Thanks a ton for checking this out! It was a blast to put together and share our passion for the Master System. I know you’re a pretty big fan of it yourself 🤙🏻
You can really see that it is a US channel. Unfortunately, most of the really good master system games are not named that way, because EU only. the master system was extremely strong in europe in the early 90's, and the games that came out at that time were on a completely different level technically and in terms of gameplay, than the 80's master system games. Closer to 16 bit Genesis games than NES games. If you are impressed by R Type, you should take a look at Power Strike 2, for example
Here in the UK the Master System was super popular because it was such an huge upgrade over the microcomputers we had at the time. Hardware scrolling, 32 colors wow!
I'm jealous how popular it was in the UK. You guys got some amazing games for it. I know it's region free so I've imported a few over here. Thanks for watching!
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames I had one and one other kid in my hood in Glendale Arizona... I have a nostalgia for it that most ppl in the USA dont understand
I'm from the UK, still own my OG system from 87.. Master System Plus version I have.. reason it done so well was it had backing by Virgin Mastertronics in the UK.. Tonka in the US.. US market loved the Nintendo to much. Been a SEGA fan before the Master System...my first console I owned.
That’s so cool that R Type was your favorite game! The 90s was a great time and I have lots of memories playing it. I have many more Master System videos on my channel including retrospectives, countdowns etc…
I lived in an apartment complex and had an NES from my grandparents. I used to routinely trade systems/games with a neighbor kid around the corner from me.
That's awesome! It's fun to trade games/consoles with others and experience new games. Hopefully you were able to play the SMS at some point. Thanks for watching!
I love and grew up with the Master System here in Australia and remember owing most of the games in the video oh the memories of playing my Master System with my friend games like all Wonder Boy games and Wonder Boy Dragon Traps is one of favourite great video I really enjoyed it 👍
Super cool to hear an Aussie enjoy the Master System! The Wonder Boy games are amazing, they are true adventure classics and I love replaying them. Thanks for watching and leaving a great comment.
I had a Master System when I was younger. It was also one of my first consoles. Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap will always be my favorite Master System game, and the 2017 remake with the hand-drawn graphics also looks good.
Wonder Boy III the dragons trap is very near and dear to me too. I have great memories playing it as a kid. The remake is excellent and it’s a real treat to play. Always fun to meet another SMS fan. Thanks for watching!
Good choice, there are twice as many levels on the japanese game. Even the ending of the game is weirdly philosophical, you just gotta love the Master System. Here is the script : “Enduro” is a symbolic journey through life via the media of a race. The results are insignificant and what really counts is competing. Of particular importance are the lessons to be learned concerning one’s self from the various encounters you experience along the way. There is no victor or loser in this test of endurance. The only thing that really matters is that you make a commitment to begin the long and trying trek. This game is then dedicated to all of the “life riders” who have started out on the solitary trip to find their own individual limits. Last, but not least, may we sincerely congratulate you on a perfect run.
I remember as a small child My father getting me a master system way before I ever got an NES. To this day, he still brings up the game Gangster Town which I never see anyone mention. We spent a lot of hours with that when I was 4 years old me and my dad.
Haha, Gangster Town! Now they did some pretty cool stuff with it. I like the car chasing segments. Sounds like you have a cool dad, love to hear it. Thanks for watching!
The Master System was my 3rd home console, after the 2600 and Colecovision. I’ll never forget the first time I beat Shinobi, all that work and you get no ending, just a game over screen. Time Soldiers, Spellcaster, and Space Harrier were some other of my favorites. The Master System also has what I consider to be the best version of Rampage.
Choplifter was the reason I told my parents to get me SMS over a NES. To this day it remains one of my favorites. Quartet, Zillion, Phantasy star.. were among my favorites as well.
Man, I love to hear it! Choplifter was one of the first games I ever played and I love that you chose the SMS over the NES. You were a rare one! All three that you named are wonderful games. Great that you found this video. Thanks for watching and dropping a comment!
For anyone that doesn't know, Wonderboy 3 got a remake in a beautiful hand drawn artstyle. I can confirm, as someone whose introduction to the game was this 2017 remake that Wonderboy: The Dragon's Trap is a perfect Metroidvania that should be in any 2D lover's collection. Go buy it now. It's on every modern console.
I fully endorse this! The remake is amazing and I love the style they went with. It was terrific to see that game on current consoles. Thanks for watching and giving input.
I think Alex the Kidd in Miracle World got a remake/remaster too. Sadly, I'm still waiting on a faithful Sonic the Hedgehog Master System port as Sega keeps bringing over the objectively worse Game Gear version.
I just started collecting for this system last year! Grew up a huge NES and then Genesis fan. Never had a chance to play the SMS as a kid. But the three I have loved discovering that don't end up on most lists, Jurassic Park, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, and Dynamite Dux! I had to import all of my games from the UK because finding Master System games near me is impossible.
Hey, congrats on your journey! There are so many great games that you’ll discover for it. Jurassic park is pretty good along with Dynamite Dux. I’ve imported quite a few games from the UK as well. I love that they are region free. Hope you have lots more fun ahead of you on the SMS. Thanks for watching!
