The most amazing thing was when I read Dave Semenko's book and he wrote I'll never fight Nick Fotiu because we are such good friends. I was shocked! One time Semenko tried to get agitator Neil Sheehy and Nick grabbed him and told Semenko to leave it alone and said he won't fight anyway and will just turtle. Semenko wrote 18,000 people got all excited thinking the two toughest guys are going to fight and I knew it would never happen that I liked Nicky too much! I was shocked! Nilan talks nice about Nick also! Amazing!
Dave Brown could have played any sport he wanted. He was a first class pitcher who was drafted by a mlb team. He was also our high school quarterback who could have done that as well if he put his mind to it. Great interview. Thanks to Knuckles for having him on.
Absolutely fucking awesome... That's the longest, and most in depth interview I've ever heard with the legendary Dave Brown.. It's great to hear his perspective & story, in a relaxed setting like this.. A couple weeks ago Knuckles had my favorite scrapper on -- Battling Jay Miller! These guys meant so much to their teammates, and their contributions deserve to be recognized...
Dave Brown and I were somewhat neighbors in rural So. Jersey… I’d see him around town, but only approached him twice… The first time was at the Pole Tavern Circle WaWa, in Elmer, NJ. Back then they sold lunch meat, Brownie had both hands full of lunch meat, and still stayed and talked hockey for about 45mins… He could’ve easily told me he had to go, but he didn’t… He was pretty talkative and honest, I’ll never forget that interaction, he is an awesome guy !!!
Hey Dave Brown ... if you ever read this, just want you to know how awesome it was being a Flyers fan back in the day with you on that team. Those loses to the Oilers KILLED me ... glad to hear how hard it was for you too. I feel like players in the NHL today don't play with that kind of team heart. Cheers to you ...

You have the best guests, love these podcasts! I’ve seen Craig Coxe talk about that fight with Dave Brown, I’m sure he would appreciate hearing that he regrets it.
Yeah that was nice to hear. I grew up in the Smyth 1985 and on - and that Craig Coxe was like a pit bull. He fought Joe Paterson if he smelled him on the ice. He got hit more than heavyweight I ever saw.. He was fearless maybe to a fault.
Love these so much. It’s also wonderful to see the human side of all these tough “70s” guys, my favorite is seeing Jay Milker and Chris Nolan’s friendship. So very cool….Dave Brown was one scary tough guy.
Sorry to hear about you wife Dave, devastating. Dave please don't let it bring you down. Everyone who ever took the time to love someone takes the risk. It is OK to be feel happy please don't dwell on it - we all will pass and someone is in your heart still with you moving forward.
you keep getting all these great Saskatchewan guys on. Used to see Brownie working out at The Field House in Saskatoon a long long time ago. What a player.
Great podcast! Yesterday the Flyers had an old timers game with the Bruins and I didn’t see Terry O’Reilly so I did a search and happened on to this. I love all the conversations and stories! A long time Flyer fan, all the respect in the world for Chris Nilan!
Very very interesting. This is a very good interview . Many thanks to Chris and the entire Team at Knuckles Podcast. Dave Brown is a very smart man . Top Notch !!!
Wow… lifelong Ranger fan , played competitively as a kid for a while. Loved Nilan when he was the Rangers , of course hated Brown when he was on Philly. Just a fabulous interview, respect for you two guys… Tim too!
What a treat this was. I was never a Flyer fan at all but Dave Brown is my favourite NHL tough guy of all time. He was simply the scariest fighter I ever saw play. Even more than Probert.
I don’t believe I ever heard an in-depth interview with Dave Brown. As a huge fan of all enforcers I enjoyed every second of this. On to the Domi episode!!!
Marcelin, sask! Im from that town. The Marcelin Knights had training camp on the slough cause the ice in the rink wasnt ready yet. Dave B played for the Saskatoon Quakers. I played for both of those teams in that league. Wild games in the 80's!
Brownie was fearsome. I didn't play hockey and I feared him when I went to get an autograph. Fortunately he was cool and friendly and signed my Flyers media guide. He didn't punch me.
Dave Brown was voted the most feared fighter by the NHL enforcers in the first edition of tough guys magazine. Great enforcers write books about their hockey fights encounters. What a fantastic interview. For those that don't know, Dave Brown is considered one of the absolute toughest to ever lace them up. Brownie was known for a very hard left hand. For the undersized Chris to get in a scrap with a shirtless and much larger Brown (thus having nothing to grab on) in a brawl where there are no linesman on the ice is one of the most courageous things witnessed on the ice. Also, Kudos to Brownie for acknowledging the Coxe fight. There is video of Coxe being interviewed about this fight and how Brown did get the jump on him. As a fan having seen that fight a number of times, I always wondered what they were saying to each other. Anyhow, really enjoying the podcasts Knuckles! Keep up the great work.
Thanks so much for this. It’s great to hear Brownie’s perspective on the current dumpster fire and how we’re going to get out of it. Knuckles had some great questions especially about the type of coaching and does it fit in today’s NHL. Thank God Brownie also supports Torts and thinks he is doing a good job. He is absolutely correct in that we became more competitive on Torts’ arrival.
Hooray! We finally hear from the terminator himself! Good job, fellas! Just wish Probie was still kicking and you guys could cover all the bases...Kocur is still around (hint)
Always a big Dave Brown fan and this interview ...one of the best interviews I have ever seen. Very insightful and informative on one of the most courageous gladiators ever to compete in any sport. I watched the entire hour and a half and loved every minute of it.
Didn’t know Knuckles had a podcast until just now. Luckily, my YT algorithm recommended this video, and it’s a beauty! Haven’t even looked at other episodes to see who’s been a guest, since I wanted to leave a comment to say how much I’m looking forward to it. Liked & subbed!🙂
Love that Northeastern jersey, Chris you were a couple years ahead of me, then I got to meet you when you brought a Catermaran sailboat to Hull MA and launched from the Bayside right near my Summer house
Spoke with Bob Kelly a few years back and asked who was the toughest fighter he went up against. Without hesitation he said Chris Nilan. Great interview with Brownie!
Great interview. Funny how these guys were the villains and it was personal (as a fan), years later every one of them is a great guy. I always wanted to see Brownie fight Beck or Fotiu

Awesome to see the respect between Chris and Dave. Great interview but I wish Chris had asked him about the process of the Flyers drafting Mishkov this year.
I’m going to try to say this in the most respectable way possible: Brown still has a sociopathic look and a laugh that puts me on edge. Those Manson-like eyes man. I’d put Brown at the top of the list of people I don’t ever want to cross paths with.

Great interview Chris. Would’ve loved to have heard his opinion on Jay Wells and their three fights in same game when Wells was an L.A. King. Jay got hammered pretty good in the last one but he was very tough on a team without much help. Wells became a Flyer after being a Ranger and not sure if was ever a teammate of Big Dave’s and how that works after being enemies. Guessing all is forgotten and now we’re on the same team??
I wish Knuckles could have scored more goals too...I loved it when Nilan contributed to the scoring. I remember one night in Montreal, Knuckles scored two goals against the Philadelphia Flyers. Great night.
Damn. I grew up thinking I was yzerman but loved when my dad would come try to take the ball away in the corner, I was 6-10 and always loved turning in to probert.
I love how there is no grudges held and the camaraderie of the gladiators! Love every one these awesome!
