Rear Projection in a modern style
Movie magic with only a projector is still used in big movies. Rear projection or front projection, kind of the same effect. Depends on filming setup. We made a sci-fi series inspired by old 80s movies with practical effects, animatronic aliens and minature UFO models. We used a projector to make the alien to cast a shadow on set for the camera to pick up as a practical fx.

How I made 80 Aliens to then give away on movie premier. Timelapse on how I made them in my small studio. That's a very smart use-case. I may be doing something similar however in many cases it won't work because of the obvious fact that it is casting its own light.

I just went on a Rant on the ‘82 vs ‘02 remake Seriously though like they Replaced THE STAR of the film with a Worse version like what the heck ?! It’s just the “too much power in your hands” syndrome. It’s also like with Animatronics Themselves Looked Organic and REAL BECAUSE of how they moved IN RELATION To Real People and Surroundings ! Though with CGI it still looks Out of Place thus Looks NOT REAL because it’s Technically NOT. But Yes, also a Remake And a Remaster are Two Drastically Different Things and story lol

Thanks. I just youtube stuff and figure it out. The way I did the shapes for the UFO is from how they make boats hulls. So a cat would be the same Procedure as a UFO. 😉 But you need to have a 3d model first to slice. Then it's just gluing the foam core together. It's a lot of work to cut the foam. But you aren't afraid of massive projects. So wouldn't be a problem for you. 😀

Which projector do you use?

@@RichardTomson i was wondering if you have any budget projector recommendations because when i tried it oit with a £60 projector i just had terrible flicker
Flickering? In the camera's material you shoot against the projector?
I shot rear projection i had a white sheet behind my subject and the other side the projector, and it would flicker, i was only able to hide it by shooting with 1/30 shutter and i had to use moving footage
Ok. I don't know how much basic knowledge you have in filmmaking. But check the fps in the material you show on the projector. And also check what the projector is set to. Pal or ntsc. Then check the camera settings so everything match. If you don't use the same settings it can flicker. If you shoot in 24 fps for film your shutter should always be set in a 180 degree rule. So 24fps is 1/48 shutter. 30fps is 1/60 and so on. Many tutorials on this. I'm not good enough to explain it. I bet you will figure out the issue and get the fx to work.

The Disney ride Rise of the Resistance uses shadow projections in one of the stormtrooper scenes! I have never seen anything like this used in film tho!

Foam core with plaster filler cheapest I could find. Then Fiberglass and paint.

We have the technology to make a ufo now a days, made out of the same way the magnetic 🧲 technology from the railroad From China concept that train can travel 300 mph or 500mph?? well take that rail road into a circle ⭕️ Pretty big size right? So imagine that railroad in circle spinning around 300 mph ⭕️ and in the middle filled in with fin fan kinda like a turbine , now imagine the force of air!? N above it the cockpit n controls lithium battery’s etc ,wouldn’t that work ??

Hi James. Nope, our project is called "THE Space Apart" but ive seen there is a shortfilm with almost the same title. But not ours.. We shot ours on Black Magic 4,6K in RAW.
I think it's like a modern version of the 'Nosferatu shadow' using a projector instead light. Good technique!
