I'm twice your freaking age. I can't believe the emotions that get stirred up when I listen to May talk about what she loves/hates/regrets/embraces. Great job, this is why art exists!
im so happy these films are getting the recognition they deserve. theyre some of the best things ever and probably the magnum opus of both shiraishi and the found footage genre. i hope it was my comment on the first iceberg vid that got you to watch them and i really hope this video gets more people to watch them. the seventh entry (Final Chapter!) is by far my favorite and I love how it gives Shiraishi a chance to shine as an actor. its also worth noting that a bunch of Shiraishi's other films might be a part of the same multiverse as this series, since the cameraman character from this shows up in A Record of Sweet Murder and Kudo shows up in a bunch of stuff (theres other connections but that's just off the top of my head). also the worms in noroi might be connected to the worms in this, but maybe shiraishi just likes worms.
The stylistic CGI was one of my favorite parts of Occult. It made me laugh so hard when people criticized it for being "unrealistic" like I'm sorry, how would you personally depict a nightmarish realm of flesh-eating worms and jellyfish creatures. How can you make that realistic. What is the source material for Worm Hell. No fun allowed I guess
Every day of the week I'll take Shiraishi's crude, cheap, but nonetheless extremely easy to parse CG over million dollar Hollywood slop that is both generic and indecipherable and also killed like 1000 VFX artists in its creation.
I watched the whole series earlier this year and without exaggeration it changed my life for the better. It inspired me to get back into art after my career was derailed by the pandemic.
I am so, so happy for the Twin Peaks season 3 episode 8 shout-out. I often tell people that my favorite film isn't a film, it's that particular episode of Twin Peaks, particularly for how it ties the series together while still being an incredibly surreal Eraserhead-style art piece all its own. The visuals are unforgettable, but it also feels like Lynch really bringing together his affinity for the weird and his storytelling prowess. It's definitely a career summarized in the length of a single episode, and to me it felt like Lynch's entire career had led up to that episode and the finale.
Not only is that episode one of the greatest works of art ever created, i think that David Lynch is able to tap into the underlying truth of reality and that that episode might not be that far off from what actually happened
So glad I paused this a couple minutes in before you described the episode and went and watched all 10 episodes. I disagree with skipping ahead to episode 6. The build-up is so important the whole show
I LOVE the Senritsu series! It is so good to see people finding it and enjoying it. I wish I could give the director/writer much money so I can get the blu ray set of Senritsu. It is so wacky but there were moment that made me jump or freaked me out (the first one with the slit mouth lady...that end bit, shivers down my spine!) I watched them in order as there is an over arching story, but wow I wish I could watch them again. Kudo is a great character, that man punches first asks questions later. You can tell these films are made with such love and passion. I found out about them through Trevor Henderson, and I hope more people watch it thanks to you Nyx. It's so good.
There aren't many ways to support him outside of Japan, but there are some! A Record of Sweet Murder, Carved, and Sadako vs Kayako have had localized dvds, and Noroi and Cult can be streamed.
oh yeah ive been getting into like random horror videos on the internet and i feel this so much you really can make anything you want and theres an audience
YES I took a Japanese Cinema course in college and we covered Occult as one of our films! It was one of my favorites, and when I had the opportunity to cover any japanese film i wanted I chose to watch another one of his films, A Record of Sweet Murder. Just outstanding films, it's rare to find art that sticks with you for so long after seeing it.
I just got back from the theatre and girl you HAVE to see The Substance (if you haven’t already) I think you’ll find it the best horror movie of this year. It’s so so good. I think you’d have fun talking about it in a video too :)
So Sugisawa Village had a sign warning you not to go further as there's no guarantee of your life if you do. It's abandoned and you could lose your mind there. Inkuki village has a sign saying the laws of Japan don't apply here. There seem to be two stories, one you go there, you die because the residents will kill you. Two you get a call that curses you, you get transported there, lose control of body and mind and die. This makes me think more of the first story.
OMFG I'm literally watching "we're all going to the world's" fair right now for the first time and I JUST saw you in it, only to come here immediately and find a new video, double awesome 😁
@@Dman333WS I wanted to watch "I saw the TV glow" and saw this one came first so I checked it out...its right at the end now and I'm feeling so many feelings 😭
I'm friends with some big Koji Shiraishi fans and I'm pretty sure I've watched this last year in some way shape or form.. Maybe I didn't see all of it but certainly some of it. And Koji uses those characters in a whole bunch of movies and shows too, and there's a lot of his early work that ties in to stuff that happens as well. it's like it's own little Marvel universe of Japanese ghosts. I might be getting this confused with Welcome to the Occult Forest, which I think was also a series but maybe re-edited into a movie? So confusing. But after watching a whole bunch of his films and tv shows I do see a lot of patterns and his particular style come through.
