- Hi Everyone! This video is about glazing pottery for beginners and creating beautiful glaze results using Potter’s Choice and Mayco glazes. This is a step-by-step glazeing tutorial showing beginner potters how to glazes pottery and make stunning glaze results. Whether you’re a hobby potter or a production pro looking for inspiration, take your pottery to the next level!!
In this video I’m experimenting with a glaze that I have never used before, PC-56 Ancient Copper by Amaco and boy did it come out of the kiln beyond my wildest dreams…STUNNING GLAZE with beautiful molten drips atop Pottery Supply House 540i, a rich dark brown or as some call it black clay when fired to cone 6…one of my favourites! I’m giving you tips and tricks how to glaze pottery and how I create beautiful glaze drips when layering glazes or using them alone.
The Mayco glazes that I use in this video are some of my tried, tested and consistently true ceramic glazes that are sure to help you create beautiful glaze results every time. I start by lining both bottles in Blue Surf, a rich deep blue that breaks on texture with shades of green. Then I layer Sandstone and Alabaster to add additional movement and a touch of cream to the finished glaze.
Get ready to Glaze With Me! I hope you enjoy! Thanks for watching! xo
Many of you have asked about glazing BRUSHES since I published this video so I thought I'd add this until I am able to do a more in depth video on tools, but I think this should hold you over. Some of the brushes that you see me use in my videos are from various Pottery Supply Stores, I have since purchased some from Amazon and Art Stores etc. and tested them out to see how much I like them...so far I'm impressed. I am sharing my AMAZON LINK with you for some brushes that I have purchased myself and quite like.

I also loved yr copper glaze
Thank you for the very informative video. That ancient copper is dope.
Thanks Natasha!! I totally agree with you!!! Cheers!
Dang, now I have to order Ancient Copper. I'm running out of room on the glaze shelves! Very nice results.
Yes it’s quickly sky rocketed in my top favs! You won’t be disappointed if you get your hands on some. I have a few ideas how I’m going to layer it that I think/hope🤞 will be interesting and I promise to share😉
Love love love!
🥰🥰🥰
That ancient copper and black clay comb is on another level!!
Thanks Marco! 😊
Beautiful glazes
Thank you!!🥰
I love ancient copper. I have not used dark clay yet. I mostly use Laguna B mix5 . I just ordered a new kiln controller for my kiln. Now i will be able to controll the cool down. I have seen some amazing crystal groth in ancient copper with a slow cool.
Thank for the videos. Keep up the great work
Allen
Oh that sounds so exciting to get a controller! I’m excited for you! 😆 😆😆 One day, I hope to upgrade too, and have more control with firings, that’ll up the glaze game…fo sho!! Thank you for your encouraging words🙏🙏🙏
@@SarahWaltonPottery the controller is for my evenheat 1822 kiln. It came with a Perfect Fire controller. On of the verry first computer controllers. I ordered a genesis controller. It was around $950.00 far less than a new kiln
@@allenfitz1 converting my kiln over to electronic will probably be my next big investment, and 1k vs 5-6k can’t be beat! Let me know how you like the controller you bought!
We miss you! Looking forward to another kiln opening!
I’m working on one! Just need time to edit!! Thanks for waiting for me! 😘
Wow, love that copper one. It’s so beautiful on the dark clay. Thank you for sharing. I always look forward to your videos.
Thank you Debbie! I’m glad you like my work 🥰😊🙏
The ancient copper was stunning 😍!!
Agreed!! I was sooo happy when I pulled that one out of the kiln!
Sarah hello from the UK, just outside town called Dover, only 22miles over the water to France. Watched this today, I just love your running glazes, in so your vlogs, but today I agree with you the copper was stunning and the blue was just beautiful thanks for sharing x
Hi Denise from UK 🇬🇧!! So nice to hear from you!! Thanks for this it means a lot to me hearing that people are enjoying my content! 😘 🤗
The dark glasses look really good on you! Love the haircut too!
Thanks Michelle!! That’s Very sweet of you 🤭😁
Beautiful work . Connie from Saskatchewan
Thank you Connie! I hear that the prairies got a lot of snow last week! Hope it didn’t affect you too much🤞
The glaze works beautifully with your pottery. So pretty 😊
Thank you Veronica 🥰
Thanks for the tip on pouring the sandstone glaze!
