    Interesting video. I'm a professional woodworker and I agree about the bubbles, they will be gone in an hour or so with so thin of a liquid. You could also use a #4 Ford cup to measure the viscosity. You would have more standardized results. The #4 ford cup I use is plastic and costs about $15. I can go back to my notes from 15-20 years ago and repeat a finish mixture I used in the past. Mixing by weight as you do is a very good practice as well. Thanks for the video.

    • @AndreaMercierArtist
      @AndreaMercierArtist  7 років тому

      Thanks for watching. Yes I used the funnel in lieu of a ford cup. I was going to order one and then figured if I used the same funnel I would get repeatable results. But I thank you for commenting on that for others. The mixing by weight is my standard practise, however I have told people if they really want to do it by cups instead, they can, but have to be able to use the same measuring cup all the time. They are all different. And I am very happy that you have notes that go back that far for repeatable results....that is an organizational mind that I can certainly appreciate. Thanks again for wathcing and commenting Frank, I really appreciate it. cheers.

      Hello. One of the reasons why I use boiled and cooled water is so that there are no bacteria introduced to the paint. You can use distilled water for the same reason. I use a LOT of paint, so I have never had a problem with the paint turning bad and smelling. I would say if you had it in an AIR TIGHT container and used boiled or distilled water it should be good for 6-8 months. I know that I have a couple of bottles that are over 6 months old and are still good! I hope that helps.
      I appreciate you being here and it is people like you who are helping me live my dream by teaching online!

    I always have an issue with the "honey" part... I don't like honey, I don't want to heat it, or smell it... your method actually explains how to get to a specific consistency consistently, and for that reason it's more realistic. I do have a consistency that I enjoy using, and matching it from one mix to another is my goal. Thank you for also using the scale. A lot of time people are forgetting that the weight of paint is different from the weight of water, and they try to measure depth instead of weight. An inch of paint doesn't weigh the same as an inch of water!!! So thank you for helping take the confusion out of mixing and consistency.

    Sheesh... Why is it that some people struggle so hard to find the volume buttons/knob? "I can't hear!!!" Sounds like a medical issue, yo. Taking the extra time to leave a negative comment on a UA-cam video won't resolve it, either. The audio in this video is sufficient, and UA-cam has a subtitle feature... Though they probably won't figure that one out if they can't even operate volume functions 😂 Thank you for taking the time to make this video to share what you have learned with us.

    Hi Andrea
    . enjoy your vid . Have you thought about using a kitchen stick blender to mis your paint . no bubbles

    • @AndreaMercierArtist
      @AndreaMercierArtist  7 років тому +1

      That is a good idea ... and I think it would work if I was doing a large batch of one colour. I am waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too lazy to clean the thing between colours :) And now that I mix right in the squeeze bottle it wouldn't fit. BUT that is an AWESOME idea and I will mention it in an upcoming video. Smart lady! I don't worry so much about bubbles anymore as my paints sit for so long in between mixings and I use my heat gun to pop them. But I still Love this idea. You Rock.

I was lucky the first time.. but, now I know ill always get it right... and Yes i agree its about the viscosity.. i knew the time i got it right, was because of the weight of the paint.,. all the colors.. and other times... they just ran off and made a mess.. haha.. thank you.. so much..

      Thank you so much for your inspiration Jacob! I can't thank you enough. I am just getting started into fluid arts and went to a demo at an art shop a few days ago. The person doing the demo cautioned against using water and recommended the pouring medium instead (at least when combining it with pre-made fluid acrylics - they used Vallejo). She said that water tends to make the paint pigments separate.
    Is this just how you make the fluid acrylic paint from the basics, and you use a medium when you're prepping to pour, or is this your final mix (viscosity) and you're pour-ready at this point? Looking at the cost of the Vallejo or Golden Liquid Acrylic paints, I'm definitely interested in making some of my own.

