At the very least it's got 8500 in parts on it. Tank, exhaust, wheels... those parts add up quick, especially when they're BMW parts. Sounds like you're saying they replaced the engine so the leak that made it a lemon law bike has been fixed. In that case you scored big time. Now you and Craig have matching Beemers.

If the bike was a buy-back from Hermy’s BMW that’s a bike registered in PA. PA does not have a lemon law that extends to motorcycles. It had to be done under the Federal Lemon Law. I found this out with my Harley Pan America I got from Keystone HD. It had serious electrical issues. Here’s the kicker with the fed law. You have to prove the issue devalues the bike or causes a safety risk even if you meet the other requirements. In my case the bike would turn off when leaving a standstill like an intersection red light. You’d have to turn the ignition off and wait for the bike to power off and back on. They tried to fix it twice with no luck. They knew they were screwed. I refused to take the bike back. They bought the bike back before it hit federal lemon law status.
So you kept stalling it pulling away from a red light?

@@TheAsheybabe89 sure, if you call stalling it the display going black, turning back on but booting without available ride modes. Then after turning the bike off and back on it wouldn’t leave limp mode. Dealer replicated the issue but couldn’t figure it out. The MoCo couldn’t figure it out. The bike threw 16 different codes, 3 of which were not in the factory service manual or in the MoCo database.
My statement wasn’t about how crap the Pan Am is (and it is crap) it’s about how tricky lemon law can be. Many states don’t cover motorcycles and the laws are setup to favor the dealer.

@Srkcycles I just saw your Honda trail video. Noticed your comment about mopeds only .9 hp. Have you had a chance to look at the Genuine Roughhouse 50 scooters? Pull of the restrictor off the cvt and they will go about 44-52 mph depending on your weight. I think you might enjoy it. They are 2 stroke engines made in present day.

I know in Illinois buy backs have to be disclosed by a dealer and the resale value drops like a brick. I lost $4k on my last car because of that.
Some are fine and dandy vehicles after the repairs are done. With a new motor that one will probably be good.

About 10 years ego I end up buying 1 year old Camaro with lemon title. Official reason for lemon was “knocking noise from the back when coasting in gear”
… unofficially that thing had lots of electrical gremlins. Had it for almost 2 years and first 4 months it was in shop 6 times till they actually replaced whole computer (warranty covered it, without it it would a be $5k repair).
After that it was decent car but it was real pain to sell. Finally traded it at Hyundai dealership for later year model on January 2nd (they were pushed to make sale before end of financial year)… dealership still had that Camaro on their lot most of the summer… with a price tag eventually going 2k lower than what they gave me in trade.
Dealer only has to fix lemon reason if it’s safety related. And if they do nuisance buyback they won’t accept 2nd reason for lemon (that’s why mine was in shop 6 times)

That is a beast of a bike. It is built to eat up highway miles. I test rode one during a BMW event. Drove it all around town, back roads, street roads, but it wasn't until it was on the highway that if felt happy. That bike wanted to run. It's not made for twisties, it's made to devour highway.
$8500 for a R18 with warranty! I'll buy that. 😍🤩
Exact same thing happened to my 2014 Softail Deluxe CVO I picked up late last year. Something wrong with the engine, Harley swapped it with a new one, and the original owner sold it back to buy a new bike, The CVO sat in the dealer back room for years, because it was deemed a Lemon Law return. So, I happened to see it, asked about the price, and picked it up for less than 1/3 of it's sticker price. The bike had 11,000 miles on it. The new engine had 20. She runs like smooth warm butter, with zero problems for the last 6 months. It's at the shop right now, for it's first oil change since 2015!

@@rivaroci It was serviced prior to my buying it. New oil, filter, air filter, alignment, belt check etc. Engine being new, I only put 700 easy miles on before the oil change.

Consensus is the British/Europen market loves it, the American market is very mixed. I personally love it. It’s a new class, a British styled cruiser. Look at the R5 history.

Where can consumers buy lemon law bikes? I drive a lemon law car, my last 2 have both been lemons and loved them both with little issues. My current vehicle was a 2020 lemon because the headlight was broken and it took more than 30 days to replace.

I'm just curious because back when I fist started working at a shop as a young mechanic and got my first BMW, an '82 R65 with 125k miles but we had an engine from a totaled R65LS with like 3k on it. Rather than just do an engine swap in a couple hours I tore them both down and swapped it all to keep my numbers matching block.

Interested to hear your review on this bike. I think they're beautiful but from what I've heard of other BMW riders they're horrible bikes. Really uncomfortable and with the motor the way it is there's no way to stretch out and put highway pegs on them. Can you confirm any of that?

