Wow that is awesome you learned from online videos, good job btw. We need to teach our young how to fillet walleye(pike) on their own. Your gonna be a good fishermen.
I've watched other ways to fillet a pike but they were all extremely difficult. This makes it quick and easy and I can finally enjoy my fish without getting throat stabbed. Great video.
Hey, tried out your technique the other day - worked like a charm! I’ve always thrown back pike because I couldn’t fillet them properly... never again. Thanks!
My grandfather taught me how to filet a pike many moons ago. Both ways start the same by cutting off the back, but your technique to cut along the Y bones looks more intuitive. I will give this a try. Thanks!
This is the third clean a pike video I've watched and by far the best. Clear and concise but what does it for me is the camera angle. I can actually see what's going on. Thank you

This is my first time with a northern pike and after watching this video about 3 or 4 times (for confidence...the first time was clear as day) my first pike was done very nicely. Awesome awesome video 👍👍
Thanks to this guy, I keep Pike all the time. I just caught several at Lake Saint Clair yesterday. They are delicious. Deep fried, breaded, in peanut oil. Just as good as walleye. I love this method. Boom fish on.
I remember learning this from your first pike filleting video... It's been a great edge to have on other people I fish with! This is definitely a more quality version! Good idea with the soup stock as well.
I ordered two of these based on the reviews. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxqmKabisEv81ul5v7OhvVxxOpt2CJruI- Received them on time and they look good. I really like the handle on these knives as they feel good in my hand. I'm giving them 4 stars on look and feel, but have not had the chance to put them to the test yet. I mostly fish for catfish and can hopefully try them out in the next few days. If they hold an edge throughout a limit of catfish, they'll be worth another star.Update...I used the 9" strong and the 9" fillet on a mess of catfish. I did put a sharpening on these before I started. I want a razor edge to fillet fish but they weren't quite that sharp. The people who gave these knives crappy reviews and said they were sending them back was because they weren't razor sharp. So what, do they not have a knife sharpener?? Good grief! I mean you have to sharpen any knife from time to time.I personally like them and am pleased with them. If you're too lazy to sharpen a knife then hire someone to clean your fish lol.I've never bought a knife in my life that would shave hair right out of the box. Don't be afraid to purchase the knives. They're pretty nice in my opinion.
Caught my first pike yesterday, didn't keep it. Google results said it was good white flaky meat but bony. Now after seeing your video, I will give it try. Thank you for your time in sharing your knowledge 🙏
Thank you - I've always done them trout style - head on or off and then wrap it in tinfoil - throw it on the bbq 10 mins each side medium heat - stuff the belly with veggies and flavour then the skin will slide right off and you can pull out the backbone and the 2 sides with little to no bones.....I will be trying this though !!!! Great work !!
Ivo, I watched countless video's yours is by far the best one and you explain every step very clearly the video quality is tops thank you so much!! I'll never throw a pike back in the water!!

@Corey Stefan i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm trying it out now. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Love this! I live in South Texas where of course, there are no pike but one day I hope to fish for these monsters. They look absolutely delicious. I love how nothing goes to waste! Thank you for this tutorial.
Thanks a lot my dad caught a pike today about claiming it as his monster pike he was so excited to fillet it and eat it but he's never done best to fillet a fish so next time he catches one I'll show him this genius mans video and we'll have a nice pike for dinner :) Thank you sir
I'm fairly experienced with pike myself, and I know for a fact that he just sawed into the spine for the back fillet. The white line running along the middle of the back fillet was all bone. The best way to avoid this is to just cut out a narrow strip in the middle of the back piece. But other than that everything looked good.
The larger the Northern Pike the easier it is to do exactly like he says in the video. My pike was a very thick, well fed, hefty pike. So it was just like he said for me. If it’s a smaller pike maybe different results
I just harvested my second pike. I butchered the first one. We ate it, but it was a mess. Watched this video be for trying again. Went so much better than the first try. Thank you.
This is the method I was taught years ago to fillet pike and it works great. The only recommendation I have is to bleed your fish right when you catch them, I keep a knife on me when fishing and I put the blade under the gill plate and slice downwards and then you get near perfect white fillets everytime. If you've never tried it trust me, they taste quite a bit better.