Excellent vid! Very polished! I feel a little fish-out-of-water here just because I didn't have access to Segas growing up. I saw the ads and wanted to play the games, but I didn't know anyone who owned one, so it was just the NES for me. I like that you guys didn't just retread over the classics, but looked deep for some games not everyone has heard of or played. I definitely gamed in that era though, so I am still envious of how good Sega titles looked compared to many I played on the NES.
Thanks for the kind words! They ran Sega ads on C-Span!? Neat! The NES in its own right was amazing so you still got an awesome experience. If you ever have the opportunity to get a SMS it’s so affordable to collect for. There’s some real doozies for it.
I absolutely love The Master System! It was my first console and the only one that I never got rid of at any point. I have all of my original games and my model 2 system. And now I have every game in this video.
Awesome to hear that you still have your original! That was my original that I’m holding up in the video. I’ve really enjoyed collecting for it since then. Lots of great games and I’m happy to hear that you have the games that were on our list.
Phantasy Star is the crown jewel of the Master System, and one game that is absolutely superior to its NES counterparts, Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior. Graphically, narratively, artistically, it's just so fully realized. Even the music beats out Uematsu's first FF soundtrack. It would take until the SNES for any Final Fantasy game to equal it. Give it a shot with the Sega Ages: Phantasy Star release on Switch. You won't regret it.
You said it best! Phantasy Star is incredible from start to finish with so many different aspects. I was blown away when I played it and it's such a great adventure that every Master System owner should take. I'll have to try out Sega Ages, thanks for the suggestion.
R-Type on the Master System is so graphically impressive for an 8 bit system ! I love the game . Also Rampage on the Master System is an amazing port i think anyone who likes the arcade original ahould definitely check it out .
Great suggestion with Rampage! My first introduction to Rampage was on the PS1 and I really enjoyed it. I'll have to go back and check out the SMS version. Thanks for watching!
Really solid list for the Master System. Some alternates would be Enduro Racer and Rocky. Both fun games once you get the hang of the controls but it does take some time. Batman Returns is a lot of fun and the grapple mechanic is a blast.
Awesome collab! This is a console that I've barely ever played on as I had only 1 friend who had one as a kid! For me, it was all able the NES back in the day, but strangely enough, when I got a Genesis at Christmas one year, I switched to team Sega and was on that train until the Dreamcast very end! I don't think that there would be a ton of games that would be up my alley to justify me buying the system but I have a Retron 5 so I'll buy the SMS adapter for it in order to at least play Phantasy Star! Great video and keep up the good work!
Well that one friend of yours was the cool kid! I never knew you liked Sega, I always enjoyed it until I got my PlayStation but I enjoy all brands. I agree there aren’t too many RPGs on the console but Phantasy Star may be the best 8 Bit JRPG ever made so definitely try it out sometime. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching! The Asterix trilogy is a great choice. I just saw a copy of one of them here in the U.S. and it was over $250! Pretty pricey for me.
Hey, long-time Sega fan here! My brother and I also got a Master System for Christmas instead of an NES, at my insistent pleading. Loved the list! All solid choices. I second your Golvellius, Rambo II, Phantasy Star, and Wonder Boy II and III picks. I probably would also have Double Dragon (another 2-player simultaneous romp), Rastan, and Kenseiden on the list, but I admit those picks may be colored by nostalgia. The other one I’d argue for inclusion would be Y’s. It was my first experience with an action RPG, and those tunes are forever burned into my mind (thank you Yuzo Koshiro and Tokuhiko Uwabo and Izuho Nomata). One minor “um, actually” about the video is that the SMS was more powerful than the NES in every facet except sound. Even though I have a soft spot for those SMS square channels, I have to admit it’s objectively outclassed by the NES’ chip. The FM add-on is nice, but we didn’t get to see that here.
Your brother and you had an awesome Christmas! Double Dragon is one that I need to play for myself and haven't yet. I do own Rastan and Kenseiden and while I haven't beaten them, I can see how they should be included. I really want to get into Ys... I don't own it but man do I want to! Thanks for watching!
@@TigerChainsawVideoGamesIf it’s at all possible, when you play Double Dragon, play it with a friend. Two-player action is the main advantage the SMS version had over the NES version at the time, and it makes the game a lot more fun!
Time stamps (first the best): 3:16 - QUARTET 5:30 - Zillion 8:02 - Govellius: Valley Of Doom 10:22 - Phantasy Star 12:45 - Rambo: First Blood Part II 15:13 - Choplifter 18:02 - Wonder Boy In Monster Land 20:04 - Wonder Boy III 22:20 - Shinobi 25:02 - R-Type
I got both my Nes and Master System in 1986 (divorced parents). I loved them both but my Master System was king...whenever I could find new games for it. What really pushed me over the edge into Sega super fandom was the Genesis in 1989. Of course that was helped greatly by a Powerbase Converter and a copy of Phantasy Star. I actually played them both for the very first time back-to-back in early 1990. Incredible video guys! Thank you for the trip down memory lane. Addendum- Where is Rastan? Best Master System lists must contain Rastan! :)
This was such a fun video to put together with Coury! I started off with the Master System and then received a GameBoy and then a PlayStation so I missed out entirely on the Genesis. That's one console that I really need to dig into and play a few games. Phantasy Star is amazing, and I'd love to play the sequels on the Genesis. I actually have Rastan in my collection but have yet to fire it up! With your praise, I'll bump it up the list. Thanks for watching.
