Amazing how your garden has been becoming more and more beautiful; don't appreciate how much until you go back a couple of years. Don't get me wrong; this was gorgeous, too, but now is wow. And your greenhouse IS a Room of Requirements! It looked so much smaller in the beginning with less in it. Now you have full size plants, potting bins, and you and Kate in there swinging your respective cuppas around, and there is still room to work! Magical (I know it is ingenious use of space, but to us watching...)!

I never got more than a handful of blue berries for 3 yrs, then I bought another variety and put the pots close together in full sun. This year, I couldn't keep up with them, they were so prolific. 😁👍
Yup, they produce much better when there are at least two different varieties growing in the same garden fairly close together. And, it can take 3 or 4 years before they reach their stride production wise. Patience. Oh, and maples in general do not object to being limbed up a few feet as they grow. In the wild the lower branches tend to die off as the tree matures and grows. In the wild they grow to around 50' but a red maple is a cultured tree. But they are not a bush! Trim your red maple up (As in not off the top! They can be shaped a bit but its not meant to be a topiary.) by taking off the lower twigs and small branches as it grows and stay on this until the tree reaches 20' or so and you will have a lovely and sturdy shade tree, that's limbed up to about 6', for the car and passers by without it poking anyone's eye out. And it won't be in anyone's way. I'm Canajun, eh, and know a few things about maples.
Hi Great video We only been here year and I did so much in the garden design it. I have patio area with my fruits growing. I have small wildlife pound with wild plants. Then have my herb and veg places. Also my new green house and tool shed. Still be lots to do next spring as am going move stuff around

What a great video! I love the idea of focussing on each area of the garden in turn - I think if I had to pick a couple of favourites (although it's impossible to choose!), it would be the Sitooterie and The Beer Garden! I don't really have much symmetry in my garden spaces, preferring a certain amount of wild chaos! 😂, but there is something very calming about the Beer Garden, with the chairs and bird boxes etc. I can see why you love to sit there on a sunny evening! You have also highlighted the importance of your view from the house - it's so nice to see a spot of greenery or colour from the windows on a dreary winter day! As ever, your bubbly personality makes your videos so enjoyable Eli, and its lovely to see Kate waving to us all while you're filming 😊.
I do love the sitooterie too but it's also sad as we don't get to really use it as much as we'd like. But the beer garden.... we're just there all summer - it's our happy place. and it's also where we got married, maybe I should have reminded you guys of that :D

Thanks so much! 😊 Yeah we realised that not everyone had the same idea of our garden, some thought we had a huge plot of land in the country, some thought it was just a veg garden some thought it was tiny.... so this way we can actually show. Also though, I didn't quite get across what I wanted which was the choices and how they affect things and why... for instance our garden looks HUGE in the overhead because we have a lot of unused space (like the lawn) and smaller flowerbeds against the fence.... but if we did traditional deep flower beds it would actually look a lot smaller because the open space would be reduced. The size of a garden is very much judged on the space you use...
Hi Eli. I grow orange crocosmia too. No need to collect seeds to propagate, as they are tubers. Every 2-3 years in spring, just before new growth starts, I dig the crocosmia, tubers up, split them into two or three smaller bunches and replant/ gift some. It's almost impossible to kill them. 😀
Oh very close.... they grow into corms (nit quite tubers). But yes once you have clumps of plants you can split and divide the clumps like a hell of a lot of things jn the garden. But collecting seeds speeds this up for me because I have baby plants the next season which will grow and naturalise etc but it's just a wee bit quicker with less luck needed 😀

As always great video. Love the M.D. spoof with names :-) You were saying about ideally wanting deeper trays for winter growing, I saw a video which was really useful showing use of used plastic mushroom trays which you line with newspaper sides and bottom. They are twice the depth of grow trays and a useful size for greenhouse staging. They are really cheap, I paid £8 for 4 from ebay. They stack when not in use. They are working well so far.
Lovely video Eli (and Kate 😉). The pak choi looks fabulous mine never got that large but that’s ok I’ll try again next year. I just took my onions like those and put the entire little bunches in the ground because I thought if I forget to water mid winter they’d die and if I watered then the soil in the little pots froze they’d die so best option was overwinter in bunches outside. I have no heat in my green house so I’m pretty much done sowing for this year. Thank you for sharing ✌️🇨🇦🐝 safe ladies

