This is one of the best live covers I’ve ever seen of Roygbiv. You not only nailed every single part, but it was so satisfying seeing everything played live in one take. Truly inspiring stuff!
Hey thanks man! You’ve done some great covers yourself. Ive thought about doing some like yours where I can just film the parts separate and then edit the video later but frankly my laptop sucks and can’t handle editing video so it’s easier for me to try to do one live take haha. You got any new BOC covers in the works?
benoblest You’re welcome! And thanks for the compliment! Honestly, I filmed those videos on a painfully slow MacBook that could barely pass for editing, so I understand completely. I’d been on hiatus the last two years, but just got back into UA-cam again, so I’m still debating what cover I’m doing next. But I’m working one into my schedule for next month. 👍
Ian Felpel yeah I totally understand that. Even simply adding the one synced audio track to the video is painful for me. Might be time for a new laptop. Sweet I’ll be looking forward to it!
You probably dont give a shit but does anyone know a tool to get back into an Instagram account? I stupidly forgot the account password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
Best cover version ive seen on here tonight. Its the keyboard sound with three notes at 0:39 that is authentic compared to others trying it. They get it wrong.
This is sick brother! I'll join in with the others and tell you you did a phenomenal phenomenal job here!!! Thank you for taking the time and patience it must have talked to get this just right! Takes me back real quick to the best part of the late seventies and into the 80s... Especially for vidiot-savants like me who was all about 8-bit, Atari, Science International and more! Bravo!!!
God this was so amazing ...... I got into electronica actually by a fluke I guess. It was over the internet via IRC / Efnet in the very early 90's in a channel called #snes ... just a handful of kids trading SNES roms from all over the world. One guy named Yoshi had an ISDN internet connection and back then, this was super fast and he used some app to stream "The Prodigy" and other pieces of types of different music I had never heard before and this is when I learned about "electronica" and "drum and bass" .. "gabber" and "ambient" etc. Over the years, I've steadily grown to love electronica more and more and in fact, an absence from my life would be almost like the loss of an arm or leg or even a loved one. Boards of Canada has always been music that took my on these fantastic soothing journeys into random thoughts into whatever direction my mind took me. Thank you and Boards of Canada. P.S. No, seriously ..... thank you. I hope you are still doing these covers and I am going to look now and see if you have original pieces of music yourself.
Thanks for sharing your story with electronic music and finding BOC, and I appreciate the kind words! I have a bunch of other BOC cover/recreations done, just need to get around to filming live takes! Also have original music which will hopefully be out in the not too distant future
Had to make a 2nd comment just because I really really enjoy your cover. I have very high-end headphones, for me at least. AKG's I paid $350 for and I know that you can spend a lot more. With those, I'm using a USB-C Audio DAC. This cover with my headphones and the DAC just nearly take my breath away.
this is amazing man, well done! Sounds so nice and similar to actual track and playing it live . even got the (Yeah/haey) voice for extra points which I hear as ‘late’ :)
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. The original sample of the kids voice is actually saying “Lake”, so you were very close. It’s from a Sesame Street episode.
Fantastic! I suspect they used the SH-101 for the bass and the Arp for the lead sound, they only way I got close. I think the "shaker" sound is some vinyl pops and clicks.
Thanks! Yup I agree. It’s probably an SH101 for the main synths. And then the an1x or something similar for the layered bell type lead at the end and also the short melody at 00:50. For me that one synth was the hardest to get close even though it sounds super simple. Also ya I just used some field recordings/noise/crackle for that shaker type sound.
@@Psilocy-ben Hi Ben. You did such a great job. Brought back many memories. What synth did you end up using to get the lead sound at 00.50? Sounds pretty spot on :)
@@bartelsmore6285 thanks! I couldn’t get my other synths sounding close but I remembered hearing they may use a Yamaha an1x. I discovered that Yamaha has a free app called synth book, and there was a patch on it based after the an1x. I imported that waveform into a sampler in Ableton and got close. Here’s a video of my project file I made after this video, it’s a lot more accurate than this version. ua-cam.com/video/86ETKgISGVI/v-deo.html
@@Psilocy-ben Thanks for the reply. I’ll take a look now. After seeing the reply below about the Yamaha app I did some research and was able to use it as an external instrument through logic. Just plugged the phone into my laptop and midi and audio streamed perfectly :) I used to own a CS1X in the 90’s and the sounds were pretty bland, but the AN1X looks much more interesting.

Simon George Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. Yeah it took me a little while til I got that sound close enough.
I thought the same thing when watching the first time. It’s really the key to all this.
Its good but those notes to my ear anyway arnt quite there wi this cover. There is a fourth higher note being missed.
Absolutely nailed that bass synth sound, nice
Je ne me lasse pas de vous regarder jouer ce chef d'oeuvre 🤗
Roygbiv is crack. A perfect song to be exact
I come back here 2 years since my last comment. Still love it!! Well done🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
You captured the Boards of Canada feel perfectly, and that bass synth is spot on. Well done!
Best cover ive seen of this, respect to the maximum !!!
Love this track for 20 years. Nice to see how it's done.
Wow, you've got a great ear for analysing and fine tuning sounds until they are perfect. I think this is THE definative cover of this song!
Clean as linens
Damn I wish we were friends.
Holy shit that bass line is spot on. That is insane
This has to be the absolute best cover I've heard, and I've watched a LOT of these. Really well done man!
Did you sample the boy saying "lake" from the song, for from the sesame street episode it's from?
Nice job doing this in one take. The sounds you made for this cover are near perfect too. Nice work :)
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
This is so great! Sound and playing are the best of seen in a BOC cover. Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely amazing, you can tell how much you understand the original. Fantastic stuff!
Wow. That’s absolutely perfect. And played live beautifully.
I feel a BOC tribute band is coming! I’m in for some guitar parts!
Wow. Absolutely brilliant.
Dam, the fucking bass synth sounds 99.9 as the original one. Good job dude!