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames You my friend are going to love Rastan. It does what R-Type did for the shmup genre on the Master System. This reminds me of something that happened during my childhood. Now, I don't remember the year but it was during the 3rd generation... So in Elementary school I had two very good friends with extremely different tastes. One was a Nintendo diehard fanboy (in the traditional sense) and the other was a huge Atari guy. I was in the middle as I had both the Master System and Nes (divorced parents+ medical disability). I was always cool with the Nes but the Master System felt special. My two friends would make fun of the Master System because too them it lacked big games like the Nes (had everything) and Atari (classics). At the time Rastan was pretty big in the arcades and when I saw it advertised in a Toys R' Us catalog I had to have it. After getting the game I called the two over to "hangout" and maybe play some Sega games. I waited for them both to arrive before playing Rastan... When they both were in my room the "Why can't we play Nintendo..." nonsense immediately started. I said okay but there's something I want to check out first. I slyly wrapped the cart in my hands and popped it into my Master System and their response was pure gold. "Rastan is on the Master System?! Can I play first?!" Nope. I played until they admitted the Master System was an "amazing, great, incredible, bestest ever console they had ever witnessed" then I shared. We played that game so much that my label became damaged and I don't care as it gave it character. ;) Once again, excellent video!
Thanks for watching! Hunting for the Master System is a lot of fun as most games are still affordable and the condition of them are typically good due to the box. Best of luck hunting them down!
Cool list! Wonderboy 3 The Dragon's Trap is 100% my favourite ever SMS game, it kept me entertained for such a long time as a kid. R-Type and Shinobi are my joint second favourites, both phenomenal ports on Sega's humble 8 bit console.
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames yeah, and I always prefered the SMS port because it has less repeated stages;there's a volcano stage,a desert stage,a sky stage,a stage with flying squirrels and a waterfall stage! this alone make it a hell of a lot superior to adventure island!
apart from the original PSG sound chip (wich was upgraded to synth in the japanese market),the SMS was superior to the nes in so many ways,it just lacked third party support and developement due to nintendo's strict exclusivity policy at the time.this said, and even if it was the competition at the time,I'm not into this fanboyish stuff,I liked a lot of nintendo exclusives as well.but man:the SMS has such of soft spot in my heart! :)
Although this was before my time, it was interesting to learn about the history along with some of the most popular games of the Sega Master System! It is crazy to see how far gaming has come! Well done overall!
I'm a big history buff and really enjoy retro video games. This was a fun list to put together and it shows some of my gaming roots. Thanks for checking this out buddy!
One of my best childhood memories was during our school summer holidays. My brother and I were both bored and my dad asked what would help. My brother and I both said a games console and to our absolute amazement our dad drove us to Spa computer center in Leamington Spa U.K and asked us to pick a console and 2 games. We got the master system, R-type & Wonder boy. That console gave us pleasure for years. I still have no idea why he did that as we were not spoilt children and money didn't grow on trees in our house... maybe he did it just to put a smile on our faces 🙂.
Now that is a memory that you will never forget! What an awesome dad and great story. You couldn't have picked two better games either to start your journey on the Master System. That's really cool, I hope you cherish that time forever!
Thank you for watching! Those are some great suggestions. I actually just bought Penguin Land not too long ago so I’m excited to pop it in and give it a try.
Yooooo GP! This is such a great console I love talking about it. I picked up some wonderful PAL games for the SMS while I was in Ireland. Can’t wait to play what you guys experienced across the pond.
Dude, Tiger - FANTASTIC editing in this one! This is documentary caliber work! The cuts to ‘B Roll’ shots mixed in with shots of gameplay backed with the voiceover from MyLifeInGaming was expertly done! You should be proud! As far as a Sega MasterSystem…I actually have never heard of it before until I started doing UA-cam here. I was a Nintendo kid. While the games and graphics look fairly decent, what the HELL were they thinking with that cover art? That stupid grid work on every box (while quickly identifiable as a MasterSystem game) looks f**king HORRENDOUS from a graphic design perspective. 😂 It kind of makes you wonder what they were thinking back then. Even the button layout on the system itself was like, “Sh*t, guys…shouldn’t we try to make it the SLIGHTEST bit nice?” 😅 Awesome stuff, Tiger! Great work putting together this collab! 🤘
Thanks for the compliments buddy! It was a ton of fun to put together with Coury. He did a great job and I was happy to piece it together. It was a great collab, and I'm happy to release it. LOL on the Master System covers, they are... charming... some are just ridiculous, you should look up the cover to "My Hero". I'm not sure about the branding aspect... but at least YOU KNOW when you see a SMS box. Thanks for watching!
Rastan, Black Belt, Enduro Racer, Action Fighter are some including many in your list are in my top 10, I started with a Master System in 1987 as my first home console. Bought with money I had earned babysitting. It was $86.36 at KB toys in the Burnsville Minnesota Mall. Everyone had an NES around me, friends, relatives ect. One good friend had me over to try his master system , I knew then I liked it best. However games like Contra, Castlevania, Metroid, Super Mario made my decision tough. I got a used NES bundle at a great price with those games and a few more in 1989 before the Genesis came out. Rainy day & snow days were alot of fun for me growing up. Nice video, brought back a lot of great memories, thanks!
Love hearing that the Master system was your first console! Sounds like you have some great memories with it. Excellent choices for your must own games too. Enduro Racer is one I just got into my collection. Those snow days were the best filled with video games. Thanks for watching!
