I'm very skeptical of some of those booktubers who "claim" they read 200 books last year. If that is true, how and how well did they really process it? For me the important thing is what did you get out of what you read. The number of books isn't important. I suspect it's more to do with keep their channels going and getting that content out there. I don't care if a channels puts out a video every single day. It just needs to be entertaining. Yours is def the most entertaining.
Totally agree with you!! I've found that very few of those kind of booktubers can go into a very detailed description and analysis of a book the way that Michael does. Michael also has a huge amount of knowledge about the authors, their careers and the background of the literary scene at the time. I would rather listen to Michael than a dozen "quick readers" who just skim the books.
I’m glad you are planning on reading more vintage science fiction. I enjoy your insights into that genre. And being an older person there’s a nostalgia for those books. Keep on keeping on, Dude.
of all the dumb channels, this is my favourite dumb channel with my favourite dumb mummy. I hear you about the pressure to finish the whole of something and find the time to also create the videos. I just got vol 1 of Varney for Christmas. I added it to my wishlist after hearing about it on this channel. I'm so excited to get to it.
That rocked, Michael! To you, Roger, and Future Roger, many smiles, mucho thanks, and great anticipation! Love ya, here in the woods of Relatively New Hampshire!
Your knowledge of SF, and its subject matter is exceptional. Hugely appreciated,...the expression of Levity is refreshing. Your display of a particular book is great. You hold it steady and for a good span of time to really " view " the tome. Thank You. Profuse Appreciation.
Your video title scared me more than a hatful of Rogers!! Thank goodness you're continuing in 2025 - of the couple of dozen UA-camrs I subscribe to, yourself and my daughter are my only "must-watch immediately" channels! And yours is the only channel where I routinely watch older videos. Please keep going with as many crazy projects as you can dream up. I (and many others) will be here cheering you on!!!!
I love how genuine you come across and that you don't read 1 billion thousand books a year. You are the only booktuber I follow so far and we don't even have much overlap in our reading choices (although in reference to your last video, I enjoy R.L. Stevenson and was excited to see you post the video), but you amuse me and I'm glad to always see your smile and whimsy. I bought the same version of Varney after seeing your video months ago and had to take breaks from it but almost done. I mean, how can I avoid a vampire book with a character named Dr. Chillingworth? Wishing you an exciting New Year, Michael.
Those changes sound like it will be easier on you, which is good news. You are the BookTuber I watch the most because you read at a human pace and have similar tastes to myself. I keep thinking about making book videos, but they would be in my car, which sounds odd. Maybe 2025 I will go for it.
As someone who did finish Varney in October (no idea how), I can assure you that there is a "feast of blood" by the end. So keep plugging, because the final part doesn't even feel like it was written by the same author! And I do plan to read Crashing Suns for Rocket Summer. It looks very appropriate and rocket-ish.
Sounds like we’ve got a good year of reading ahead of us! So far as personal goals are concerned, I’d like to read a little more history this year. I’d like to get to where I’m reading as much nonfiction as I am fiction. Of course we’ll see where that goes. I’d also love to get out there on UA-cam some this year, Lord willing. The wife got me an iPhone tripod for Christmas so I might have a setup to film. We’ll see though. Anyway, I hope everyone has a great reading year.
I will miss the Sunday Weekly reading report… I looked forward to it every Sunday and Sunday is or in this case was the perfect day for it…It just won’t feel the same to have a weekly reading report on Monday’s which is the first day of the week… But rest assured I will still be watching it 😊
The real Halloween nightmare is never being able to finish Varney, LOL. Great to hear your update. I somehow missed whatever time travel shenanigans got you 2 Rogers, but I'm a fan of Roger Moore so it's all good. Peace man.
Hey Michael, you're a real continual inspiration to keep me on my own reading list journey! But hey, have you ever considered a video devoted to poetry (or your favorite authors' poetry) and a video devoted to women authors, SF or otherwise?
I'll have to keep a look out for Edmond Hamilton vintage books. I know he wrote a ton of Legion of Super Heroes comics which also I like. Great channel Michael!!
The Rogers are multiplying! We’re doomed!! 😮. Oh IT! Took me a full month to read last year. Good luck with that and Varney! I look forward to the mischief!
Heads up: The title story of Crashing Suns is awesome, but the rest of the book is a "fix-up" that basically repeats the story four more times. It's worth a read for that first story (and the awesome cover) but other than that, it's way too repetitive.
To each his own, but do you remember all of anything? Every song or tv series episode or movie that you’ve only experienced once? Most folks don’t, which is why we buy books and albums and movies, so we can experience them more than once. Luckily, most are digital now, so they take up barely any physical space at all. 😺✌️
Man, I love this stupid channel! Looking forward to the new year and all the vintage science fiction. You also can't forget Cimmerian Sept! I think im going to read Kull and Bran Mac Morn this year. Im also going to be reading some of The Shadow. My wife got me some additional reprints for Christmas. I look forward to comparing them to your Doc Savage reads! I look forward to you brightening up my Mondays!
