How did your jackfruit trees fare this year? I have one in Dunnellon (seedling) in a bit of an exposed area. I have not been home this month to inspect it but Im sure it didn't make it. I guess the challenge for you would be Durian at Sand Hill. I'm told Durian only likes extreme hot tropical climates.
I live in Western Michigan and seen one of these for the first time this week at the grocery store. My daughter and I had to see what it was because it is so different looking and huge . Your videos are so interesting keep up em coming!
I just bought/ate our first jack fruit and it was amazing! I saved some seeds, I bought it from my local Publix here outside Orlando, says the fruit was from Mexico. Should I find a jackfruit that was grown here in FL, or will this one do just fine. It doesn’t tell me the variety, but the fruit was delicious. Thanks for the videos, getting into gardening here in FL and your videos have such great info, keep it up!
Here in central NY, you can find jackfruit at Asian grocery stores, but not the big chain stores in my area. The Syracuse Regional Farmers Market is a great place to buy AND try a piece of the fruit. Plus they'll sell you portions weighing less than a 2 year old ;)
The house I grew up in in my country, Cambodia, we had two big jackfruit trees. My favorite one was very mushy when ripen. It's a bit messy to eat that one. The other one had crunchy meat and sweet too, but I didn't care much for that. We use the young one for stew, soup etc. I miss it. I am trying to grow them here in East Texas zone 8b. I don't know if it will work. I put 6 of them in ground now and have several seedlings in the pots just in case those in the ground won't survive the frost.
Thanks for the helpful videos! Do you recommend planting jackfruit with biochar and rich organic soil? My local Walmart (north of Orlando) is selling Black Gold Jackfruit trees, I didn't know they would grow well here in Central FL.
Thanks! Yes, I would add some biochar, compost and organic fertilizer. That’s definitely pushing the edge. I can’t believe Walmart is selling jackfruit! I’d say it’s worth planting some seed, they can fruit in 3-4 years. It’s risky planting a grafted tree that far north.
@@PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL Thanks so much! Think I'll give it a try, with the 1 yr Walmart plant warranty. I was shocked to see jackfruit (and beautiful sugar apple trees) in the garden center. I'd bought monstera deliciosa there a couple weeks ago.
Wow your jackfruit tree is only 2 and half yrs old from seed, thats amazing growth. I'm doing an experiment here in the UK to see how big i can grow one indoors in a pot.🤞
Great stuff, Pete! We have a jackfruit tree on our farm in the Philippines and they are so treasured that my wife's parents put little canvas bags on each one to protect them. I do not know the variety but the tree is native and at least 20 years old. Huge. The jackfruit gets about 10 to 20 pounds before harvesting. Can't wait to eat some the next time we visit, and plant some more! What do you think is the best variety, Pete, taste wise or ideal size wise? Love the videos!
Michael Lohre - That makes me want to fly over & check it out for myself! Sounds super impressive! Thanks for sharing! We don't know of any particular varieties, since all the Jackfruit we are growing are all from seeds that we personally harvested from locally sold fruit. We have been purchasing from our local Asian markets & because of the language barrier, we really have no idea if what we're getting has a 'name.' When we take it home and crack it open, if we like the flavor and texture - we plant the seeds. If we think it's low quality (mushy or has a lot of latex) - it gets thrown into the chicken pen/we won't save the seeds. We feel that the crunchier, the better! We've been giving them our own names, according to the flavor. Our two favorite right now are the 'Apple Jack' & the 'Pineapple Jack' (The latter truly has a pineapple aftertaste.)
I have ordered 3 Jackfruit seeds from Sri Lanka because I can't find any shop that sells Jackfruit in my area of New South Wales in Australia as I live 150 kilometres north of Sydney. People do grow them up near the Queensland border where my dad came from but that's over 600 kilometres away, they definitely grow in Queensland & I've heard that they grow at San Diego which is on a similar latitude to where I live. I'd just have to protect them from possible frosts although we haven't had any last year as our winters seem to be getting warmer.
Russell Booth that's great to hear. I'm planning to make a farm update video after the hard freeze we just had. It's been an extremely cold winter and Arlo has been 25°. I'm blown away by how cold hardy some of these jackfruit are, can't wait to show y'all.
Well Mr Pete , I've got 3 started they about 3foot tall in a container I'm thinking of putting them in the ground pretty soon , I was told they wouldn't produce fruit until they got to about 5 years ? Will see 👀
Pete Kanaris GreenDreamsFL , would it be a good idea to throw some slow release fertilizers like osmocote or dynamite when I transplant them or should I wait till they get established ,
Pete Kanaris GreenDreamsFL thanks Pete I've got some black cow compost , since it's been raining on and off the last couple of days I think it's time to give em a permanent home in the yard ,👍🏼🤗
I just bought a little seedling, it's good to know I won't be waiting for ever to see fruit! *Also, trees don't give birth! They do bear fruit however, "tree-borne" is the term you're looking for. :)
Wow- something new to me. I use to love Juicy Fruit gum- so I bet I would love Jackfruit. It actually does not look real in your hands- I cannot imagine that growing from a tree base as I have Never seen anything grow that way. Truly amazing -thank you so very much.
Pete Kanaris GreenDreamsFL just about your vlogs, I read your description a d realized later that they were in fact these videos you are making. My bad, keep em coming man! Short sweet and to the point are the best!
Becca Becca - I appreciate that comment! I would hate to be boring! It's pretty hard to keep me interested in something, so I guess I've picked up a few cues from my mentors along the way.
I've never seen Jackfruit in the store up here and I've lived in this area for 20 yrs. =( Such a bummer. I'd love to try jackfruit though, I truly enjoy trying different fruits. My children were raised to test out various fruits randomly. When we went grocery shopping we'd purchase strange fruits we'd never seen just to taste them. It was great times taking them into the store buying fruits & veggies this way. 1 fruit for 1 veggie, mostly veggies in this area since we don't get the really awesome fruits of the southern regions. 🌱Be Blessed 🌼
Not lately, my children are all grown up now. So we haven't had the pleasure of taking a trip like that. Maybe I ought to see what sort of market the local town has. I'll have to go check, man do I surely miss living on Oahu. =/ Fruits there were so much better than here in the midwest! 🌱Be Blessed 🌼
@@PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL When Large will they survive a frost? can you say anything more about there soil requirements I just ordered one of those sweet puppy's
I really did enjoy this video. Normally I dont watch videos til the end but with yours i did. I actually do Vlogs like this on my channel. Keep up the great Work! if you'd like, feel free to check out my channel, I'd greatly appreciate it
Pete, thanks again for these short wonderful videos. They always get me so excited about planting trees.
Pete! I'm loving your videos....Jackfruit! ...another new to me plant! I'll look for it in my grocery. thanks😁
Candy Kuettel glad you're enjoying them!
Impressive. How's their cold/frost tolerance in your experience and can they possibly be grown in smaller gardens? Thanks

