    Love that enforcer mentality by both men. A Ranger tripped Keith Primeu before the faceoff, Probert is there to fight the guy in a blink. When two other Rangers try to fight off Probert, Probert starts to fight them both at the same time. Then Kocur pushes aside both his teammates so that he can have a proper fight with Probert.

Been a Ranger fan since '65 and it's true if they were tougher in 1970- 1974 they very well could have won a Cup or maybe two. When Smith added Joey to this group they might not have needed him, but I'm a firm believer in the saying, " you can never have too much speed or too much toughness." Fred Shero used to say about Dave Schultz, " Schultzy gave us courage on the road". Anyone can play tough at home but going into another teams Barn in the NHL is whole different ballgame. Joey (amoung others) did that for the Rangers.

    Probert and Kocur were like brothers to each other. They were both tough enforcers who played the game clean and stood up for their team and put their organization first and foremost. They fought each other because it was in their blood to instinctively protect and avenge their opponents' wrongdoings against their own teammates, and they just happened to have opposing jerseys on. Their fight was nothing personal between them. I'll be willing to bet any amount of money that they both sought each other out after this game was over, shook hands and hugged each other and then went out for a beer together, knowing full well and understanding that this situation could and would arise again when their teams played each other the next time.

    • @STEJTHEGREATEST
      @STEJTHEGREATEST 7 років тому +2

      Their primes occured at different times!!!!!!!!! In the mid-late eighties, Probie was beating fighters who beat Kocur, such as Craig Coxe, Bob McGill and Marty McSorley!!!!!!!!! Whereas towards the mid nineties, I'd say Kocur was probably better, as Probie was being pressured to come off his coke by the league and the Blackhawks, whilst Kocur was still throwing his recklessly hard punches with abandon, and terrorising the league!!!!!!! I'd say that by the late nineties, Probie was better again, as Kocur was realising his fists weren't indestructible, and Probie was always a better distance fighter than him!!!!!!!!! I don't remember ever seeing Kocur win a long fight against anyone!!!!!!!

      @@STEJTHEGREATEST Fighters had stretches in their careers where they fought better due to experience, physical strength and of course tactics and supplements we call them. Newer competition and Tie down rules could change any fighters performance to decline. As you've mentioned that Probert's cocaine usage came under control. He was probably less willing to get beat on. The pain meter escalated without cocaine in the system. The competition was getting bigger in size and more juiced up on roids! The old saying goes, every dog had its day. I believe that Probert's best years were from Jan 9,1991 too April 1994. He was also very good in the latter. 1987 1988 season. Kocur moved up too number 2 during the 1989-1990 season. Probert had issues with drugs and prison related problems and slipped to number 3. You are more than likely accurate with what you've put forward regarding who was better between them at the time frames you've indicated. Funny how Coxe dropped Kocur quickly. Coxe could fight with Probert all night long. Certain fighters had the other guys figured out I guess? I've watched this fight and believe it was a slight edge win for Kocur here.

    Is it me, or did Kocur hold back not wanting to land a full force right on his friend? He seemed to go through the motions. Proberts was/is my all time favorite fighter, but I saw a few chances where if Kocur had landed his jack hammer right on his friend, the outcome may have been different. If so, great respect on the part of Kocur