I know this isn't exactly relevant, but I'm a big fan of your hats, particularly today's hat. Could you do a quick video on your hats? Or maybe link in each video where to purchase the hat that you are wearing in that video? Or at least start with today's video going forward? :)
A Beret next! No, a Sombrero! Pith helmet. Or a Fez, even. (That would be appropriate. Bet you've worn one already.) Coalminer helmet. One of those Carmen Maranda things with all fruit on it. Bearskin...
I'd love to see your take on either the Skylark series (note that Skylark Three is the second in the series) or The Lensman series (Galactic Patrol was the first written and is stand-alone), both by EE Smith.
I credit Tommyknockers with convincing my teenage self that not finishing book is ok sometimes. "But all this time I spent reading it will be wasted!" - "It will be no matter what. Do you want to waste even more of it? Look over there -- fun books! You could be reading those instead of stupid, boring Tommyknockers!" -"Ooooohh" Thanks, Tommyknockers! Hrm, maybe not the peptalk you need. Good luck! Happy new year!
I loved The Tommyknockers, but the editor should have been fired. The story was great, but the execution was terrible. I might read it again if they publish it “remastered” edition. 😺✌️
I'm usually pretty fickle when it comes to my future reading plans. Always changing my mind mid-stream, so to speak. Right now, for 2025, I am hoping to read through a good chunk of the "New Series Adventures" for Doctor Who (maybe 70 or so books). Knowing me, I'll probably make it through the first 10 or 15 before grabbing something else. But we shall see...
My reading speed does not match the amount of books I've accumulated (and keep accumulating), but my reading expectations always remain lofty. I'll need to do the math one day to see how many books I would need to read a week/month/year to get through what I have, giving those expectations a shot of reality ...not that it would make me stop collecting more books....
I kinda tried to figure that out only today-will need to read 2 books a week for the next 30 yrs,if I live that long,to get through what I own. Seems doable….
Michael are you keeping a running list of books you want to get once you finish your 500 book challenge? Are you disallowing library reads too while you are amid the challenge?
At first I couldn't believe that future Roger and present Roger were in the same time and place, the popular belief is that the two would cancel each other out in an explosion of tachyons. But then I recalled that Roger is also an arch-sorcerer of possibly ante-diluvian origin, and of course his magical powers overcome simple universal physics. Michael, you do the videos as often as it suits you and whenever it suits you. Your not-dumb-at-all channel is one of the highlights on UA-cam and by all means make things as easy on yourself as you can, you do us all a great favour by creating your video content. And happy first day of 2025.
Tommyknockers was the book that killed my Stephen King fandom. Several dozen pages about aliens controlling a woman's menstrual cycle was beyond the pale for me.
Please don't call this channel of yours stupid. I enjoy both you and Rodgers company. I'm still making my way through the complete tales of H.P. Lovecraft. I thought I'd be done with it in 2024... NOPE the last 5 stories are carrying over into 2025 for me. 😂 I like to take detailed notes as I read. For 2025, I'm going to read 11-22-63 by Stephen King and the manga adaptation of no longer human by junji ito. Which is a masterful piece of literature by Osamu Dazai. Which I'm excited to dive into. As of now, I'm reading the shadow out of time by H.P. Lovecraft and it's quite a trippy story. 😁
Future Roger is back! (Do you have any staff left at all?) Keep the 'stupidity' on your channel coming. You, Roger,(s) and the pups are a bright spot, even though you mocked me about reading Varney! Well, I rewatched "The Man Who Invented Christmas" and Varney made an appearance, so there! I will be reading Varney! ("Nosferatu, he is not!" ROF!) PLEASE read smaller books. I am determined to see you finish the challenge.
You should still call it The Weekend Reading Report so we can keep an anchor to reality. After all, you’re reading Feast of Blood and there’s no feast and no blood, so keeping the name would fit perfectly.
Instead of reading X number of books in a given period, why not change it up and read X number of CHAPTERS? I've recently read the first of the Horatio Hornblower novels, and because it was 24 chapters long -- like the number of 'books' in Homer's classics (the ILIAD and the ODYSSEY) -- it was easier to divide that up into, say, 2 chapters each sitting for 12 days, or 3 chapters for 8 days, or 4 chapters for 6 days, etc. I rarely have the time to hammer my way through an entire book in one sitting, so dividing up its contents into chapters helps out a bunch.
I know what you mean about finding time to read and reading slowly. I get about 50 pages a day on average, more on days off. Just take your time and enjoy it. It is about quality not quantity.
