  • Today's question comes from Jack, a former high school Wrestler, who recently got into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
He's getting into BJJ but feels like he's having a lot of issues with the grips in the Gi. He was wondering if I had any particular Gi specific grip set ups for Wrestling Based takedowns.
This is a pretty common issue for former Wrestlers who transition into Gi Jiu-Jitsu, so it's a great question to answer.
In this video I show you my favorite "Wrestling Style" takedown and set up that I use in the Gi. It also works well in No-Gi.
Hopefully if you're a former Wrestler in BJJ, or anyone else looking to improve their takedowns in the Gi, then you found this video helpful.

Just learned that takedown last week and it's been my favorite ever since. It's super easy to pull and just by yanking the lapel the other guy is already out of balance, and you end up in mount or half guard depending on which side the guy ends up falling. I suck at take downs and this one comes easy.

Thanks! Would have loved to see you finish it a couple times. Since my gym doesn't teach takedowns at all I'm not sure what we do from there.

It’s a pretty standard wrestling move. By the way, Kolot is the man.

How do you get that ring on and off with the knuckles you have?

The Problem is Chewjitsu is that the other guy always grabs you gi then you can never get your knee down as your tied to him. This is the issue with trying to do single leg. The guy grabs your lapel which prevents you from getting down safely to take his leg.

You battle grips till you get the opening.
I’m showing what you need, yes, but it could take you half a roll just to get the 1 second opening where you have your grips and they don’t.

you in gi, why do wrestlers insist on grabbing the wrist instead of the sleeve when doing stand up, honestly if wrist control was better in gi stand up Judo players would do it, its totally allowed in Judo so if it was better thats what they would do... The lapel grip combo is good. guess this is fine if you a wrestler and wana shoe horn in shomething that can work in gi but its all very limiting

    Great technique thanks!
Can you do it without dropping to your knee?
