    Was looking for videos to help a friend learn how to prune their lilac bush and found this old video of yours. While I agree with most of what you said I must say that if a lilac bush is cared for and pruned on a somewhat regular basis, cutting out dead branches and unwanted suckers etc, it can last for decades. The lilac bushes my grandmother planted are still thriving 80 years later.

    I been living in the small apartment for 6 years now. Last spring the lilac bush finally got some flowers. Yesterday I decided to trim it a bit because I saw lots of dead branches. I just learned last night from a video of yours to wait till after it blooms. But I only cut the dead parts and from the bottom.

I have to tell you I laughed out loud so many times, from your story about trying to get your phone out when the branches fell, to the trash in your eye, and “for crying out loud” about the tags showing on your furniture cushions! This was all so familiar to me, because I’m the same! 🤣🤣🤣 Thanks for making my morning and I hope ya’ll have a great day 🙌💚🍁🍂 (BTW, so thankful no significant injury occurred from those branches falling!🙏)

To me gardening was dig a hole, throw it in the ground and water but there’s so much more and so much more joy. Also, you teach me not to be afraid to move or prune things. Thank you so much for sharing your gardens with us.

    Traits of an awesome gardener, filthy clothes, dirty hands and ruined manicures! Both lilacs look awesome all pruned up! You are right! Plants have a lifecycle. In Virginia I am and I just had to remove two diseased old dogwood trees. I am so thankful that you and your family were safe from that tree that fell. It will be good to have the remaining removed for safety. Another great opportunity to create another beautiful area after removal!

    Every video has so many helpful tips, I just can't get enough of them. What amazes me most is how few insects you have to deal with in a cleanup project like this one. I live in Tennessee, so when I do projects like this, even in the fall, I have to cover every inch of skin. I wear gators and workbooks, and elbow length leather gloves just so I don't get spider bites and crawlies. This time of year my ground is covered in those giant ground dwelling spiders, and while I don't mind disturbing them, I do mind getting them on me. You are out there with no gloves, no eye protection, not even a pony tail or hat. Where are all your insects!!!? do you ever think about that?

    • @Bamboo4U2
      @Bamboo4U2 4 роки тому +1

      Very dry climates tend to have less pests. Where I am (in NJ) it's nowhere nearly as bad as Tennessee, but we have our fair share of nasty bugs when it's sickeningly humid. She (Laura) never has to deal with that which is why she gets away with planting things so closely together. Only occasionally will you hear her report something got powdery mildew.

    I'm glad you mentioned there is a life cycle. With older shrubs like this lilac there comes a time, like the tree, it's in severe decline.

    • @sherriianiro747

      Just an FYI - there is a historical lilac farm in the Northwest which I cannot exactly remember where I saw on Volunteer Garden & the lilacs are over 200 years old plus you can still purchase cuttings from the original trees to grow your own. A certified arborist here said trees do not have a life cycle ( i.e. redwoods, olive trees, historical sites, etc.) and through proper care & not intentionally disrupting their environment they will live hundreds of years.

    My wife and I bought an old farmhouse with a huge old lilac. about 15 ft. tall - the shortest stem. Barely bloomed the 1st year. Cut the whole thing back to about 4 inches tall right after it finished. Second year it had about the same number of blooms as the 1st year. But since then it has doubled or tripled the number of blooms, looks so much better and is easy to keep under control at about 7-8 foot. Just another way to rejuvenate lilacs.

    Another tree! Oh my! So glad none of you were hurt, and I’m so glad you have the means to take care of it right away, can’t wait to see how the area changes when you make the new plans!

    The final shots looking through the open lilac show your cone evergreens with the pretty plantings along the base. It looks like a sparkly necklace along the background. LOVE the new look!

    So glad you, Aaron, and Benjamin weren't near that tree when it fell! I'm glad you addressed when the optimal time for pruning was. I always heard to prune right after the blooms start to fade. Love the videos!

    I'm new to your channel and I'm thrilled I stumbled upon your garden, your advice, and your passion. I'm watching this 8 months after you posted it, but this is the right time for me to address the problems with my lilac bush. I worked on my other one last year and experienced exactly what you did-whole branches coming out of the center, etc. I was sure I didn't know what I was doing. Now I feel confident that if it needs to go, I will be fine. I have no idea how old either bush is; former owners planted them. Thanks for making this video. It really helped!