When we moved to Scotland in the 70’s our first house was called Sunny Corner… within a short time the locals re named it Funny Corner! My parents were slightly hippy with a definite “Good Life” Tom and Barbara vibe :-) I will let you decide… Sunny or Funny?
Hiya Eli and Kate I'm waving at you both. That's a great idea with the growbag trays planting salad crops in them. I've written that on my to do list once the greenhouse is up. Am I right in thinking you wont be bubble wrapping yours this year? My onions are doing really well and so is my 99p garlic but the £11 garlic hasn't took at all yet. I'm hoping its busy making roots. Great video, hope yous have a good week.
I would say the garlic isn't a bad thjng... nice big shots might get damaged by frost so better if uts outt the work into the roots just now and shoots above ground when it's strong. I'll tell Kate you're waving 😀
Lovely video, I love the way you have different areas and I am impressed by how neat and tidy it is. We plan to move next year so your ideas about garden design are really helpful. Just a thought about the straw mulch on your garlic and onions, I did that last year and the bulbs and roots stayed too damp and developed white rot, so it might be worth it look into alternative mulching for that bed.
Too damp isn't a problem for me because I've created all. my soil mixes to suit where they are and obviously our climate here in my garden. Wee note on white rot though, it's not caused by damp or even wet, it's actually a fungal infection so please be careful if you've seen it in your garden, it's very very easy to spread (just a trowel or glove that's touches that soil will do it or even very dry soil blown by the wind) and will spread to areas that are very dry. I've been lucky and it's never been a problem for me, but I've seen the devastation it can cause for other folk and it's nasty 😂😂😂
@@eliandkate I think it can be exacerbated by cool wet summers, and I didn’t have any white rot until I did the straw mulch thing so now I am being very careful!

Really enjoyed your garden tour Eli. This year I inherited several Acers from my Dad - he loved them. He used to tell me that in Autumn when the sunlight hit one of them it looked like it was ablaze. Two weeks ago I was in my garden just at the time the sun hit this acer and it was spectacular! It was the first time I’d seen it. I took a photo although it doesn’t do it justice. The chairs in your beer garden - are they wooden or plastic please? They look very comfortable - especially for a shortie like me. I’ve also seen some online with a footstool. Where are yours from please? Many thanks.
They are plastic.... our original ones were wooden but they always rotted so we've gone for something longer lasting this time. I'll hunt out the link for you... I need a footstool or chunk of wood cause I'm too short but we've got those left from our last chairs 😀
Looks like a Cotinus Royal Smoke Bush. I had one until a bloke crashed his van into my fence and it snapped, never came back .... popped another in its place and it never ever took again. Think because I had to re concrete new posts and I'm wondering if the light conditions changed as I went from vertical to horizontal fencing. But its a gorgeous shrub x
Its funny you've had trouble with Blueberries. I had nay luck with them either this year too. Going to try grow a Honey Berry next year instead...there's a Scottish Honey Berry variety ill try, hoping being as its native, it will take. probably don't taste anything like a Blueberries but they look similar well, the fruits a bit longer.
Yeah they are interesting. Not native to Scotland but to Siberia so should cope well in our climate I'd think... as long as you give it really good drainage
Very interesting seeing how you deal with the challenges of your weather patterns, I live at the other end of the country in Cornwall, wind is a problem here but hard frosts are rare. My greenhouse is only 4x6 but I have a raised bed for winter lettuce,and tomatoes and cucumber in summer, also I overwinter a potted Bougainville in there so far it’s lasted 5 years and flowers well. I would love to rearrange my veg beds but as my husband and I are in our mid seventies building new beds is a bit beyond us. I’m the gardener he’s structure. Some part of one of my beds gets little sun do you think rhubarb would grow there? I would really appreciate your advice on that. I’ve only recently found your channel but I am now binge watching and really enjoying your videos.
Hey Lynda, well they say rhubarb needs sun or partial shade so it might be worth trying. You can always move it if it sulks :D The main thing is good rich free draining soil. It's a hungry plant :D
how did you paint the strawberry corner after it was installed? sprayed? i wouldn't have wanted to handle it during construction as it'd smell too much. I think you installed these in their raw form? I am in Oly, WA, the PNW and obsessing over my first greenhouse selection. Thanks for sharing

technically it's not a walled garden, the names for the areas are all little gardening jokes about making my garden sound bigger :D a walled garden is a traditional older style idea, where basically a lot of kitchen gardens etc in the big houses were in walled areas to protect them from the wind chill and the added benefit of the wall was that it soaked up heat from the sun during the day and let it out when it got colder in the evening, so they were great for growing fruit trees against. Not sure what you are asking about in terms of building or buying?