You’re welcome Natalie!! I hope it works for you too! 😉
Love!
Thank you!!!
Hai love your videos .I coming from the Netherlands.
Thank you so much Eliza! The Netherlands 🇳🇱 wow!! Another place I’d love to travel too…one day! 🤞🤞😉
Absolutely gorgeous color!
Thank you Jamie!! 🥰
Spent the weekend re-vamping the "in home office" so that I could bring my glazes "inside"...the temps are just too darned low out in the shack. Glazing here and hoping by the weekend to get the kiln fired so I can see my first Archie's Base W/Sunset Pink combos. Also trying a few new combos myself and just got Alabaster in my collection-eager to see how it fares. We are all so very happy to see your sweet face, and that you are creating! Stay warm dear friend!
🥰🥰🥰 you are always so kind!! It feels great creating again, both pottery and film production…practice makes improvements! That’s great you organized your “studio” to begin glazing indoors..trust me I get it, January was particularly bitter, and sooo much snow up here I wouldn’t want to be in my garage working! 🥶 I can’t wait to hear how the AB and Sunset Pink turn out for you! 🤗
@@SarahWaltonPottery just about ready to load the kiln.... really hoping "Life" affords you more muddy days....
Ohhh this is so exciting!! Let me know how it turns out!!
@@SarahWaltonPottery we got a nice thick layer of ice last night, now today inches of snow arriving, just lost power for about 15min, but the kiln is still heating up. I am on a snowday from work so glazing some more items, playing with transfers and stroke and cote right now, drooling in anticipation of my first SW's Archie's Base-Sunset Pink Combos! and a few re-fire/glazes from old kiln. Girl you got me drooling on the combos you manage. Stay warm and safe.
Loved your textured jars.. haven’t tried these combos ! I will need try as we are limited to glazes available. Thanks so much for sharing❤
Thank you Dena!!
I know it’s been frustrating, supply chain issues are just everywhere!!
I have been patiently waiting for some more of your ideas using black clay. I own several glazes including AC and never thought to use it on black clay. I make decorative vases and, like you, always allow some of the clay to show. Please show more combinations that are appropriate for using with black clay. I enjoy watching your videos and look forward to more in the future.
Thank you very much! I can certainly do that, tho it may take a bit because I haven’t thrown black clay for a min, tho I have some in the studio. Have you tried Textured Turquoise under oatmeal, that looks gorgeous and sells quickly! I also love my pink glaze coyote’s Archie’s Base over Sunset Pink..the combo is striking! I plan on adding some more glaze to a couple of pieces and refiring bcuz they didn’t turn out as planned so if they work I’ll put them in a video😉 thanks for your continued support 🤗🙏
I don’t know why I never was aware of this video until today since I am a subscriber? In any case you are the reason I tried black clay and have made some interesting pieces that I would like to share with you but do not know how to attach to this comment. In any case I plan to try these layering combinations once I make some new black pottery. If you could send me your email address, I could show you some of the work you have inspired. Can hardly wait for another black clay video.
I’m so pleased to here of your success with black clay! And yes I’d love to see pictures of your work. My email addy: sarahwaltonpottery@gmail.com
Looking forward to hearing from you!
This was great to see. I've always had a problem with those potter's choice metallic glazes just coming out a dull brown. From your video I now know I've not put on nearly enough.
I hope you get happy results now!! 😊
Very cool! They are gorgeous!!
Thanks Julie! I appreciate that! 🥰🥰🥰
inspiring!
Thank you!! ☺️
So beautiful and attractive
Thank you!
Thanks 😍😍❤️🔥
I’m glad you liked it!
Good and Perfect
Thank you!
Great Video… Love your pottery Style… greetings from Germany 🙋🏻♀️☺️
Hi Tania! Thanks, I’m so glad you like my work! I’d love to one day go to Germany and stay in one of those beautiful castles! So much history in Europe! I have a question for you, are you able to get Amaco , Mayco and Coyote glazes in Europe? I use them the most but I’m curious if they are available in your market.