Wonderboy III alone is worth owning a Master System to me. There's even a remastered version available from a few years ago for PC and I think some consoles that lets you swap back and forth in real time between new hand-drawn graphics and new covers of the original music or either combo of those 2. Just as fun today as it was a million years ago.
I also have that remastered remake version and you're right, you can swap between the two! WonderBoyIII is so incredible. It's a masterpiece and a game very worthy of making a purchase. Glad you agree! Thanks for watching.
Some fantastic choices there. Dragons Trap remains my system fave and was my first RPG...a genre I wouldn't play again for 7 odd years, but it probably was the reason I loved RPGs when I got to them! Great to see R Type in there as well. Fantastic port.
The Dragon's Trap is my favorite SMS game of all-time. Well... it changes between that and Zillion. Such a great game, and I love all the transformations, dungeons and bosses. It still holds up very well. Thanks for watching!!
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames always a pleasure. Just check one more thing…I only have one of the games you guys choose on my top 10…eheheh…it just shows the depth of the SMS library. Cheers!!
Growing up in the US, I always wished the SMS had a much bigger lifespan. I loved so many games for it, but the one I remember loving the most was Wonder Boy In Monster Land.
Me too! It is near impossible to find Master System games in the wild. I was also the only kid that had a SMS so no one could relate to my gaming tastes haha.
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames there was one game store just outside of Detroit where I grew up that actually rented Master System games. I was SO excited when I found it!
@@InfectiousGroovePodcast Hey cool, a fellow Michigander! Never went hunting for games around the Detroit area though. That's awesome they had a supply of SMS games!
Golvellius was my favourite game on the master system when i was 7. my brother and i spent months mapping the game and getting the special items that allow you to explore new biomes. i don't think we were able to complete the game, though, as it was wickedly difficult at the end!
Love to hear the memories of you and your brother playing it. I need to do a deep dive on it myself but just haven't had time yet. If you still have the Master System, you should fire it up again and beat it! Thanks for watching.
A solid line up of games which is limited by the truncated USA game library. Here in the UK we had many more games and some of the later ones really pushed what could be done on 8-bit video game systems. However, my all-time favourite game on the system is Wonderboy III and I just started replaying it on my RGB modded SMS
You said that right! We were limited unfortunately over here, and I'm very jealous of all the great SMS games you received in the UK. One that I really enjoy is Submarine Attack. WonderBoy III is an amazing game and I'm happy to hear you loved it. It's special to me too.
A fantastic video and amazing collaboration between passionate SMS fans. I really need to check out more of this console’s library to try out myself, and several games here certainly caught my attention. Amazing video by some of my favorite UA-cam content creators here!
I’m excited for you to check out the SMS. I know you mentioned your analog pocket and playing some of them on that. I do hope you check out Zillion but really, any of the games we discussed are right up your alley (besides Phantasy Star, ha) thanks for watching buddy!
Wonder Boy 3 on the Master System blew me away when I was a kid in the 80's. When I discovered that the TurboGrafx 16 had a port of this game, I needed that console and I bought it. It took me almost a year to gather the money for it but it was so worth it. The TG16 port is awesome! I've played that, Bonk's Adventure and Splatterhouse so much. Same than with the Master System though, I was the only person I knew who had a TG16, which sucked, I had no one to lend me games. I had to rent or buy.
Love to hear it! Wonder Boy III is so good and I didn't know there was a port to the TurboGrafx 16. Super cool you saved up your money and bought it. Bonk's Adventure and Splatterhouse I heard were awesome games too. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
I agree that Quartet is mostly over looked. As a kid I got Quartet with my Master System for Christmas. Played the heck out of Quartet and loved every minute. After lots of practice I could beat it each time I sat down to play.
Love to hear it! What an awesome Christmas gift that was. I was able to beat it for the first time a few years back, and really enjoyed my playthrough of it. Thanks for watching and sharing a memory!
I think Quartet has the best soundtrack of the whole 8-bit era. The jazzy solo in the stage 2 music -- that stuck with me for decades; it's meaningful to me. Stage 4's music brings the funk hard, and it blows my mind that the composer had the panache to create that drum solo out of nothing but white noise. When I recently picked up a Sega Master System, having lost mine from childhood close to 30 years ago, Quartet was the first game I bought.
the best soundtrack of the 8 bit era? nahh the best soundtrack of the 8 bit era is Providence on the NEC PC8801.. I've never heard anything as good as that one
Love to hear how much you enjoyed the soundtrack to Quartet. Also happy to hear you have reunited with a Master System. Happy playing and thanks for watching!
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames lol I just really like that game and the music in it is really good. I love tons of soundtracks from the 8 bit era though, hard to pick just one really!
Spy vs Spy on the Sega Card, the red case to Rampage, and Space Harrier 3D using the 3D glasses all come to my mind, along with the mega plus cartridge Monopoly, which I played many many times…. Wonder Boy II and III were the Crown Jewels, followed by Phantasy Star.
You had some great gaming moments then playing all those wonderful games! I'm jealous of your 3D experience. I haven't had that yet on the SMS. I love Rampage on the PS1, but haven't tried the SMS version. Thanks for watching and giving input!
