Love your Enemies

- After Jesus gives the beatitudes in the Gospel of Luke, he makes a demand of his followers that is, quite frankly, counter-intuitive: Love your Enemies.
This is difficult but not impossible. Many times today the term "love" is synonymous with a feeling, either feelings of good will toward someone or an index of how one feels in someone's presence.
But, this isn't the way Jesus is using this term. He uses the "agape" type of love in this context to refer to an act of the will, not a feeling. And, he gives specific ways to show love towards others, especially those who are our enemies:
1. We are to do good to those who hate us. We return good for evil, regardless of how we feel. We may feel upset, angry, and so on, but we are still expected to do good if we are a follower of Jesus.
2. We are to bless those who curse us. We are to speak good about and to the person who curses us.
3. We are to pray for those who abuse us. Sometimes an offense against us can be so grievous that we cannot even be in the same room as that person. But, that does not remove the requirement to show love to that person through praying for him. We can always pray for others - even our enemies - as an act of love.
Notable Quote:
Now, every one of those, the image of non-resistance, the idea of giving alms to everyone (I mean, that’s crazy, right? What are they going to do with my money? They might use it to do something bad), the idea of lending to someone who you know isn’t going to pay you back; those all seem irrational at first glance, but what Jesus is saying to us is that “it’s not irrational (he wouldn’t have said it this way, but this is how I am articulating it), it’s super-rational.” It’s kind of like the blessings and the woes. It seems irrational, earlier in the sermon, for Jesus to say, “Blessed are you who mourn. Blessed are you who are hungry. Blessed are you who are poor.” No, no, no. Those are the people who are cursed. Those are the people who are punished. Those are the people who are suffering. But no, there’s a paradox built into this. It’s unexpected; it’s surprising. It seems irrational, but that’s because it’s not operating according to the logic of this world. It’s the logic of the kingdom of heaven. It’s the logic of the Son of God, who comes into this world to be struck on the cheek in his Passion, and not to fight back. Who comes into this world, who is rich, but became poor for our sake, so that we might be saved. Who gives to everyone; who gives his life for everyone, even the ones he knows are going to reject him and not give him a return. Who will not accept the gift of salvation; he still gives it to them. It’s the logic of the kingdom; it’s the logic of the cross. That’s what Jesus is talking about here with “love your enemies”.

So my daughter was murdered and her killer is unrepentant and only did 2 years so there was no justice. I pray for his soul. And I told God that I wouldn't track him down and take my pound of flesh but if I see him I certainly will. I feel like every breathe he takes is an act of mercy on my part. Is that not enough?? Is my anger not righteous anger? Are there not saints that have killed men for less??
Wow, just when I thought I understood clearly the Golden Rule. This guy explains it in a more profound manner that made me level up significantly in my faith and knowledge of God's teachings. His explanation gave me a more intimate understanding of who God is and what he really wants to teach us.
Good explanation!! Difficult to do but I must obey Jesus.
Damn! I becoming addicted to this guy. Love it.

Thank you for deeper insight
Thanks Dr Pitre. God bless you
Best explanation on UA-cam I have been a victim of racial misconduct and assaulted by 2 police officers solely for asking for a supervisor and God sent me this commandment all I knew was to hate my enemies and is so hard to be kind to anything that hurts me. I am humbled by this experience but still have strings attached of eye for an eye and would love to take revenge since I never have hurt anything physically this seems so unfair and hard to understand the injustice or even find peace with God. Feels horribly awful
Dear Dr. Pitre, another unadulterated exegesis,🙏🙏. . Thanks be to God.
Go bless you , may you gather more and more people in your journey towards heaven.