I've caught my first pike in southwest Nebraska. 44". I released it because I was not sure how to clean it. And why practice on a huge beautiful fish like that. This is a great tutorial. My next pike I will try. Thanks!
Thanks to this video I'm able to keep the odd pike a catch on accident for dinner. They taste great and you made this process extremely easy after the first few times I can do it in under ten minutes. Thanks!
Super helpful video! This was only my second time dealing with pike. The first time I filleted it like a bluegill and ended up pickling it since there was 20 feet of bones in it.. Hardest part of this was skinning the fillets, but I think my knife was a little on the dull side.
Dude, don't skin ur pike. Just scale it. It's quite easy, just take a knife and keep scraping them against the way they are laid down. The skin if pan fried is so crispy and delicious
The best fish I have ever eaten was pike caught fresh from a lake in Wisconsin. It was dredged in seasoned flour; dipped in egg; rolled in cornmeal, and deep fried golden brown. It was amazing. The guy who prepared it, filleted it differently. He hugged the blade against the Y-bones and cut out angled fillets. He did a good job and it resulted in very large, bone free fillets.
Pike is best early in the season. In Canada, that's about from early May to mid July. After that water tends to get warmer in many fresh water lakes. Late summer, the pike tends to be "mushy", not as fresh, not as good. Of course, pike is great if you go ice fishing late Dec, Jan to end of March. The colder the water, the better.
I grew up in NW Ontario and to be honest I love pike, catching and eating. Unfortunately 99% of the anglers here consider them trash fish. I have learned a traditional way to fillet the pike from a friend from Wisconsin but I definitely want to learn the 5 fillet method and using this video I think I can figure it out. Cheers!
Update. I kept a pike on my last camping trip and used this method to fillet the pike. My cousin and I agreed pike taste better than the walleye we kept. That's a high bar to top! Cheers
Thank you internet dad! I just caught my second (I caught my first pike last year but I didn't fillet it) pike and I'm filleting this one myself and I had no clue where to even start! Great video and thank you for the advice!
This technique is awesome! I'm watching this with my girlfriend, and next time when we gonna go for pike fishing we will test this filiting method. Thank you very much for showing, huge thumb up for your video and all our best wishes from Germany, Chris and Mara
Thanks for this video, tried this a couple times and it works great, I still end up with a few small bones, but I guess with a bit more practice and a better knife it will improve. With the remaining meat on the bones, I usually boil it quickly to make it easy to pick off and make fish burgers/frikadellen with it and it turns out great.
Make sure you sharpen your knife before every use and clean it meticulously. Your knife will last for years. Rinse your knife and (plastic) holster with vinegar once in a while to kill Bacteria that may find its way in.
THANK YOU!!! FINALLY!!! A video that actually shows how to properly fillet a pickerel family fish, cause taste wise he is right on its right between walleye and perch, and there is so much meat. It is an apex predator and unless pike or muskie are your favorite fish it undoubtedly preys on you favorite fish, here is a great way to thin the heard and boy are they tasty! This is the go to video I send people to and when it comes to the "5 piece method" they go "oh, now I get it! just like I did. This needs to be better know cause with a few tries, you become an expert! XD
He’s right ! Pike is delicious (if done right). I moved to Manitoba a few years back, really got into pike. We kept a two man limit, had an elder teach us to remove the bones (not as easy as this video). We fed 7 people, simple beer batter and I absolutely loved it! Awesome film, I’ll have to keep the next one !
I worked for these two older Greek guys near Chicago in the 00's. They were famous for cranking out 60 gallons of 2 different soups daily as well as 60 MORE gallons of stock. The one brother would tell me to "aim the security camera at the garbage. Its the biggest theif in the whole place"
Was recommended this video, now 4 years later. :) I have been fishing for pike for over 30 years, but never ate them myself. They have become cat food as the cats love boiled pike, they go crazy. :) Maybe should try it myself, got a little inspired by the video. Now just to find some good recipe. Thanks!
I caught about 50 pike before trying one. They are delicious. Nothing fancy I used flour, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, garlic powder, cayenne and fried them up. Dipped them in some lemon juice and tartar sauce.
Man, you're good with that fillet knife. Can we get a video on how to properly sharpen a fillet knife? I can never get mine sharp enough to get a good cut.
buy a worksharp, they are easy to use and get your knives razor sharp. No Joke! I was able to buy mine used for $20. probably one of the best deals I ever made.