Haven't played most games on your list. That Zillion music sounds awesome! My list would be (in no particular order) Sonic, Secret Command, Air Rescue, Batman Returns, Rastan, Castle of Illusion, Shinobi, The Circuit, Baku Baku Animal, Master of Darkness.
Zillion is incredible and one of my favorite games of all time. You have some excellent choices as well! Some of them I still need to experience so I’ll need to bump them up my backlog. Thanks for watching!
Excellent. Oh boy I loved the SMS version of Shinobi. That wall of rotating statues gave me a heck of a time too! Long live Phantasy Star! That was my first game and I played the HECK out of it. Finding some of the doors were SO HARD! I remember one dungeon where I swear I was getting an encounter ever step and turn and I had to search every section of wall for the door that wasn't showing up as I was walking down the corridor. It wasn't until then that I realized that I had probably had missed a bunch of doors in previous dungeons. What a noob!! I mean, I was only 12 but still. Bunch of other good games here. Great video!
Wow, what an introduction to gaming with Phantasy Star being your first game! That's one heck of a start! Loved hearing your memories of Phantasy Star and of the Sega Master System. I still need to play Shinobi but after Coury spoke so highly of it, I'll give it a shot soon. Thanks for watching!
The MS was a smash hit over here in the UK and had some of my favourite 8-Bit titles on the Console. Playing games like Afterburner, Prince of Persia, Submarine Attack, Wonder Boy III, Sonic, and Castle of Illusion are cherished memories. Thanks for making this video, nice list of games too.
I love that you brought up Submarine Attack! That’s one of my favorite PAL exclusives and I imported it just to play it. That cover is so beautiful too. Excellent choice.
This was my second console after Atari 2600… Purchased from Zayre department store in Chicago back in the day !!! My mom bought it for me and I think it was like 200.00! I had at least 30 plus games for it too! I was the only one in my neighborhood that had one!
Love to hear the memories! I can't believe you even remember the store name, how cool. That's awesome you had that many games for it. I was the only in my neighborhood who had one too and whenever anyone came over they had no idea what it was haha. Thanks for watching!
Great video and great selections by both of you guys. Really fun Collab. R type looks awesome and agreed how the green ninja looks way better than anything on the NES. Great video dude!
I know you’re disappointed My Hero wasn’t on this list Lol. R Type will kick your butt so if you want a challenge go for it. We need to get you a SMS at the next gaming convention!
Once Coury brought it up, I couldn't stop listening to the OST. It's very well done and such a fun game too! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
Mega man series on NES had some very good music as did other titles like conquest of the Crystal Palace. The nes can produce different sound waves the sms can’t.
Sega Master System makes me almost tear up a little. It brought me a lot of joy and memories back in the day, but I feel sad at the people I can no longer enjoy it's company with. Siblings grow up, relatives pass away. I'll never get that time back. (Nor will I get my old system back as my dad cruelly dumped it decades ago).
The power of nostalgia. I feel you buddy, lots of great times that will never happen again with friends and family. At least we have our memories! Thanks for watching.
This is a great list and most would be on my top Ten. Some I might add are Missile Defense 3D (although having all those pieces of hardware on a CRT is not going to happen often in 2023), Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Rastan , Golden Axe Warrior and Power Strike/Aleste.
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames it was a late hard to find game and I'm pretty sure most played it through emulation. I never came across it when I was actively collecting SMS. Same with Golden Axe Warrior, I was always looking for it and never found it.
I found golden axe warrior cart only at a garage sale about 4 weeks ago and they wanted a dollar for it. I couldn't get my wallet out of my pocket quick enough
Phantasy star....such a gem, played it so many times, I mean the OG characters Noah Alis etc, graphics where great, the fights where outstanding for its time.
It's incredible such a great game! I did a whole retrospective on it with a different video. I can't believe what they were able to do during that time. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
Nicely put together video dude. I’ve still not got a top 10 yet until I’ve played all 269 UK pal games which I’m doing weekly on my channel….. 67 games in so far 😊
I am envious of your journey with the Master System! You have a ton of great memories ahead and I can't wait to hear your top 10 list once you've completed all of them. Keep it up buddy!
I personally think nothing could ever top Golden Axe Warrior for me on the Master System. If only it had been more cheaper id own it for sure. It was the first time where I realized "wow so sega really can do what Nintendo cant" haha. I adore Zelda 1 too of course
Golden Axe Warrior is amazing, I thought about including it but due to how crazy expensive it is I didn’t. I wanted to have most games be reasonable with price, but man that’s a great game!
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames oh that's completely understandable. Y'all put together a great list! I've already been looking into some of the recommendations to buy. Never had a Master System growing up, only experienced the games through collections and such, so investing in this console is gonna be fun. Thanks for the video!
I'm in the UK, I never had a Master, I had a 64 and a Nes. I used to read Mean Machines so I was aware of games like WOnderboy3. When I got my Megadrive I intended to buy the converter (still 30 quid) and buy Wonderboy3...and if I had known about them at the time; Golvellius and the Golden Axe Zelda clone as I know I would have loved them! I also loved the Asterix games, but stuff moved too fast back then and I never did get he converter...bought a load of Megadrive games though. :D I think I had a thing about not buying games for an 8-bit system when I had a 16 bit (probably still brought some Nes games). But looking back now in 20/20, the best games sometimes appeared on different machines and sometimes that was the 8-bit.