I could cry that your having this reaction, movies with what i would call dream logic are so underappreciated! These are the storys i want to tell. I could go on but i would turn this into a novel, i liked and subbed. Thank you for making this video!
Huh. The few seconds of footage May posted at the beginning immediately made me think: That reminds me of the movies that the director of Noroi did before he made Noroi. And it turns out I was right! He's an odd duck (in a good way), and his movies have a very recognizable vibe.
Your final assessment about art reminds me of how great it felt to watch The Curse. Im hoping I can bring some of this to the world in my own flavor someday, we'll see
I watched the 2023 film Senritsu Kaiki World and was FLOORED. I then watched the one you touch on in the video and absolutely loved it. Such a crazy series.
You had me at Fox Mulder + Zak Baggins, so glad this is on youtube too. Theres a shorter form mockumentary series called "fake documentary q" on here too, i thought that one was wild, but this series takes the cake 😂
May!! I remember not too long ago the comments were begging you to watch Noroi and now here you are casually pointing me to a Shiraishi Koji series I haven’t been able to find to rewatch in years❤ I love his stuff so much, he is so unfettered by convention and even with little to no budget he has a way of creating images that really stick with you. (Occult’s “It’s hell!” ending still gives me the heebies-like, are the visuals cheesy and dated? Sure, but it’s still some of the most effective cosmic horror I’ve ever watched.) I am so happy you’re a fan, and I’m psyched you want to do a full series on Senritsu Kaiki. Can’t wait!
You were in my dream last night. No lie. I woke and a saw this video on my feed and was like wtf. Ive never seen you or your channel before and I'm astounded. As well as you're covering this on top of it all. Love your channrl, love your approach and appreciate the breakdown. ❤ty I'm glad u showed up as a recommeded channel

Yay! the Kowasugi movies are my absolute favorite! I'm surprised you didn't mention it, but the cameraman is played by Shiraishi himself! I don't jive with ALL his work, but I love his horror mockumentaries a lot. He loves those haunted worms. (So do I)
I think my favorite is actually 2 because (while you don't know it yet) it relates directly to the rest of the story and the "main" character is so strange and creepy. But the whole thing is just great and it's amazing how it's all connected once you understand what's going on
I was already thrilled at the sudden upload and bold ass claim, ready to swallow hook line sinker, then you mentioned slit mouthed woman, and I remembered kuchisake-onna, fell down the rabbit hole and yeah... I'm a believer now, gonna watch everything this man's ever made now! EDIT: But also, with regard to "making sense", a prof I had in grad school turned me on to Reinaldo Arenas, a queer cuban writer from way back who 100% says making sense can go to hell and it is glorious, a true visionary.
as soon as i saw the intro, i knew this had to be a koji shiraishi thing. the ending to occult is one of the only things in a movie that has ever truly shook me to my core and left me uneasy for several days afterward. SO happy to hear theres more of his terrifying freak shit out there that i havent even Heard of yet
The second I saw the footage, I instantly knew it was a Kōji Shiraishi movie just by how it looked I absolutely loved Noroi and Occult and had idea this even came out, so I'll definitely give it a look :)
I decided to go watch the thing before watching your thoughts on it and, yeah, I gotta say I agree; I feel like I've been handed a hall pass for making any kind of art that I want, and that feels GREAT
This may be the first time I paused one of your vids to watch something else. The first episode of Senritsu Kaiki is intriguing, even if it comes across as a Japanese version of Grave Encounters. I'll probably watch the rest of the episodes while trying to sleep, and see how that goes.
The first clip with the girl with the wet mouth would be perfect for a olive garden commercial with a quote for olive garden Japan branch saying "your here because you are here"
watching those intro clips made me go “wow this reminds me of the end of occult fuck i love that ending” so mind blown its actually by the same guy. i had no idea this came out, so excited to go watch.

Lucky there's a Family Guy
Genuinely would have been shit outta luck without May on this one
Hrm, a man with dead parents who runs around solving his problems with a baseball bat. A "bat-man" if you will.
