I'm in constant awe at the difference between an unfired and fired piece. Some weird blobby kindergarteny-looking colour scheme magically turns into all those subtle tones and blends and streaks... so very cool. The before-and-after shots are super helpful. Thanks!
@@ThePotteryWheel Unrelated to layers... I've been experimenting with using cling wrap as a release agent for plaster models of glass bowls, etc. If you're interested I'll post a note if I have success.
@@ThePotteryWheel Amazingly I found a very easy solution! I sprayed the exterior of a large bowl with mold release. I do a fair amount of silicone casting, so it was a universal mold release which I had on hand; but, I'd almost sure a cooking spray could be used too - waay cheaper. After spraying with mold release I used a hake brush to dust the exterior with cornstarch. When I went to invert the whole casting, the bowl FELL OUT with no additional effort! 😲 I have to do a better job the plaster- too many bubbles on the flatish base of the bowl. But the technique worked far better than I'd expected. I plan to make a short video and post it on my youtube channel after I have a more "professional" production.
Great looking clean and crisp load. Nice reference system if only I remembered to take the pictures, I number my pots and record the glazes accordingly. This way I am less likely to forget. Neat video.
I have a phone app so I keep my phone close when I'm glazing and input everything as well as pictures. I fire in a community kiln so I don't have control over this part. These glaze combos are really nice.

Do you mind listing what kind of kiln you have an either list the specs or tell me where I could find them?
Hi Michelle, it's a Cromartie 40L kiln. It's very old. I bought it second-hand. Judging by the user manual I got with it, I'd say it was made in the 80's. It had been sitting in someones garage for years and hadn't been used for ages. But they aren't in production anymore. What country are you in, and I may be able to suggest something similar though...
Love your glazes and huge respect for you sharing your glazes. I suck with color combination but I can make any thing on the wheel. I will definitely try your ideas and make sure you get the credit. Where do you find the glazes, did you get them pre mixed or made them from raw materials?
Hi Jason, thanks for your lovely comment. The glazes are premixed they are mostly from the Potters Choice range by Amaco. I've just started making my own glazes, so that feels like another learning curve!
I found the blue rutile and Smokey merlot, wasn’t sure if you did the Smokey on top and blue on the bottom (no over lap) but trying that now. Could not get pallidum from where I can order from but was told pewter is the same and that black patent is the same as obsidian. Luckily they were able to get those in. I find it odd that my copper red blue rutile and smoke merlot are all the same red color glaze. Makes it hard to see what’s what. I tried to see the before pic of your Smokey merlot and blue rutile but there wasn’t one. But I made some test vases and we shall see. Sadly since I don’t have my own kiln I don’t get to load or run it like I would like to (that’s at the studio), but oh well. Definitely gave me some good ideas, so fingers crossed. The brands you have I can get through the pottery place I fire at, but it takes forever like 3 months forever. So was trying to cross reference some of them with georgies glazed since those take like a week to get in. In all fairness some ones one you should try is Georgies blue crackle, and maco carribean blue under glaze has amazing results, also mystery magic and copper red is fabulous (use mystery magic under it first and only the very top), I would show pics but no idea how to load them on here. I love the before pic what you did and after. I usually write it down what I did and say good or bad. But changing that, it’s good to see what you did.

The Smokey merlot and rutile blue turned out great, I did the top half Smokey and bottom rutile, and it bled pretty neat. I also did a mystery magic (one I made, over a red that turned out fantastic. Found the other glazes so experimental time.
Hi, I just got a 40 litre kiln and I´m wondering, if you put your first shelf directly on the bottom of the kiln. There are no heating elements in the bottom of my kiln. If I use the 5cm risers on the bottom I loose a lot of space. Thank you, I love your work.
Hello I don't put the kiln shelf directly on the base of the kiln, I put it on three short kiln posts that are about an inch high. but I know what you mean it is a pain to lose the space.
They are all beautiful!! Just one question...are they all food safe? I made a bowl with 3 amaco glazes which I layered, and someone informed me that even though all 3 amaco glazes were considered food safe on their own, once layered, the composition can change making the ware unsafe for food consumption. I was told by amaco it’s best to use a liner glaze, one glaze, or use the celadons which can be layered without compromising the chemistry. They said use the layering on the outside only. Just curious if you were able to test your ware?

The reason why the celadon are compatible is because their base recipe is the same. I heard all the amaco celadons have the same base, only different coloring oxides. That way the chemistry doesn't change when you layer them.
Hi Julia, it was brushed on, and I just do 3 layers of one colour around a band of the cup. What I mean, is I don't do a base and then put 3 layers on top. Just the 3 coats. Hope that helps :)
That was the same question I had and wondered if they were overlapped each band separately placed on the dry bisqued section. The written combinations are quite helpful but it is difficult to know which comes first if they are in fact layered on one another. I would love to see a video of you doing the layering. Thank you for speaking slowly as I find the English accent difficult to follow at times. Subtitles would be of great help.
@@rOHRshackartpottery Hi there, sorry my reply confused you. How much I overlap the glazes depends on the colours I'm using. I usually put a couple of coats of a base glaze (whichever colour I'm using as the base). Then I put bands of different glaze around the mug on top of the base colour. I may put 2 or 3 layers on the band. And the bands normally overlap a little. Somewhere between a few mm or a cm. Hope that helps.

You generally don't need to use cone packs in an electric kiln.