Loved reading your little history with consoles. Even cooler you read Mean Machines. Many of my games from my childhood are from magazines that I read. They were a great source for new games. I really want to place the Asterix games. They seem great. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
We were lucky in Europe having strong Sms support and played cool games. Nes was popular too but mostly with the help of the famiclones,at least at Eastern and Southern Europe (UK,Germany and Scandinavians preffered the originals). Actually a famiclone could be easily found at every house along with other consoles/home computers back then.
I'm very jealous of all the great games you received. I've imported a few like Master of Darkness and Submarine Attack along with some others. Enjoy all the amazing PAL games! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
Greece? That's interesting. Nes did well in the places that it was officially released, the North and West, the release strategy of Nintendo was very patchy in the 80's, same with other Japanese houses though, the computer market was considerable.
The Master System is a blast to play, I know it gets overlooked a ton but there are some games worthy of your time. Thanks for watching buddy, hope all is well in your neck of the woods.
One game I love on the SMS is the port of Ultima IV. Except the change of the dungeons from 3d to 2d, it's a rather faithful port of the computer version.
Excellent choice! I still need that one in my collection. I've always wanted to try out the Ultima series but have not had the opportunity. Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for watching and giving a comment!
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames The NES port of 3 is pretty good, 4 takes a few liberties but is decent. 5 is an absolute travesty. The SNES port of 6 is good, but 7 is almost as bad as the NES port of 5, albeit in different ways, primarily censorship and trying to squeeze a huge game into only one MB of space. It’s a bummer we didn’t get any other Sega ports. 5 could have been good if done by the same crew that did SMS 4.
Amazing selection. I'd just add the first Asterix, Ninja Gaiden, Master of Darkness and some of the better Disney games to it, but other than that, you've covered my favs, especially Phantasy Star and Wonder Boy III (the best 80s console 'Metroidvania' IMO)
You have some great selections too! I really want to jump into the Disney games on the SMS and I do own Master of Darkness so I just need to pop it in and try it out. Thanks for watching and adding to the list, always great to meet more SMS fans.
Interesting list! I made a top 20 video series for the Master System and I also liked Zillion, Phantasy Star, Shinobi, WB3 Dragon's Trap and R-Type enough to add them to my list. Some of the non-US titles really dazzled, including the super impressive BUBBLE BOBBLE and MASTER OF DARKNESS.
Always great to meet another fan of the Master System! I have Master of Darkness and it's soooooo good! It doesn't get the love it deserves. Thanks for watching!
One thing I noticed when playing Phantasy Star a few years ago is that the sprites aren't mirrored, meaning the sprites hold weapons and other details were created specific for the left and right sides, have you noticed that? I consider it a big deal because I can hardly think of 2D games that actually took that into consideration. Take Sagat in all SF2 iterations, his eyepatch and scar change sides. Hey now his eyepatch is covering the other eye!
Spellcaster is an AWESOME game! Great suggestion. There are many great games we couldn't cover but I do love that. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Always great to meet another SMS fan.
Zillion I think is my all-time favorite on the SMS.... either that or WonderBoy III. Great to hear you enjoyed them too! It's always nice to meet more Master System fans. Thanks for watching!
I really enjoy the system, I love the black and red combination on it. There’s some amazing games for it but I wish there were more titles for sure. I’m stoked to hear you like the SMS, I didn’t know that. Thanks for watching!
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames I'm a big Sega fan. Liked the systems they put out. Always been a fan of how outside the box a lot of their classic games were
It was my first real console after the Commodore 64. Have collected an almost full PAL set since. I'll give some of your suggestions another try, as these weren't all my favourites. Some of my favourites are: Sonic The Hedgehog, Golden Axe Warrior, Dragon Crystal, Wonder Boy 3, Phantasy Star, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Road Rash, Desert Strike and many more. By the way, Choplifter is also pretty cool on the SC-3000.
Wow, congrats on an almost full PAL set! I'm jealous. Out of the ones you've listed, Dragon Crystal was one I've really wanted to try out. Desert Strike is another that I've heard amazing things about. Great to hear Choplifter is fun on the SC-3000. Thanks for watching!
In Australia we didn’t really see the SMS, but we did see SEGA Master System II with Alex Kidd in Miracle World built in. Good for Christmas where parents could buy the system and get an excellent game to play right out the box without a game cartridge so it was good to go!
Super cool that you own Zillion on VHS! What a treat that must be. There are some wonderful games on the SMS and it's fun to discuss them with others. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
Do it!!! Zillion is soooooo good. I can't believe how far ahead of its time it was. But man that ending is so tough! Good luck with it, and dont get lost in the maze.
I love that theme music! It's a great game to pick up and play. Anyone can understand the basics, but it takes some time and skill to master it. Thanks for watching!
I played A TON of Wonder Boy III on my Game gear using the Master Gear adapter back in the day. The small screen made it A PAIN to write down the passwords and I lost progress quite a few times, but the game was always a joy to play. And those with the FM sound expansion can enjoy a whole alternate soundtrack!
Nice! I've never played a Game Gear, but that's awesome you got to do it with WonderBoy III. What a great game to play. Oh man, I can imagine the passwords were tough to see haha. Great memories, thanks for watching!
