Can I just say that watching this (I love your channel by the way) all the way from Australia gave me the knowledge I needed tonight to keep going. I was about to give up trying to create these types of awesome signs as my new little business venture because of the bleeding under the Mylar reusable stencils. But I re-watched your technique in this video and tried again and guess what, it turned out perfect. So thank you from the bottom of my heart for your guidance, knowledge and your decision to share your wonderful techniques. I love your videos, thank you. Xx
What a brilliant tip - using the background colour first. I've only stencilled once before and because of the amount of bleeding I got, I swore never to stencil again. Watching this video has made me decide to give it another go. Thank you. :)
Thank you for the great advice! My lettering bled all the time even when I used Mod Podge, but I used your tips and my lettering was perfect for the first time ever.
Sorry to be off topic but does anyone know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account..? I somehow forgot my account password. I appreciate any tips you can give me.
@Bryant Fisher I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and im trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Thanks for sharing, I just want to do wood sign for my home and after getting frustrated to try everything in my stencil projects without bleeding, I discovered you and yes 😎 you made my day. you have a new subscriber
I'm so grateful for this tip for painting signs with no bleeding! I have been searching for an answer to this issue I have been having! Thank you for sharing what you have learned. I am planning to do a few shows next year and sale items online and have learned so much from watching your videos! Thank you for helping me improve my skills and hopefully I will have success in my endeavors!
Super Awesome Tips 👍👍👍. I have tons of stencils for signs and was always intimated for fear of bleed through. Now you know I'll be making some!! Thanks for sharing the details and great tutorial!!!
Good evening Elysia As always great advice. I know know how to at least prevent alot of bleed through. I hope to put it to the test one day this week. Thanks again. Always a joy to watch your channel.
Wow, I would have never thought about sealing the font with the background color, that’s definitely going to change the way I do my signs, ty very much
Girl I wish you were my BFF AND next door neighbor, we would have so much fun and bouncing creativity with each other! Been watching your vids awhile now but never posted anything......Luv your attitude and creativity! Keep’m coming!
Thanks so much for the tips on stenciling. Everything I make is so stinking cute [to me) lol but I mess up the stenciling every time. This just might be to tip I needed. You are talented for sure.
I love watching you, I am a teacher so always looking for projects, inspiration and ideas to use in my class. The giveaway of cameo silhouette, I’m so excited, just thinking of what I would do if I won the cameo, I’d go crazy personalizing all of their items, make the thanksgiving shirts, Xmas shirt, so much!!! I liked, comment and shared!!! I pray you get tons of viewers and they get hooked because I am!!! Love it!!! My favorite project from trash to treasure #1 was the coat rack!!! So gorgeous, I wish I had your talent !!!
Do you have a good tip to prevent bleeding when you’re working with an individual alphabet stencil? This method would take a really long time having to wait for each letter to dry before moving on to the next. Thanks
Hey Elysia, I really like the idea of using the background colour first to prevent bleeding. What if the background was just a stain? What would you recommend to prevent bleeding? Thanks!
I find an acrylic paint that is very close to the color of my stain and use that to seal the edges first, let dry, then move on to the color of the words.
I thought you used the English spelling of favourite to match your last name. I love all your signs with the different fonts. If I had any room to put signs, I’d be ordering them off your Etsy store.
So sorry new crafter here :) ANy idea how to hold down a plastic stencil from Hobby Lobby? Put contact paper over it to stick it down maybe? Thank you looking forward to seeing your videos,
Oh when oh when can I buy a Silhouette?.... and I LOVE are Canadian as I am Australian and of course we spell favourite with a u too. Oh, and staying home is my favourite too. Colour, theatre, litre...
i knew English speaking countries in Europe have different spellings, but I had NO idea Canadians spelled words differently than Americans, so you just blew my mind 🤯
I know this is a few months late, but using the makeup sponges is INGENIOUS !!!!! I’m so happy I found you! By chance, do you reuse the sponges? I washed mine out and was going to keep it for the same paint color, in this case black. I’m just wondering your process!! Thanks so much
You can rinse them and reuse several times! I have even rinsed them and then tossed them in one of the mess washing bass in the washing machine before!!
@@ElysiaEnglish Thanks so much for responding so quickly. Thats great to know. I still can't believe the difference that sponge and painting the first coat in the same color of the background!!! Brilliant!
Hey Gal! It looked like you did 2 coats of your background color before the yellow. Just wanted to confirm. One light coat of background color still gives me bleeding.
Have you done wood signs using wood stain instead of pain for the background? Just wondering if you would use the same technique with stain (going over the letters with the background colour first)
Is this the SAME method I would use if my stencil is a REUSABLE one? Not sure if this is a silly question but I am going to be stenciling for the first time ever and have no prior experience to work with. My project is Christmas Porch Signs. Second question: what if you're STAINING the wood rather than PAINTING it? Do you have a tutorial to avoid bleeding on stained rather than PAINTED wood? Thanks kindly for any advice you can give me. Newbie here, although you've probably figured that out! LOL Nice work BTW!!! SOOOO glad to hear you are living your dream. I'm trying to accomplish that same vision but I'm MUCH older than you. Oh well... better late than NEVER! Sending best wishes to you on your journey from Abbotsford, BC.
Danille Illyasaville if your painting a multi coloured background, where she’s adding her base colour to prevent bleeding you use mod podge which dries clear
Hello Elysia, can you put these design that you are painting on now outside ! I have a project that I ‘am working on for my cousin to put by her fish pond . And I want her to leave it outside . I should stain the wood and seal it !!
The shelf liner has a sticky backing which is already a big advantage over a regular mylar stencil. I'm wondering if you have tried this method with a mylar stencil? If so did you have the same success? Did you have to add a spray adhesive on the back?
Most helpful video I’ve seen! But if we’re staining a board for the background do we stain with a sponge as well for the background to prevent bleeding or does this not work for staining?
Curious as to what setting you use on the silhouette for the contact paper. I have attempted numerous times and it always cuts through. I also cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to cut without the mat...ugh...the struggle is real!!! :-D
you made me smile more when you said "this is the way we spell favourite in Canada"
I was cheering her on when she said that! 😀
It made me smile and I don't live in Canada. Lol
This is BRILLIANT!!!! The bleeding has discouraged me from stenciling. Thanks to you I just might give it another try! Thank You!

