      John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
      Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
      2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
      Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