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames If you decide to try a Game Gear, pick one with an upgraded screen. We only put up with the original one back in the day because there were no alternatives 😅
When I was a kid, I always thought that the title screen for Choplifter was just someone mowing down a bunch of prisoners with their hands up. Still doesn't make a lot of sense to me. But it was a fun game.
I know exactly what you are talking about LOL. I've been wanting to make a skit about it for awhile now. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Always great to meet more Master System fans.
Love the name of Bacon Ice Cream Productions! haha. There are some great games on the this list, and I'm super stoked to hear you love Zillion. It's probably my favorite game on the system. Thanks for watching!
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames Likewise with Tiger Chainsaw! For me, I think Golden Axe Warrior may actually be my favorite, but Zillion and Phantasy Star are in my top 5 for sure!! Thanks again!
This was really well put together! Great job guys. I love me some Master System!
Thanks a ton for checking this out! It was a blast to put together and share our passion for the Master System. I know you’re a pretty big fan of it yourself 🤙🏻
100% I never knew what an nes was for years. A snes was just 'nintendo'
@@Rainwarneryea I never understood the slang until I was older either. Figured I'd reply to you 👍
You can really see that it is a US channel.
Still a shitty list of mediocre games. R-Type and Quartet aren't even worth mentioning, considering the great games that exist.
Muricans just suck.
Guys you have no idea
It really was our system
😢sad but good times
I'm from the UK, still own my OG system from 87.. Master System Plus version I have.. reason it done so well was it had backing by Virgin Mastertronics in the UK.. Tonka in the US.. US market loved the Nintendo to much. Been a SEGA fan before the Master System...my first console I owned.
SEGA had a licence for the Choplifter game, the SEGA Master System version is based on the coin up arcade Sega game not the computer versions.
I owned a Sega master system and i was on it for hours, R type was my favourite game, thank you for this video, i miss the 90's so much.
You couldn't have picked the better games for the best games on the SMS. I have such fond memories of all the games mentioned here.
Love to hear it! I'm glad you've played the games we discussed, they are pretty special. Thanks for watching!
The Master System was my first console as well. So many hours spent playing Shinobi and Rambo II was one of the few games my dad ever played with me.
Awesome to meet another Master System fan! I bet those are some special memories playing Rambo II. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
Wonder Boy 3: The Dragons Trap is a classic. The animation, color, and boss fights are still cool to watch. It’s held up quite well.
Couldn't have said it better myself! A true masterpiece.
The remake is really good but I switch it to the original audio because it's just perfection.
Better than the Nes nonsense!
The Japanese cart of Enduro Racer is my go-to Master System (Mark III) game to just pick up and play...and it never really gets old.
Excellent choice! Pick up and play games are the best. That’s how I felt with Choplifter. It’s pretty simple but lots of fun.
Double shooting all of the gangsters to kill the ghosts.
Gangster Town was fantastic.
Time Soldiers is so much fun! I love the concept of it and that cover is terrific. Thanks for watching 🤙🏻
The SMS version of Rampage is awesome! Much better than the NES version in every way.
@@skycloud4802 have you tried Sonic 1 SMS remake fan game?
I'll agree with everything except the music. The music in Phantasy Star isn't really anything special.
Great game otherwise, tho.
In my top 10..
@@Jayce_AlexanderI have finds memories of that music 😂
R-Type on the Master System is so graphically impressive for an 8 bit system ! I love the game . Also Rampage on the Master System is an amazing port i think anyone who likes the arcade original ahould definitely check it out .
Great suggestion with Rampage! My first introduction to Rampage was on the PS1 and I really enjoyed it. I'll have to go back and check out the SMS version. Thanks for watching!
Interesting list, Great job again !
Thanks for watching! It's a blast to discover new games to play, and I'm excited to play some games that other's commented.
Great list of games here! I especially love the callouts to Quartet's amazing OST.
That song from Quarter is a BANGER! thanks for checking this out, it’s always a blast to talk about the SMS.
Really solid list for the Master System.
Some alternates would be Enduro Racer and Rocky. Both fun games once you get the hang of the controls but it does take some time.
Batman Returns is a lot of fun and the grapple mechanic is a blast.
Excellent choices buddy! I know you know your stuff on the SMS. I need to properly play Rocky. Enduro Racer is a fun one that I enjoy too.
Enduro racer is the only 8 bit racer I actually like. Simple but super fun which is what the master system was all about to me.
@@jeanbob1481 yeah, I don't care for too many racers but Enduro Racers was a really nice surprise.
Great video. Thanks. I would add Asterix trilogy for SMS!🙂
Thanks for watching! The Asterix trilogy is a great choice. I just saw a copy of one of them here in the U.S. and it was over $250! Pretty pricey for me.
Nice video guys. (Although I personally would have swapped out the Wonderboy games & replaced them with Spellcaster and Psycho Fox).
Those are two wonderful games! Thanks for watching and giving input. I need to replay both of those titles soon.

@@TigerChainsawVideoGames
You my friend are going to love Rastan.
We played that game so much that my label became damaged and I don't care as it gave it character. ;)
Once again, excellent video!
Man what a great list. I now have a few more games to hunt down.
WonderBoy III is so good! I think it's my all-time favorite SMS game too. Thanks for watching!
oh yeah!I was in love with my master system.wonder boy is still in my favorite games of all time, the whole series.and I deeply loved golvelius!
Wonder Boy is soooo good! I'm excited to play Govellius soon after Coury's recommendation of it. Thanks for watching!
