King's idea for the Doctor Sleep book came when somebody asked him at a book signing about what happened to Danny after The Shining and he thought about it himself and decided to write a story dealing with it.

Yep, one of the most pleasant surprises of this year for me, too. I loved how Flanagan managed to give a huge respect to Kubrick's version while keeping King's version intact. Hell, he even managed to find actors who resemble strikingly well with the ones in Kubrick's movie. Kudos!
Mike Flanagan incorporates elements from the novel version of The Shining that Kubrick omitted. For those who love the novel version and were bitter ( me) these elements are only slight. But for us novel fans, it makes watching Doctor Sleep a joy. Take Your Medicine was a line that terrified me as a kid. It reminded me of my dad. I want to praise Henry Thomas for making his Jack Torrence a very real embodiment of how the character was written. I cannot be the only one who see elements of Jack Nicholson in Henry's performance. This is one of the best horror films to have come along.

I love that you touched so much on Rebecca Ferguson and how hard it is to hate her like you're supposed to hate the villain lol. Especially after the kid scene which in and of itself had me FLOORED. That was ballsy. But omg, I was still almost rooting for her and was mad at myself for it. She stole the whole movie and I'm still obsessed with her.
I swear dude, this movie was so great and so perfect, there were so many nods to The Shining (which is one of my favorite movies ever) and recreating the characters of that movie and then the emotion in this movie when people die and how masterful the horror aspects were in this movie, it damn near makes me cry because of how rare of a movie like this is nowadays with all the bullshit CGI jumpy shit movies.
This is easily one of the greatest horror movie sequels I've ever seen. It was really well done. As for the runtime, the 3 hour director's cut works really well despite being so long, and there's plenty of added scenes that just make things much more disturbing by simply alluding to something, and not throwing it in your face. Plus the director's cut adding the "Chapter" titles for every segment was such a good idea.
Having read the book, I believe Flanagan did an excellent job with this adaption of Doctor Sleep. Yes, I totally agree with you Cody that Rose the Hat is such a wonderful villain and I would love to see Rebecca Ferguson come back to play this character. I know this will be on my Top 10 Best Horror movies of the year.
Fantastic movie!!! I loved the first two hours most (following the evil exploits of the True Knot and Danny as he stays sober and becomes an orderly in the hospice). I honestly wish there had been more time spent with him as he gave peace to some of the elderly patients- some of my favorite parts.

Doctor Sleep is so good it makes me want to go and read the book. I'm not really a fan of the Shining but this movie actually made the Shining more interesting. A great surprise that one day will be considered a classic in its own right.
My wife and I just saw Dr. Sleep today. The Shining is one of my favorite horror movies of all times, and this one suprised me because how much I loved it. I got the novel Dr. Sleep the day it was released. After I tore through it in a few days I told my wife this could make a great film adaptation. Here it came and I only wanted a decent horror sequel and this film blew me away. I totally agree, this is probably the best horror film and over all film of 2019. The fan service you mentioned was done perfectly. I loved how it included a good bit tribute to shots and cinematography in The Shining. One of my favorites of Dr. Sleep is when Danny an Abra are driving up the mountain to the Overlook and we got the classic high and far sweeping shots reminiscent of Kubrick' s The Shining. Incredible movie, I'm blown away. I want to and probably will go see it in thr theatre again. So glad you enjoyed it as well Cody. Take care, ✌
I recently watched the director’s cut. Normally I feel the additional scenes in a director’s cut are unnecessary. In this case the additional scenes and the breaking up of the movie in chapters took it from an 8 to probably a 9.5.
First time watching one of your reviews. You did an amazing, articulate review! I loved this movie. I love Stephen King's novels. I read The Shining when it first came out. Later saw the movie. Loved them both. Then I read Doctor Sleep some years back, and loved that book. The movie was awesome, and I completely agree with your review. It draws you in, doesn't have unnecessary jump scares, and delves into the life of Danny as an adult. Slow build-up, tension, waiting for what's next. Rose the Hat was unforgettable. I was so drawn to her character (thanks to Rebecca Ferguson's superb acting), and I was almost mad at myself for being a little spellbound by her. Mike Flanagan is a very gifted director. I've seen all his movies and loved them all. I see this review was done 4 years ago. Since then, Flanagan also directed "Midnight Mass", which has become one of my favorite limited series. Could you please do a review on this series? I would love to hear what you think of it. To me, it was not just about "horror". It was so much more. Please, PLEASE do a review of this outstanding series!!! Thank you. New subscriber!
