Today we're playing some Darkstalkers 3 aka Vampire Savior, and we'll be talking about one of my favorite characters in the game, Hsien Ko (aka Lei Lei). We'll run through her special moves, supers, and some combo and mixup ideas, then we hop into a match against one of the greatest NA tournament players for Hsien Ko, Kajoq.

Fun fact: in Skullgirls, Peacock's taunt has the same input as Tenrairah. And if you do it, her next lvl3 item drop is guaranteed to be a Tenrairha

it also makes it funnier when you realize she is based on Chinese Jiang Shi's, which they cannot walk, but instead hop forward, so she walking normally in the air is a way to circumvent that inability to walk or run normally lol.

No matter what the tiers say, she is best girl in our hearts! Hsien-Ko is an easy character to mess around with but can be hard to master especially with Tenrai Ha's in-put being so unique. I'm determined to get better with her. Ironic how her randomness can hurt her in UMvC3 and other games (where needing certain projectiles to connect is incredibly important) meanwhile her random layout in Puzzle Fighter is what makes her the best character in that game.
Mvc3 killed her with 2 incredibly simple tweaks: terribly slow down both the airdash and the pendulum, her main mobility/rushdown tools. Without those, she's just a subpar zoner. I remember being hearthbroken when i saw how slow she moved, being used to her vsav self...
@@serenaso4669 Her MvC3 speed is so bad. She also has very low power, unable to kill anyone even with X-Factor. It's so bad.
@@Chadius She was the first character I wanted to play in vanilla MvC3. ...That didn't last long. I can't fathom why they made her so bad.

Vampire Savior is one of my all time favorite fighting games, and even though I don’t main Hsien-Ko in Vsav, I’ll still always main her in puzzle fighter, gem fighter, and MvC3
Damn, it is pretty nice to see another person who loves Hsien-Ko. Her and Chun have been my favorites since I started playing fighting games
I love this character with a passion. I started playing DarkStalkers for the first time last year and she quickly became my main. She’s got such a great design and she’s insanely fun to play as.
Hsien-Ko has been my waifu since I was 10. I'm so happy to see renewed interest in Darkstalkers 😊
Was just watching a TAS of her, it looks like she has monstrous combo capabilities in VSAV.

Heck yeah I feel the same I always loved the games and the cartoon was cool af I hope there is a new game coming or some kinda resurgence for Dark Stalkers
@@footlonghawk3960 I hope we definitely get a Darkstalkers 4 or a Vs Capcom collection with the older Marvel games. So far we've only gotten the spiritual successor to Darkstalkers called Omen of Sorrow.

I love her character design, as it always intrigued me - are her arms rigid like a Chinese Vampire? Or only when she wears her sleeves? Where do the weapons come from? Darkstalkers has this unique gothic anime style I haven't seen anywhere else.
Pretty sure you can see that she has normal, flexible arms when she hits the gong. I always figured that her sleeves were either magic or rigid and elongated by some sort of hidden armature.

Hsien Ko is one of my favorite capcom characters. I just love her design so much, and the whole concept of her character.
Nice job coming back on the 2nd match; when you go from almost being perfected to winning a round it feels awesome.

I was confused reading that "Before MVC3" part in the title. My head immediately went to MVC2 and I was like I don't remember Hsien-Ko appearing in that game
The move where Q-Bee dies and respawns is so damn creepy. :)
I picked her for her paizuri blouse back in 2011 and have been hooked ever since.

So many great characters across that series. Good memories of not being allowed to play her because she was so oppressive. Which is ok because i got learn B.B. Hood which was also a blast.
1st round was so short! hey man i love this character too - would have been the coolest super hero movie - ghost girl who beats up scooby doo villains in traditional warner bros fashion using spectral kung fu weapons.
I played this game before and didn't even know it could be played in such an intense way Holy cow this was a really good show I always thought she was weak but now I'd love to give her a go

Fun fact, despite her incredible strengths, she's still only considered low-mid tier in that game! Partly bc of subpar defense, but also, the higher tier characters are crazy good.
I wish she'd been good in MvC3...Part of why I bought that game was bc I wanted to be able to use her in a modern game (along with Phoenix Wright, of course).
In Capcom Fighters Collection she is OD since her super is one button xD

For those who don't know, Hsien Ko is a cute version of a Taoist alchemy zombie. They can't walk, they only hop. The symbol on the forehead is a sigil that gives them life. If the sigil is removed the zombie collapses. There's an awful movie that's lots of fun, with a White guy in a foil Robocop suit who shoots the hell out of these Chinese zombies. It's a blast. Can't remember the name. Sorry.
Yep, her design is a homage to the jiangshi. Used to watch plenty of old Cantonese horror/supernatural movies where the would feature.
@@PsychInOz The way a Chinese friend of mine described jiangshi, it sounded like the Haitian zombies. Pretty cool. Probably real. Probably not bunny-hopping, but that would be cool. It's crazy they figured out how to make those chemicals. Chinese and HK movies were so cool before PRC took over HK, huh? Then after 1997 all the movies were falling flat. Pretty much a dead scene after 1999.

