I bought a twelve string guitar because of this song. It was a Lyle Hummingbird, and made in Japan. I grew up with Michael Nesmith, George Harrison, and those guys, but I friggin got to meet Michael Nesmith! I’ve still got that damn 12 string. 😂🤠

Yep. That about sums it up. Sunday night at The Chapel was magical. I know I'll never forget it - especially that version of Joanne.

I was a bit too old to be a Monkees fan, though several of their songs were catchy, but I happened to read a glowing review of a Michael Nesmith solo show at a New York club, and decided to go check him out. At this time there was little to no interest in ex-Monkees, and it was a small club with not many people in attendance.
Nesmith was as good as the reviewer had said, with a great voice and impeccable taste in songs, many of which he had written. Between sets, he sat at the bar by himself, so my friend and I went and sat with him, and had a great chat. We ended up inviting him out to our place, and he gave us info on where he was staying so we could contact him. For some reason long forgotten, we decided not to follow up, but for the next several years I'd pick up each of his First National Band albums, and they were full of great tunes. I wish they'd been more successful so I'd have had the chance to see him with the full band.

That is the old Red Rhodes there - after all this time. Incredible. Fantastic. Still around. Err, hang on, no it is not. [ quick wikipedia check ]. Red Rhodes passed away in 1995. But the individual on the steel guitar does look of sufficient seniority to have been him. Could be that wikipedia is full of mis-reports and it could yet still be him ?.

It was the worst concert mix I've ever heard. As I left I bumped into my friend who does sound at the Freight in Berkeley, and he agreed, the sound was atrocious.

Ben Gibbard can't sing, can"t hit the high notes. He practically ruined the song. I don't get why MN thinks so highly of him, sorry. I also really hate the Chapel. He should've played the GAMH.

Don't be sorry, Mary, you're entitled to your opinion! I'm just curious though - were you there or are you just viewing it for the first time here? I was fortunate enough to be there and thought the song - especially with Ben's voice - was the highlight of an incredible evening. It's almost as if the song was written for his voice (except he wasn't born yet in 1970). What do you think about The Independent? It's a little bigger than The Chapel and has fantastic sound.

Maybe you know her. Can one really have a conversation with such a negative nanny?