@@SarahWaltonPottery Hi Sarah, hope you get a chance to do a great trip to Europe sometime. I live in a very good place in Germany. 15 minutes from France, 1 hour to Switzerland. In Germany you can also buy Amaco , Spectrum and Mayco glazes. Coyote however not. I order my glazes in Poland though. There the Amaco glazes cost about 13 € . And delivery costs are also cheap. Here in Germany we have Botz glazes. They are very nice and also very popular. Is there Botz in Canada ?
Oh thank you for this info now I feel more confident sharing my glazee combos since it’s available! I’ve heard of Botz but have yet to find a supplier here in Canada, it might be available in the US my next trip across the border I’ll have to investigate 🧐..wow on your home front! It sounds so exotic to have such amazing access to these countries within an hour!! Incredible!! Thanks again, cheers!
Another great video! Thanks!
Thank you Lorelei!! 🥰🥰🥰
Beautiful ❤️ combos
Thank you Kathryn!! 🥰
you should make a video showing how you make these jars
Thank you for your suggestion! I need to make some more bottles so I’ll absolutely make a video.. 😁🤗
I'd be interested to see you compare your glaze combos on different clay bodies, same pieces.
Hi Dawn! Thanks for this suggestion, I can totally do that! 😊😊😊
Great
Gorgeous bottle! How expensive r the glazes? The Ancient copper is amazing💚
It varies depending on what part of the world you are in. Here in Canada a pint of glaze is roughly $20-$25. 😊😊
I've been having trouble with the black clay in my area, Utah, finding glazes that work. Thank you for the ideas. Also, have to ask. My maiden name is Walton. Do you have any relatives in western US?
Hi! I don’t think I have relatives in Western US..my Dad has been working on and off on our family tree, I’ll have to ask. I know he’s traced my family from Barbados and England. I know he connected with some distant cousins in Manitoba, he hasn’t mentioned the US. 6 degrees of separation…you never know 😊
@@SarahWaltonPottery My ancestors come from England and Scotland. I bet we have a common distant cousin. :)
Love your videos, Great for us beginners. Thanks.,,, where do you get the black clay?
Thanks Matt! The black clay in this video is made by PSH (Pottery Supply House) number 540i. It’s a lovely clay to work with!
Loved this video I've only just found you altho I've been potting for about 5 years.i handbuild but always trying to figure when enough is enough with glaze, thickness as well as how many coats to apply. Amazing your video,I mix all my own glazes from scratch ,but want a more translucent effect on some so might have to buy some ready mix ones.altho that's going to work out much more expensive,do you have any suggestions. Please keep yr videos going,I'm loving them
Hi Shirley!! I’m so sorry I did not see your comments!! Thank you sooo much! I only use commercial glazes tho maybe one day will experiment. Try Amaco Celedon glaze, they are lovely sheer glazes..that’s my only experience with translucent glaze.
As for more content…ive got some good stuff coming 😉
Thank you for yr reply..im ordering the Caledon glaze as we can get that one here in nz..
Hi Sarah. Me again ha ha. I know this was a long time ago that you posted this video. As you know I love everything that you do!
would you mind sharing where you get your cork pumps from, I've looked on Amazon prices are absolutely ridiculous. im in Saskatchewan I think your in Ontario right?
Hi Julie!! Thank you and Yes, I'm in Ontario.. I ordered a bunch of stoppers from a few places, if you speaking about the soap dispenser, try PSH I order lots of things from them as they are a bit far for me, shipping is reasonable and they are very helpful and offer discounts for buying more...(btw They are in Oakville ON) here's the link:
psh.ca/collections/dispensers/products/white-soap-dispenser-pump-cork-collar
I also ordered corks from them, various sizes, check out their site they got lots of goodies for potters!!! as for the metal/rubber stoppers, I did get them on amazon. see if this is better... 😉

@@SarahWaltonPottery thanks totally forgot about them. way cheaper than Amazon
What firing schedule did you use as I’ve had a few things go wrong firing Potters choice glazes? Just subscribed I enjoyed the video very much. 😃 Thank you 😊
Hi Lynne, thank you for your support!! I have a very old kiln sitter kiln. I try to fire to a cone 6, my middle shelf is the hottest and can reach 6.5 almost 7. As my kiln in manual I have to flick switches to add more heat so I do so 1 every 2 hours, with the lid propped. Once I get to the last of the 4 switches I close the lid. It takes about 9-10 hours to switch off. I don’t usually do a hold and it’s a natural cool down. I’m not sure how that all translates to an electronic firing schedule. 🤔 hope that helps! 😊
@@SarahWaltonPottery thank you Sarah to such a comprehensive answer to my query, will have a think about how it translates to my kiln 😃👍
I love your videos, but have not seen any recently. Did i miss something? Can you tell me if you are using chocolate clay by Plainsman? Hope you come back with more videos!!
