I have a lilac bush that is over 50 years. Still blooms but only on top. I have been slowly trimming it back to get new growth lower. I had low flowers this year. I was so happy.
Was looking for videos to help a friend learn how to prune their lilac bush and found this old video of yours. While I agree with most of what you said I must say that if a lilac bush is cared for and pruned on a somewhat regular basis, cutting out dead branches and unwanted suckers etc, it can last for decades. The lilac bushes my grandmother planted are still thriving 80 years later.

I did the same to my lilac years ago and it was in same rotting type shape on inside, thankfully to this day (years later) it still looks the same! I just love the dleaned out and trimmed up look, yours looks great like that , hope it lasts as long as you want it to! Beautiful!!!!

We've got a huge old lilac that was planted when our house was new in 1958. It's sprawled out ALOT and the underneath has many dead branches. It still flowers but not too much and the blossoms are way up at the top, 10 feet or so. I think this plant would benefit from a good pruning. Helpful vlog, thank you!
thank you thank you thank you!!! I just moved into my new home and I have two out of control Lilacs that I want to prune back. I have now watched 8 videos on how to do this... and they ALL say to basically cut it all the way back and leave some straggly growth to regrow. It's such a beautiful plant! The thought of hacking it all up horrified me!! FINALLY I found yours and you are encouraging the shape and beauty while cleaning it up. Now I cant wait to put on some gloves, grab my pruners and go at it!! YOU ROCK! Did I say "thank you"?

I giggled every time you said a phrase like “crying out loud”, your so young and it’s funny hearing all the older phrases from back in the day. Love all your videos!
Thank you that's exactly the tutorial I was looking for, my lilacs at my new home are old and had been neglected for years. There are seven lilac "trees" to renovate, I now have a project for tomorrow!
Great job Laura. It turned out great again. Wow, that tree would scare me just waiting for them to come and cut it. I'm glad like you said that it didn't do more damage. Cain't wait to see it gone and what you do with the area. See you in the next one!
Glad you didn't hurt yourself too badly. The lilac looks great Laura. You have given it a fair chance for survival. I hope you get a few more years from it. 💕
How cool that you can wear long sleeves through such a strenuous process. It's still so hot and humid in the Midwest - I turn into a puddle after a 5-minute job. The results are amazing. Please take care of our favorite gardener's eyes!
Hi Laura! The Lilac looks so much better now! You have such a knack for making everything look better. I'm sorry it will eventually need to come out, but totally understand the need for it. I have a small Lilac that is so pretty when it blooms. I've never really trimmed it back, but will see if it needs it next year. I'm glad you're having the Elm tree removed. I saw it in IG. I'm glad no one was hurt. Hopefully it will be removed before it does any more damage! Also, please wear protective glasses to protect your beautiful eyes. You will still look beautiful! So funny and adorable how you find Benjamin's toys outside in the plants. My youngest boy is 22 and I still find Legos, helicopters and train cars some , of which, has been purposely buried. I miss my little boys even though I enjoy them as now as young adults. Loved those times when you get to enjoy all those "firsts" and be amazed at how smart they are as they grow into such interesting people.
Wow what a difference fabulous job Laura You are definitely one of the hardest workers so super talented thanks again for all the great videos and sharing with us all
Interesting video...I just spent many hours cleaning up a drift of 20 year old lilacs. I searched for videos and am pleased to view this one AFTER I did my own pruning. I did much as you did. I love all of your videos and they have really helped me with my gardens.