I've been a massive fan of Mike Flanagan from day one - his debut feature Absentia is still one of my favourite films of all time, so it's great to see him landing a major production like this. Agreed on Rose The Hat, an amazingly compelling villain - possibly the first truly iconic female monster? A Rose The Hat prequel please studio folks! (as an aside, watching this was a bit weird for me, as my partner dresses and does her hair like Rose in her everyday life...she's somewhat kinder to children though; nonetheless I've taken to calling her Jules The Hat now.) I liked the fact that this felt like a director's cut - slow burns that explore character and world building are my thing, and I think even though this may have moved at a faster clip with some edits, ultimately that would have diminished the film as a whole. Personally I hope we get a director's cut with even more footage in it when it comes time for a home release.
Finally watched Doctor Sleep last evening. Managed to avoid spoilers for over 2 years and am very thankful that I did. What a Film this was. I loved the nods to the Shining. Nothing was done solely as fan service like you see in the David Gordon Green Halloween Series. Extremely heavy handed fan service bothers the hell out of me. This movie was absolutely haunting. I definitely did not expect them go where they did with the Children. Now after I’ve watched I’m sitting here the day after thinking about the horrors, pain, and fear that “Young Nell” from the beginning of the film had to have endured to fill a canister for the Cult folk. Love a movie that sticks with you after you watch and my goodness this on does. This was a Brilliant Film and you can tell Mike Flanagan has a love for the Shining and King. 2.5 hours for this film is why it has taken me this long to start it. My attention span is not suited for a 2.5 hour movie. But it didn’t really feel like a long film for me. A lot of the filler (Snake girl, Danny getting Sober, Grim Reaper Kitty) I was completely on board for. Excellent review Mr Leach and thank you for all that you do for us nerds. Also, I am 100% on board for a “Rose the Hat” Prequel film.
Glad you enjoyed it. I'm a massive fan of the original and read both books back to back last year so was was very apprehensive for it. The casting was really good and it's a great film and a great adaptation which made good changes to the book. You'll be hard pressed to find a better Stephen king adaptation in recent years and years to come.
OMG Cody! that was the longest review ive ever seen..LOL..Appreciate your thoughts.Im glad to know you are a big fan of The Shining. Its in my top 5 horror/psych movies of all time. I watch it about 2-3 times a year. Jack Nicholson did such a great job and actually so did Shelley Duvall. Its so well done from the score to the cinematography to the cast to the sets, script, etc. You have to stop what you are doing just so you can totally pay attention to whats happening. And NO, they dont make them like this anymore.
I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I read the book, Dr. sleep, and you basically described everything that happens in the book even though you didn’t read the book. It’s nice to know that the movie pretty much follows the book to a T, while also changing certain things around to fit the movie. I’m so glad that the reviews that I’ve seen thus far have been really good and I can’t wait to see it whether I see it on digital download or I have the chance to see it in the theater.
I am a fan of both the novels and the films, and for me, Doctor Sleep is like the end of a family feud. That both Stephen King and Stanley Kubrick's estate to sign off on this adaptation is an accomplishment in itself! Mike Flanagan, at last, comes out as one of the really great directors of the new generation. I am eager to see where he goes next! Great review, Cody! New subscriber!
For me, 2019 has been such a dissapointment, especially for horror films I wanted to be great, but weren't, like "Midsommar," like "Us," like "The Lighthouse." I walked out of this movie, almost teary eyed, because all I wanted was for this to be good and it instantly became my favorite film of 2019. Fantastic review and I loved it!
Hey Cody, just bought/watched the Steelbook Directors Cut. OMG is it incredible. Whether it be entire scenes or just a moment or two added to the theatrical version the difference is astounding. It takes an already incredible movie and makes it just out of this world. It explains so so much more about each character and backstory. Have you bought the steelbook of this yet? If so, did you watch the directors cut, or just watch the theatrical version on 4K?
