This is the new, new VW Turbo Beetle Coupe. It's been beefed up to look tougher and has been upgraded with lots of up-scale trim bits and features. It's fun to drive for sure...but, is the new look
Bought a 2017 Beetle 1.8 TSI with a salvage title with the intention to flip it. Car hit an animal on right side and had 10k miles. I put two fenders on it and fixed the right side mirror and ended up having $8700 in it after all repairs. I put it up for sale and not one person contacted me. I went and got a stage 1 tune for it and immediately pulled the ad down after that. This car is an absolute blast and is so much fun. For the money i paid for this car I will just hang on to it and enjoy it. It hangs out at triple digit speeds with little effort and will smoke most cars on the road...it is a total sleeper. Great interior, great infotainment system, heated seats and mirrors, and yes a quiet ride. I flip a lot of cars and this is hands down one of my favorites so I am not sure why all the hate on these Beetles.
To be honest I'll bet it has to do with the salvage title. Any car being sold with a salvage title is legally required to have a mention that it has a salvage title in the advertisement. It is by law a requirement to tell anybody looking to purchase the vehicle that it has a savage title. Unfortunately this may be the reason that you did not sell the car. That being said I do agree that Beatles are A-blast to drive I've had 2 of them and I'm currently upgrading to a 2018 2.0L Volkswagen beetle next week.
"Car feels like it's doing exactly what It's supposed to do" Yes I feel this way in my Volkswagen as well. I plan to continue to go with VW, joy to drive, maintain, even fill up. Feels like a friend to me so often!
I think it is very much a unisex car now......I admit to owning a 1.4 TSI which I thoroughly love and it draws a lot of positive comments.
We have the 13 Turbo convertible - automatic with steering wheel paddle shift.
This is a fun car - catches rubber in 1/2 gear.
I as well bought this car as my wife wanted one.
My observation is that it mimics the Porsche shape.
Love the new bug and the style is unique and doesn't look like every other car on the road...
I've had Mustangs, Camaros all of my life, I love the Beetle R line, 100%

I just purchased my 7th vw BEETLE. A TURBO this time. Yes The BEETLE is a Girly car. And I do have my bud vase. I have my flower.

I agree with Stewart Rood. It is very much a unisex car. I have a Toffee Brown 1.4 TSI NZ new 2014 Model with a creme/beige interior. It’s a head turner and a real looker. Never selling it…..I had 2 of the Barbie Beetles and loved them……not a man’s car by any means but I love anything Beetle so I defend them. Great review. Beau
Thanks for watching and taking a moment to comment. I did love the look of this car... it is very handsome in this trim. But my feelings at the time and especially driving it to work and seeing the reaction of all the construction worker type dudes gave me an interesting perspective into the "vibe" of the car. I thoroughly enjoyed the way it drove but got frustrated with many of the mechanical gremlins this thing had.

To put a label on the Beetle like, "It's a chic car" really shows one's stupidity. Anybody who wants to own one, can. If you're a dude, just don't put flower stickers on it. When the Ford Probe first came onto the scene, Ford was planning on aiming primarily at females for sales, but guess what, mostly guys bought them. So if anybody says the Beelte is a chick car, it's because they're listening to what other people are saying and letting them make up their weak mind for them. I'm going to be getting a 2005 New Beetle, and I'm going to take it to a tuning shop near me make it like a badda$$ rally car, sans all of the sponsor stickers. Should be able to get it to just over three hundred HP. Eat that!

had one of those as a rental. it wasn't the turbo charged but it was the most fun to drive car I've driven in a while. I drove it from San Diego to LA and back and yes it was awesome on the gas.
wait till the repair bills start rolling in. ask anyone whose owned a new beetle after the warranty period has expired.
my favorite built in defect is the dual mass flywheel.
My brothers gf has a 2001 beetle and its soon slow. She can floor it and we are going like 30

I know cars with less hp stock and they are still slow. She has to floor it to go up hills at reasonable speeds.
Good choice and my favorite car color of all time! If it were for me that is exactly what I would choose...loved the fun factor of the Mustang. We thought about the diesel and making a retro new bug just like you said but the diesels weren't out yet so we got the sporty one.

