Studios have always had focus groups and pre-screenings. "Toxic Fandoms" is just an easy excuse to use when Hollywood barely bothers to put together a coherent storyline, relateable characters, good dialogue and show some respect for the source material. Worse yet is when they decide to "subvert fan expectations". So don't blame the fans, stop making garbage.

Are we allowed to dislike a movie for bad writing and poor performances anymore? Or do they just keep asking until they get the response they want to hear?

I have to agreed, this is a poor video from WhatCulture. Franchises like Star Wars and Marvel have made so much money because of the fanbase. Having these companies telling them they are toxic because they don't like the story or direction it is going in it, is ridiculous. Its like McDonalds stop selling beef and only sold veggies burgers, then insulted their customers for poor sales!!

People will downvote a trailer into oblivion before the projects even gets released. Once it does come out, they’ll praise the ones that align with their politics and label anything they dislike as 'woke,' blaming that for the bad writing-even though many other factors are involved. It's all part of the culture war. You'll hear complaints like, "The writing is so bad, a woman can't realistically take on five men at once, and her expression doesn’t even change-terrible performance! terrible!"... I just see a lot of bad 'reviews' from fans, even when the writing & performance is good.

@@jamesmswenko8292 Great response. I love the Star Wars saga, but the last 2 sucked. Not because they were woke, they just sucked. The writing was awful, and they made no sense. They also ruined Luke Skywalker. They had great cinematography and scoring, but the actual plot sucked. But Rogue One, and Andor were phenomenal, and both had strong female characters. The difference was the writing. Woke now means I’m conservative, and I don’t like this…

I agree. Rings of Power lovers claim that it is being bashed by "anti-woke" people. But the vast majority of criticism I've read is about how bad the writing is and how small this epic tale is being made. Small number of beings, small number of buildings, small cities, small fights, etc.

The problem is legitimate criticisms are being blown out of proportion to serve a narrative. It's the critical analog to 'doing your own research' where OF COURSE you can find evidence on the internet to support the conclusion you've already come to. Thanks for asking.

This initiative will mean jack squat if the writers remain incompetent at their jobs, or studios keep pushing out products with a half-baked script finished.
The core issue of all this is that Hollywood has become a 100% for-profit business. Nobody cares about the artistic merits of the movies anymore, they only care about the profits that can come from it. THAT’S the core issue here. Nobody’s gonna want to do anything risky because that hurts their box office, but now combine that with half-baked scripts and you get a Rise of Skywalker situation where it’s trying DESPERATELY to please the fans while being a terribly written ordeal at the same time. And as long as that core mentality of making films as quickly as possible not for the artistry but for the money, Hollywood will never again capture its golden age in like the 90s and 2000s. It never will.

The fans are frustrated and keep getting disappointed over and over and it’s obvious it is just getting worse. The worst part about Star Wars is not that they messed with the lore but that they did so with such disrespect. Both to the characters and to the fans. If Disney had treated the last trilogy the way George wanted it done, they would have cleaned up at the box office and fans would have been satisfied with the end of the Skywalker saga. They then could have done it their way with the fans blessing. Instead, they did it their way out of the gate, disrespecting George, the lore, and the fans, and ultimately failed miserably. The reasons are obvious to all but Disney...☺

But they either needed to get all of the writers into a room to hash out the whole trilogy as a cohesive unit or they needed to schedule them far enough apart that they had time to develop each in reaction to the previous movie. If you want each one to be a unique vision, then don't make them a trilogy.

The term superfan is definitely a misnomer. Someone who reads something online that challenges their view and says,"I already know this is going to be garbage and I am not going to waste my time watching!!!!" is not a superfan, quite the opposite actually. The world evolves and media reflects that. It needs to. I would go further and say it needs to push boundaries or it will grow stagnant. How would the original depictions of Captain America and Superman view the popularity of anime and manga around the world? Wouldn't they view it as corrupting influence of the east on the west? Is that the depictions we should be using today?

