  • Is there a connection between sin and suffering?
In the Mass Readings Explained for the 3rd Sunday of Lent (Year C), Dr. Brant Pitre covers this topic straight from the lips of Jesus, which is the Gospel reading for this mass in Luke 13.
During 1st century Ancient Judaism it was common that people thought one's suffering was related to some form of sin that was committed by a person or his/her parents.
However, in Luke 13, Jesus makes clear that this common assumption that suffering is a result of sin is not always the case.
Jesus brings up the scenario of the massacre of the Galileans by Pilate and collapse of the Tower of Siloam to emphasize that many who suffered such a death was not due to any type of sin.
However, Jesus immediately flips it and tells his audience that if they do not repent, they too will likewise perish, the implication being that they will perish spiritually and die "the death" of spiritual death just like those Pilate and the tower killed physically died. So, while it is not necessarily the case that all sin causes physical suffering and/or physical death, it is clear that all sin does cause spiritual death, which is far worse, as that is permanent and eternal.
Moreover, in this intro video, Dr. Pitre also covers what the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches on the elements that constitute repentance. Rather than the negative connotation the word "repent" often conjures in our minds, it should be a most welcome word, as it is replete with positive dimensions that we all want in our lives.