Hi Sue, thank you! I haven’t posted anything recently, I had to take a step back, however I’m not gone!! I hope to be back in studio throwing/filming/editing in the coming weeks!
These pots are made with Pottery Supply House - PSH 540i black clay. Mind you, I’d love to try out the Plainsman Chocolate but none of the supply houses in Ontario carry it 🤔😊
What are your favourite kind of videos? I have a plan for some content but I’m always open to suggestions too! 😉🤭
@@SarahWaltonPottery My favourite videos are the ones that show glaze layering from application to final product. I use all commercial glazes, including opulence and kiln openings are the most special to me. But I like to hear explanations as they are removed from kiln. I am lucky to live in Brockville - I am 1.5 hours from Laval Quebec, where SIAL pottery is and I can easily slip down there and purchase the coffee coloured clay. On my list of places to go this summer. I can let you know how it is for throwing. You do have the best glaze videos and I know since I watch pretty much all of them.
Hi Sue, thank you for this!! I checked out SIAL’s website and I’m glad to see that they carry the chocolate clay. It is just gorgeous!🤩🤩 I may try ordering from them if the shipping isn’t outrageous. Yes please keep me informed with your thoughts and experience with this clay as I will pay it forward! I have a lot of glazing to do so I will definitely share in an upcoming video…By the way, I think I’ve figured out what went wrong with my editing software so with that said I should be delivering a video in the coming weeks! 🤞
Lovely work. Do you find any issue with contamination of your tools/batts/equipment when using the black clay - or do you keep sets for each type used?
Hi Ian, I don’t have any issues switching out the various clays that I use. I clean everything in between but use the same tools, bats, etc. I do have various reclaiming buckets for each of the clays, that’s as far as I go for separation. It hasn’t been a problem for me so far. I’m glad you enjoy my, thanks! 🤗🙏
Hi! I’ve been loving watching your videos, as I am VERY new to this (I’m taking a beginners college course so I’m soaking up every hour I have in the studio)! What do you recommend are good general colors to start with as I layer? I’ve noticed you start with some lighter neutral tones and add some color on top (especially for the drip technique)! Given that I have some pretty general glaze choices, what do you recommend I start with? Thanks!!
Hi Macey! Thank you for watching! You are going to love pottery!! Your question doesn’t have a straight answer, glazing is rather complicated because there are so many variables..like so many. Your results are impacted by the clay you use, the temperature of the kiln, how you layer the glazes, placing one on top of the other you may not get the same results in the opposite order!! Glazing can be very frustrating, hence why I’ve been doing more videos on that, potters don’t often share their glazing because it took years of trial and error. Failure, after failure until they get it right. Some of my favourite glazes, Potters Choice - Texture Turquoise, Blue Rutile, Lustrous Jade, Dark Green. I just bought Emerald Falls, I haven’t tried it yet but I think I’m going to like, a lot. Mayco glazes, Norse Blue, Frosted Lemon, Winterwood, Lavender Mist. Coyote Glazes, Archie’s Base (a must). That’s a good start if you like the glazes that I use…good luck, and keep watching 😉😊
Sadly the ancient copper has been discontinued. Do you know why as I am sure that it is a very popular glaze, PC53.
I herad the same thing, then I heard that it's not and its been reformulated...I will have to look into it further...but it seems to be promising that its probably just being reformulated! 🤞
@@SarahWaltonPottery could you let me know if you have any luck Sarah. Most appreciated.
What clay are you using
I’m using PSH (Pottery Supply House) Black clay 540i. Its really a deep dark brown but they call it Black.
Hope you make a new video soon :)
I’m working on it! 😊
What are your favourite kind of videos and topics??
@@SarahWaltonPottery Looking forward to it :)