Thanks for the great info! The sign looks good and it was cute when you laughed about how you spell "favourite" in Canada :)
Wonderful tip. Going to try it today!
Thanks for the tips! I tried this and it worked great.
Thanks so much for the tips on stenciling. Everything I make is so stinking cute [to me) lol but I mess up the stenciling every time. This just might be to tip I needed. You are talented for sure.
I tried this and it really works!!!!!
These were good tips. Thank you so much 💓 💗 💛 💖 ☺️ ♥️ 💓 💗 💛 💖
You are so welcome!
Excellent tips. Do you ever have problems with your background paint peeling off with the vinyl when you let the paint dry?
this just happened to be no idea why wasted a stencil :(
Jane Campbell I have been trying all sorts of different methods myself-i believe the reason could be that the surface under your paint was not sanded?
On e again, an awesome video. Thanks for sharing.
Loved your comment about the spelling of ‘favourite’ I’m Australian and we also spell it with a ‘u’
same here in the UK :)
Thanks for the tips!

The best I've seen.
I was so happy to see favourite spelled the Canadian way online! That's honestly the main reason I watched lol
haha love this!
Love your projects!

That first layer same color is a FANTASTIC tip! Thanks for sharing! Do you remove the stencil while the paint is wet or let it dry?
Very, very helpful and well explained. Thank you.

Thank you for this tutorial. I am redecorating my home and I want to make a sign. I’ve already bought wood.
Great video! Thanks for being so clear, Elysia. How long to leave first sponge layer to dry please?
Your sign message is timely...

Now what do you do if you're painting on a multicoloured background? And what do you use to wipe the sanding away?
Danille Illyasaville if your painting a multi coloured background, where she’s adding her base colour to prevent bleeding you use mod podge which dries clear

What did you use for your stencil? I’m very new to this and want to try it
I use con-tact shelf liner
Love your videos! Fellow Canadian subscriber here! 🙌🏻🇨🇦
ya!
THANK YOU🙃
What if I want to stencil on to an unpainted background?
What font did you use for “favourite”? This is done beautifully.
The shelf liner has a sticky backing which is already a big advantage over a regular mylar stencil. I'm wondering if you have tried this method with a mylar stencil? If so did you have the same success? Did you have to add a spray adhesive on the back?
Nice tips!
Thanks
Loving your videos!!! What do you do when stenciling on wood stain?
Can I ask...what fonts did you use to create this? Love the look!
These are my own custom designs but many fonts would work :)
Most helpful video I’ve seen!
But if we’re staining a board for the background do we stain with a sponge as well for the background to prevent bleeding or does this not work for staining?
I would use a colour that matches the stain closely
Thanks so much for this video. Helped me a ton. Do you use a Cricut to cut your contact paper? If so, what setting?
Hi Charissa! I use a Silhouette Cameo :)
Do you have any Tips to avoid bleeding on a stained background instead of painted? Ty
I do! When I use stain I will use a paint colour that is similar to the stain colour! Works great!
I use matte modge Podge, it dries clear! It works really well for me.
Love the video! How long do you wait for the background to be dry?? What Behr paint do you use? I’m struggling with my sign 😬😬
Great tip, thanks. What cut setting do you use for contact paper? I have a silhouette portrait. Thanks Again
1:26 Game Changer ( Also use technique with tape for cutting borders and trim. )
Curious as to what setting you use on the silhouette for the contact paper. I have attempted numerous times and it always cuts through. I also cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to cut without the mat...ugh...the struggle is real!!! :-D
I just saw your video that shows how to use contact paper. I love your videos. Thank you for sharing your journey. :-)
Hi English family
My problem is when I remove the stencil from like the letter "o" I damage the back ground paint.
Same problem. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.
This was very helpful, thank you!! ♥️ What type of paint would you recommend? I’ve been using eggshell latex but my vinyl hasn’t been sticking well...
Is painting the base color first only for wood? Or can it be applied to other materials? Thanks for the tips.
Hi love your videos! How to you over lap the letters?
Thx
What do you use as your stencil? It’s looks clear? I’ve been using oracal 813 I think it is?
I am using Contact Shelf Liner currently
Thank you! Do you peel the stencil when the paint is wet or dry?
I usually pull when it is wet although I don't think it makes too much difference from my experience :)
Do you have issues with the base coat peeling up when you remove the stencil? Maybe it is because I used chalk paint...?
If your chalk paint has peeled up, then it hasn’t dried properly or adhered to your surface properly
What kind of paint do you use for the letter? Regular paint? Chalk?
Loving your videos❤I'm a new subscriber with a question..can you reuse the stencil and if so about how many times. Thanks