Considering acting on the stage has nearly always had people of different genders, races, etc playing different roles, it's weird that movie & TV watchers are so against it - especially with all the mountains of reboots meaning there is essentially no main canon anymore. This is, I am sorry, an idiotic take. Studios are letting the fact that they are doing this to take the heat off them. This idea that fandom is tanking movies just because they are out for blood and that’s why we are going to get bad movies is absolutely false and dumb.
The issue isn’t “super fans”. The issue is people want good movies with our agendas. Why is it when a movie does bad with any agenda, edge or politics in it it’s toxic fans that ruined it. But when a movie comes out without that and it’s bad, oh well it’s just a bad movie. Fans didn’t ruin it. This take is your way to explain aqua bad movies that push an agenda. Just because you might agree with that mindset doesn’t mean the majority of people (super fan or not) are the problem. Studios need to stop making focus groups and stop pushing agenda. Just make good movies.
If someone tells me that is sexsit or homophobia, I am going to loose it. The Acolyte was just trash. Nothing do with a female lead (Mike I point you to route one and Ashoka). These comments along with the video proves where the issues lie. I agree, there are genuinely more bad movies coming out lately and it’s been clear most of these companies are only profit motivated with the goal of the widest audience possible every time, unwillingness to take risks, and be more creative. But for some of you to sit there and pretend like there aren’t also many examples of people loudly trashing films, shows, video games, etc. in extremely bigoted, homophobic, racist, and sexist ways is ignorant at best and harmful at worst. Both things can be true. Both things are true. There absolutely are issues of poor writing, bad acting, nostalgia baiting, and the like more than before. But there is also an equally big issue of hate campaigns and review bombings against any media that just happens to have women, POC, or LGBTQ+ representation as soon as that first trailer drops. It’s not just one or the other and the solutions lie in the middle, dealing with both problems equally. But they both do exist. You can’t dismiss that and pretend every criticism lately is made in good faith.

I think the problem is the rise of a certain element that decries anything remotely different in terms of race or sexuality that actually emboldens studios to do the opposite because they don’t want to be seen appeasing bigots. Then the rest of us who legitimately have complaints about how lazy so much writing has become will now be hesitant to criticize it out of concern as being part of this whole anti woke mob. At least that’s how it’s been for me because I have actually worries about the state of film these days but knowing that I’ll be in this same group as these haters makes me just not even bother giving my input.

For me, the biggest fandom I'm invested in is Star Wars. And while they make, imo, brain dead choice like retconing Mundi's life span, ultimately that isn't the worse thing for me. For me, the biggest problem with something like Star Wars today isn't the changes, but how there's barely an established canon at all in the Disney Canon. There wasn't much of one in Legends either, but in Legends most of it was spread out over a much larger timeline.

While I agree that there is a very vocal minority out there that decries anytime there is a person of color cast in a particular role or there is an LGBTQ role or anything that isn't "white hetero male" orientated, Hollywood has failed us overall. Their reliance on draining every bit of blood from a popular concept (I am looking at you Disney) instead of being pushing the envelope is what is making movies bad right now. We all knew that when Disney bought LucasFilm and then Marvel, that they would make sure they got more than their money back, yet we all act surprised that Disney did so, and did so poorly. And as much as we like to malign Netflix, they at least are willing to push that envelope with their offerings.

I listened to what you had to say and completely disagree. Poor quality is the problem, my example would be the Obi Wan Kenobi show, The potential for something amazing was there. Moses Ingram was not the problem (and if she was abused then that is awful and unacceptable), it was the script and execution. It was excruciatingly bad and I haven't watched a Star Wars show since. Don't blame the fans, most of us just want something good.

I like your content but this is a bad take. The tiny minority of actually toxic fans aren’t the problem, and they damn sure aren’t why we get nothing but derivative drivel these days. Identifying that as the problem is falling for HWs most stupid and obvious campaign of distraction. The vast majority of us couldn’t care less about the identity of the characters or identity politics period. The problem is that the content is garbage, partly due to creators and execs being put in positions that they just aren’t actually any good at. Make a quality piece of entertainment, and it will be recognized as such. Make trash, and it will also be identified as such. The R card is just tired and lazy, and lets the real issue and people creating it off the hook. HW soliciting the input of their actual audience is not only probably not a bad thing, but just might actually lead to better content from a group of people in a very insulated bubble echo chamber. Poeple like good things and they dislike bad things, it’s really that simple and this identity crap is a smokescreen and a pathetic excuse for subpar output.

100%, the bloodlust is a reaction to the bad writing, casting, and generally poor cinema of recent times, not the cause of it. people are fed up and annoyed that everything is either formulaic, sequels, or a blatant pander to get diversity gold stars. saying everyone who disagrees with this is a toxic fan is ridiculous and just going to polarize the audience more, leading to more backlash.

  • @johnsmith-kc8rk

    1. Making big budget movies has become the province of people who were born into wealth. Increasingly, they are the children of people born into the industry or into families that can afford expensive prep schools and six figure college tuition. Growing up rich is terrible for creativity. If you grow up playing with a stick and bundle of keys, your imagination turns them into something else, but this is not something rich kids are forced to do.
    2. Bereft of any creative talent, these horrible people stride forth determined to make movies that teach their audience a lesson, like not to be racist or sexist. People will listen to a fable like that for about 5 minutes and then it starts to sound preachy and that’s when they turn on it. This is why Aesop kept his stories very brief.
