I honestly don't get the sporty hate. As far as history and Harley goes, it is the most pure bred American V-twin in the harley lineup. Its reliable, and one might even say bulletproof in some cases. This is coming from someone that owns a brand new 2021 Road Glide Special, and I still love my sporty. Ill never sell her. The Sportster is the only fully air cooled model they have currently, it sounds awesome, and its what the "real bikers" road back in the day. My stage 1 sporty 1200 absolutely keeps up with my friends brand new 2021 Low Rider S. I am about to do the 120HP hammer kit to my sporty soon and I cant wait to destroy baggers on the daily. Sportsters will be cool forever!!!
10000% agree. My 05 Roadster (hotter cams and heads from the factory) holds its own against my buddies 120whp Road glide. I mean its a beautiful bike don't get me wrong but I can rip the twisties, and I bought my bike 10 years ago for the amount he put into his motor alone... Cost/performance it is an absolute bargain, at least in the Harley world.
My brother is getting an 883. I ride a ‘98 Springer with an 80ci carbed Evo. I love her with all my heart. When I told him that he would probably smoke me on speed he didn’t believe me just because my bike has a 1337cc displacement. I just pointed out that his bike weighs a lot less, and HE weighs a lot less. My brother learned about Power to Weight ratios the other day.
As an Iron (883 < 1200) owner, I really commend the cc change in order to enter high ways and long trips I did a trip from Guatemala to Panama on my Iron and the change to 1200 kit was a plus. It was a beautiful trip and I'm so proud of my Harley Davidson crossing "Las Americas" like a king, my Iron never failed, never stopped. 😎✌️
Really glad to hear that. I'm about to buy an 05 883 with the 1200 screamin eagle package. It makes me feel really good to hear such a positive story about these things.
I have been having a fantastic time riding the hooligan. Love it man. But it seems like it rains more than the sun shines. Rain for the next 3 days but sunny for a few days after that.
can't wait to do a cam switch on my sporty. wish I could do a 1275 kit , but the way my account is set up... definitely loving the feedback and seeing all these sporty's.
I have the basic 1275 hammer kit in my garage next to my bike. I've only had it a week, plan on starting my install next weekend. Been busy but I cannot wait. I been riding my stage 1 1200C. It's very fun
Nothing like a 1275 Hammer..Blockhead..good job. You can squeeze 130 horses..Trust me..and above..the clutch is stiff as a 2×4....We need a 6 speed..better fuel mileage..Mines been to Arizona and Ohio..lots of passing power. I run 4" Cobra neighbor haters..Awesome..good job.
Not that anyone asked. But I love Sporties, so i must share mine. My Iron 1200 named "American Sports" with the red/white/blue AMF design has: Stage I- Bassani Radial Sweepers, Kuryakyn Hypercharger ES, FP3 tune Screamin' Eagle Performance Clutch (future proofing for upcoming Stage II cams) Legends Revo 13" shocks "More Forward" Mid controls. (perfect in-between for mids and forwards, I'm 6' and love it) Kuryakyn adjustable levers (made the performance clutch easier to pull in) Saddleman Step up seat with red stitch Memphis Shades Cafe fairing (looks better and blocks more wind than stock fairing) Red base LED headlight (lights are white, body of headlight red) LED signals with smoked lenses. Sissy Bar Red foot pegs, clutch peg. Red bolt hardware. I've put so much work in the bike, everything done myself (nothing has been difficult). But I love the Irons, man. Love how customaziable it is and I love how easy it is to whip it around down town city riding. Note: The memphis shades cafe fairing blocks a noticeable amount of more wind than the original fairing. Makes hopping on the hwy a lot easier. Before I hated going over 75 mph for any amount of time, I'd just get beat up. But the memphis shades cafe fairing, I can go 90 before feeling I'm getting beat up after.
I prefer mid controls. Had a Sportster with forwards and that was the thing I hated the most. I am 6' tall too. I like the 1275, but just couldn't justify spending that much.
Yo Blockhead, I have been riding for 55 years I have never owned a Sportster I have always appreciated the simplistic look of the Motorsickle. I have ridden many, each time was it an uncomfortable experience like riding a fence rail. I am anxious to demo the new Sportster S with the Revolution Max engine. You Meet the Nicest People on a Honda Valkyrie. Keep the Shiny Side Up.
My 2002 Orange and Black 883r is getting this conversion as we speak. I've had sportbikes all my life since age 17, best bike I've ever ridden is the Sportster.
My boy just bought a Sportster 883 that he wants to put apes and forward controls on. I will send him this video, it should help him decide how to custom his bike. Thanks for sharing!
Great video Mr. Head. Always fun to ride someone else’s bike just to see all the customizing that you didn’t do on your own! Haha. I’ve commented before that I buy used bikes because they pick me. Someone has already done things I would have done and started the project for me. Great job as usual, hope you are enjoying the new career!!!! Pete
Love my '99 883. Put viking bags and eagle lights leds all around. Not done yet, but it's so much fun to ride. Now the question is which big bore kit to do when I get that money saved up. Oh and I'm 6'4". Think bars are next tho for a more comfortable position.
just a difference in sprocket size, easy enough to adjust either direction, and probably compression ratio, but a stock 1200 vs a standard catalog conversion isn't much different

Man, been looking for another 1200 to cafe. Ivr been finding a whole butt ton of 883's for cheap cheap... very tempted to be down another week or 2, get an 883 and just big bore it.

Drag bars and rearsets on my 1200c. I had forwards before, and have ridden sporties with mids(and you're right- squatty potty), but the rearsets are so much more comfortable, for me anyway.
I had the same issue with my Iron 883, where I goosed it and the bike came out from under me, my ass was almost on the rear fender, holding by my finger tips. The bike had a slick fabric, bobber style seat. So there was no back edge to keep me in the saddle. Luckily I was able to grip the bike between my knees and hit the rear brake. Needless to say I changed the seat to a Saddlemen Dominator. Which I'm not a fan of. I feel like I'm sitting above the bike and not "in" the bike with a lower seat. So I went with the stock HD Iron solo seat. It's a bit softer and had a bit of a back edge on it.
Currently own a 2006 Victory Hammer 100ci Stage 1 80hp 103tq. Looking at a 2007 CVO Dyno with a ProCharger. I'd love to see the dyno on that bike. Had a 2004 Buell XB12R 103hp 84tq atw.

The best way to go while building and riding is the 883-1200, then consider heads, cams, and ignition as a package.