Sometimes it's just not possible. Cheap knives use inferior steel and they either don't sharpen well (perhaps like yours) or don't keep their edge, like mine. I have one of those Rapala fillet knives, like it appears he does, but mine must be a cheap, ChinaMart knockoff - it dulls even cutting through the scales. LOL
Excellent video where i came from we had no trout salmon but plentiful of Northern and perch as well we mostly smoked the pike and the bones would just peel off. All the best and Thank you for a great fillet lesson!
All the years we lived in Alberta, caught many pike, always released them because they were so bony, unpleasant for eating. Wish I new then what I know now.
@@doolck Kyllä se aivan hyvin toimi. Ruodotonta filettä tuli. Isommalla hauella täytynee olla vähän varovainen, ettei leikkaa niitä y-ruotojen päitä tuohon selkäpalaan mukaan. This is an awesome video I saw a video where 2 guys just filleted it like a regular fish and it was full of bones. I have 4 kids who love pike so this is the way to fillet a northern pike. Thanks
What we get at the end - 5 nice paperless piles of letters. *nOtHiNg sHoULd gO To wAsTe* - paper can be a nice base for your book "How to fillet a Pike"
Late comment but...............I've caught hundreds of pike and never tried this method. A friend of mine tried to explain it to me but it was still muddy. Now clear as can be. Didn't know about the hundreds of cheeks I've thrown away. Wow!!! Might catch you on the lower Niagra someday. Thanks Evo.
Yup, if you can get rid of those bones, you have world class fish. But with the bones in all you have is cold fish by the time you get the dang things out. Another option is to can them with a bit of vinegar to dissolve the bones, a good option for the leftovers from the boneless filet process.
*watches this AFTER filleting a Pike. I did pretty good filleting it , not having anything to go on. I usually just gut, de-scale and clean the fish only. Super helpful video
Hey there Ivo,. A few years back I taken a buddy of mine over to Benton Harbor and we did some salmon Charters and head come up with this recipe whereby he made a stock out of salmon carcasses and shook the meat off the bones after I had boiled for a bit and let it cool put them in baggies Frozen took him back home and made some incredible salmon chowder. He used seasonal fresh vegetables. It had corn, summer squash, potatoes, onions, and carrots in a creamy sauce and was just incredible with that fish stock, like you're talking about doing with your Pike carcasses. Waste not, want not! I'll tell you with some garlic toast that salmon chowder was just unbelievably good. I thought it was pretty creative on my buddy's part... it just kind of looked up some recipes and winged it didn't really I have a recipe for it. I tried and tried to talk him out of that recipe, same response I just winged it.
@@biggusdickus9809 I have been doing pike like that for years. The top section always has bones but after cutting it from the fish I follow the bone line, separate the top section lengthwise and all the bones stay together and come out clean. No need for the knife to separate the top section, just slowly pull them apart and you have 2 very tasty clean very boneless fillets. All good eating.
@@rolanddansereau6947 interesting. I catch a lot of pike so I tried filleting one the other day and I butchered it beyond repair lol. I felt bad wasting such a beautiful fish
Hopefully I’ll get to put this to the test tomorrow. I’m ashamed to say I tried to filet a pike today and completely botched it. Had no idea about the y bones.
I wish my dad had seen this video, too. He said that Pike were good to eat, but as a kid I never tasted one because he said they had too many bones and he always threw them back.
sounds like you are going down too far......try not cutting as deep and you will see a difference - meanwhile, if you do go too deep, you can easily remove those bones from the middle by cutting your top filet right in half, leaving the thin bones in the middle :)
Correct... way to deep of cut the poster did. That back piece will be loaded bones! You can hear him cutting throug all of them. No questions! You can't go to the spine. Check any skeletal of a pike...
My hat is off to this patient, ingenious pike harvester, who seems to never miss a beat - smiling all the while.. while explaining this unique butchery in the midst of wind, slime, and newspapers flapping.

Thanks for the suggestion :)
buy a worksharp, they are easy to use and get your knives razor sharp.
LOL
Buy a better knife. Time is money. So figure out what your time is worth in sharpening and frustration time and buy a bubba blade and never look back
Glenn Krzeminski Rapala....makes good lures, not good knives. The old adage applies: Dont eat where you sleep (hotels are not good restaurants).