I has this car.. 2013 wolkswagen beetle turbo, premium packaged. This car is beautiful I got it in blue, its got sport mode, and paddle shifters. My mom got it for me as a graduation gift.. and I totaled it 2 weeks later..
I got in my car after school, it had rained the night before, and my friend has a BMW m3, and he decided it would be funny if he tail gated me. he cut me off and brake checked me. when i slammed on my brakes my car skided and i slammed into a parked car... yup im no longer friends with him. he also left the scene of the accident.

This guy is clearly not european and the unit of measurement isn't the torque itself it's the lb-ft of it so it should NEVER be used as a plural. 207 "pound-feet" of torque is the proper plural usage. Every car geek and mechanic should know this.

Like always, an amazing review!!. I see what you mean though. The beetle is nice on the eyes, (even to a guy like me) and it's elegant actually. Especially with the white paint, it seems perfectly balanced, but once again, beetles are known for being a chicks car...
Are you considering doing more reviews? I always click them as soon as you post one. You periodically do one and i ALWAYS love them. I always like to hear as to what you have to say and those canyon roads are absolutely beautiful.
Yeah, I had a 62 rag top with a built 1835cc engine...boy did I love that bug! The Maverick is still sitting outside and not looking good at this point, still trying to figure it all out.

I drove it to the shop where I work and the rest of the dudes that work there all felt the same...."hmm it looks real good but I would never own one" They wouldn't even let me put them on camera to talk about it.
I got one in spite of my wife, not because of her lol. They are a great deal on the used market and easy to hop up.
If that thing was AWD or rear wheel drive...there would be NO debate...pure awesome and I would be on it like ugly on a gorilla!
I didn't know some new Beetles came in 6 speed manual transmission - only seen the 5 speed manuals.
Chip it. Get a stage 1 program and you'll have more fun. Call up Alvin at Borla and he can make an exhaust for you. Mad respect for your wife. 6MT on the 405. My passat wagon 2.0t 6MT is also a fun grocery getter
As always VW's rule!!!!! iv'e got a couple of them air cooled and water cooled.. I thought I would never buy a water cooled beetle but I did!!! I own 2003 turbo with a few small changes (wink wink) and I love it.... my friends said to me why did you buy a girly car till I took them for a drive and they were surprized.. but I do not like the new beetle's they look like a super bug to me which I think they look ugly but maybe they might grow on me LOL.. and always VW's RULE!!!!!!!

So what is your all time favorite car you have drove on the canyon road so far?
I have the base model turbo but dual clutch auto transmission . It's a nice car but little things are going wrong . The gauge group on the dash has warped and the ignition key gets jammed easily . This before it was a year old . I've had recent model Jettas and have had problems with them . I'm concerned about long term reliability as it only has 36,000 mile warranty .Not sure if I want to keep it .
Any update on the car?

HP and torque are the same thing. Engines produce torque. HP is essentially torque with respect to time. You need to state both when discribing performance as an engines torque tends to vary based on rpms. Depending on the cams used or if its supercharged. Stating HP alone is meaningless, so is stating torque because it does give you a complete picture of the engines performance. One isn't more important than the other, and you can't seperate the two. Yo can't have a 10ftlb car that makes 100hp. Unless its reving some ridiculous amount like 52520 rpms lol

Nice review! For the most part, I agree with your take on the car. I have a 12' Turbo Beetle, base model with manual in Reef Blue. Fun car, but yep, I miss my rear wheel drive 10' Challenger big time....and look forward to trading the Bug in soon for Ram Hemi 4X4. To really wake the engine up, word has it APR Stage 1 is the way to go....but will likely void engine warranty. Check out VW Vortex for good info....and Google VW Vortex Super Beetle project car...AWD, 500 Hp!!!

No, the engine used to be a 1.8t but now it's a 2.0t
The 2013 turbo model was the only model to have the 2.0, and the 2013 sport had a 2.5.
2012 has a 2.0 turbo.

The reason why is money. Enthusiasts don't buy cars like these because a. Can't afford it, b. The ones that can would buy a evolution, gti, some Turbo BMW etc. People who buy beetles buy them because they are cute, hence the reason its still considered a chicks car, and why its not as aggressive as the golf. That said most chiçk cars are fantastic. A Porsche boxster is a chick car, but it will make many grown men cry in the right hands and with a few tweaks.