Great video Pete. I'm trying to grow a few trees now. I put one in the ground last week but others still in pots.
ALBRITTON FARMS awesome! This one is a favorite here for us. Just be sure not to leave them in a pot too long, they have a serious tap root.
Pete Kanaris GreenDreamsFL how long is too long in a pot? Thanks Pete!
It would have been nice to discuss the cultivars available in Florida.
Hi Pet do you think I can grow this jackfruit and it products fruits in Lakeland FL?
Anything is possible. We are in a very similar climate here at my place

Pirates Cove Piratas Ensenada glad you found it local. I should mentioned checking checking markets for them, thanks for the reminder.
between Golden Pillow, Black Gold, Mai 1, and Mai 2 which one taste the best?
What???? you can grow them in Central FL?
I see them all over Homestead but didn't know you could grow them up here in Polk.

Maybe in a greenhouse, but that is certainly a stretch being in zone 8
Cant wait to see that. Been hearin lots of good about these recently.

I'm a little North of you guys. Can I grow jackfruit without a greenhouse to protect from frost/ freezes?
yes!
I wonder why it got the name Jack? Really looking forward to the video where you show us the insides.

Nice! I’ve found they do much better in the ground. Here in Florida they can easily fruit in 3 years from seed.
Pete Kanaris GreenDreamsFL , would it be a good idea to throw some slow release fertilizers like osmocote or dynamite when I transplant them or should I wait till they get established ,
Dave Scheer I wouldn’t use chemical fertilizer. I’d suggest some type of organic manure, rabbit or chicken poop works great.

Would not want one of them to fall on my head LOL

If you Come to my home in Kerala (south India) i will give tons of jackfruit for free
