  • Are you moving to Portugal but scared of feeling alone? If you are, you're not the only one. When I first arrived in Lisbon as a student back in 2008, I struggled with loneliness too. Making local friends seemed so daunting, and my imperfect Portuguese made me hesitant to speak up - but hiding away wasn't the solution. To truly embrace life in Portugal, I had to step out of my comfort zone. In this video, I share my personal journey of overcoming the fear and loneliness that comes with moving to a new country & provide you with practical tips on how you can do the same. - Filmed in Lisbon, Portugal by Liz Sharma, a Portuguese teacher in Lisbon and founder of Talk the Streets.

    What a great video. 😊
We enjoyed our month there this summer, from the Algarve to Lisbon/ Sintra to Porto/Braga and finally Nazaré.
And we only scratched the surface.
We heard lots of conversations we did not understand, but I regularly tried the few words I did learn from you. Even today, almost 2"months back in the US, I Whatsapp messages almost daily with a woman we met at church in Albufeira. In short, Amy and I cannot wait to go back and pray often to see how to make that happen with God's divine blessings & direction.
    Thanx muchly for your help.

My first trip to portugal is in a few weeks to see if this is where I want to move in a few years. I've been hitting a lot of your vids to learn and practice some of the basics. If this trip goes well, I'll def be wanting to hit the lessons a lot harder.
And this topic is one of my worries on moving, but from what I know of me, and what you say hear, it sounds like it should be ok.
Thanks for posting all of these great resources.

It helps also to understand that many Portuguese speak a rather bad portuguese. Took me a while to figure that out😎 Secondly, you will always be seen as a foreigner - which gives you a lot of freedom. People simply do not expect foreigners to behave like locals.

This gives me hope because I know far too many foreigners who are happy to stay in their expat bubble speaking only english, without connecting meaningfully with their local communities.
But we portuguese are also to blame: we go rushing to speak to them in english as soon as they open their mouths, so I can see why it'd be easy to feel you don't have to make much of an effort.
Still, I have seen a few people pretty much DEMANDING we speak their language for their comfort (fortunately these cases were few and far between).

Moving to Portugal in 2 weeks! I’ve taken your program and also have been taking lessons 3 times a week with a tutor for the past year and feel pretty good on everything but speaking. My teacher said once I’m there, I’ll be actually speaking in no time. Plus living in a small village (Nazaré) will help with that.

First, welcome :D. Nazaré isn't really a small village but I guess that depends on what you are comparing it with. It will certainly be a calm (and scenic) place.

@@brunomadeira8432Obrigadissimo! Where I lived in the US was considered a small town and it had 80k people. A village with ~15k people is very small to me but I’ll have to adjust my thinking on that subject. Really looking forward to Nazaré, I think it’ll be perfect for us.
