Thank You Andrew Tischler I'm hugely impressed !!! I have painted many portraits , the elderly are more interesting to paint . I'm 84 yrs and have not painted for a while . I have undertaken to paint a lifesize portrait from a black and white photo , I have it well started on canvas , I knew the subject well before he died , but to apply the colours and detail correctly I need courage and inspiration .

And as others have pointed out, most people don't have time or can't afford sitting for an artist, photos make that easier for everyone. I like Tischler's approach to this problem, when he can he does a quick study to capture the sitters 'personality', and takes his own photos to uses later to help with the details for the final painting. Its a win win for the artist and the sitter.

Really appreciate your straight forward and enthusiastic description of your painting process. You did a great job of identifying the feeling of insecurity that occurs just after successfully blocking in the color and tamping down the anxiousness of jumping too fast into details. Very much appreciated!

I fell ill a dozen or so months ago, and as a result, wasn't able to participate at my favorite pass time, painting. I'm far from a professional, yet it did occupy a lot of my free time which I loved, and of course added another dimension to my life and way of being. Recovery can be a long and drawn out process, and I don't mind sharing that it was starting to take its toll on me. Then I stumbled across one of your tutorials, and found it so inspiring I've started research again for a new painting. Such was the effect your tutorial had on me, inspiring me to move on with my life as opposed to giving in to its many obstacles. I wanted to take the time to thank you for that. Whether I ever get around to complete what I've started is neither here or there, but instead, that I was able to find inspiration by way of your teachings. And that my friend is certainly the makings of a real teacher. Thank you again for helping me find some direction! Naturally I subscribe to your channel... Good luck!

Though I'm 70 yrs.old I'm still learning from you. You're just a very talented young man. I'm Rosi from merced California. Thank you for sharing such lovely work with the world.

This tutorial is truly amazing. Her age brings way more detail than a young smooth skinned person. Your method is simply amazing and it shows that you have spent much time developing it.
As more of a beginner, I use methods of laying out my subject that I used while I was a sign painter and billboard artist. Many consider it cheating when using an overhead projector but that's what I have settled into, saving lots of time on the layouts.
One thing I didn't catch was if you paint wet on wet or do you let each layer dry.
Being older, (70) I can only work for an hour or so at a time before I get exhausted. It's the mental concentration that exhausts me the most.
Thank you so much for posting this. It is my opinion that portraits are the final frontier of learning to paint.

@@johncorley3487 Hello, I just thought you’d want to know that you send this message to someone who commented on this video, and not the one who made it, acrylic painting is harder to blend but as you know dries quickly, whereas oil doesn’t (therefore is easier to blend). The outline and blocking principle does apply to acrylic, although a big reason people do it with oil paint is because the blocking and outline can be manipulated after you’ve done it, so the answer is yes but drawing an outline may be easier for acrylic.

Watching you paint is like listening to the best music composition. I’m learning to paint in oil and am only a novice and to do life like portraits in oil is my goal. I’m actually using adobe fresco to learn technique before applying it to canvas because it’s rather forgiving and does give you the feel of using the brushes. I’ve done this with watercolor and the multiple mistakes I made became very costly so having the pencil and adobe fresco I was able to tighten up my techniques without wasting canvases. This is a great tutorial and having you say to allow the blocking to dry is something the other tutorials I’ve watched was never done. So my first oil I used your method and it was a very big difference. I’ve not tried a portrait yet on canvas but have done a few landscape paintings but portraits are my preferred choice of painting. You’re the best and you explain things in a way that’s better than others. All my portraits with airbrush and watercolor just don’t achieve that quality of what oil produces. I’m not on your level but I can achieve lifelike results with airbrush. To me that’s low quality compared to oil. The ability to build your painting as you did here makes it more vibrant and of the highest quality whereas airbrush is not. I love your tutorials and would love to have the opportunity to just sit and watch you but your videos are what I have to settle for. I can’t ask the questions as you’re doing the brushing like how you mix your pallet or what is your oil mixture for dry brushing. Anyway thank you for sharing your knowledge.

A ton of effort........you make it look effortless. Delicate, gentle brushwork to recreate a gentle, delicate subject. A very revealing look into your
process from beginning to end. Actually feel a little guilty getting free lessons like this. It's like going Vegas and watching an illusionist and then
he tells you how he did it, removing the mystery surrounding it. Tell me........do wear glasses at all when you work? Do you have any vision issues? Don't mean to get personal but, I've got a few and was wondering how you got around them if you did. As usual, great stuff and thanks.
Oh yeah, thanks for using my comment/question in this video.

Yeah, I have a stigmatism in my right eye, and it can give me headaches if I don't wear corrective glasses. I should wear them but I don't often!
Thanks so much for the comments. I really appreciate the feedback!

This is the first video of Andrew's that I've seen and he is amazing. To me, as someone who can't paint (or draw), it is like magic. The face just comes out of this chaos into extraudinary order. If I had the money I'd cover my walls with this kind of artwork. Fantastic.

Practice and practise and learn the basics like colour theory, anatomy of the body and etc and you can be good at art too.

tay melanin The best day to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The next best day is today. If you really want to develop a talent and wished you could do the same, it's really simple, but really hard to do. It means you have to confront yourself and actually do what you wish you could do. Self discipline is the biggest form of self-love and all you need to do is actually apply yourself, to whatever it is you want to do and you will eventually get there. So I hope this message finds you well and I hope you get to do whatever it is you wish to be able to do. But remember, You can do whatever it is, you want to do, as long as you do, whatever it is, you have got to do. Be blessed.

tay melanin You are more then welcome, I hope you will pick up whatever it is, you think you want to do. If you want to see some proof of progress and plain hard work. Just go watch this video, ua-cam.com/video/wBk4efNH7l8/v-deo.html you'll see what I mean. All it takes is putting in the effort, the difference between you and a master is that the master had a lot of time invested in practicing his/her art, whatever that may be. Have a magnificent day.