    • @AndreaMercierArtist
      @AndreaMercierArtist  5 років тому +3

      I am aware that some in the profession believe that the water will ruin the paint, but I encourage you to check out my professional fine art at www.am2fineart.ca to see the beautiful results we get. The canvas has to dry flat, so the water evaporates and the pigment settles into the canvas fibers permanently. My partner cannot remove it even with oil paint thinner, which is a caustic chemical. It completely bonds into a plastic film. I do not use mediums for any of my pouring or teaching. Water and Liquitex Basics 50/50 by weight. Period. I tried medium in it once and it was a mess to clean up. My formula is cleanable with soap and water and comes out of clothes and rugs. Because my pieces are so large (usually 4ft x 3ft) I could never make my paints with the Vallejo or Golden paints it would be prohibitively expensive. I have been pouring like this for 3 years and the paintings that I display at gallery shows still look as good today as they did three years ago. Try it with water only and see the results you get. As long as the paints are all the same viscosity it won't mix and muddy. I have given up trying to convince people that I am correct about the water only and let my art tell the tale instead. Good luck! If you have other questions, please drop a line here again. Cheers.

    Andrea, enjoyed seeing how you make your fluid acrylics. I've got a bug recently to try acrylic skins. I missed if you use soft body or heavy body Liquitex. Does it matter?

    • @AndreaMercierArtist
      @AndreaMercierArtist  8 років тому

      Hi! Yesterday it wouldn't let me post a comment.... I use the Liquitex Basics....they are economical and if I were to use the more expensive heavy body paint, I would have to add more water to thin it down. So it doesn't make sense to use expensive paints for my type of acrylic pours. Techically you can you ANY paint you want. You just have to choose a viscosity that you like and replicate it with other brands. Does that make sense?

    Interesting! So now it’s 2019. Have you found that your recipe has worked? Mo cracking in your paintings as they have aged? Thank you!

    • @AndreaMercierArtist
      @AndreaMercierArtist  5 років тому +2

      So I have been doing this for 3ish years and continue to make large paintings for sale. You can check them out at www.am2fineart.ca Additionally, once cured the paint completely hardens into a plastic film that my partner cannot move with turpentine when she paints over it in oils. I have not had one crack that wasn't planned and filled in with a metallic paint. The plastic film embeds itself into the fibre of the canvas and cannot be scratched off without damaging the cotton duck canvas. So I am very happy with the results and so are my customers. Thanks for asking! Have a super day. Oh, yes...my recipe has worked well and I still do 50/50 by weight.

      I don't use any mediums, resins or glycerin in my work...it is all paint and water.... That may change in the future, but I am really enjoying this way right now. Also it is easier for me to teach with just water and paints....no toxic ingredients. Does glycerin thicken the paint or just make it glossy?

    • @AndreaMercierArtist
      @AndreaMercierArtist  7 років тому +1

      I find that 50/50 with the Amsterdam is good as well and I can use them with the Liquitex without a problem. Now that is for the Amsterdam STANDARD...not the EXPERT....those ones are a bit thicker...you might have to play with them a bit. I don't use them as they are more expensive. Good luck. Hi Andrea! Thank you so much for this video. It was really helpful and great information. You rock! :) I'm curious about why you use water and not the pouring medium others say to use? Just wondering if you tried it and what the pros/cons are of each?

    how much longer does it take to dry the canvases with this style of work?
    Im used to just regular acrylic brush painting. ...which we know drys fast.

    • @AndreaMercierArtist
      @AndreaMercierArtist  7 років тому +1

      Excellent question. I don't use pouring or other mediums. I only use water to thin the paints. So if I leave it alone it will be dry in a few hours or overnight. Mediums and resins take FOREVER to dry...so I am liking this. If I am in a rush, I will put a hair dryer on low and cool and blow it across the painting to help the water evaporate. It dries matte, so I always give it a glossy varnish finish! Thanks for your question!

