This was the most heart wrenching storyline. The acting and emotion was absolutely top notch. When Tommy said "Look dad I packed all of my stuff", and then Eric sits him down and tells him he can't adopt him was heartbreaking. Will Friedle was such an underrated actor.
These two are so cute. 🥰 You can see how much they truly love each other and how devastated Eric and Tommy were when Eric had to give the chance to adopt Tommy so he could a better life with his new family. It's so bittersweet.
After this episode, after Tommy left the show, Eric lost his fkng mind. This episode was the catalyst of him essentially turning into a cartoon character. I get why he didn’t adopt Tommy, but still, damn this hurt.
This was a powerful moment of maturity and kindness Eric did, the writers turning him into comic relief afterwards always felt a step backwards for him. If anything I hoped he study to be a social worker or help other children find good families
You can tell that Eric loved Tommy like a brother, or son. That he genuinely loved taking care of Tommy. The easiest way to know this is by the way Eric wasn't the same after Tommy said goodbye

They writers not having Eric adopt Tommy was such a mistake. After that they just completely forgot he existed and made Eric an even bigger doofus. Like all the work they put into his development and he lost it all

On top of that Eric had no job, no future plans, and no where to stay. So he decided it wasn’t right for him to adopt Tommy if he didn’t have what he needed.