I just bought and watched Doctor Sleep and saw the Director's Cut. I thought it was awesome!! Are you going to do a review of it? If you already have, sorry. I know you love the theatrical version, but the Director's Cut adds so much more!
Nice review, Cody! I thought this was a really nice follow up that balances both King and Kubrick's styles. You make a good point about the Snakebite Andi character (and subplot) being fairly unnecessary though.
Movie was awesome and brought a tear to my eye. The themes of alcoholism and Dan paying tribute to his dad at the AA meeting, and the bar scene at the Overlook. Also the theme about people going on after they pass away.
Great review man. Really enjoyed this film, thought it was great. Good nostalgia, but also was it's own thing. 4.5/5 for me.🤘loved child's play too.!!!😁
Surprised you haven’t seen The Lighthouse. Been hearing nothing but positive feedback on that. My gf and I are seeing it tomorrow. Might try to see Dr Sleep next week
Every time I think of Rose The Hat, an old Frankie Laine song, "ROSE, ROSE, I LOVE YOU," sounds through my head. Do any of you know that song? By the way, despite her evil, I didn't think that Rose The Hat was in the least bit scary.
I didn't like this movie on first viewing then I sat down and watched the directors cut and fell in love with it. Completely changed my opinion on the movie.
Cody I think we are the only two people who see Blumhouse for what they are. As for Dr. Sleep, I made it about ten pages into the book and put it down. I'm sure it was a good read, I just could not reconcile the fact that I read the original Shining book one time years ago, but saw the drastically different movie probably fifty times. I'm glad Mike Flannigan is attempting to meld the Dr. Sleep book with the Shining movie. Catching it this weekend.
Hell No it's not too drawn out! I love the directors cut even more!!! Absolutely love all the characters! Kyliegh Curran & Rebecca Ferguson are standout performances. As Cody always says, a favorite movie has to have that rewatchability and this movie has it in spades!!!
just saw the film, Fantastic!! I'm not a huge Ewan McGregor fan, but he was incredible in this. Cody, I believe you said that you liked that they recasted Wendy Torrance and Dick Halloran as opposed to using the original actors in a digital way, How right you are!!! The actor who plays Dick Halloran is so "frighteningly" close to the actual actor I was just blown away His voice, way of movig, mannerisms.... just riveting. I thought the girl who played Abra was brilliant too . Have never seen her in anything before, at least that I know of
I love “The shining” movie and book. If you judge them both separately and don’t compare them, they are both great. I love “Dr sleep” movie and book and I feel like they are very close to each other. The antagonist Rose is absolutely one of the best villains I’ve ever seen and I was so pleasantly surprised when I saw it.
I loved the cat. So perfect to add that mythos that cats can travel across boundaries of life and death .like in Coraline or Egyptian lore. Also the quote from John Lennon from his Shine On song where King got his idea for the name of Danny's power.
Great Review! Loved this film, but now that you mention it, it really does have some directors cut feel to it (which I guess makes sense because the Director was also the Editor).
the 1 complaint you have ..in the book that's how they introduced the true knot... I can't wait to see this movie.. been excited since I herd they were adapting it
Saw "Doctor Sleep" on Sunday and loved every minute of it. Mike Flanagan is the best thing to happen to horror/suspense/thrillers in a long time. And the dude just gets Stephen King. Can't wait to grab this on BD.
I watched it today, and I thought it was a good film. I felt it was a little slow in the beginning, however, it picked up and kept my attention the whole time.
I'd like to see Flanagan tackle The Stand, Salam's Lot, and especially the Dark Tower series. Oh God let him direct a theatrical, movie series of The Dark Tower. This series has it all... a true epic.
I haven’t read the books yet but I am a fan of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining & I’ve been looking forward to Doctor Sleep since the trailer. It was great! I pretty much feel the same way about this movie that you do, Cody. I loved the good versus evil & the fan service. I’m totally on board for a Rose the Hat movie. 😀
I saw this as my first rated r movie theater movie. It was fantastic. I haven’t seen the shining. It made jump once and shudder a couple of times and that’s why I love this movie a lot!!! I need to see the shining! Love your review man I couldn’t agree more about it being the best horror movie of 2019!
