  • Old Yoda is a hand puppet controlled by 4 people.
One person holds his hand inside Yodas head that holds the weight and left arm. With the same hand, he also controls the jaw with his thumb. Upper lip with his index finger and one finger for the brows.
The second person controls the right arm and hand.
The Third-person controls the eyes from a box with joysticks pulling the wires that go into the puppet and up to the eye mechanism.
Forth person has a similar controller box that controls the ears.

Stuart freeborn created the first Yoda with a bunch of other people. Sculptors makeup artists puppeteers or actors.
How do all those people fit on a scene with the on-screen actors then?
They build the set on a higher level. So the puppeteers can stand underneath. They then decided to make Yoda in CGI or 3D whatever you want to call it. It's made on the computer and added after the filming.
But for Yoda, I think it would work fine to keep the original idea of performance throughout the full Star Wars franchise.
But To have practical fx creatures on set is very challenging because the character's movement both needs to be synchronized between the puppeteers and then with the actors on set. But When everyone syncs up. And then the lighting is set perfectly it all looks amazing in the camera. And it touches the audience in a much better way than a computer-generated character does. It's not that they can't make realistic CGI but It's received differently by the audience.
Even in the Mandalorian Baby Yoda is a puppet.
Now years later the puppets have improved as the technology improved has as well. So now they can use very small servos and produce very small moving parts.
With 3d printers and micro servos. But baby Yoda is still controlled by several people in kind of the same way.
Just in case the performance of a puppet wouldn't look good enough.
But it turned out that it looked so good that they stopped doing backups and went full-on with the puppet version.
Which makes me very happy. Because it proves that it still this day is the best way to go.
But of course, if it doesn't look good it doesn't look good.
Then it kind of looks ridiculous actually.
My name is Richard Tomson and I wanna to make movies/stories just like that. So I gathered a bunch of passionate people and we made this sci-fi series that is inspired from those old movies we used to watch as kids.
The series is called THE SPACE APART and the first episode takes place in 1947 when two brothers discovers a UFO with an alien inside. From that day their lives will never be the same.
    INCLUDES
    Practical FX animatronic ALIEN.
    Miniature UFO model.
    Lifesize UFO model.
    Props, cars from the 1940s.
    Custom made clothes.
    Original music from Burning Planet.
4K resolution with a passionate film crew.
    A great dramatic sci-fi story.
It’s like this old classic film you kind of seen before, but instead of being made in the 80s, its made in year 2020. And that’s the whole point, we wanted it to look and feel like those old classics.
You can even hear it in the trailer voice, and feel it in the editing of the first episode. Movies are not made like this anymore.
And if you like this old-style I highly recommend that you subscribe to my channel so we can gather more people like you and I.
I got this idea, but quickly realized I couldn’t do this by yourself, I didn't have any money, no camera, no light, no sound, and in this case I neither had a UFO nor an alien.
So what did I do? I wrote down the script and told some friends. Who told some of their friends and so on. Finally, we had a small cast and crew.
We then shoot the first episode as good as we could, with passionate people and a budget of 10,000 dollars. We then made a trailer and launched it on UA-cam. Therefore, I’m asking you to watch the trailer right here.

We now cross our fingers, hope someone out there like the Episode, and want to watch more episodes.
Gather even more people, build a bigger audience, and be able to continue making more episodes and more aliens.
If you like it and understand our vision and goal, press the SUBSCRIBE button.
That will show me that you are onboard for this, and want to be a part of this crazy project.
Did I mention that the first episode is TOTALLY FREE to watch? So you have nothing to lose.
And if you don’t like it, no hard feelings.
Thanks for watching I’m Richard Tomson.

Yes, it was a winner choice on their end. They also made a point to have physical dark troopers and all other 'puppet' characters. If you watch the Gallery episodes, the effects team goes to explain how they used CGI elements - Grogu included. They made it mandatory that all CGI enhancements would follow strictly what a puppet can do, animation-wise. I think the only shots I can tell CGI is in use are some of the wide angle shots of Grogu walking around, and those only remove the puppeteers and extend the body of the character. It's very well blended and very subtle. A great mix of practical and CGI.

Yes exactly. Cgi is of course great if they can't hide rods and stuff in other ways. Ive seen some footage of when George Lucas tells the animators to limit the movement of the CGI Yoda. So great way to make it seamless.

Its 100% because the stiffness of the puppets neck. His movements didn't track and look like a head on a stick. I do a ton of puppets and you always sacrifice movement somewhere unless you have a million dollar animatronics team 😤

@@RichardTomson the lighting too of course like you said. Thinking later in the day with more shadows or a different forest with more growth maybe? Curious what your resolution was for that.

Yep. It was a nice forest but to shoot in the middle of the day as the story needed was not optimal. It was just to much light there to control it. My own fault. I presumed it would work. Because the alien was so great looking. 😕

Can't press that link. 🤔 I'll try on my computer later.