    Hi....I am in the "learning" stage and have "sticker shock" over the price of paints and such lol, so appreciate anywhere I can save $$...that being said, I had read elsewhere (I am doing LOTS of reading) that mixing only water into the paint vs a medium, makes the paint unstable long term and it will eventually flake off the surface...as it was explained, it had to do with the space between the pigment molecules and how they bond to water molecules vs medium molecules...the water molecules and too far apart from the pigment molecules to form the "honeycomb" stability molecule....so while I would love to only use water, I was wondering if you had any thoughts on that subject....any personal experience in terms of long term paintings. It's one thing if you make something for yourself, but if you make it for someone else you certainly want it to last forever....thanks!

    • @AndreaMercierArtist
      @AndreaMercierArtist  7 років тому +2

      All good questions. I have been doing this for a year, art for myself and for commissions. When you pour the paint you are applying a LOT more paint than when brushing it on. Yes, if you dilute acrylic paints too much on a brush painting they can flake off over time...but this process is different. The paint is thick and stretched...creating a smooth surface when dry. As the the water evaporates from the surface the paint sinks into the canvas fabric and dries. It actually becomes part of the canvas. It can't flake as it is all one solid piece of paint. It is the same with canvas panels, the paint dries into the crevices of the fabric top and on hardboard it become part of the wood. I let it dry slowly, evaporating the water over a couple of days. I don't force the drying as it will crack and then flake. I always coat my paints with a spray varnish to give it a glossy wet look, which seals it permanently. I only use water right now as my pieces are so big that a polymer or medium would be outrageously expensive. I encourage you to watch my videos, go to facebook.com/AnlomesArt to see paintings I have done and I also have a group at facebook.com/groups/FluidAcrylicPaintCommunity where we can have more discussions. Cheers.

      The tool is a funnel...I couldn't afford a Ford Cup...so I am faking it with a funnel...I just bought it at the dollar store in the cooking section...it was the smallest one they had as well. I can recommend Cheap Joe's for good quality student grade paint, they also sell Liquitex Basics. They are in North Carolina, but ship throughout USA and Canada. In the USA there is also Dick Blick and Jerry Artarama. In Canada there is DeSerres and Curry's. I hope this helps...good luck with your search and your art~!

  • @CoxJoxSox
    @CoxJoxSox 7 років тому +2

    I'm confused - esp as you don't distinguish between 4.1-4.9 flow differential. I'm assuming you WANT differences in viscosity for the paints to interact with each other. Ergo- I would think you would want some paints below 4.1 flow and some over 4.9 flow. How do you thicken the higher viscosity paints and how do you thin for the lower viscosity?

    • @CoxJoxSox
      @CoxJoxSox 7 років тому

      I would think the SAME viscosity would make them mix together more easily. There is a siqueiros painting technique that is shown on youtube and the paints interact BECAUSE they have different viscosities.

    • @AndreaMercierArtist
      @AndreaMercierArtist  7 років тому +2

      My method is dependant on the paints having the same viscosity and pushing against each other instead of mixing. The difference between 4.1 and 4.9 isn't enough of a difference for them to not push. If they have different viscosities the more fluid paint will mix with the thicker paint by floating on top of it as it is more watery. I don't want them to interact for my method. Now there are a TON of artists out there who love that the different thicknesses interact...but for me that isn't what I want. So my method is really for people just starting out who want a "recipe" and aren't into mediums or additives. They can build their techniques from there. I use less water or more water to thicken or thin the paints. But because I use the same paints and the same recipe to get the same viscosity this isn't an issue for me anymore. I have my 50/50 recipe and am happy with it. This is a great question, and I thank you for posting it.

      @AndreaMercierArtist  7 років тому

      Hi...I am not sure why a small percentage of people have trouble with the sound. My husband believes some laptop speakers aren't strong enough but I have no proof. Thanks for letting me know though.
      Yes, I use 50/50 water and paint by weight for my mix. My mix is a tad thicker than other fluid artists use, kind of crepe batter consistency. It is a good place to start and then if you want it to be thinner you can add more water, just make sure to mix all the paints the same consistency if you want them to "push" like mine instead of mix.
      I hope that helps...have a super day!

