I just told a very dear friend tonite I would chant like this song over the hill walking along..nothing. else mattered but soul and cleansing through a long dark drifting march..not some walk in the PARK
Maggie Pringle ..The Album is called"The Black Veil":/ the Chieftians Featuring Mick Jagger,Sting,Ry Closer,Tom Jones and many others..A brilliant Album..Even if ur not Irish🍀.. And A Fan Of Irish Traditional Music,it's still a Great Album..And Mick excels..
I've never been a Jagger fan and this performance changed my mind. Powerful and honest. Had I written the song, this is the way I'd have heard it in my mind. Fantastic!
+mynewslacks Haha. I wonder where he's been all these years. Wild white horses, Angie, You can't always get what you want, Spider and the fly... Plenty of examples. The thing with Jagger is that he can sing when he wants to, and, er, "not-sing" when he doesn't want to.
Haunting, stunning, chilling, brilliant, beautiful. Ok, I admit I've got a penchant for "tragedy" songs, and this fits right in there. But I'm also a huge fan of Jagger's singing ... been so for years, and I absolutely LOVE this version of this song. The Chieftains are superb, of course, and the way Mick's singing works so well with them in this tune is yet further evidence of how incredibly versatile his voice is. Great match-up of musicians; great youtube post!
I’m personally really underwhelmed with Jagger’s take on this song, and I think the Chieftains’ lackluster noodling around in the background reflects Jagger’s lack of commitment to his performance. As for being the greatest frontman....well, that’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it. But I personally can think of 10 better than him. Professional musicians routinely rate Robert Plant at #1. Anyway, here’s the way a singer sings a song, which is different from screaming lyrics: ua-cam.com/video/krJNQEuPCHI/v-deo.html
Wow! I just went from thinking "yeah sure the stones are cool" , to "damn Mick can sing like I never knew". The Chieftains? Well, no question - always awesome. Jagger tore the roof off, I mean this is the first time in my life I heard someone do justice to a Johnny Cash classic.
CDA 129 There's alot of great versions done of this song. Each one a little different done in their own style. The Band, Dave Mathews, Jerry Garcia et al. all do a commendable job covering this fine tune.
This is a song that accompanied me all my youth long, but usually sung by Joan Baez; I didn't know this version which is awsome! Thanks for posting it.
Classic done by several legends with incredible versions but it has never been done better than this! Ole Mick Jagger blows all the modern counter singers away and he just happens to be the Greatest front man in Rock History.
An English singer with an Irish backup band singing a song written by an American country artist about the death if an Italian actor. What could be more perfect.
And done in the style of an Irish or Scottish lament. Up until the mid/late 60s, there was "Country" music, and there was "Western" music. Country came from primarily the southeastern US, which had been settled largely by people coming over from the British Isles. They brought their music with them, and the legacy is songs like this.
Wow. Just wow. I listened to The Kingston Trio version of this song for years and found this gem while looking for another Chieftains song for my husband. Beautiful.
This is the absolute best version of this song I've ever heard. It's so haunting and mournful. This is how this song should have been done in the first place.
I approached this rendition with some skepticism, but faith, Mick Jagger has produced the genuine article and you won’t find a better one in a long day’s walk. God bless the Chieftains and their collaborators!
My grans favorite by Lefty. I know in my heart there was a deeper reason because she would have tears in her eyes. I wished I'd asked...but I don't think she would have told.
Had this song b4 on USB under track 8 not cheaftains but this most similar loved it searched n searched cant find the one I had searching over 10 years now still no good powerfull story makes d hairs stand on back on my neck
i love this song long black veil by mick jagger i also love this song by mike nesmith listen to the way mike nesmith sing this song to love this song by both of them
The scaffold is high, and eternity nears She stood in the crowd and shed not a tear But sometimes at night when the cold wind mourns In a long black veil she cries over my bones
Being an American with deep irish catholic follow through, after seeing and talking to one of my one of 5 nun Grand aunts of 8 children thanks to my great grandfather. My Irish family appreciated the cheiftains quite often. Also why I love/hate "danny boy" my name is Daniel, so i only heard it at my birthday and funerals!!!👍lucky me!!👍
For a more whimsical Mick Jagger Country and Western tune his cover of "Bob Wills Is Still The King!" by Waylon Jennings while onstage in Dallas with The Stones is profoundly recommended.😂🎤🐴🎼🎵🎸🎹🥁🎻B.W.