OK I'm still not sure what you mean - remembering that this is an old video now :D I'm guessing maybe you mean the strawberries? That's the pallet planter we spoke about earlier in the video, we build that out of a couple of old pallets. So maybe yeah that’s what you mean?
I'm a quarter way through video and I suggest vegging out corner for your old strawberry area. And sadly I planted elephant garlic 6 weeks ago and not one shoot so far 🤨

It depends on the type of clematis. Ours flowers early, meaningnit isn't one that needs to be printed. Other that flower in summer onwards get cut back to encourage new growth.
Love the vertical spaces you have with the pallets, such a good idea. I wish I could do that and whilst I have the space, in have no idea as to what I would grow as I dont like blackberries, strawberries etc! 😱 I know, terrible isnt it? Any ideas as to what I could grow in there?
Oh there’s bound to be something. What kind of things do you like, or you could even make it something attractive, like a clematis or wall flower? Productive, you could espalier apples or pears?
Also what supplies do u use for filling and mulching the bed.. I am trying my hands in growing veg having inspiration from all UK youtuvers 😁 will be easy to order and set up like to like when learning..
I make my own compost so that's what I use in all my beds and pots. I use different mulch materials depending on what I want to do, but again gor you covered there's a whe video on mulch ... I even tell you in this video about the previous video on mulch lol

I think it's a couple feet... wasn't anything scientific just enough space to get between them. If you were doing bigger beds.... you might want enough space for a wheel barrow.
I have a tiny garden, two veggie squares in corners, a brassica strip. I’m planning to put arches over that to grow peas and beans, and I’ve had to invest in a wheelbarrow to move compost around (back strain) so intend to leave enough room between things to manoeuvre it. I’m going to try to grow veg in pots next year, more room for flowers and perennial in ground. I want colour in my garden.
Guessing you mean that questions for me as Kate did her planning using pen and paper. The video using an app (which is linked in the video descriptionand has all the info in it) was called little blue printer. Not sure if its still available these days but there will be something similar.
What size of timber did u use for the bed hinged frame pls? Also where can I get the black fittings u used on the frame to slot in the blue hoops pls.. I am struggling to find similar.. The timber is usually what ever we have lying around just cut to the lengths needed so I don't know the specs I'm afraid. As to details if the fittings. I've got a whole video on building it 😀 search back through the raised beds videos and you'll find it. The bits came from quickcrop uk

I don't really have much symmetry in my garden spaces, preferring a certain amount of wild chaos! 😂, but there is something very calming about the Beer Garden, with the chairs and bird boxes etc. I can see why you love to sit there on a sunny evening! You have also highlighted the importance of your view from the house - it's so nice to see a spot of greenery or colour from the windows on a dreary winter day! As ever, your bubbly personality makes your videos so enjoyable Eli, and its lovely to see Kate waving to us all while you're filming 😊.
I do love the sitooterie too but it's also sad as we don't get to really use it as much as we'd like. But the beer garden.... we're just there all summer - it's our happy place. and it's also where we got married, maybe I should have reminded you guys of that :D

Thanks so much! 😊 Yeah we realised that not everyone had the same idea of our garden, some thought we had a huge plot of land in the country, some thought it was just a veg garden some thought it was tiny.... so this way we can actually show. Also though, I didn't quite get across what I wanted which was the choices and how they affect things and why... for instance our garden looks HUGE in the overhead because we have a lot of unused space (like the lawn) and smaller flowerbeds against the fence.... but if we did traditional deep flower beds it would actually look a lot smaller because the open space would be reduced. The size of a garden is very much judged on the space you use...

