My entire life has mostly consisted of 3 kickers for the Lions: Eddie, Jason Hanson, and Matt Prater. Admit it Lions fans… at that position, we have been really spoiled!
Errol Mann before Eddie and Gary Ypremian before Mann so they were locked down for about 50 years at that position. They got rid of Garo because Karras hated him but still holds the record for field goals in a game for the Lions.
I remember seeing Eddie the first time in 1980 when the Lions used to hold their July training camps at Oakland University. Lions players used to walk down from the big hill from the locker area to the 2 practice fields. We were early and there was Eddie, he was the only one out there early was walking around the practice field shagging footballs with a team assistant, I asked my Dad who is that and he said it must be a kicker with those black adidas shoes on. I still have Eddies autograph.
I'm 36 so I never knew they held training camp at OU I live just up the road... Thanks for the historic insight and cool story Scott. May you stay blessed sir!
Eddie was so upset when he missed that 42 yard S.F. field goal that he decided to end his life. He purchased a gun and put it up to his head, but missed by three inches.
Murray was a Lions legend, and as reliable a kicker as you could ever want. Unfortunately, he missed a very makeable FG in San Fran in '83 that would've knocked Joe Montana & the 49ers out of the playoffs. Hoping the Lions can finish the job this year!
Eddie carried this team for some time.
Glad he won a Superbowl.
Eddie Murray was our only hope for a bit there.
Great story.
Nice people.
Eddie Money. Reliable kicker.

I’m thinking Errol Mann in the 70s
Yep Lions usually had a top shelf kicker. But where did it get them? 😂