Thats a radical love for sire..thank you for explaining especially that love is not emotional we dont have to love our enemies in that way..its innour actions.
I don't have any enemies and I try to love everyone, the people who mistreat or hate me only hate their own salvation.
No there you are self righteous and in no position to judge anyone in the strictest sense
Bless those who are trying to hurt you.
Great reflection
Love is expressed properly by Dr Petrie! We must will, think & act towards all with love- desiring goodness & salvation for them! But you do not have like them or their ideas, especially if those ideas cause sin! As the musical goes- F. on the roof-- when the crowd asks the Rabbi, is there a blessing for the Czar_ his reply- Oh, yes! May God bless the Czar and keep him very far away from us!
If you judge another person you don't have genuine time to love them.
Same good addiction all the same 🤔
Thank you
Give 'em the word of God.
🤯...Thank you
Pray for my priest, he continuously says things that could be considered heretical. I feel like he has a good heart but is a bit too modern and sometimes contradicts the teachings of scripture and the church.
When your priest preaches heresy you should challenge him, after Mass and others to witness it
@@jimmys6566 Matthew 18:15-17 But if thy brother shall offend against thee, go, and rebuke him *between thee and him alone.* If he shall hear thee, thou shalt gain thy brother. 16 And if he will not hear thee, take with thee one or two more: that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may stand. 17 And if he will not hear them: tell the church. And if he will not hear the church, let him be to thee as the heathen and publican.
There are soooo many pastors and other leaders who are narcissistic personalities. Left all the churches because of that. The communal and covert narcissists are THE WORST because of all the flying monkeys!!
As a beloved priest said to me circa 1965 Love your enemies immensely it blesses you tremendously and drives them crazy
Nice
I pray they become followers of Jesus Christ 🙏🏽
🙏🙏🙏🙏🤲
Bless those who curse swear at you. You can say bless your mouth. Bless your tongue.
Enemy is singular, Hate your enemy.
Jesus is talking about personal relationships only.
Pray for those who persecute you.
🤯
God bless you sir. I am blessed with your teaching.
7:10
No one ever gives real world examples of how to love your enemies. When you give your cloak in addition to your shirt, they see that and take your whole house. You'll be naked on the street.
Thanks for another lecture. All of them make Catholic doctrine to be more understandable. Except this one. Summary: there is a teaching from Jesus that is not rational and is surprising, because is not rational and is surprising. No further explanation from what we read directly.
I don't necessarily agree with the idea of giving money to someone who is clearly going to use it to buy drugs and alcohol so that they can further damage themselves.
I give them hot food and drink, they cannot corrupt the good will of nourishment once it's in their belly.
AMEN

35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Thank you,
But there are many contradictions between the verses in the bible, in a verse Jesus preached "love your enemy" that's good, however when we pring the following verses that are in the same bible, here's the great problem, so open your hand so as to balance between the contradicted verses (peace vs killing):
In Matthew 10:34 (KJV)
"Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword”
In SAMUEL 15:3
"Now go and strike Amalek and completely destroy everything that they have; do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey"
What?! Killing child and infant!! Are awakened man? Sure this not Jesus's sayings, so who? Sure you have no answer dear friend?
Wow what love you'r talking about? Answer rationality?
As Muslims we love Jesus and we believe in him as beloved prophet and servent of God Allah (the Father) not as devine bring. And we knew from the Quran which is the final testament from the God that the Christians didn't understand the message of Jesus peace be upon him, where many verses in the bible were changed by the authors, hence jesus's message was changed so the real Gosbel of jesus which believe is a light of guidance is no more.
--- Here's sincere message to the honest Christians---
May the God guide the honest Christians to Islam, why? Because they can really understand what Jesus peace be upon wanted to tell them.
Plesee see chapter of Mary in the Quran especially the verse 16, so be open minded brothers and sisters:

Thanks
Love your enemies! Hate your enemy...do both
Why would u do evil to anyone when your not evil only to beg for their forgiveness look bro the whole point is to strive to be good to do good and even wish for good (in good faith). Not do evil and get forgiveness u catholics are something else this is why I turn to Christianity
Pitre you are ripe ! Catholics tortured and killed thousands of human beings in their inquisitions. Your opinion of how Jesus loves is without scriptural basis. Isaiah 55:8 should guide the thinking of God's thoughts and words. Paul spoke specifically against your words on love.
I believe that's Dr Pitre 's whole point God's ways are so far above our ways as Isiah 55:8 says. His love that he's calling us to is so far beyond what we can imagine our abilities could be for loving and forgiving our neighbors , but God's grace is not only sufficient but sooo necessary!!
Not quite sure where the inquisition comes in, perhaps just an opportunity to bash your Catholic neighbor. God's blessings to you