The woman is mourning Ireland itself: it’s a beautiful euphemism for a tortured conflicted soul and loyalty. ‘In a long black veil, she cries all over my bones’
The arrangement of this song is hauntingly beautiful. Spectacular music! But let us be aware that this is not a song about loyalty to a friend, a friend's family, or oneself. It is disloyalty to the core. All of the "actors" in the song are affected by one man's actions. The best friend doesn't know why his friend was hung. The wife betrayed her husband by her unfaithfulness with another man. And a coward chose to die rather than acknowledge wrongdoing. Now a best friend's wife visits the grave of a man with whom she betrayed her best friend, her husband! Nevertheless, the song as arranged is a powerful reminder of how one should not die.
Wrong. The coward was the murder who did not step forward and say "I am the killer, and this man is innocent". The narrator is actually a hero, because he chose to die, rather than give his alibi, which would not only betray the woman he loves, but break his best friends heart as well. So,while it wasn't the smartest thing he could have done, since it resulted in his death, and the escape of a murderer, I can't see how it was disloyalty in any way.
If Mick moves to Canada, and opens a great distillery, he could make his stuff in Maplewood and ad a little maple syrup for fermentation for Mick's Sweet commercial like Not goin anywhere without Mick's Sweet, of course starting Jerry a Texas gal! If I was a lady.....I would buy it!
Really unique song for Mick to sing, he knocks it out of the park! Showcases his awesome voice!
Listen to Johnny Cash if you want to hear a better version. Jagger can’t sing to save his life.
His singing is an embarrassment
Rip to the chief chieftain Paddy. Thank you for the music 🙏👏👏
Probably the best collab, Mick Jagger has done!
"Long Black Veil" is the Citizen Kane of Country Music.
Nice analogy!
The best singing performance ever by Jagger!
Mick and the chieftains. Good ole song. Mick is impressive here.
She cries all over my bones. Chills to the bones every time
For me the best of Mick Jagger,a hidden side of his.
i find it so hard to listen to this song without getting chills.
That means they did their job.
@@almostfm right?!
Check out Sammi Smith's version.
My goodness, when he sings “the scaffold is high and eternity nears” you can feel the emotion and the fear of eternity and judgment.
I just told a very dear friend tonite I would chant like this song over the hill walking along..nothing. else mattered but soul and cleansing through a long dark drifting march..not some walk in the PARK
What a treasure to find. I've always loved this song, but to hear Mick do it? My god what a gift.

Mick did this more justice than I expected. Well done, and fair play to you!
This never fails to give me chills... that first wailing note of the tin whistle sounds like a lost soul. And the singing is wonderful!
I've never been a Jagger fan and this performance changed my mind. Powerful and honest. Had I written the song, this is the way I'd have heard it in my mind. Fantastic!
+Bill Cole I didn't realize he could actually sing till I bought this album.
+Bill Cole I don't know how you see a difference between songs like this and some of the Stones hits but whatever floats your boat.

Best version I've heard. Glad I came across this.
I remember the original as I was 9 years old at that time. This is a wonderful version, first time I've ever heard it!
The song is great ! Had the cd back then in 95 when I was 19 years old.
Kiki, I was 25, and loved that cd! Wanted it on vinyl so bad

Mick does a great job on this beautiful old song. One I used to sing as a lullaby for my kids, wondering now , was it suitable!
LOL I wondered about you until that last part. I love the song but for some it's a downer.
Must say I did the same thing. Also sang Philadelphia lawyer too.

I randomly stumbled across this; an unexpected collaboration I wasn't aware of but after listening, whole heartedly commend..
i'm a beginning guitar player and have taught myself this song!!!
Magical voice and perfomance of Mick ! Awesome song ! A delight for ears and heart ! And very beautiful video ! Many thanks !
Mick Jagger has talent beyond the pale.

Had I heard this song without reading the description or title, I'd have been hard pressed to name Mick as the singer... so well done, I'm in awe.
R.I.P Paddy Moloney
Listened to a few versions, even Lefty and Cash, but this one is the one I enjoy the best.
Me too Mick did it up right
This version is on my Island tape! Jagger makes it special.

I have to go with the Band's version. Almost every iteration has merit, though.

The song is also rumored to be about a woman who visits the grave of Rudolph Valentino according to a search I did on the I-net recently.