Oh the big claws are a good anti air . . . Gets hit by every upward projectile cause they are like 2 frame unreactable try neutral jumping to fireball or ground dash just to mix him up if every time you hit the air it's into dash he can predict you with anti air

She needed more of her good traits to transfer to MvC3.
Really looks like my kind of high technical fighter.
I always loved her she's a spamming beast.
I met Hsien-Ko in the Street Fighter Alpha Antology, I found the Super Gem Fighter and when I saw her, first: I thought she was a boy, and two: Her desing didn't like me for some reason, maybe because her skin was blue and her stance was weird...
But then I played with her and I started to user her every single time I wanted to play that game. When I met Darkstalkers saga and discovered that she was from that game I wanted to play it no matter what...
Then when I got a Capcom Colletion for my Ps2 and saw that there was the Darkstalkers Colletion, I couldn't resist and I played the game thousand and thousand of times with her.
So I can say she is my main.
Maybe her skin being blue is an effect of turning into a Jiang-shi. Also, Jiang-shi stick their arms forward to keep their balance.

Heyo how would you say the netcode in the collection is compared to Fightcade? Is it better or worse? I haven't found much info on this other than that the netcode is better than SF's 30th Anniversary Collection.
To me it feels just as good as fightcade. 30th anniversary felt worse to me
For me, I have wifi issue with fightcade and switch (even on Ethernet) but the PS4 ethernet version is smooth as butter

Fun fact:
when i played mvc3 Hsienko was my Point character, most of my opponents usually think "he is gonna do armor SP and change her" so they play with caution waiting for her withdraw...but when they realized she REALLY WAS my Point character...It was too late :)
She looks like the undead controlled fighters of Shaman King, the chinese guys had some of them with a Sticker on their face

She's a jiangshi. Which is actually why her ground movement is really slow, because she mostly hops instead of walking, a signature characteristic of jiangshi.

So far I think as low tiers go in this game I think it was between Anakaris and Lilith.
She was like the ten-ten of darkstalkers playwise.

Lei Lei is lower tier in the game before, Vampire Hunter, but she's still a threat in that game
How did you pick that color for her? Looks awesome!
video is hella old but you get that color by pressing all the kicks at the same time (and white one with all punches) you can set a macro to choose it easier

It would be awesome to have an action RPG / fighter game (mid boss fights are 1v1) with all these awesome darkstalker characters .. Tekken did that (kinda) way back in the beginning..
Could be such an aesthetically pleasing adventure .. with such diverse stages..

it's the speed the game runs at, traditionally tournaments are played on turbo

Her defense may be kinda ass competitively it won't matter when you're smothering them with mix that does a billion damage
VSav is a treasure trove of offensive options. Even with all of her offense Hsien-ko is considered merely mid-tier. Then again the top tiers are super busted anyway.

this is very carefully worded... she's not low tier, but she's not high tier, either. given by far she's one of the most interesting characters ever designed for a fighting game, you would think capcom would have made her broken at least once.

Somebody should make a mod for mvc3 that makes hsien ko more viable.
Her mechanics work in Vampire Savior. What they gave her is way too slow for Marvel even for a casual play. If she had a viable wave or plink dash she’d be playable.

i was so disappointed when mvc3 came out cause she was one of my main alongside victor on darkstalkers and she was way too slow in mvc3
She was the first character I tried in MvC3 and I can't even articulate how disappointed I was by her. I loved her design and mechanics but God she SUCKED in that game. I feel like a common issue with the MvC franchise is you have this massive roster of cool/interesting characters and then like 70%+ of them are just trash and you see people playing the same 10 or so characters, which applies I guess to all fighting games but most fighting games don't have roster sizes like MvC.
Darkstalkers always looked cool and would've probably been a series I would've loved playing in arcades but I genuinely never saw an arcade of it anywhere in my life.