    Why not squeeze half of the paint into a plastic bottle, half into another, then add water to both bottles until the 50% water portion is reached? Less paint wasted and hardly any mess to clean up. I paint gaming miniatures (anything from 15mm (1/100th scale), to 28mm (1/56th scale), and larger), but I've never tried to make a paint from artist acrylic tube paints. I'm afraid the paint composition might start to break down if I thinned it to a consistency suitable for painting hobby miniatures. I believe Golden (maybe Liquitex as well), sell 'fluid' acrylics that are much closer to the type of paint I need, but they're pretty darned expensive 0.0 .

    • @AndreaMercierArtist
      @AndreaMercierArtist  7 років тому +2

      This video was made before I got my much bigger bottles and quart sized paint containers from Liquitex. Saves on plastic being recycled too! I have so many colours that one squeeze bottle per colour is enough. If you want to paint minatures and want to use the cheaper artist acrylic paint you can thin them with acrylic airbursh medium, so you don't lose the integrity of the paint. www.goldenpaints.com/technicalinfo_abmedium Thanks for watching and commenting.

      Hello Heather! You can use heavy body acrylics if you want, however know that they tend to be more expensive paints and you will have to water them down some more to make them thin enough to pour. But I encourage experimentation. But for this reason, I use the Liquitex Basics in lieu of the more expensive paints. Have a great day and thanks so much for watching my videos.

      Hello my dear. I don't use additives in my paint. I don't use mediums or oils or glues or anything. Once acrylic paints are dry and cured they don't have to be varnished as they are plastic, however I give them a glossy finish so they look shiny and wet again. Acrylic paints dry matte. • @AndreaMercierArtist
      @AndreaMercierArtist  7 років тому +1

      You can make paint with natural things....especially minerals. As a matter of fact most good quality paints are made with minerals ground into a very fine pigment powder. These are minerals like cadmium, aquamarine and cobalt. You add linseed oil to make oil paints, you add polymer to make acrylic paints, you add egg yolk to make tempera paints and you add arabic gum to make watercolours. You can actually buy the ground pigments online and make your own paints. I hope this helps! • @AndreaMercierArtist
      @AndreaMercierArtist  6 років тому +1

      Hello! Sorry to hear that you are struggling.... have you watched this video in full? It describes the mixing of the paints for my recipe at 50% water and 50% acrylic paint by WEIGHT. This gives you a consistency of thin pancake batter or crepe batter. If all of your paints are the same viscosity/consistency they will push against each other and not mix. So I am thinking that you are either mixing them too thin and they don't have enough body to push OR that they aren't all mixed the same consistency and the thinner paints flow over the thicker paints and then start to mix. You certainly CAN use mediums, but I don't and get really great results. Check out these videos to see some real time tutorials I have done

      This video was intended for people who have never created fluid acrylic pours or mixed the paints before...so I created a step-by-step video for them to see how to do it. Some people want a "recipe" that they can follow that will give them confidence so they be sure they are doing it right before throwing some paint around. I have many videos in fast forward for people, like yourself, who just want to see what is being done and how it turns out. I encourage you to check them out. Most of them last around 6 mins and you get to see the whole process. So although the end goal is to definitely be fun, some need a guiding hand so they can be comfortable enough to have fun. I encourage you to post some videos so we can see your process and give people a balance! It is always good for new artists to see different ways of doing the same thing so they can find their own path. Thanks for commenting!

    How can I make the acrylic paint itself as it is very expensive? Thank you

    • @AndreaMercierArtist
      @AndreaMercierArtist  6 років тому +1

      Acrylic paint is simply a polymer and pigment mixed together. I use very cheap student grade paint, like Liquitex Basics. It is actually MORE expensive to make your own paint as the pigments are so expensive. But if you have access to powdered pigments, you can mix it with clear polymer gel and make a paint. The pigments have to be very very finely ground or it will be lumpy... good luck either way! And thanks for watching my videos.

    Am completely new in this ... tried with medium ... but it was complete fail ...
    Can u temme was it hot water or cold water ?