Hi Eli. I grow orange crocosmia too. No need to collect seeds to propagate, as they are tubers. Every 2-3 years in spring, just before new growth starts, I dig the crocosmia, tubers up, split them into two or three smaller bunches and replant/ gift some. It's almost impossible to kill them. 😀
Oh very close.... they grow into corms (nit quite tubers). But yes once you have clumps of plants you can split and divide the clumps like a hell of a lot of things jn the garden. But collecting seeds speeds this up for me because I have baby plants the next season which will grow and naturalise etc but it's just a wee bit quicker with less luck needed 😀
I've no idea what the difference is between a corm and a tuber 😳. I just know they grow pretty things 😀
And that there is the most important part 😀😀😀😀

Fabulous video with lots of inspiration for me…getting my greenhouse in January just in time for a new season 😁. You do actually get indoor and outdoor cyclamen so double check if you are buying any. I know our garden centre sells both.

As always great video. Love the M.D. spoof with names :-) You were saying about ideally wanting deeper trays for winter growing, I saw a video which was really useful showing use of used plastic mushroom trays which you line with newspaper sides and bottom. They are twice the depth of grow trays and a useful size for greenhouse staging. They are really cheap, I paid £8 for 4 from ebay. They stack when not in use. They are working well so far.

Lovely video Eli (and Kate 😉). The pak choi looks fabulous mine never got that large but that’s ok I’ll try again next year. I just took my onions like those and put the entire little bunches in the ground because I thought if I forget to water mid winter they’d die and if I watered then the soil in the little pots froze they’d die so best option was overwinter in bunches outside. I have no heat in my green house so I’m pretty much done sowing for this year. Thank you for sharing ✌️🇨🇦🐝 safe ladies

This is the 3rd video of yours I have seen, but after many years of watching gardening youtube videos (trying to get mine started) your video is the best I have come across. Its a very long video, but so informative. Being romantic the West Milands in eng.this video has given me quite a few ideas, love the innovative raised beds with hinged covers. We'll done.

I didn't like skimmia plants, but can see the way you used it to fill that spot/gap (I too have a crocismia so it much be on the north facing side). I would say the garlic isn't a bad thjng... nice big shots might get damaged by frost so better if uts outt the work into the roots just now and shoots above ground when it's strong. I'll tell Kate you're waving 😀
Lovely video, I love the way you have different areas and I am impressed by how neat and tidy it is. We plan to move next year so your ideas about garden design are really helpful. Just a thought about the straw mulch on your garlic and onions, I did that last year and the bulbs and roots stayed too damp and developed white rot, so it might be worth it look into alternative mulching for that bed.
Too damp isn't a problem for me because I've created all. my soil mixes to suit where they are and obviously our climate here in my garden. Wee note on white rot though, it's not caused by damp or even wet, it's actually a fungal infection so please be careful if you've seen it in your garden, it's very very easy to spread (just a trowel or glove that's touches that soil will do it or even very dry soil blown by the wind) and will spread to areas that are very dry. I've been lucky and it's never been a problem for me, but I've seen the devastation it can cause for other folk and it's nasty 😂😂😂
@@eliandkate I think it can be exacerbated by cool wet summers, and I didn’t have any white rot until I did the straw mulch thing so now I am being very careful!

Really enjoyed your garden tour Eli. This year I inherited several Acers from my Dad - he loved them. He used to tell me that in Autumn when the sunlight hit one of them it looked like it was ablaze. Two weeks ago I was in my garden just at the time the sun hit this acer and it was spectacular! It was the first time I’d seen it. I took a photo although it doesn’t do it justice. The chairs in your beer garden - are they wooden or plastic please? They look very comfortable - especially for a shortie like me. I’ve also seen some online with a footstool. Where are yours from please? Many thanks.
They are plastic.... our original ones were wooden but they always rotted so we've gone for something longer lasting this time. I'll hunt out the link for you... I need a footstool or chunk of wood cause I'm too short but we've got those left from our last chairs 😀

Looks like a Cotinus Royal Smoke Bush. I had one until a bloke crashed his van into my fence and it snapped, never came back .... popped another in its place and it never ever took again. Think because I had to re concrete new posts and I'm wondering if the light conditions changed as I went from vertical to horizontal fencing. But its a gorgeous shrub x

Its funny you've had trouble with Blueberries. I had nay luck with them either this year too. Going to try grow a Honey Berry next year instead...there's a Scottish Honey Berry variety ill try, hoping being as its native, it will take. probably don't taste anything like a Blueberries but they look similar well, the fruits a bit longer.
Yeah they are interesting. Not native to Scotland but to Siberia so should cope well in our climate I'd think... as long as you give it really good drainage

Have you tried the double primrose (primlets) they are absolutely beautiful. I have learnt to appreciate the wallflower and tulip combination.