As a kid it took me a while to realise the weird code symbols in Zillion were just normal numbers mirrored. Epic game.
LOL I didn't learn about the numbers until I was an adult.... But what an epic game it was! Man I love Zillion.

It kind of makes you wonder what they were thinking back then. Even the button layout on the system itself was like, “Sh*t, guys…shouldn’t we try to make it the SLIGHTEST bit nice?” 😅
Awesome stuff, Tiger!
Very well done video! I’ve never even played the sega master system before but this makes me want to
Thanks for watching Cherry! You need to get yourself a CRT TV and experience some classic gaming. I’m sure there’s a game on it for you too.

It's special to me too.
phantasy star was one of the initial RPGs I played... I appreciate this game so much, I had to get the Genesis for Phantasy Star 2 and 3
I still need to experience the sequels. It's something I've been meaning to do for awhile now. Thanks for watching!
Actually Choplifter was in the arcades too. I think the SMS was an arcade conversion rather than a remake of the 8 bit ports.
That's right! I was able to play it for the first time in the arcade not too long ago. It was very enjoyable.
I’ll have to check it out 🧐
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames lol I just really like that game and the music in it is really good. I love tons of soundtracks from the 8 bit era though, hard to pick just one really!
@@HiNRGboy Agreed, I miss simpler times haha
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames
Cheers, i loved that game too, probably my favourite shooter on the MS.
I freaking love the Master System. Nice to see more content about it. Just subbed you bro :)
Well thank you very much! The Master System is very special to me and it’s great to meet another fan of it.
100% agree about the soundtrack for Quartet. Cannot think of another 8-bit game that comes close in that regard.
Can't wait to play these during my challenge to finish all the sega master system games
Woohoo, you have some amazing gaming ahead of you! Always great to meet another Master System fan. Thanks for watching.
Love wonderboy in monsterland. I remember when i got my megadrive then got a master system converter and rented it. Great memories.
That's so cool! I love Wonder Boy, but I need to properly experience Wonder Boy in Monster Land. I adore Wonder Boy III.
Alex Kidd in Shinobi World is one I really want to play soon. I've had a few people tell me how great it is. Awesome suggestions!
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames it was a late hard to find game and I'm pretty sure most played it through emulation. I never came across it when I was actively collecting SMS. Same with Golden Axe Warrior, I was always looking for it and never found it.
@@caseyhayes4590 I found Golden Axe Warrior a few years ago... had to pay a pretty penny for it but I really wanted it in my collection!
Nice list, all but one were already on my Everdrive's "Best Of" folder so I can check them out later.
That's awesome to hear! You've got some amazing gaming ahead of you. Thanks for watching!
Cyborg Hunter, Kenseiden, Spellcaster, Psycho Fox, Time Soldiers, Asterix, Dynamite Dux, Speedball, Terminator, Robocop Vs. Terminator, Cool Spot.
Some excellent choices! I recently picked up Cyborg Hunter and I'm excited to try it out. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames going to take me years 😂
@@RetroRewind77 Godspeed! lol
Space Harrier and Double Dragon were the first two cartridge for my SMS. Good times!
Excellent games to start your journey with the SMS! Love to hear it. Thanks for watching!
I think I had a thing about not buying games for an 8-bit system when I had a 16 bit (probably still brought some Nes games).
I always felt like "the ninja" was a better game than Rambo. Also, you should check out Kensaiden.
The Ninja is a lot of fun too! Thanks for watching.
I would give The Ninja the edge over Rambo as well. Enjoyed both tho.
Great list of some games I need to check out! I never played Master system but this video convinced me. Fantastic video, as always!
The Master System is a blast to play, I know it gets overlooked a ton but there are some games worthy of your time. Thanks for watching buddy, hope all is well in your neck of the woods.
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames thank you, you as well! Congrats on this video blowing up. Very well deserved!
Whaat! No double dragon or zaxxon 3d. And how can you forget the absolute classic Snail Maze!?! Heathens!
Lol love the video.
I absolutely love Snail Maze haha. I thought it was the coolest feature back then to include a built-in game. Thanks for watching!
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames You're welcome!
Wow, that is a great point of detail that I never noticed. Really cool piece of info that you just dropped on us. Thanks for watching!
Love the SMS. Psycho Fox is another title that is definitely worth checking out. A very fun and challenging platformer.
Excellent suggestion! I have it but haven't had a chance to play it yet. I'd love to try it out soon. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
That’s a good master system tribute, spellcaster is probably my fav I think it would make a great remake
Spellcaster is an AWESOME game! Great suggestion. There are many great games we couldn't cover but I do love that. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Always great to meet another SMS fan.
Some top Choices, especially love Zillion, Rambo II (aka Secret Command in EU) and Quartet 👍
Zillion I think is my all-time favorite on the SMS.... either that or WonderBoy III. Great to hear you enjoyed them too! It's always nice to meet more Master System fans. Thanks for watching!
Phantasy Star is the most impressive 8-bit console game in many ways. Certainly in terms of visuals, art direction, concept and presentation.

@@TigerChainsawVideoGames The crazy thing is it wasn't even a late game in the 8 bit era. 2 years before Genesis launch. 1 year before SMB3.

Yeah Choplifter was the one for me. That theme music is ingrained in my brain🤣
