      Hey did yours overheat? Mine did after a few minutes, and after I thought about it, microwaves are usually only on for a few minutes to heat your food, so they might not be designed to run for long periods of time like if you were to use it to charge batteries for example. Do you think if I were to add extra windings to the primary it would help stop it from overheating?

      I found that putting a resistor on the positive output limits the current draw and after that the transformer was warm but not hot.

    Nice project, well done video 👍
    Did you find the transformer issue ?
    I believe it's from the eddy currents caused by the loose plates.
    Compare this transformer now, with how it was BEFORE tear down.
    The plates are compressed,welded, and resin sealed under vacuum .
    But for now you could bolt it together using high grade non-magnetic bolts.

    • @TheChrisey
      @TheChrisey 4 роки тому

      You are always limited to the capacity of the primary winding. A microwave is generally designed to run slightly below 1kW. 100Amps * 12v is 1.2kW. I highly doubt that this old microwave transformer was designed to handle that, thus it would blow up eventually. To increase the amps, decrease the number of winds on the secondary. It'll give you lower voltage but higher current. Also the wire used in the secondary in the video will never take 100Amps lol. This video is ridiculous

    By far the best build for a welder that I have found. Great job, one question. Since I am here in the states what would I get if I connect to 110v instead of 220v or do I have to connect to 220. I have a switch the I salvaged from a computer power supply that you switch from 220v to 110v, will that help? Thanks in advance and again great viceo!!!!!

    • @growleym504
      @growleym504 Рік тому

      You will get roughly half the voltage output. The voltage in the video is too high for a 12VDC system, so first of all reduce the 22 turns to more like 17 or 18 turns. Now double that, to give the same secondary voltage at half the primary voltage. This would also increase the primary circuit current by a factor of two, for a given load. It is simple ohm's law arithmetic here. When you get to high school you can learn stuff like this in physics class. If you are already out of school and you missed that, get a good book on electricity, magnetism, and safe wiring and electrical practices before you plug anything in to anything.

    Mr. Electron the 750Watt Microwave oven has microwave oven transformer (MOT) core that is calculated for the 375Watt RMS out put power. So 375Watt : 10.5Volt = 37Amp Max Output current. That why it has a current shunts build in between primary and secondary coil.

    Just remember that microwave oven transformers are made on the brink of saturation, they are not meant for continues operation out over 15 minutes. They will destroy themselves from heat over a longer period of time. If you want to avoid this, add some more primary turns to lessen the Volt/turn product a bit.

      Nice project. I measured a MOT saturation curve, they are deep into saturation (maybe 100 VA) at nominal input. Another solution is to use two identical MOTs with primary windings in series, so that each one operates at half voltage. You can then wind the secondaries and connect to suit. This configuration would run much cooler even if the primaries are aluminium. I would suggest using much thicker copper wire if your target is 100A continuous capability. I have a YT video to show over 1000A from a single MOT transformer with a 2 turn secondary when I paid attention to keeping resistances low. I use it for wood branding art.

      Cool information. Just want to ask, is it possible to run continuosly if you put some heat sinks and also fan?Thank you.

      @@sikismeker The transformer is already forced air cooled in a microwave oven, it can only postpone the inner turns getting cooked, by a small margin.

    Is it possible to make 10A or more output by rewinding a small 9V radio transformer? I have made 2 turns in the secondary of this small transformer but I am getting no current.

    It is much better to use a single bridge rectifier module rated for the full design current. You need to solder those twisted wire connections, too. That is very dangerous.
    A normal 12v lead acid deep cycle battery, after it has rested for 24 hours with no charging current or load applied, should be around 12.65 volts. The normal float or maintenance voltage for keeping the battery charged when under light or no load is about 13.4 to 13.6 volts. A good bulk charging voltage is about 14.4 volts up to the 80% state of charge.
    You read 17.96 volts with the 22 turn secondary. so, that is about .816 volts per turn. Simple arithmetic will give you the number of turns you should try now, for the correct voltages for a 12v system that includes a battery. The closest number of turns to what should give a good float voltage for keeping your battery charged would be 17 turns. But you would want 18 turns for bulk charging and maybe also you might want to use 16 turns for long term float charging. So, if you tap your secondary coil at 16, 17, and 18 turns, and make connections with a switch rated for the max current or else use jumpers and terminal strip, you could manually switch voltages depending on what you are trying to do. If you will not be worried with charging a battery, you still want to lower your voltage a bit to extend the life of your DC components.
    Your microwave transformer is perfectly designed for use in a microwave oven. Microwaves are typically used for less than 10 minutes with typically a kilowatt of power used. You do the math on max allowable current. But remember, this is for a very light duty cycle! That transformer is not meant to be dissapating even the magnetizing current indefinitely. So, your transformer is INADEQUATE for your application. Please, think about what you are doing. Microwave transformer cores are fine for building things like spot welders where they are only energized for a few seconds up to, with low loads, a few minutes. Not for a DC system general power source!
    Finally, where are your circuit breakers and panel meters? You need as a minimum, a shunt ammeter and voltmeter on the secondary and honestly I would want one on the primary, too. These are very cheap on amazon, ebay, or aliexpress. And you need to decide what current your secondary circuit can carry according to the wire gauge, and rate your secondary circuit breaker below that.
    Videos like yours are fun to watch but dangerous for idiots to watch who think they can do the same thing you are doing, and then burn their house down or electrocute themselves or destroy expensive equipment. If you can't do this safely, please, don't show other 12 year old curious georges how to cause a catastrophe.
