I am a fan. You keep pottery making real. There’s a lot of channels out there that focus on I’m great and wonderful. Thank you so much for focusing on the reality of pottery. When it comes out of the kiln you truly don’t know what’s going to happen. Looking forward to your next video.
Your channel is great , the combinations are right up my street, Just a tip when removing a drip catcher for you pieces use a block of wood, I learned this from a welsh potter,.
Girl, I love the excited "Wooooo" when you lift that first shelf! I feel ya! I recently put Mayco Blue Opal on my Brown Bear Clay (similar in look to your dark chocolate clay) and it comes out so amazing. All on it's own it gives great results. Same with Blue Rutile from Amaco. amazing results
My 'wooooo' was a little dramatic..lololol... I haven't tried Mayco's Blue Opal before, I have to get it and give it a try! I just love the look of blue glazes with the dark chocolate clay, who am I kidding, I love the look of pretty much all glazes with dark chocolate clay!
@@SarahWaltonPottery I think the Woooo was Heartfelt. and I totally get it. hoping to have one of those moments this weekend! If I can get a couple more things glazed!
Hi Alexa, Yes, I agree, when I was editing my video I noticed that I was rushed and the camera didn't focus properly, sorry! I appreciate the feedback, as I'm new and learning, feedback is essential!! Thank you!
Not many people using the darker clays, on UA-cam. I like them too, I’m happy to see the results! Have you ever used a black clay? What would you recommend for a black clay? I actually liked the glaze that crawled… i suppose it was a little thick… I love the Frosted Lemon glaze!
Hi Victoria, I agree I think I must have applied the glaze a little too thick resulting in the crawling..:( the closest to a black clay I’ve used is the Laguna 391 which fires really really dark. And I’ve used the Pottery Supply House ‘black’ clay which is really a very dark brown . Both look stunning at cone 6 but I prefer the PSH clay as it doesn’t have grog so it kinder on the hands for throwing. Thank you for supporting my channel!
Hi Sarah, I have recently subscribed to your channel. It is always fun to see a kiln unloading, great job with glaze choices. I was especially happy to see the Laguna 391 clay as I just bought some and now I know how dark it fires to. I also have the 613. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Sally thank you for watching and subscribing to my channel! The Laguna 391 clay is a little rough on the hands when throwing due to the grog but in my opinion worth it because it’s just so gorgeous! I just love the way glazes play against the dark chocolate colour of the clay! I’ve used it with a few different glazes and have been pleased every time! Good luck with it!!
Hi Sarah, I'm just wondering if you would share what glaze was used with Archie's base on the marbled cup that you had to remove the cookie. I didn't happen to see the glaze combo on that one. Thanks for sharing so much in your videos. It's very helpful for me as I want to start using some darker clay bodies ❤
I had to go back and take a look...I believe you were looking at the bronzy drippy one. That was 2x Rust Brown under 2x Archies Base both are Coyote Glazes... Soooo pretty if I do say so my self...but definitely a runner
Hi Patrice, thank you for the suggestion, and yes I can do that. I’m still learning all about filming editing, and I’ve been watching other content creators filming style so that I can up my game and make the best possible videos, my next video may not reflect some of my new found knowledge as there is a lag between filming and uploading…but your feedback definitely helps!
Hi, you can just reapply a bit of glaze where the crawling was (maybe you will have to heat your pot before). Crawling is because the glaze was applied too thickly. Same with where you forgot the second layer: just reapply and fire again. Sometimes the colors get more melted and even more beautiful after a second (of third) firing. About the catchers, how many times can you use them? They don't bloat after several firings?
Hi Ann! Thanks for the suggestion re, refiring, I have done that before and maybe I should try it here. I am worried that the glazes will run roofs the pot but hey it’s worth the shot cuz as it stands they are ruined! as for the drip catchers you can use them many times, I usually end up smashing them due to drips than for any other reason. And for bloating it really doesn’t matter bcuz you aren’t using them form anything other then for firing. You can even put kiln wash on them for even more uses! As a side note, I can’t take credit for them I got the idea from Old Forge Creations. Thanks again for the tips!
Thanks for the suggestion! I’m thinking maybe some dust bcuz I did do test with this glaze on the same clay body and had beautiful results. Live and learn😉
Hi Heidi! Yes you can layer glazes on the inside of a pot/mug just be sure that any glazes you use as a liner glaze is suitable to be in contact with food surfaces. Thanks for your question!
Hi Crypto Mami! The marble clay is a mixture of 3 different clays and when put on the wheel they create a marbled effect...one of my personal faves!! If I remember correctly I used a speckled, a brown and white clay but I that particular mug I threw quite a while ago. I will be making a video on marble clay in the coming weeks so stay tuned! Thanks for watching!!
Do you dip and brush? I’m newish and I just bought obsidian as a dipping g,are but all my others are brush on. Have you seen any poor results from doing this if you do it?
I dip and brush all the time, no worries about that. I have some of my favs in dipping format and then top them with other glazes, dip, pour and or brush. You’re going to have so much fun with obsidian!! Cheers
@@SarahWaltonPottery yes I love obsidian and hate brushing on 3-4 coats! Will test if one dip is enough but still way easier! Thank you for your response.
Your cone packs are backward. The lowest cone should be first in the pack (it slumps first, so you don't want it slumping on an unslumped cone in front of it). Also, if you had placed the cone packs behind the peepholes where you could see them, you would know exactly where the kiln is during the firing. Clearly (based on the large cones) your firing was ended too soon and did not reach temperature (although it is firing unevenly - hotter in the bottom). If the cones had been where you could see them, you could have fired spot on temperature, even corrected the uneven temperature. There is not much point using visual cones when you can't see them. Never trust mechanical kiln devices, especially kiln sitters!
Thank you Will for this info. I appreciate you taking the time to give me these great pointers. I struggle to see the cones in the kiln thru the peep holes even when lined up where I should be able to see. All I see is red hot. I tried using a flashlight as I’ve seen a potter do and that didn’t work so I use the cones to confirm that each shelf makes it to temp. So if you have a suggestion to help me see the cones during firing I’d appreciate it. 😊🙏
@@SarahWaltonPottery oh good I have an idea for those mugs that the glazes slipped from how about u redo them but put one glaze on the inside and another one on the outside will that work give it a go
Hi Tonie, hey that might work! I’ll give it a try. I will heat up the mugs and apply some more glaze- one on the inside-one on the outside and refits…Fingers crossed that it works!
Yes you can refire pottery, sometimes with beautiful results, sometimes not so much. You can get bloating if the clay gets too much heat work and some glazes do better than others..its kinda trial and error 😊
