Very true. If you wanted to drive with dc voltage, you could use DC voltage. You would not have disrupted the optimized structure of the engine. @@chandruasp you can do it without but the capacitor spots out DC ripples after being converted from a sinusoidal wave. As long as it is designed to cope with the voltage being fed through it, for this reason AC capacitors are usually the best choice.

the rpm meter I use takes 2 strips of tape to get the right rpm or 1 strip of tape needs to be divided by 2 for correct rpm
rpm will get doubled with 2 strips which is incorrect

Ironically, you find them inside of permanent magnet dc motors. So maybe you can find an old burned out motor and salvage the magnets inside.