It would interesting to hear your opinion of the book. The first 2/3s are a meandering set of life stories for Rose , Dan and Abra that occasionally crossover with each other.
I highly agreed with you on "Pet Sematary" 2019. I highly disagreed with you on "It: Chapter Two". I'm curious to see where I'll stand with "Doctor Sleep".
@The Eternal Induction Nah first one was better. The second one had some problems 😑😑. It was also very cheesy and alot of the jokes were horrible. On the other side of the coin AKA the good side...... Mike's ritual and the character of Mike.
Great review Cody. While I really enjoyed this movie, I think it is blatant false advertising to call it a horror. Sure the film maker had the slow burn to build up "tension" but it never ever ever reaches the point of establishing dread. I see more horrific things in the Yahoo news headlines. Even the creatures at the Overlook were impotent props that registered a negative 5 on the creepy meter. That all being said, I would still recommend this movie. Thanks for the vid!
Excellent review! Fucking loved this film! There were a group of preteens in my screening and I could hear one of them whimpering during THAT brutal scene. It affected me too. One of the most memorable theater experiences I've had all year.
Finally got around to watching this las night, While watching this movie I felt something that a horror movie hasn made me feel in a while, a legit sense of dread and fear for the characters .. it wasn’t the scariest, bloodiest, or most violent type of horror movie, but it kept me intrigued and kept me guessing wha was gonna happen next .. really enjoyed this joint
Great movie completely enjoyed it and your right about Rose the Hat. Great character will become iconic with this film. Great acting great look style to her and the film. Awesome. Rebecca is a tour de force in this film going to see it a second time when I get a chance. Good review Cody. Shape on!!! Shine on!!!!!!🌷rose the Hat ☺
I plan on seeing this on Sunday. I was wanting to know how you liked it. I actually read both books and wondered how they would do the movie. I wasn't thrilled that they changed it to be a sequel to the movie and not a sequel to the book. The book was great though, so here we go
Mike Flanagan is becoming rapidly in a must-see director for me. If he pulled this off the man is a force to be reckoned with in the genre

Thank you
I've been a massive fan of Mike Flanagan from day one - his debut feature Absentia is still one of my favourite films of all time, so it's great to see him landing a major production like this.
Agreed on Rose The Hat, an amazingly compelling villain - possibly the first truly iconic female monster? A Rose The Hat prequel please studio folks! (as an aside, watching this was a bit weird for me, as my partner dresses and does her hair like Rose in her everyday life...she's somewhat kinder to children though; nonetheless I've taken to calling her Jules The Hat now.)
I liked the fact that this felt like a director's cut - slow burns that explore character and world building are my thing, and I think even though this may have moved at a faster clip with some edits, ultimately that would have diminished the film as a whole.
Saw Doctor Sleep tonight, Cody is 100% on point, amazing movie!! Go see it!
You nailed this review. This movie blew me away. I had no expectations at all and this was a breath of fresh air
Great review Cody Leach we got to spread the word on this one
Love the film feel like Ewan mcgregor is back and agree about the villain she was unreal also the last 30 mins was fan service at it’s finest
I think Snakebite Andi's storyline actually was important to introduce the true knot. Everything we learned we learned through her eyes.
Just saw this tonight, absolutely phenomenal! Had me sucked in from the first 5 minutes
So glad this film was done right and was waiting for your take on it Cody :)
The shining is one of my favourites and I absolutely loved this movie. The scene with the little boy was hard to watch though. Great review
Love that Alter Bridge shirt my man! I loved this film, the Shining is my all-time favorite horror film, and this was a great sequel.
Nice review, Cody! I thought this was a really nice follow up that balances both King and Kubrick's styles. You make a good point about the Snakebite Andi character (and subplot) being fairly unnecessary though.
You HAVE to watch The directors cut!