Been looking for a video that explained if you could get pike cheeks or not. So glad you added that onto the end! Great video
Keep the liver and heart and put them along with the carcass for an even better fish soup!. Thanks for this video, by the way.
I always fry the livers that's the delicacy in the meal
We get quite a lot of pikes here in Finland. Thanks! I'm gonna give this a try!
miten meni?
Lac a parle, minn. Caught big daddys on a daily basis, lake Reno, lake Mary, and the mother load, lake of the woods!!!
If you have a chance go to North south stanchfield pike fillets the size of your forearms
This is an awesome video I saw a video where 2 guys just filleted it like a regular fish and it was full of bones. I have 4 kids who love pike so this is the way to fillet a northern pike. Thanks
How to Fillet a news paper.
LOL.
Lmfao!! Very gold mpalaouros21!
Can see an advert in the paper:" Filleted pike $3,99 a pound" What's the point in filleting?
What we get at the end - 5 nice paperless piles of letters.
*nOtHiNg sHoULd gO To wAsTe* - paper can be a nice base for your book "How to fillet a Pike"
I KNOW THAT EXACT FEELING
Seviche pike eh?? Hmm
Frostyundercarriage I'm unsure of what your saying?
It’s a cooking term. If you leave fish or seafood in seasoned or plain vinegar. The vinegar “cooks” the meat. It tightens it up. And makes edible.
Just always thinking with my stomach.
*watches this AFTER filleting a Pike. I did pretty good filleting it , not having anything to go on. I usually just gut, de-scale and clean the fish only. Super helpful video
Amazing way! Love all your videos dude. That was a sweet pike too
Hey there Ivo,.
This is the best video I've seen in regard to Pike.
He says "boneless" as you can hear him cutting through the bones
@@biggusdickus9809 I have been doing pike like that for years. The top section always has bones but after cutting it from the fish I follow the bone line, separate the top section lengthwise and all the bones stay together and come out clean. No need for the knife to separate the top section, just slowly pull them apart and you have 2 very tasty clean very boneless fillets. All good eating.
@@rolanddansereau6947 interesting. I catch a lot of pike so I tried filleting one the other day and I butchered it beyond repair lol. I felt bad wasting such a beautiful fish
Thank you for this video! It helped me and my dad clean the musky I just caught!!!
Top shelf! Always wanted to see this done. Good job!
Best video I've seen on how to clean Jack Daniel's! Well done!
Hopefully I’ll get to put this to the test tomorrow. I’m ashamed to say I tried to filet a pike today and completely botched it. Had no idea about the y bones.
P l
Not too many people I know like eating pike here in Wisconsin but it's such a good eating fish in my opinion so underrated
Good job, you made it look pretty easy and I agree, nothing better than fresh pike ( jack fish)
I caught my first northern pike today and I'm excited to cook it up! Thanks for the tutorial! Mine is smaller, but I'm gonna do it like this anyway.
That's great 👍 Small ones fillet the exact same way🎣🎣
Simply amazing! Good show. I believe the ones talking shit have never caught a northern pike so that’s their response.
Just got done watching and used this method seemed to work great mine was 36 inches long 9.80 lbs 5 boneless filets
wow wow I wish my dad was alive to see this video and I say we're pretty good fisherman but wow
I wish my dad had seen this video, too. He said that Pike were good to eat, but as a kid I never tasted one because he said they had too many bones and he always threw them back.
The very best video that I have seen in dealing with this fish.
I think it's delicious.
When I do that, the first piece off the back isn't boneless, there's always some right down the middle.
sounds like you are going down too far......try not cutting as deep and you will see a difference - meanwhile, if you do go too deep, you can easily remove those bones from the middle by cutting your top filet right in half, leaving the thin bones in the middle :)
Correct... way to deep of cut the poster did. That back piece will be loaded bones! You can hear him cutting throug all of them. No questions! You can't go to the spine. Check any skeletal of a pike...
That was the best pike filling video I’ve seen so far great work.
Thanks 👍
glad you enjoyed it and good luck on the water :)
Thank you, all the best.
Am not making filet in near future but u never know, right.
Awesome Video and thanks
Thank you so much, I always come back to this video and it never disappoints!