Speaking as a BMW owner for 20 years out of 40 years riding, it's not a horrible bike. Far from it. BMW riders are terrible snobs and don't take kindly to their beloved brand doing anything different. Basically for them, if they can't fit a top box it's not a proper Beemer. As an R Nine T rider myself, I experience the hate first hand. FWIW I'd say the R18 is a stunning thing to ride. It's got that feel good factor so lacking these days, and comfort is good. Performance is more than acceptable for this kind of bike. My only gripe is its lack of ground clearance. People always say "it's a cruiser so what do you expect" to which I reply, try the BMW back to back against my 2003 Moto Guzzi California and you'll eat those words. It's a shame because it was the only thing that stopped me buying one.
saw a horror story of a r56 minicooper that got the high pressure fuel pump replaced 6 times before the buyback. it was in a radio add for a lemon law lawyer so idk of its authenticity but dam.
Like anything at an auction that isn't a simple buy, you either just get lucky or you don't. On a brand new bike it's probably hard to go wrong with if only because you could part that thing out for that much money lol

not all states have lemon laws, and most states lemon laws vary greatly state to state. but i think these are beautiful bikes, and since they are bmw, its got far more than 8500 bucks worth of individual parts on it

Looks like you won the "just (not) in time inventory" business model lotto; BMW prob keeps virtually no repair inventory on hand in the USA; even if BMW has spare engines on hand in Bavaria or Berlin the cost to air freight one over prob doesn't make sense to the accountants. BMW just writes-off any loss.
Imagine, when Eric Buell started Buell cycles H-D had something like 50 XR1000 engines just sitting in a warehouse for several years (XR1000 last MY was 1984; Buell produced 1st RR1000 BT as a MY1986).

Would this Bike be good for me at 6'6"?
I'm 6'4" and test road one. I think you'll be fine. My chief complaints were that my boot from sole to top of the toe is the same thickness as the distance between the gear shifter and cylinder head on the left and the cylinder head and brake on the right. Also, the kick stand is in a weird place but I can't remember now how. I think I kept hitting it when I was trying to shift.
It's a beast of a bike. Loves the highway. Not my style so I wouldn't buy one myself. But it was smooth and pretty comfortable.

I was scared off auction vehicles in my 20’s. My sister married a shady used car salesman and he had me drive one of his cars to auction. A BMW 325i. Super fast little manual car. Problem was the trans slipped in every gear. I mentioned it to him and he said that’s why it’s going to auction. They could get more money if no one test drove it. Wow. No thanks. Guy was the poster child for shady car salesman.
If only they did that in Florida my Pan America was in the shop for most of its life until I finally traded it at a $10k loss

It looks like a lot of people don’t understand what you just explained in the video Sean. The bikes found at an auction like you attend would have lemon law manufacturer buy back bikes for sale. The manufacturer would have already repaired the motorcycle through a local reputable dealer. You aren’t buying a lemon, you are buying a motorcycle that took longer than regulation allows or too many attempts to remedy the same problem due to many variables that usually are out of the dealers control, especially on new under warranty bikes. From the comments I read it looked as though people thought a junk, damaged or broken bike was purchased. That isn’t the case at all. Great finds! Leaves plenty of room for profit on retail, but I’d be a little Leary of going too high being the MSRP dropped this year after extremely poor sales in the first year of production. Beautiful bikes but I’d prefer the touring chassis just released last summer.

@@Srkcycles that’s actually a good thing especially when the information is available. I know another large BMW dealer that sells a lot of manufacturer buy backs and fully discloses everything that created the buy back and what was done to repair it. They do very well with them, I wouldn’t be afraid to buy one at all. Just with the “supply chain issues” and “port congestion” could create buy back bikes, let alone when new models are released and engineers are involved with solving warranty claim issues on problems never seen before.

Haven't rode a bike in over 30 years. Never go out unless I'm running errands and that means I'm filling my trunk, back seats and passenger seat. So no reason to have a bike anymore

I bought a brand new sportster 48 in PA back in 2015 from hannums HD.. had the bike less than 48hrs and noticed it was seeping oil from the clutch cover.. I tightened the bolts and wiped it down.. next day same thing.. bike had literally 72 miles onit since I bought it.. I took it back to the dealer.. they had it for a week and called me and said listen we thought it was the gasket.. we replaced that and it’s still leaking.. we eventually discovered that an oil passage was “nicked” at the factory and we need to replace your engine.. I said no you’re not.. I’ve had the bike less than 3 days.. it has 72 miles onit.. I don’t want a new motor that your 18 year old tech puts in.. this bike could have problems for the rest of my ownership.. I want a new bike.. they started to argue about it.. I mentioned my lawyer and they called me back a day later and told me they would give me another bike AND give me a loaner to use until it came in.. I couldn’t argue with that.
Thank God 18 year olds don’t work in the assembly plants, huh?

The dealer doesn't buy it, the manufacturer does. I've unfortunately had to do 2 of these lemon buybacks, one motorcycle, one car, dealer had nothing to do with the process at all. Maybe some states handle it different, IDK, I'm in CA.
He said the dealer buys it back and the manufacturer reimburses them. So ultimately it sounds like the same thing. Maybe the process is just different with the same end result.
What is the process for submitting your request/intent to have a motorcycle lemon lawed? Must a manufacturer be notified prior to the 30 days? Do I have to get a lawyer? My motorcycle has been in the shop coming up on a month with no ETA on when parts will even be available. I have missed out on some excellent riding weather as we are now starting to transition into hibernation. 😂 Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I’d rather NOT get a lawyer involved if possible.