4.5/5 for me.🤘loved child's play too.!!!😁
Just got back from seeing it. One of the better all time sequels. Loved it
Same here Cody I had zero expectations for this movie and I walked out of the theater with the biggest smile on my face, I loved it
The thing is really loved how fast Rose The Head and her gang went from scaring villians, to SCARED AF villians.
Surprised you haven’t seen The Lighthouse. Been hearing nothing but positive feedback on that. My gf and I are seeing it tomorrow. Might try to see Dr Sleep next week
I’m with you Rose the Hat movie! 🤘🏻I’ve only just watched the shining and dr sleep this October and I loved them both and she did stand out ❤
I've seen the 3 hour director's cut. I thought it was excellent. I didn't think it was bloated or padded at all. I loved it.
You completely blown me away with this Review" just as Much as Dr.SLEEP has done for me. I definitely subbed 😁
Thank you
Every time I think of Rose The Hat, an old Frankie Laine song, "ROSE, ROSE, I LOVE YOU," sounds through my head. Do any of you know that song? By the way, despite her evil, I didn't think that Rose The Hat was in the least bit scary.
I didn't like this movie on first viewing then I sat down and watched the directors cut and fell in love with it. Completely changed my opinion on the movie.
Cody is one of the best movie reviewers on YT. Should have 10x more subs.
This movie was a pleasant surprise and I find myself rewatching it from time to time. I agree on Rose the Hat
Hell No it's not too drawn out! I love the directors cut even more!!! Absolutely love all the characters! Kyliegh Curran & Rebecca Ferguson are standout performances. As Cody always says, a favorite movie has to have that rewatchability and this movie has it in spades!!!
Loved it too! Yet another great review, Cody! Always love your perspective.
Thank you!
just saw the film, Fantastic!! Have never seen her in anything before, at least that I know of
Yes! The entire time I was trying to think of what this film reminded me of and you're right, it's the characters from Near Dark!
As a huge King fan and a fan of the Kubrick film - I loved this movie and agree with everything you said. So, so, so good.
I can't wait to see this movie.. been excited since I herd they were adapting it
I am so excited about this movie Cody. Thank you for your review. I can not wait to go see it now!!
Cody is on point on horror in 2019 i agree and with doctor sleep
I saw this as my first rated r movie theater movie. It was fantastic. I haven’t seen the shining. It made jump once and shudder a couple of times and that’s why I love this movie a lot!!! I need to see the shining! Love your review man I couldn’t agree more about it being the best horror movie of 2019!
I loved the Pokémon reference. A psychic named Abra and the first thing we see her do is a trick with spoons.
That Alter Bridge shirt though! My favorite band 🔥🔥🔥
Cody Throwin Shade On Blumhouse ;) Great Review Man
It would interesting to hear your opinion of the book.
It Chapter two was fine.
@The Eternal Induction Nah first one was better. The second one had some problems 😑😑. It was also very cheesy and alot of the jokes were horrible. On the other side of the coin AKA the good side...... Mike's ritual and the character of Mike.
@The Eternal Induction first one wasn't mediocre
The Eternal Induction yeah I prefer the adults over the kids too actually.
I know this was 5 years ago, but this really was one of the best movies of the year! So glad I took my mom to see it 😊
Great review Cody.
That intro was great 😂😂😂
Excellent review! Fucking loved this film! There were a group of preteens in my screening and I could hear one of them whimpering during THAT brutal scene. It affected me too. One of the most memorable theater experiences I've had all year.
Finally watched Doctor Sleep. I loved it. It’s definitely it’s own movie and the throwbacks to The Shining were icing on the cake! 👍🏻👍🏻
Can't wait to see it a second time. Best show this year. Rose the Hat Iconic. Shine on!!!!!!!!!!
Mark Warling She’s amazing, cant get enough cred for her performance. There should be a prequel to show the true Knot’s backstory.
Yes I agree a prequel
Finally got around to watching this las night, While watching this movie I felt something that a horror movie hasn made me feel in a while, a legit sense of dread and fear for the characters .. it wasn’t the scariest, bloodiest, or most violent type of horror movie, but it kept me intrigued and kept me guessing wha was gonna happen next .. really enjoyed this joint
I was wanting on your review on this one. We pretty much have same taste it seems. I will go see it tomorrow. :p