    • @AndreaMercierArtist
      @AndreaMercierArtist  7 років тому

      I use warm water when I mix as it boiled first to kill any bacteria so my paints don't get a bad smell. I am too impatient to wait for it to cool. If you are mixing with distilled water from a bottle it can be cold out of the bottle. I hope that this helps! Let me know how it goes. Good luck. And be brave....experiments are a good learning tool.

      Acrylic paints dry matte...so if you want glossy you can either spray with a gloss varnish or clear acrylic spray paint. Some people will use resin after it is dry for a glass like finish or use a varnish with a sponge or brush. I hope this helps. Cheers.

      Hello. You can "thicken" acrylic paint with mediums, specifically molding paste. This is an acrylic binder that has a plaster of paris consistency so you can make really thick impastos. Now you can also use HEAVY BODY acrylic paint for the same effect with less mess, but it is a bit more expensive! Cheers.

    Do you ever use floetrol? If not what is the reason?

    • @AndreaMercierArtist
      @AndreaMercierArtist  6 років тому +2

      I do not use floetrol or any additives to my paint and water mixture. This is for a couple of reasons, the biggest is that I teach to the public, both seniors and children and don't want any toxic things added to something that might end up in someone's mouth. The second is that I have experimented with additives, specifically mediums from Liquitex and I didn't like the clean up. Paint and water washes away without more than soap and water. I encourage people to experiment with mediums and additives, but to be aware that they were never meant to be heated up and vaporized and breathed in....and to read labels and make sure what they are using is something they are comfortable with. Hope that helps. Have a great day...and thanks for watching my videos.

    My paint cracks after it dries. Do you know what I might be doing wrong?

    • @AndreaMercierArtist
      @AndreaMercierArtist  7 років тому +1

      Hello Krystal and thanks for watching my videos and commenting. Sorry that your paint is cracking...There are usually a few reasons why fluid acrylic paint cracks as it dries:
      1. The paint is too thick, so the outside is drying faster than the inside and it causes cracking or what some artists call crazing. If you are using my 50/50 by weight method then the paint should be the consistency of thick cream or thin crepe batter. If it is thicker than this, it isn't wrong, it will just pile up and not flow out as much, giving you the cracking during drying. This can be nice for texture, but if you are avoiding it, make sure you paint is thin enough. My recipe is actually thicker than a lot of artists, so if you want to add more water you can.
      2. The paint is drying too fast due to applied heat or fan; causing the same issues as above; the paint is drying on the outside faster than the inside. Fluid acrylic paint that has been poured out and "stretched" over the edge of the canvas will normally dry from the outside edge into the middle. If you put a heat gun or hair dryer on it to try and dry it faster, then it will dry the top layer first, trapping the moisture inside and cracking. If you are trying to speed up the drying, try putting on a fan or hair dryer that is indirectly blowing air around the room without heat. I will point it at my wall and it will bounce off and just move the air around the room without actually drying it. I find it does speed up the process a bit, but my paint mixture still normally needs overnight to dry.
      3. The paint is reacting to an additive. I don't use additives in the majority of my paint or work. 99% of the time it is paint and water only; however some artists do enjoy working with additives and mediums. Some of these can cause a chemical reaction that heats up the paint mixture causing it to dry too quickly and thicken up; causing cracking.
      These are the most commons reasons. If this doesn't sound like your issue please feel free to comment back with your mixture and I will try to troubleshoot it with you. Good luck! And again, cracking isn't a "bad" thing. In Japanese culture a broken cup is repaired with gold so that the flaw can be admired as well. If you love a piece and it is cracked, try filling the crack with gold paint or Inca Gold and loving it for what it is. Cheers.

      It could be under binding. Because on almost all acrylic paint it states only to use up to 30% water. 50% water can cause cracking and crazing maby try a pouring medium to help.

      Ya the paint won't separate Anita. The only way you can fix it is by adding more paint to the mix to thicken it. Where in the video are you hearing this? Maybe I need to add some clarification.... Let me know. Good luck.

      also you mention any scale will work, or something to that nature.. then you go on to say somethimg about it doesnt matter if its gram or ounces... just to make things clear, if ur after percise measurements youd be better off measuring it as a liquid if someome were to measure in ounces as compared to grams. 28 grams in an ounce and is a pretty big difference in volume, especially if ur going to go thru all this trouble. why not just get one squirt bottle fill half way with water and half way with paint ? seems simple enough
      either way , loooong video could be summed up in 1 minute video. might be more user friendly...
      keep up the good work, itll come together eventually for you ! cheers!

