Back in the day, by NHL standards, he was a middleweight. 154 pounder in the NHL would have been lightweight, not middleweight lol.... if there ever was a 154lb player lol. Youre an amateur.

Yup. And ESPN constantly telling us how disgusting this was. But yet ESPN loved it when the NBA would have their slap-fests. Or the NBA clowns. It was such BS.
This was also during a period when there were not time outs - during the periods to sweep and shovel ice. Providing more rest time for 1st and 2nd line players.
Your 3rd and 4th line players (physical lines) got a lot more ice time back then. The game was just downright physical.

Probert, often picked up as a fight would wear on. Clark, was most dangerous early, then would tire fast. Sometimes these fight highlights don't give the proper context. Injuries on a given night, late in the shift etc.

@@nthdegree1269 the truth is he was a pretty easy going guy most of the time it took him a little bit to get into the mood usually and once the other guy had taken a few shots he would be ready to fire - he was a tough enough kid that he could do that - Ive heard russ courtnall say how wendel kicked the shit out of probert over the past couple of years - and i have been thinking -really I'm the same age and i watched most of those games - i don't remember that at all but Courtnall would have been on the ice - so who was i to say - now i see what they are talking about - the way its described by leaf fans is completely detached from reality . I give plenty of props to Wendel - he was giving away at least five inches and probably 30 lbs or more - he was an awfully tough guy no question about that and that wrist shot was world class. Glad i got to see these - the way "Wendel could kick the shit out of Probert" is what i have heard - and its laughable to call it that way - in the one fight he jumped on him early kept his head down and hit him with some punches that is about there was too it - it is not like it even winded him - with the types of teams they have had since 67 - i guess you have to make the most out of the things you have to feel good for

Spell his name correctly - its Wendel
Clark always put the Toronto Maple Leafs first. He was there for every team mate when needed and it took a toll on his body. All the big hits, all the fights.... he did it all for the team. What a great team mate, player and Captain. He could have quit the fighting, less body checks, stayed healthier, played more games and scored more points but no.... he did what he had to do for the team, thats how he played the game.

Probert was all over Clark in the first fight, Wendel (that's how you spell his name) was ready for the ones to follow.

ROUND 1: clear win for Probert. ROUND 2: narrow win for Clark. ROUND 3: at first glance, looks like a win for Clark. However, Clark didn't land too many and that last right from Probert dropped Clark, so a TKO win for Probert. ROUND 4: an uneventful draw.

First of all, I was/am a huge Clark fan and grew up watching the Leafs. I was/am also a big Probert (RIP) fan and just watched his documentary; "Bob Probert. Storey of a Tough Guy, which was awesome and I highly recommend if you have not seen it. You can find it for free here on UA-cam . But I cannot help to notice that all of these fights occurred in MLG....you know what they used to say? Wendel at home, Wendy on the road...

I don't think that's fair. He fought John Kordic, Jeff Chycrun, Allan May, Cam Neeley, Shane Churla, Craig Berube and others on the road. Wendel was often injured and would be out for long stretches . His fight card would have been double if he'd stayed healthy.

@@nthdegree1269 yeah and good chance he got it fighting guys much much bigger than him - and don't forget it was not like he had anyone else who had his back - that matters too - he was taking on the toughest players the other team had the leafs didnt have many other guys who could battle for him on nights when his hands were banged up - or he is nicked up - that makes a big difference - Probert had Kocur at the ready most nights -ao he didnt have to taken on everyone , every night-- Probert was a hockey player- he liked to play the game too - of course so did Wendel - but should have never been counted on to fight like he did - i remember they had Brad Smith for a while - Bob Mcgill - but Probert speed bagged him a couple times no one else in that class

Another one of Wendy’s talents that rarely gets brought up by leaf fans is his extraordinary ability to jump almost every guy he ever fought. Nobody got the first punch in on Wendy. Hell, you rarely knew you were in a fight with him before his gloves were off and he was throwing hands.

Joey Kocur: “I respect everything Wendel Clark did and the way he played, his effort. I mean, he was one of the best bodycheckers, especially open ice, ever. He never turned down a fight. Probert and Wendel probably had three of four fights, and Wendel usually did poorly in them, but he always came back at him. For his size, and he was maybe 190 pounds, he was one of the best ever, as well. His shot, especially his wrist shot, was maybe the best in the league.”

  • @erics8033

I'm a DRW fan, but Wendel Clark was a Real Dude. He was not in Probert's class as a fighter but he was in Heart. He played for shitty Harold Ballard TML but still showed up, and he did not have much around him too step up after he did his fight. Clark did not have Joey Kocur and then Gerard Gallant to step in behind him.