Very interesting seeing how you deal with the challenges of your weather patterns, I live at the other end of the country in Cornwall, wind is a problem here but hard frosts are rare. My greenhouse is only 4x6 but I have a raised bed for winter lettuce,and tomatoes and cucumber in summer, also I overwinter a potted Bougainville in there so far it’s lasted 5 years and flowers well. I would love to rearrange my veg beds but as my husband and I are in our mid seventies building new beds is a bit beyond us. I’m the gardener he’s structure. Some part of one of my beds gets little sun do you think rhubarb would grow there? I would really appreciate your advice on that. I’ve only recently found your channel but I am now binge watching and really enjoying your videos.

well they say rhubarb needs sun or partial shade so it might be worth trying. You can always move it if it sulks :D
The main thing is good rich free draining soil. It's a hungry plant :D
how did you paint the strawberry corner after it was installed? sprayed? i wouldn't have wanted to handle it during construction as it'd smell too much. I think you installed these in their raw form? I am in Oly, WA, the PNW and obsessing over my first greenhouse selection. Thanks for sharing
Just painted it with a brush the same as we paint the fences etc.

technically it's not a walled garden, the names for the areas are all little gardening jokes about making my garden sound bigger :D
a walled garden is a traditional older style idea, where basically a lot of kitchen gardens etc in the big houses were in walled areas to protect them from the wind chill and the added benefit of the wall was that it soaked up heat from the sun during the day and let it out when it got colder in the evening, so they were great for growing fruit trees against.

I'm guessing maybe you mean the strawberries? That's the pallet planter we spoke about earlier in the video, we build that out of a couple of old pallets. So maybe yeah that’s what you mean?
How about car bonnet arms from a Breakers Yard to hold up those veg garden lids on hinges?

It depends on the type of clematis. Ours flowers early, meaningnit isn't one that needs to be printed. Other that flower in summer onwards get cut back to encourage new growth.

Love the vertical spaces you have with the pallets, such a good idea. I wish I could do that and whilst I have the space, in have no idea as to what I would grow as I dont like blackberries, strawberries etc! 😱 I know, terrible isnt it? Any ideas as to what I could grow in there?
Oh there’s bound to be something. What kind of things do you like, or you could even make it something attractive, like a clematis or wall flower? Productive, you could espalier apples or pears?
Also what supplies do u use for filling and mulching the bed.. I am trying my hands in growing veg having inspiration from all UK youtuvers 😁 will be easy to order and set up like to like when learning..
I make my own compost so that's what I use in all my beds and pots. I use different mulch materials depending on what I want to do, but again gor you covered there's a whe video on mulch ... I even tell you in this video about the previous video on mulch lol

I think it's a couple feet... wasn't anything scientific just enough space to get between them. If you were doing bigger beds.... you might want enough space for a wheel barrow.

I have a tiny garden, two veggie squares in corners, a brassica strip. I’m planning to put arches over that to grow peas and beans, and I’ve had to invest in a wheelbarrow to move compost around (back strain) so intend to leave enough room between things to manoeuvre it. I’m going to try to grow veg in pots next year, more room for flowers and perennial in ground. I want colour in my garden.
I know the back strain thing. That's why we switched to higher beds. Means we can keep gardening.

Guessing you mean that questions for me as Kate did her planning using pen and paper. The video using an app (which is linked in the video descriptionand has all the info in it) was called little blue printer. Not sure if its still available these days but there will be something similar.

What size of timber did u use for the bed hinged frame pls? Also where can I get the black fittings u used on the frame to slot in the blue hoops pls.. I am struggling to find similar.. Live in UK 😊 and am a great fan to see ur videos for the fun, light hearted Scottish accent which I miss having moved to London from Glasgow few years back..
The timber is usually what ever we have lying around just cut to the lengths needed so I don't know the specs I'm afraid. As to details if the fittings. I've got a whole video on building it 😀 search back through the raised beds videos and you'll find it. The bits came from quickcrop uk