Thank you for this. My lilac ancient and squashed between my house and driveway. This gave me the confidence to prune it... and just in time too because it has started to bloom!
So glad you, Aaron, and Benjamin weren't near that tree when it fell! I'm glad you addressed when the optimal time for pruning was. I always heard to prune right after the blooms start to fade. Love the videos!
Oh how I wish Laura could grow crape myrtles, very similar pruning pattern and structure. Plus she’d have a tizzy with how versatile they are. But this lilac really did remind me of what I do know about crape Myrtle cleanup!
Such a differ nice. Just like the other. Changes the whole perspective. Weak and dying limbs scare me so bad. I knew a small child that had a tree limb fall on him. Now he is his moms garden angel. It’s just not worth it. Ever. Be safe and tfs! Wonderful video. Aaron is soooo good. 💕
My lilac is dying now. I put it in in the 80s and it has bloomed every year since. I will miss it, not only for the blooms but also because it is a sort of screen to the neighbors. Like you I need to get it out, I think it has lived it's full cycle. You just showed, why I haven't done anything, it is a dirty, messy job. But, somebodies got to do it. (Grin) Thanks for sharing.
@@sandy-rr1by I've not had success with that. There are, as Laura pointed out, a lot suckers growing around it. I've not found any of those that bloom though. Such a waste.
That's how lilac bushes are used in MN too, as an inexpensive privacy fence. The County Extension office sends the Farmers out lists of trees & shrubs for like $1.00 a piece, for anyone needing to plant a new shelter belt. That's how I acquired mine. My neighbors had lilacs all the way around their backyard as a privacy fence
Thanks for sharing this prune job. I think it can help people be less intimidated by their own overgrown messes - they can clear out the random suckers as a start, which will make a huge difference. Even when buying a home, if the garden was let go by the homeowners, start trimming and you just may have bought yourself a beautiful yard after all.
Amazing difference. I remember my grandmother pruning her large lilac like this. We had many in her yard growing up and they are and always will be my favorites!
That looks like a different lilac, what a transformation!! Good choice to take that large tree out. Glad you or someone else was not hurt, or the cats were not up that branch when it fell.
Glad you guys are all safe! That said, it's really cool to see how you work around issues. I really enjoy seeing your space transform for the better. Good job!
That lilac bush must feel like I do after an over due haircut! Lol And yikes! That tree! So thankful no one was injured with that falling limb, especially since you were out in the garden at the time. That tree has lived it's life cycle, relieved you are removing it. And on a crazy side note....I dreamt that you flew out to visit me and of course I was super excited to show you my garden and garden together, however you were 8 months pregnant and could hardly get around much less garden...I was a little disappointed. But we ate fried chicken and had a good visit. I woke up laughing! I did watch a garden answer video AND ate a chocolate chip cookie right before I went to bed. 😂
Dream interpretation is always about the dreamer, even when others make an appearance. Being pregnant in a dream is about creativity. You and Laura were gardening, that's pretty creative. The qualities you see in Laura are qualities you like about you.
I love the way the lilac looks now! When I didn’t like was saying you put your dirty finger in your eye to get the dirt out! (Introducing more bacteria)You have beautiful eyes it would be a shame to lose vision in one. I have a rare eye disease and have lost some of my vision I do everything I can to protect them now! I know the safety glasses are a hassle but well worth wearing. ☺️💐
Thank you for this video! I've always loved lilacs, but I am very new to shaping and pruning. This really helped me understand how a lilac should look. Thanks again!
Well, that was a job of work. But, how gratifying to have it done! What a beautiful structure you uncovered under all that dead mess. Glad none of you were in the path of that falling tree. Seems like this is the year for them all to go. ~ Lisa
The lilac looks a hundred times better, the structure was there just hidden underneath all of those crazy little branches. I have older lilacs along two of my fences, one fence the lilacs belong to the neighbors and they are pushing on my fence and I will be cutting them away, the other fence the lilac tree is smaller but has many stick like branches that just look dead and very unappealing, they will get a major prune as well. Please wear safety glasses, you need to protect your beautiful eyes, we only get one pair of those. So crazy about that big tree, so glad that no one was hurt and that your landscape plants survived. Russell is so adorable, you have the perfect kitty, he is so friendly and outgoing and photogenic. Thanks Laura and Aaron, have a great day, bye for now.
Thanks to you, I now appreciate the structure of things like these old lilacs. Before I would always over look things like this or even say it looks weird....but you have taught me to see the beauty in every garden and plant.
Huge transformation! I did giggle when you pulled out those rotten pieces that reminded me of a gnarly old tooth being pulled out and my eyes teared up with sympathy when you got that bolder out of your eye. Benjamin’s little treasures. 💙👍🏻💚✂️

So thankful you made this video. The results are incredible & made me realize what my lilac could look like. Off to do some pruning...
I love that you can see through it now. And I think this is a fun thing to do!
Getting things cleaned up is always worth it. Would love another garden tour and update on cottage garden! Thanks!
I had an old lilac I pruned last year and I pruned it all the way back and it completely rejuvenated it. 😊
Good job!
Oh goodness, truly your pruning shears are your best friend in your established garden, Gorgeous!
Hilarious 😂
That would be WONDERFUL if she was preg again--I'm sure Benjamin would love a playmate & she'd get extra helpers/learners in the gardens as she ages!
Great dream!
Christine Pops thanks for the laugh!
Dream interpretation is always about the dreamer, even when others make an appearance.
Being pregnant in a dream is about creativity. You and Laura were gardening, that's pretty creative. The qualities you see in Laura are qualities you like about you.
Always a great satisfaction when you get dead wood cleaned up, lots of work for sure 👍
Now this is satisfying to watch.
Thank you for this video! I've always loved lilacs, but I am very new to shaping and pruning. This really helped me understand how a lilac should look. Thanks again!
Love this pruning demo! Beautiful outcome and enhanced view now. Love you and your little quirks in this video. You're the best!
Well, that was a job of work. But, how gratifying to have it done! What a beautiful structure you uncovered under all that dead mess. Glad none of you were in the path of that falling tree. Seems like this is the year for them all to go. ~ Lisa
So thankful that damage from tree was minimal, what a blessing!
Great job, Laura. A nice refresh.
You go girl! That lilac looks great. Loved watching you tackle that beast. Sucks about losing more trees. Anxious to see what you replace them with.
Ooooh it would also look so good at night with lights twisted up the trunks!
I love feeling productive like that and being able to see hard work paid off
It looks great Laura 💕
Def made a big difference ..

I'm learning from your work
Thanks to you, I now appreciate the structure of things like these old lilacs. Before I would always over look things like this or even say it looks weird....but you have taught me to see the beauty in every garden and plant.
What an amazing transformation...job well done lady.
Huge transformation! I did giggle when you pulled out those rotten pieces that reminded me of a gnarly old tooth being pulled out and my eyes teared up with sympathy when you got that bolder out of your eye. Benjamin’s little treasures. 💙👍🏻💚✂️
I had to take out my beloved popcorn plant yesterday. After 6 years it upped and died. The last frost did damage and it struggling to come back. As much as I would have liked a another in that area I decided to put in 2 fire bushes. The bees, hummingbirds and butterflies should love them.
Great job! I had a whole row last year and it's made the biggest difference in our backyard!
I love your enthusiasm Laura! It brings life back to me when I feel down!