      Hi Anita. This video was created as a submission to an online magazine and they specifically wanted a step-by-step tutorial on how to make my fluid acrylic paints. So the length of the video reflects that there was no fast-forwarding in this video. The audience would be able to see everything that I did. Weight is the best way to measure any item for precision. It doesn't matter if your scale measures in ounces or grams...as long as you measure both the paint and the water in the same unit. so 50 grams of water to 50 grams of paint OR 50 ounces of water to 50 ounces of paint. This video is to demonstrate how to find the "recipe" for the viscosity that the audience wants to use. My recipe is 50/50 and I don't test it anymore. I put the bottle on the scale, weigh in 200 grams of paint and then 200 grams of water and shake it up. This video was to show step-by-step how this was accomplished. Once you have a viscosity that you like...you don't have to test anymore, just repeat what you like. My paints are quite thick, some people add MORE water for a thinner mix. The reason why I don't fill the bottle with half water and half paint is some paint weighs more than others in a line of paint. Black weighs less than red as cadmium is heavier than carbon. You won't get a consistent viscosity across the board if you do it by cups/ml/etc... I want consistent viscosity so my paints push against each other instead of mixing. Again...this is MY method...other artists use no measurements and get good results. But I am introducing this to newbies who want a recipe/formula so they are successful. I agree that a non-tutorial video could have been shorter and I do have some faster ones...but I wanted to lay the groundwork for a step-by-step process/procedure for people that like to have instructions 1-2-3. This is my most popular video. Thanks for the feedback...your encouragement is appreciated.

    do you think that i could airbrush with your paint mixture?

    • @AndreaMercierArtist
      @AndreaMercierArtist  6 років тому

      No. My mixture would be too thick for an airbrush....
      To airbrush you would need Liquitex Air Brush Medium, which you can find here ... amzn.to/2HtCiHJ
      I have never used the airbrush medium, so I would encourage you to experiment with different consistencies until you found the one that works best for you
      Now... you might want to try to thin down my mixture even more, to get to the airbrush medium consistency with water and see what happens, but it would be very sheer as the paint would be watered down a lot. This should be an experiment only, just to see what happens.
      For professional results I have to encourage you to use the Air Brush Medium to get sustainable results.
      Good luck!

    • @AndreaMercierArtist
      @AndreaMercierArtist  7 років тому +3

      I have added iridescence medium to a couple of colours for some sparkle. For special projects I will use a bit of medium. I weigh the medium and paint together and then add 50% water. So if there is 50 grams of paint and 10 grams of medium, then I will add 60 grams of water. Does that make sense? Does that help?

    Can't you eye ball everything? I can't see how it's necessary to go through all that you do, especially knowing Liquidtex Basics are consistent with the viscosity of their paints. 🤔😊🤔😊🤔😊

    • @AndreaMercierArtist
      @AndreaMercierArtist  7 років тому

      You certainly can eyeball...but for me it is all about the same viscosity so that my paints are all the exact same thickness so they push each other instead of mix. Some artists like the mixing...I don't. So if you want to just add water until you are happy....go for it. Experimenting is what it is all about. Just so you know...when I make new paints...I just put the bottle on the scale, add 200 grams of paint...add 200 grams of water and shake. This video was a step-by-step process for newbies. I don't test or anything anymore. The paints are all the same viscosity from Liquitex, which is why I like them .... weighing is more precise than measurement by cup....as anyone who uses resin will know...but it would be okay to do a cup of paint with a cup of water OR even make some lines on the bottles and just fill to the lines. This video shows off my OCD and was an introduction to people that had never done this before. Thanks so much for you comment...it gives me a chance to more fully explain myself to everyone. Cheers.
